That means going into Thursday with the next friend of the middle of some slice or 12 so far when I was strange weeks this week where all the day seem all over the place and to be honest I've no idea what days is. I'm losing the plot slowly that we're probably right I'll be OK . A Minute Love Songs and going into Thursday after 12 before that some songs by got some playing or some Ed Sheeran coming up in a few moments time as well in a moment the Middletons couple who only know the name age and find number of the strange use they didn't sleep in their spare room chatting then to Tim Michel the other side of the latest song called Still. Coming to the East Room for the east to. The hour. Let's. Says I want. His caucus we. Always gets. That she. Was such. A want to talk to. Graham Charenton if a stranger was sleeping in us. Bare room how would you feel just think about that for a 2nd. You only know their name date of birth and their mobile number my after 11 guests tonight are to Michelle and for the last 2 years they've let strangers stay in their spare room for up to 3 months at a time but the thing is these strangers have nowhere else to go most are frightened and desperately need a safe place to sleep what Tim and Michelle are doing could very well be saving lives and they're both join me on the program right now to the 2 of you to Michelle thank you very much indeed for joining in the program tonight and giving you so I like to get a little bit of background on my after 11 guests 1st so Tim you Michelle went to school together in Cyprus how come. Shows for that was in the early. Fall there was a church to the radio station over the forces B.S. B.S. . Case that's what brought you together year yes would you say you both had a good upbringing. I think we would not be with our bringing the children I mean we had the opportunity to travel the world and see a lot and I. Had just ended up going to school in Cyprus. The weather was argue like like good when you have to go to school to lunch time and then the afternoons were free play of the beat chicks but we were lucky and that was you say sounds like a perfect upbringing as far as I'm concerned So when did you both each come back to Britain there would be actually came back on the same flight. I then went 36 got mode before leaving. Rutland. They even went to a place called Wait boards just outside. So really what we're saying is you know you last night in some cases we did I wrote to me a couple of times to the address that I had. Forwarded to her so we actually lost touch in $97.00 OK you want us to go back in contacts How did that will come about and we'd look at each other. What was called. Which was the precursor to Facebook so we sort of followed each other's profile and just kept in touch with questions to each other but who was the contact for us then to she finally get back together we shall to the 1st. Ready reason is that with. The French requests and also what it was a big She didn't ready. So she always. Schooldays in Cyprus what had happened in your life in the meantime when when you annoying contact. Ready join the Metropolitan Police in knowledge in Sept. And I worked with them for 20 years I became a customs officer after leaving the place and I was looking counterfeit goods and drugs. And then we showed her I got back in touch only moved up to Birmingham in 2013 where I still work in the lower 48 environment and what about you Michelle in those years that you were not together tell me what your life was like and what you've been getting up to the went to college her a couple of years in left. And then I went to test a field of delegates or just randomly stuck a pin in a black and went there for just over 3 years to train as a nurse Ironically I went back to Cyprus for a couple of years. So they are settling in the middle and I continue my nursing career now even though among the commune. Living I'm working establishing believe Yes Yes So you're backing contacts where did you 1st meet face to face again there and that must have been a heck of a meeting Michelle invited me up for a cup of coffee so I drove 110 miles for a cup of coffee. In 2007. Proposed to Michelle 6. Where. Did you always think that that was a possibility that you were going to be together it was almost like destiny I think if I look back probably So you obviously missed each other during those years when you were not together I think we were certainly I've certainly would keep an eye on what was going on with the with interest what it was the an address there was a little spark always there or you saw an ad for all night stuff in the local news server so just explain to me was night stop night started part of your. Park by the Y.M.C.A. And offered accommodation for homeless people aged between 16 and 25. The various reasons find themselves without accommodation and all part of that stop being so we just talked for everyone for the day whether it's what I heard it's more of a. That they made. And women Shell said yeah that's what we were initial thoughts what were you thinking when I was a little apprehensive to begin with but once we'd been on the training provided by the Y.M.C.A. It was something themselves that we could offer. Was we offer not stop there are other hosts as we are called the office supported lodgings so we do the very 1st of hoping to services the young people and so I see some of you both want to do it he says you know this is jointing obviously is not a thing that we feel quite privileged with our lives you know we're lucky we have a home a nice. You know part of families around and I think we would like to give a big to come. About because a good way of giving something back to people that were unfortunate. Position and. The Y.M.C.A. Been excellent in their support. For the young people so we felt it was a school that we would wish to be involved with and of course this was something you both had to agree on because you both live in the same house. Some The both readily jumped into and said Yeah absolutely. Oh the training. Really would try to get what we'd like. We did but it worked well but what 3 Yeah listen I mean. Afterwards I watched talk about how much top posting works and so more about that in a few moments time Harrington. Time ago. I can still. Have. Used to make me. And 9 knew. That I could make. Me. Happy. But. Living. On the doorstep. I can remember. When. Something. So. In. The shed he. Was. In bowls with drinking whiskey and saying and this is Be the day that I. Saw him so want to talk tonight it's like turning from talking to you to Michelle who for the last 2 years have been opening up their home to people who are homeless So how does NOT stop work just told me through the whole process if you can when I say they're going to check this message from the Y.M.C.A. Also who are available to host the young. So will be given the night. Sometimes a number if they've got one. Really sometimes the right for the social worker but often they arrive on the right which is probably a very stormy and watching proposition. Especially arriving at a stranger's horse just told me through the souls of people the would be arriving there while