A Shawnee County Jail officer is on leave as the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office investigates a May 16 use-of-force incident involving an inmate. Jeremiah Ray Spencer, 42, received emergency care and treatment for facial injuries he suffered during that incident, said Maj. Tim Phelps, of the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. Authorities weren't making public the name of the officer. He was placed on paid leave, which is the corrections department's standard practice in such situations, Phelps said. The incident occurred after Spencer was booked into the jail about 4 p.m. May 16 in connection with driving under the influence, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, driving left of center, possessing drug paraphernalia, interference with a law enforcement officer and disobeying a lawful police order, Phelps said.
