Portland answering service Ruby Receptionists has agreed to give customers $8 million in credits and pay up to $4 million in attorney fees to resolve allegations that it overcharged 18,000 clients.
A class-action suit filed in U.S. District Court in Portland alleged that Ruby hadn’t properly disclosed how it bills clients for time operators spend on the phone with clients, and accused Ruby of charging clients for time callers were actually on hold.
A tentative settlement approved by the court last week calls on Ruby to give clients vouchers for $8 million in service and pay their attorneys up to $4 million. The settlement applies to Ruby clients from October 2011 through May 2018.
