At a press conference Tuesday morning, BC Premier John Horgan and Minister of Labour Harry Bains, announced that British Columbians will soon have access to three days of paid sick leave for COVID-19 related illness.
The legislation introducing paid sick leave was tabled on May 11, 2021, and through amendments to the Employment Standards Act will support workers that need to stay home while they are sick during the pandemic, and also includes permanent paid sick leave which will continue beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.
Those who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, are self-isolating in accordance with public health orders or are awaiting a COVID test result will be provided with three days of sick leave. Employers will be required to pay workers their full wages and the Province will then reimburse employers without an existing sick leave program for up to $200 per day, per employee.
