It s Friday from one B.B.C. Radio 5 life terms the best chance to set. This up for night on 5 Live on Dawson at the bottom coming out in this hour of the program we ll talk about hurricane Dorian 1st of all it s on its way to America it seems to be in a rush they re calling it the strongest storm in modern saw him so what happens when it hits the U.S. Land mass and how devastating Will that be also the German president has apologized in commemorations in Poland is that country remembers the Nazi invasion ninety s or 80 years ago that triggered the 2nd world war will get the week s news from Argentina where the economy has tanked and there seems to be no clear leadership when it comes to restructuring their international debt and so on and for US politics phone in this morning any question he was on the way that they do their politics over there in comparison with the way that we do was. It s going to be a particularly defining week in Westminster and I wonder how they see from there how different in the way we do is from the way they do it also questions to us and in an hour s time 1st so the strongest hurricane in modern times has begun hitting the northwest but Hama s Dorian has wind speeds of 180 miles per hour to ensure rain and storm surges of up to 7 meters in the low lying Abaco Island at a news briefing before the storms made landfall the prime minister Hubert Minnis addressed those who d refused to follow the evacuation orders Deadliest Catch. Just . To feed this occasions I ve been meaning. To leave the keys many advantages. Many And we mean the. Individuals within the best day. That we fix the issues to leave. This agency. This is going to last time. I gave it back. Organise warning there from the prime minister of the Bahamas it s known of already destroyed buildings let s speak to Clint Watson there from eyewitness news but Harmer s can tell me 1st what you made of what the prime minister said is that the kind of language he uses would have been surprising for people to hear him address those who ignored his warnings to evacuate. Actually it was not. Our prime minister is one who is very blunt and straightforward in the thinking and the thoughts and in his words a modified while some may have fought it would have been a bit insensitive it was not for our minister. Feels as though people are taking heed to something that should of easily been instructions that everyone would have followed it s been that kind of day here is the Bahamas when you when you hear about the level of destruction so the island by the storm and you live hearing all day of people calling for free reaches for people wanting to be rescued when you heard people calling saying listen I m here with my 4 month old baby I need to be rescued It s that kind of calls we ve been getting all day here at the network in the Bahamas as it just goes to reinforce what the prime minister said that if you did not take heed you will probably regret it and many citizens who did not take heed regretted it then you also are those citizens who did take heed went for safety into high ground and still had to evacuate even those buildings so even the pairs of the strongest of buildings still were being compromised leaving people of honorable Do you have any idea of casualties as a result just. According to officials there has been no reported official count on casualties yet Now obviously that s because they have not been able to get into these communities as yet as Abaco is still under the gun and then brought to Hama which is the next close as I lead will be under the gun as well so the prime minister says it ll be perhaps until about Tuesday before they re able to go out and make assessments or to check and rescue or even to bring people to safety so why not all the officials are saying that there is count on casualty at this time but we don t know if that will remain what about I m presuming you re inside the cab so. Yes we re in the capital of Nassau right OK and about of things been. There been no kind of issue here in Nassau that s the that s the interesting layout of the Bahamas of the islands where we re spread over 100000 square miles of water and so the capital while we had minimal conditions maybe some light rain and some light winds builder K. Conditions no tropical storm conditions at all however it s this extreme northern island is the way the capital of set up we re actually right in the middle 5 of a chain of islands but then it s the northern islands of our Because run by Hamas that are experiencing hurricane conditions because of this monstrous 5 parts 5 of the central and southeastern Bahamas and media in northwest Bahamas OK I m not experiencing the kind of conditions for hurricanes does that explain why some people haven t taken the warnings seriously because you have such a great geographical spends the people in the Bahamas will know that we can cover the entire She found a good. Well the thing about it is here in the Bahamas we always know where the hurricane is headed we know which islands of the effected department of bureaucracy is but they re effective it being able to tell which island should be prepared and should be cautious the thing is what behave means are Bahaman do not like to leave their personal property by they don t want to leave it unprotected they want to be able to protect their private party properties I did not want the Incan being so having to be even relocate or shelter and so they ll wait until the very last moment although wait until it s release of their before they actually move out and that s what happened in these areas we knew that this storm was coming to Abaco and grab the Hama they knew that this storm was going to be dangerous but yet you still have so many people that say I still want to try to ride it out also what is important to note is in Abaco there is a very large migrant community of Haitians the case you could do to see who live in shanty towns and so getting them to move a lot of them are afraid to because of language barriers or afraid of being apprehended by immigration and so you ll find a Betty of them will not take the heat to the official