If John Rustad has his way, School District 57 could see a “trades school” created in the near future. Rustad, a first-term trustee on the school board, passed a motion at Tuesday’s board meeting to establish a steering committee to look into the idea. The reason he did so was because the Kindergarten to Grade 12 education system is, he believes, “geared almost 100 per cent toward an academic career, and only about 25 per cent of our students actually take this path. So more needs to be done to provide opportunities for other students.” The current education system values academics above all else, he says. What course offerings there are in trades and technical training are not geared toward the needs of the workplace.
