View Comments Sequoia National Forest crews have broken ground on a new Porterville headquarters more than 60 years in the making. First planned in the 1950s, the forest service started construction on the $7.5 million project in February. Rangers expect to welcome guests and staff at the new center in 2022. The 11,000-square-foot facility will be located on Henrahan Street, the historic site of the Forest Service Work Center, which was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps under President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. In the 1940s, the headquarters was moved to other buildings throughout Porterville that the forest service had leased. Plans to relocate back to the original property in the 1950s never came to fruition, officials said.
