The minority Liberals are under pressure to meet a fourth deadline to update Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) legislation, while Conservatives continue to oppose the proposed regime.
A Quebec Superior Court Justice on Thursday agreed to give the federal government one more month to pass its MAiD legislation, C-7, pushing the deadline to March 26.
The Bloc Québécois has said it will support C-7, meaning the government has the votes to push it through.
But until debate in the House of Commons concludes, the bill won’t come to a vote, and the Conservatives — who didn’t support MAiD, even before a recent expansion to include people with a mental illness — haven’t allowed that to happen.