calls. To Bahamian Singh. Who do they think they will protect their properties from the comforts of the proteins for American government. They cannot all this is what we can keep stressing the people that you cannot protect your property what you find here in the Bahamas of that many people are just afraid of moving out so they will stay in this and their homes to go regardless of the weather system so they will face they ll stay they re still trying to protect even though they know there s a dangerous storm passing NO ONE of evidence spirits a storm like this so people thought in the past or a cow was able to I was able to ride out a storm that may have been dangerous but no one knew the magnitude of Dorian Dorian came with or whether with the waves and a ferocious storm but don t want to ever expect it as many of them now regret it will be able to do with the Off to both of Dorian on and so would it need international help from what you gather the ferocity of this already can most yes most definitely we will need the international help the prime minister has already has already said that the international help has made itself available and so the prime minister is confident that the international community will indeed respond and the kind of once the all clear is given to be able to bring them necessary relief that is needed to the people a lot of our agencies our international regional agencies are in place and I ve already said representatives here are ready to respond and so we believe that the international community will support the day U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted his best word regarding the wishes of the behaving people so we believe that the international community is standing ready to assist the Bahaman community into. The Prague minister I m sure all of us hope that his voice in the broad cause was not lost voice the people that didn t heed the evacuation certainly hope the train thank you I mean it s silly remark Yeah absolutely but what s in there from Eyewitness News Bahamas how are conducted has been upgraded now to cats agree 5 stole it s the. Serious cats agree and it s sentence and towards the southeast and us off to passing through the Bahamas the sweetest even close it is the M.B. Sees me sure just in Florida Steve thank you for joining us what we knew about how we can do or is part of the fact that seems to be picking up great food great has made. Well 1st of all good evening and thank you so much for letting me talk to you this is a monster storm when I went into work this morning at 5 am The storm had winds of 150 mph by 11 am It was 185-1245 pm I believe that s when it topped out at 185 in my entire career I ve never seen a storm grow that quickly there are some signs it will begin to weaken it s kind of a complicated meter logical process but it s called an eye wall replacement so the eye is kind of trying to fill itself and so the storm will become geographically bigger not quite as strong but unfortunate for the Bahamas 36 hours of Category 5 winds and that it has toward the United States we ve been following hard condoling for a couple of days now not for not is not the case A even though what you say is reassuring that it could switch any point and pick up more speed. It could it absolutely could there s no certainty what we rely on our our computer models and our models are in. 100 percent agreement that the storm will stall for a little while then pick up forward speed and make a turn up the coast our question is and it s the biggest question does that turn happen while the storm is still in the ocean 50 miles away from land or does it happen in land that s the difference between a nuisance storm and many people losing their lives so obviously like the storm to turn sooner and we don t we won t know for a couple more days for sure of course the other question people send in Florida want to know is when it Bob Paul similar hit them head on as he was expected to do a couple of days ago so it doesn t look like a head on collision with Florida about 5 days ago it looked like the storm was going to go through east and west right across the state right now it looks like there will be major impacts for Florida on the central and northern coast Cape Canaveral Jacksonville to prepare where I live in Miami for larget we re actually on the clean side of the storm so we get a little bit of wind but we ve really escaped the brunt of the storm there are hurricane warnings now for central and northern Florida because more than anything else even if the sort of glad fall the storm surge is going to be at that then there will be hurricane force winds and rain but it s really the storm surge that push of water from the Atlantic Ocean that unfortunately the Bahamas are dealing with right now what do we mean by a storm surge what essentially is a storm surge. So very simply the wind pushes the water into land and so we try to figure out what direction the wind is coming from so if the storm is coming into Florida from east to west from the Bahamas everywhere north of the eye has a wind pushing the water in from the ocean because the winds around low pressure counterclockwise where I live in Florida the water s actually getting pushed out back into the ocean because we re on the clean side of the storm but if you look at ANY her again the winds are always counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere so as the storm comes in that counterclockwise wind pushes all of the water from the ocean and if and if it happens over the course of 345 days every high tide it gets worse and all the sudden all that water that was in the ocean is now in the land you know most people actually die in Iraq and a charge. Sure although that way I guess that s that that s one way of putting it it is a wave of tidal water Yes absolutely not to be confused the tsunami though which is more related to earthquakes and. Geological bigger impacts this is just simply when that will just pushing water and not letting it come back out and if Florida doesn t get the full size of our weakened Darren what about the Carolinas they expected to be the