National Party deputy leader Shane Reti says the Government is right to hold off on making major decisions on water.
Water ownership was on the list for discussion when cabinet ministers met the Iwi Leaders Forum in Porirua last week, but no commitments were made.
Dr Reti says it’s a tough problem, but the action has moved to the High Court, where Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Kahungunu are seeking a declaratory judgment on their rights.
"I understand it's an impasse that's been there for a while now but I think there could be substantive guiding principles that come from whatever decision form the court proceeding is, and I think we should wait to see what that will reveal," he says.
