Summer is fast approaching, but the Sandwich Recreation Department is struggling to fill job openings, including a medical position that is required to run the department's popular camp program. Director Guy Boucher said the department is slated to staff lifeguard towers and beach parking lot gates on Friday, June 25. He said a handful of lifeguards are returning from last year, but between six and eight more people are needed. Not having more lifeguards could mean that one of the town's three ponds will not be guarded, he said. Attracting lifeguards has been difficult in many towns for the past few years, Mr. Boucher said. However, the pandemic has meant that lifeguard certification programs have been on hold, hampering the certification and recertification of lifeguards and making the hiring situation even worse
