On larry king question listening learning you know ive always said i never learned anything when i was talking its important to listen to question more. A 15 Year Old Girl called grace in the suburban detroit area has been placed into juvenile detention for get this not completing her homework grace has 80 h. T. And other emotional and behavioral issues and a long history documented by several calls to the police by her own mother when their fights escalated so as part of graces probation by the courts she was ordered to basically be on her best behavior until coded hit and her school went to all online courses the young girl was abiding by the terms of her parole now since the pandemic all of the resources and help that grace had in school vanished and now her mom says she is languishing in a child prison her mom has started a go fund me page to help free grace so joining us on this discussion our panel today syndicated conservative radio talker in michigan steve gruber and cohost of boom bust and investigative journalist Ben Swan Steve i will start with you now on the surface this sounds like extremely harsh punishment for a kid that didnt do her homework it seems highly unusual can you speak more to how the courts handle what is basically online truancy in your home state is this normal. As a lot of the points of fact here that it should be important and so lets talk about those 1st this is a child has been in trouble the Police Numerous times involved the numerous altar occasions with her mother violent altercations the police been called to the home numerous times this is not just a truancy issue this issue of Online Schooling this is an issue of misbehavior that has been ongoing in a pattern for a very long time and the judge in the case very well and brennan decided back in may that gray. I needed to spend time in a facility where she could more be more focused on her getting her schoolwork done getting her life on track and getting back to living a more accountable life if you will so a great stop doing her homework the judge decides you to stay in the program and by the way in the program her caseworker says its a 5 step program each takes about a month so shes doing great there the judge is doing the right thing and that grace will benefit greatly by continuing through this program this is not a harsh punishment and shes trying to help a young person in trouble not end up in prison in a few years this is trying to help a young person trouble find their way and yes sometimes when you make bad choices guess what there are consequences in this case not doing your homework when youre on probation for violently attacking your mother well that will get you in more trouble well bad. Judge brennan is accused of being too harsh on the girl obviously critics like like the girls mom and a lot of supporters but some might say she was extra hard on her because grace is black and as we know statistically frequently black and brown people defendants face harsher punishments than their white counterparts do you think race is race played a role here. Yeah im not sure that thats the case i dont think it necessarily is a race issue but i would heres where i think theres a overstepping here by the judge is certainly in the fact that look theres no question if you look at the facts of the case certainly this young woman has shes a troubled young woman she has violent outbursts as was previously stated she does fight with her mother she was on probation so those things are all real there are real domestic issues and family issues here however the fact that a judge would say but you back essentially behind bars because you werent doing the homework and i think that that becomes a slippery slope or it could become a slippery slope because if that is the case then you reach a whole new level of say what is it a crime for a child to not do their Online School when theyre not going to school and because lets face it while this coronavirus pandemic is taking place and while so many students are at home there are a lot of students who are not getting worked up or theyre slacking on their work now that i understand these are 2 different issues but one can and certainly might bleed into the other as time goes on because who knows how long were going to remain in this situation works from home and guys this next question is going to go to both of you i mean this girl is she i dont mean to diminish what she did with her mother and we it has been documented we know that that she has these outbursts and now her mom whether its out of guilt or what have you shes a mama she wants her kids home obviously this little girl didnt rob a store steal a car or anything like that she has documented disability and from what i can tell exhibits the usual traits of a lot of teenagers you know angsty angry falling asleep in class not doing homework and you know what point is that the role of the state to get involved with how a child behaves or how a parent handles them steve. Well after multiple calls to the police and refusing to follow the rules over and over again grace is found out that shes going to be held accountable its appropriate. Heres the point the judge said she is a danger to the community because the police keep being called her home her mother felt the same way her mother said that there were frequent violent outbursts from grace and not doing your homework which we keep coming back to. Being passed off as nothing serious its a pat
