Salute to Iowa Nurses: Sustaining the joy in service to others

As we honor our health care heroes during this year’s Nurses Week, I am filled with gratitude for their tremendous commitment and courage.
I’m reflecting on the nearly four decades that have passed since adding “nurse” to my life roles. My journey has taken me down many paths, from the intensity of critical care units as a staff nurse and educator to now serving as the chief nurse executive for UnityPoint Health System. But nothing has taken as much faith, hope and love as the pandemic of 2020.
Never has it been more evident that nursing is a calling. Individuals enter the career and remain in the profession out of a deep sense of purpose. They bring a desire to lighten another’s load, decrease suffering and restore health. A great nurse brings a keen intellect, technical know-how and an abundance of empathy. All of this was desperately needed as we faced the uncertainty and unknowns of the COVID pandemic. Our communities witnessed nurses demonstrating tremendous courage as they went to battle with an invisible, but deadly enemy. Their desire and commitment to serve surpassed their fears. I have never been prouder of our profession.