ones that suffer the brunt of the storm sadly that might end up being what happens because the storm is hugging the coast of Florida which might spare Florida the storm might actually make a bigger impact for Georgia South Carolina and North Carolina and for folks who aren t quite familiar with the East Coast United States North Carolina is really a tough spot sticks out and Cape Hatteras is a spot where if a storm goes it it can really easily hit land so there are a lot of folks of North and South Carolina watching this this storm could be up to her New York City or Boston in a week it might not still be a hurricane but that s helped big this storm and it s going to be on the radar for the next week or so you know you always have to worry about the Carolinas because you know those outlying islands on the off the Carolinas. Will be stuck on their own virtually defenseless against all Muslims on the thought absolutely you have the Outer Banks There s a couple bridges and a couple bridges out and if you can t get people off those Outer Banks they have no way to rescue their issues so I assume they re going to start about situations within the next 24 hours we also have the gulf stream which is a warm river of water that runs right up to keep Paterson what a hurricane hits this warm water it has a chance to either strengthen or at least not lose as much energy even winter storms nor easters big blizzards star sometimes exploding at Cape Hatteras North Carolina for those families most hurting. And when we talk of even a less powerful hurricane Dorian what s the likely impact of just thinking let s hope everybody s evacuated safely what s the likely impact just on the infrastructure of that part of those states in those parts of the states that hurricanes likely to hit. Well you know the 1st thing I think of more than anything else is beach erosion with the onshore flow the storm surge to the team to lose a lot of beach and that is the 1st thing that goes the question of how far inland does the storm make it if it s just on the coast coastal property could get get damaged if it goes just 10 miles inland now all of a sudden all the bridges that take you to these islands and to the coast they start to get affected as well as bad as this storm is right now I don t think it s going to be a monster hurricane when it gets to the Carolinas a very bad but it will be the storm that is now the infrastructure of the Bahamas and I was listening to you speak to your previous guest about it while I was waiting to come and talk to you I just can t imagine how long that recovery is going to take I mean they just aren t there hurricane they still have another day and a half before that on the other side of the storm I just can t imagine you know their infrastructure is just going to be decimated another day in office the same fools where in this same force winds maybe do some of its strength but just think about 36 hours of hurricane force wind storm surge and that s an island so you ve got the water getting pushed up from every direction and historic rainfall in from the skies you ve got. Those 3 things combining wind and water water from the sky and water from the ocean for 36 hours our projections are that the storm will not clear out of Grand Bahama which is the western most northwestern coast behind me an island till they be. Another 24 hours. Unimaginable for us as you can imagine yourself and we see Thank you very much really appreciate that Steve McLachlan there who s N.B.C. s new meteorologist in Florida well after the Bahamas the storm as he said is heading north and could hit Florida the governor there run dissenters has declared a state of emergency this is an uncomfortably close track offshore of the Florida Atlantic coast any deviation to the west will mean a bigger and more severe local impact this possibility demands that we take the next 2 days to make every precaution to take every precaution we can and work to keep everybody safe this week to Brooke Basinger who s a journalist at the South Florida Sun Sentinel and is watching the preparations there from Palm Beach County north of Lauderdale Brook Have there been evacuations ordered where you are. Yes there have been some in Palm Beach County and I believe now maybe well yes there have just been there have been a couple of evacuations ordered mostly for the coastal areas in areas that you know . Keep it clean experienced flooding how are people preparing generally there were exactly can they do it in the wake of this storm Yeah you know people are they re putting up shutters they are especially for the flooding they re putting out sandbags you know around around our property to try to help you know mitigate some of that flooding but. That you know other than those 2 things really what you can do is just sit back you England to places that are less likely to flood what kind of scene of people expecting to see when it s over what do they think of the impact Who me. Yeah they think it will be I think the flooding is really the the thing on keep most people s minds they re worried about just you know because we ve been having seasonal high tides over here as well called king tides so you know already flooding is going to be a problem so the storm s just going to bring you know it could bring feet of water in like into people s homes and then other than that just huge power outages everywhere debris you know people are stocking up on you know nonperishable food for you know at least a week or so to have a supply ft that could last them for that long is it a typically Floridian thing that they are making to some extent light or lease money out of Dorian. Yeah a little bit you know people here are east of us especially people who have lived here you know a long time and have gone through a lot of storms like this so. It s you know you kind of see jokes about it in a couple of days leading up to the storm but this one kind it became very strong very quickly and I think kind of made some people more nervous and then you know since Kenny people will joke about it and people say you know we re just going to have hurricane parties you know