The derby, which returned to Timaru’s streets in 2017 after a 40-year hiatus, typically raised about $5000 for charity each year. Hardache said an influx of junior racers, introducing a class pairing schools with businesses, and generosity from spectators helped propel the amount raised to $9300. “Entries were down a bit, but the number was pretty similar. The juniors and the new class made up for the drop in the open section.” There were 18 racers in the junior class, 10 in the Todd Mudie (schools with businesses), 13 in the corporate, and four in the open. “We had six new entries on the day of the event,” Hardache said.
