Somebody's the ultimate gift which is the gift of life but that doesn't come without its consequences and you will understand what I'm saying as we discuss it this afternoon with our guest Liam Barnet who is a 12 time world record holder unless you've let you bring in the others in the gap between the last e-mail I received possible military No no I don't think so. Represented Team g.b. Yeah that's right assuming and as I mentioned this is with somebody else's liver Yes my donor's liver tell us your story so you're a local chap live and work here in Cambridge sharing Cambridge take us back to well when we were 20112011 I had. My liver transplant so when I was for teen I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease which affected my liver So essentially my main system was attacking my liver and just a liver was just my liver Yeah and and over the years I was very stable I mean I was very lucky I managed to get my degree in civil engineering and. But when I didn't stop sorry to interrupt they didn't stop me doing anything as a as a child as a teenager I was very lucky I lead a very normal life I was able to swim play water polo again do my studies. I didn't drink on the advice of doctors and that's a whole at all you know even at parties where you have an Iraq where you can yeah. Even at parties. And then when I was one year here in Cambridge and in my in my new job. 22 you know I was 22 my liver started to fail so you got these infections. And I had to be hospitalized I think 3 occasions between sort of March 20th Levon and the 1st time in June 20 Levon when my my liver was you know I went jaundice I was like a Simpsons character was completely yellow. And one looked quite a bit but yeah I I I ended up in hospital for about a month just to try and. Combat infection and I had and to have assessment to put me on the waiting list for a liver transplant Wow Ok And when it started happening presumably you know you and you and your parents I'm guessing as well so we're looking out for signs that maybe something's wrong with the liver because that's been your life was it was obvious that something was going wrong I think we were probably all fairly complacent actually because I'd been so stable for so long and I did everything just like just you know like a normal person really. It came as a bit of a shock actually when my liver started to fail like it did quite dramatically in in a period of a few months and then obviously it was quite apparent again because of the jaundice on on that last time I was just so yellow it was it was fairly obvious that something was quite wrong and so you're in the hospital from month during that time here and work Hospital here in Cambridge. I was in hospital on i.v. Antibiotics and going through transplant assessment as well so. One of things as mentioned to you just before is actually you need to be fit enough to have a transplant it's a it's a bit of a paradox really but you actually like I said I felt almost a little bit like Ford really because I was sick and I was I was very. Able to do my normal day to day things but I wasn't bed bound like I thought I would be if I needed the transplant but in actual fact you need to have some degree of strength and health to be able to actually survive the operation was a major operation Yes Yeah so did you think actually I feel all right I was just a nasty infection. Maybe it was a one off. There was part of me that 4 actually maybe or a cover. In the 2 previous infections I had the 1st 2 of that year but the 1st one when when I went jaundice I 4 I don't think this is getting better by itself and how could I mean we were at death's door at any point I mean because a month is a long time your for your liver is failing I think I was quite naive at the time what was going on but I think I was pretty close Yeah Ok so they get you they get you better and then what happens. And then you go on the waiting list so I actually signed the documentation to go into the waiting list then the doctors and then hearses in the transplant co-ordinators they give you lots and lots of information . About the procedure about how long you might have to wait and they said you know might be any time from a few days to a couple of months. But in actual fact the day I signed to go on the waiting list I've been now just a visit sort of like home and stuff to earn a day or came back that evening in this sort of the nurse followed me back as I force was going to tell me off because I was getting back into sort from a hospital bed a little bit later than planned and she said we've found an organ for you you need to get ready so you need to come watch yourself going to take bloods and all sorts of crazy my heart was beating out of its chest my mum would just drop me off and she was on our way back to our home town Hemel Hempstead and so. Yeah I felt sort of I just felt very very anxious at that point and from that point on in actual fact at that time I was stood down after after an hour or so because the organ was found to not be suitable which is actually you know quite often the case that happens you get activated ready to to receive an organ in these situations but. Then you get sort of deactivated because organs are deemed unsuitable but it may have been suitable for what for somebody else they go to the next person on the list personally or it's just not vice a Billy might have been sort of like blood type or even the size of the organise well to fit into the space that the old one leaves behind or actually you know there's some something not quite right with the organ or it's not it may cause the patient is transplanted to to tell a few issues or something so they're lonely have a transplant something that they know is is you know there's no risk of anything developing afterwards. So what goes through your mind at that point where you think my goodness how lucky am I you know they found organ so quickly I'm not waiting around for months and then it doesn't happen what goes through your mind at that point. It's it's a it's a real mix of emotions. The motions the emotions that you can imagine really because you sort of there's a buzz about the place the nurses are sort of like why are you going for transplant this is amazing in you're very excited also very scared because it is a major operation that you know there is a possibility of not waking up from after but also sad because you realize actually someone has just passed away someone has just died and and they are on the organ donor register and they have opted to have the courage to tonight their organs and so so many emotions. And somebody has to die and today do you need a hole if it is an incredible organ peak and you can have a can have a part liver transplant is that you can get that was that not option for you the doctors did explore it but I think in the end they decided it was best to have a hole over there obviously this is liver transplant we're talking about you can receive a live donation for for kidneys. But other organs such as liver. Quite often you need to have a deceased donor. With the exception of the of the half liver donation Yeah and so how do you wait before you had a transplant. So like I said I was activated on the day I signed the