Suspect charged with shooting Kings Mountain cop A man accused of shooting a Kings Mountain Police officer was released from the hospital over the weekend, but his freedom was short-lived. Antonio Cortez Anthony was immediately booked into jail and charged with first-degree attempted murder, assault on a police officer with a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is being held in Gaston County Jail without bond. The 30-year-old Hickory man is accused of shooting Cpl. Lee Whittington, a 13-year veteran of the Kings Mountain Police Department. He reportedly came in contact with Anthony in the neighborhood near the country club, and gunfire was exchanged.
