257 PEOPLE all over India are naturally anxious to know if any good will come out of the long interviews which Lord Reading is reported to have granted to non-co-operation leaders and other prominent men in the country. Mr. Gandhi is reported to have had long talks with His Excellency on three different occasions and Lala Lajpat Rai and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya have also discussed the present situation with the Viceroy. At a speech at Simla, Mr. Gandhi himself declared that he “could not say either one way or the other about the success of this interview.” He added that it might both be called as successful and unsuccessful. It is obvious that he has gained some of his objects by his discussion with His Excellency and has failed in others. He, however, assured his countrymen that as long as they stood by non-violence and the spirit of sacrifice for the cause of justice to their country, no power on earth could check them from the attainment of Swarajya within this year. Thus, he has once again reiterated his belief that Swaraj would be gained in a year’s time, which is also nearing its end and which has heightened the expectations of some and the curiosity of others. On the speculative danger of a supposed Afghan invasion, he declared that as long as he lived he could not tolerate any part of his country under foreign domination. It is inferable from this that Mr. Gandhi enjoins on his countrymen once more that Swaraj is attainable very soon by pursuing non-co-operation and maintaining strict non-violence and a spirit of sacrifice for the country. He, therefore, disowns those who resort to violence and incitement to crime as well as those who would tolerate or perhaps welcome Afghan invasion of India for certain purposes.
