Under the ordinance, first-time violators will receive a warning and information about the ban. Fines starting at $100 and going up to $500 will be imposed for those found to be repeat offenders. Summit police or the city's Department of Community Services will enforce the ban. The mayor can temporarily suspend the ban to clean up debris in the event of a hurricane, tropical storm or other emergency. At the council's April 20 meeting there will be a vote on a proposed amendment to the newly amended noise ordinance creating a hardship exemption application for residents and business owners. Under the city's existing noise ordinance powered equipment used for yard work can't start before 8 a.m. and must end between 6 and 8 p.m. depending on the day of the week and whether it's commercial, public or golf course property.
