SRO devotes Wednesdays to delivering meals to kids

Child hunger has grown nationwide since the beginning of the pandemic, and when kids aren’t in school, some are left without food at home. That’s one issue Franklin Supervisory Union Schools is trying to address. And they’re not doing it alone. Every Wednesday they have a group of people who help out, their School Resource Officer Jim Lynch being one of them. Officer Lynch saying, it’s one of the most important parts of his job. “It’s in a lot of ways a gift that these people know who you are and trust you enough to seek you out.” He heads out at about 7 a.m. every Wednesday, bringing meals to kids who are learning from home. He says though, that the families he makes deliveries to aren’t the only ones receiving. It’s more about building relationships with people, with staff, with members of the community. I think that gets you a lot further than most would imagine. After his morning route, he will hop on a bus, and do it all again until every meal has been delivered. “This is an undertaking that is worthwhile and we’re doing it and we haven’t stopped and we're going to continue doing it until we're out of this thing however long it takes.” Child food insecurity is more prevalent now in times of the pandemic. Food Service director for the Franklin Northeast Supervisory Union, saying universal school meals would be crucial to eliminating the stigma around food insecurity. “We tried not to take and separate them out and tried not to have a division line there, but, there’s always some way that a student can take something and twist it around and make it more than what it is. So I think it would make it all equal for all students,” said Director Dawn Reed. The boxes distributed for Franklin County Vermont schools are offered to anyone in the community who calls their local school and requests them. A full, and free, breakfast and lunch are provided in the boxes for children every single weekday they plan to attend school virtually from home during the pandemic.