they arriving there could be very in 3. Often it will be some sort of family breakdown that happened that day. Maybe they've been in a relationship with a partner. It's a never ending list of reasons really and sometimes we actually don't know why the . TRAMP without any accommodation but the majority of the time it does appear to be some sort of family breakdown where they've had to leave the accommodation that they have other new rules for staying with us. They join in with the family I mean this social roles are my role if you're a paid the 1st degree of the table I think and everybody discusses the others that respect both sides expect to keep their room reasonably tidy we do have a negotiate a time. Because Tim and I both work they do have to get up in the morning and leave the property when we go to work but other joining it with standard family will help with the washing up in the sixty's Well as you say before they arrive in fact when they arrive you know very little about them 9 days of birth maybe a mobile number most people it's a very uncomfortable having a stranger someone you know nothing about very little about sleeping in the next room so we're not really spent as lives where Ethan is obviously so you go off to work and you're leaving them in your home. Or they may have to leave when we leave when the last one leaves. And then come back when 1st one arrives but but we're gods. A stranger sleeping in of the room and still. Not where it's all so long as they feel safe within. We make them feel at home. Then I would anticipate any problems or join with them you have to remember some of them have had some sort of traumatic experiences with lawyers and only We're trying to do is assist them on to the next step in last year and hopefully we can make a difference. Not only giving someone a warm safe place leaping but much more. Still post as well as. Well what we try and do is we offer advice and guidance when it's. Ready to operate we offer advice on money coping but most of them can't offer to go to mil. So they become part of the family so for example if we go out for the day then they will come with us one young lad we had to take to stay with us we took him up to the Christians. Which was 3 days of cars and lived by have the best part was his friend was actually playing when he was there and he'd never been to a concert he just watched in over as they played in front of him. And then another young lad not celebrating his birthday for a number of his. Cronies when he was given cause 1st of all that. We took him to a restaurant that night he'd never been to a restaurant he didn't know what to make it was all I had to order for one. It's things like that that my car job worthwhile it really does how does that make you feel when you are witnessing that firsthand I mean this is real stuff isn't it it makes me feel proud that we're showing them another aspect of law is. The fact that they will open up to us you know just so delivering to a restaurant and he was absolutely amazed by the men who want to order how do I order it what's taking photographs of it so those are not really for him to keep correctly but it's a memory that will take forever. You mentioned talking about stuff that never experience before but most talk to you about how they be came home yesterday and they talked about their backgrounds some do and some of them will have people there for a while and they never quite tell us what happened or why they're with it and that's really our only thing because it's a question it's part of the Y.M.C.A. Project they are offered a support worker in counseling and things that might be necessary so I think maybe they spent a lot of their lives being questioned in Queens so we're just quite happy really to offer them Lots of a paying support and just make them feel part of our family for a while. If they do this obviously it's confidential and we will try and help supporters and help and support this much as we can but it's not really something that we explore all the details you must see a change in them in the time that they have along with their 44 I'm sure they're feeling very nervous when they arrive and maybe have a shower or bath when they get there and have a nice warm bed and see them change over than the nights that they're. I think it prevented really good to have some I say from sleep each night because quite a lot of the young people that come into it's a been safest thing for quite a while and I think that security of just having somewhere where they. Can get a lot use a clean. Safe night's sleep yes we have quite a lot of people who seem to block them and then they get most of them already have a great life but I think hopefully we can hope that they can reach those aspirations we listen to see that if we can do well in a couple years you've been doing it how many people stayed with you from one stop we actually were to that today we've had 20 different people that have stayed. And obviously all sorts of different people is is there anyone in particular without naming names that you claim to attach to all follow their story I think you get attached to the whole. You know we've had the very 1st person that's the time was a young girl. And she was absolutely fantastic with the child couldn't have been all those 3 or 4 weeks old. We then had a young lady the same position which had all the pressure and actually had the child or she was with us a little in the house was a hospital but then we had all those we keep in touch with them because you don't feel part of their life and light in particular said he had the want to so when he got his G.C.S. And. She felt quite proud of the phone she is to tell you what the result of our. Love is that you've been opening up your home to those in need for a couple of years what does he bring to your lives to Michelle. I guess it sounds a bit corny but it sounds like Ritchie life especially when you see a young person arriving. And what they do hopefully blossom one young man had to say was with us probably about 3 months I think we come from the Caribbean. It's a great way her children it was authored very good food we went off to the Caribbean shop and brought Greek. You know he cooked us a lovely radio and hopefully if you think about cooking and. Trying to eat we had word stared at her they were. Words in return so obviously enrich your lives as well so what do you need to become a host a spare room patience. And a bit of love to give. We're going to put the details of the links on my Facebook page here on Late Night Graeme Torrington but insurance if anybody wants to get involved how can they do that well they can do it a couple of ways one is to contact the Y.M.C.A. Direct and also some give. All the way to the convoy M.C.A. Open door Facebook page. So much when shops are at the year they were Asian by the way to be aware of the hopelessness in the area so any of those well find out all about the hosting well as those details are on my Facebook page from my listeners if they didn't get the last details that gets to my Facebook page which is line of grandparents and and the links are on there Michelle and Tim It's fabulous with the.
