The Department of Social Development in Gauteng has shut down the Stepping Stone daycare centre in Alexandra, Johannesburg, following an incident that left a toddler severely burnt earlier this year.

It’s understood the boy sustained the injuries when a teacher at the creche allegedly used boiling water to clean him after he soiled himself. 
Following site visits by the department, the day care was found to be operating illegally.  
“In terms of Section 80(1)(a) any person or organisation may establish or operate a partial care facility provided that the facility is registered with the Provincial Government where the facility is situated,” said the department’s spokesperson Feziwe Ndwayana.
