State Apology Due Today After Mother And Baby Home Report
By Hannah Murphy
It's after the publication of the long-awaited Commission of Investigation report which found an "appalling" level of infant mortality among the kids born there.
There were 9,000 children who died in the 18 institutions examined between the 1920s and 1990s - around 15% of those born.
56,000 unmarried mothers - ranging from 12-year-olds to women in their 40s - passed through the homes between 1922 and 1998.
The Commission's found their cruel treatment and stigmatisation was supported and condoned by church and state.
You can read the report here.
Archbishop Eamon Martin says he apologizes unreservedly and accepts that the Church was part of a culture in which people were frequently stigmatized, judged and rejected.
