Water ownership was on the list for discussion when cabinet ministers met the Iwi Leaders Forum in Porirua last week, but no commitments were made. Dr Reti says it’s a tough problem, but the action has moved to the High Court, where Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Kahungunu are seeking a declaratory judgment on their rights. "I understand it's an impasse that's been there for a while now but I think there could be substantive guiding principles that come from whatever decision form the court proceeding is, and I think we should wait to see what that will reveal," he says.