waiting list. I was stood down and then I was actually on the waiting list only for a week because I was quite unwell Wow Ok And it was a matter of getting you a liver or yeah you're going to die yeah. What does it feel like to know there's a part of somebody else in your body. I get asked that question quite a bear and I guess I don't really think about it too much. When it comes up to my anniversary which is which is in July. As a time when I sort of stop reflect mainly to reflect on the down my donor's family about the feelings that they're going for now and hoping I guess that. You know using and living life in a way that they're on their loved one my donor would appreciate. But I have to say sort of day to day it's not it's not like I'm not feeling like all those like someone else. You know someone else's bar and side makes excuse that sort of terminology but. Yeah it's something you sort of just become you just adapt and sort of get used to and you know anything about them or you told or is that against sort of data protection and so. I wrote to my donor's family one year after receiving the transplant because I knew that would have significance to them I guess a year after their loved one had passed away I also wrote to them in that time because I was actually quite unwell still after the transplant for some period of time and it wasn't until a year afterwards that I felt you know actually I'm back in work now my life has really turned around and so I wrote to them one year afterwards and I in my case I didn't hear anything back from them which is fine it's that's that's the way it went and that's fine with me I know many other people have had transplants and sometimes they write to their donors and they exchange a dialogue and they even get to me at times as well Liam incredible story stay with us in the story and he begins there as well here about his involvement in the Transplant Games being a 12 time world record holder representing Team g.b. After we had a look at the weather forecast and also speak to a nurse from the n h s blood and transplant service but a look at the forecast for Cambridge here this afternoon well some sunshine but also scattered showers gradually spreading from the west which may be quite heavy at times and they chilly fresh south westerly breeze highs of 7 Celsius that's $45.00 Fahrenheit then cloudy with heavy potentially locally thundery showers at 1st this evening which will clear off towards alien little port in the east of Cambridge chip there after a cold clear night with temperatures dipping below freezing so a bright chilly start to tomorrow but then through the more. Once again from the southwest with heavy rain moving in through the afternoon highs of 7 Celsius 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Here on lunchtime on b.b.c. . Radio Cambridge airplane your requests your dedications your shouts out birthday celebrations your anniversary is whatever's happening in your life with those nearest and dearest to let us know and tell us what songs we can play for you by free phoning 080859596 or texting 81 travel 3 Start your message See am is we're joined in the studio by Liam bonnet he is a 12 time well record holder broke another one in that song Ok few representing Team g.b. At the Transplant Games and his Tell us about the 61 people who are on the Christmas transplant waiting list and that is just in Cambridge share there's lots more of the rest of the country and many of those children as well let's have a chat with Linda knights and who's a specialist nes n.h.s. Blood and transplant very good afternoon to you Linda hello and thank you so much for joining us so there is there is change afoot isn't there there is legislation which is going to come into effect next year which will which will change the system yes you talk about the opt out scheme which will come into place in 2000 bring 2020 and what we want to do really is to encourage a discussion around organ donation to make people think about donation and think about it you know. Whether that is something that they would want for themselves of their loved ones and to spend 2 minutes signed up to the Organ Donor Register. Come spring 2000. People. Will have will opt out of adult movie not out system as opposed to an opt in system now said people who. Want to opt out then they could register that but the key point really is to is to talk about the nation with your families and make sure that your family's aware are you of your wishes so that if that time does come then you know they know what it wishes are and they can support that wish it's not something that anybody really wants to contemplate is it or think about the tennis how that process works in the event of a tragedy Well how does that process work. Well it's a very complicated process organ donation. And you know my role as an open donation spaciousness we were just we would get a referral from specialist units and then we would. Do it in the solution Cessna and. And and to speak to the family and those conversations take place at a really difficult time for families and they're never easy and I would say that going back to my original point if your family know what your wishes are all when organ donation is raised as a possibility then you know if you know what you know what your loved ones we should follow you can support that process even though someone has signed up the organ donor register we would still approach families. To consent and to gain support and then and then obviously after that it's very very long. Very long close as this or that she that is a complex process that we to that we undertake to make sure that the donation can safely and was was an outcome that. We see that they don't miss wishes and does it in any way offer comfort to the to the families we do find that we do find that and from my day to day experience I you know you can't take away the grief that people are going through you haven't changed what happens you know you're powerless in that from that point of view but what you can offer is in that darkest hour from the light and people do you know it may not be an immediate effect but people do find that actually there's some comfort they can take some pride in knowing that their loved one has saved their very lives are more in their own of the patient's right mind live you know it's an amazing gift and that's why do I do because I just see the enormous in the nation and he shifted it to people even Linda Knight And thanks very much for joining us thank you. Here on b.b.c. Radio signed the organ donor donor register organ donation dot n.h.s. Dot ukase the websites or the phone number 301232323 as in the touched upon I mean it's desperately sad circumstances that somebody would be donating an organ but the outcomes maybe would offer comfort to the family and office somebody a new lease of life which is what it did to Liam bonnet from Cambridge I guess to soften he received a live back in 2011 and then your life changed dramatically Les I'm sad to become part team g.b. Of the Transplant Games. Yes it did have to change the the whole Transplant Games it's a wonderful thing it's a it's a great opportunity to show what is possible in life after transplantation and it all starts