unlike drink through it but there still are still a fair bit of people I think you re also nervous and they ve even named a drink of the road Yes And yeah I guess a beach side bar over here arty had a drink called the hurricane so they kind of updated it and have started calling it the Dorian So every tried it for research purposes only. I actually didn t I kind of wish that I did it is you know we can laugh about it but there is a serious side to this which is how do the authorities convince all Floridians that hurricanes storms like this are deadly How do they get everybody to understand that you know you can t joke about these things. Yeah you know I think they ve just been trying to communicate the real dangers here you know there if the roads are completely flooded they re trying to urge people not to drive after the storm because sometimes you might not be able to you know distinguish between what s a road and what s a canal if the flooding is that bad you might end up you know. You know in a canal so people are just officials seem like they re just trying to communicate the real dangers of this as best as they can to try to get people to take it seriously because there s so much uncertainty around this storm you know it all it takes is a little wobble here or there and it could you could be back in the cone indeed Brooke thank you Brooke Basinger there journalists in the South Florida sun sensor no let s go north of that to Flushing Meadows where our correspondent Russell for those watching the U.S. Open no sign of a storm where your eyes are low don t mother think so we had a thunderstorm someone really annoyingly wet day in the middle of last week and I think there s a prospect of maybe thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon for Labor Day But so far so good I think we re going to get through today without any problems at all tell us about the Bond villain who s doing very well. Medvedev is his name and he does tick the stereotypical Russian Bond villain box because he s Russian himself but he absolutely loves being the villain just a little bit of background about him he s the 5th seed here I know he will not be a familiar name to U.K. Audiences but he has had the most amazing summer very tall man still moves very well could be quite an orthodox He played 3 events before the US Open he reached 2 finals and he won the 3rd he s knackered he s got nothing left in the tank coming into the U.S. Open he s been cramping East got various injuries he s taking painkillers but he keeps on winning and after the last round when he got through and the crowd of the Louis Armstrong called it turned on him because he warmed for snatching a towel out of the ball man s hands we have ball men and women as opposed to just ball kids here and then also they were really getting on his back because he was surreptitiously giving them the middle finger at the change event you know I mean it s not just children are doing things adults as well he was just sliding that middle finger up and down the side of his head as he was sitting down to change events and they were on its case and at the end of the match he said Thank you everybody waving his hands around I want you to know that when you go to sleep tonight I couldn t have won this match without you I was out on my feet I was losing but you were the people that turned it around and a similar thing has just happened after he beat the German qualifier Dominic in 4 sets again a set and a breakdown and the crowd I think slightly pantomime ask but they were getting on his back and they were cheering and they were booing him and he took the opportunity afterwards again to thank them for getting him through to the quarter finals now so he has not. James Bond film. Tell us more told the No one so. For now. For the U.S. Open and like Madison. Who are 1st to know that there. Joking which. Yeah he looks to recover quite well from shoulder problems but it s an ongoing concern for him no question at all about that the last couple of rounds have been dominated by shoulder problems he had a lot of treatment in the 2nd round he turned up very late for practice in his match in the 3rd round but got through OK which is not sure how much of an issue that will be tonight against Brinker whose 3 times a grand slam champion a champion here in 2016 and has beaten Djokovic into Grand Slam finals a heavyweight clash expected out on Court very soon That s Alina spilling the celebrating as Madison keys nets and Switzerland are the 5th seed from Ukraine is one in straight sets her 1st U.S. Open quarterfinal will be against you have a concert as she plays her 1st U.S. Open quarter final and that will be sometime on Tuesday you see as always we bring you the news from on far from thanks to Russell for Russell feel free to ask me about my role in Diamonds Are Forever any time you wish. Government would abide by legislation blocking a no deal Brock s it is of course the chancellor of the Dutch of Lancaster now sits in the cabinet he suggested yesterday on the and your Maher show that ministers would wait to see what law was passed by M.P. s This week before deciding whether or not to take it forward this comments were described as staggering breathtaking leading to accusations that the government now regarded itself was above the law and was a direct threat to democracy and this round coming ahead of a historic week at Westminster in which M.P. s from across the chamber are expected to unite behind legislation seeking to prevent a no deal on the 31st of October but the shadow Bracks it secretary s a case Starmer He also said yesterday that the proposed new law would result in another extension to the deadline but not go into any further detail and of course Boris Johnson has come out and said that we re going to laze come what may leave the European Union at the end of October and asked repeatedly whether the government would abide by such legislation blocking an illness to go overseas to answer raising fears that ministers were preparing to ignore the will of parliament which has obviously left people. With. Shouting up disbelief really. Not quite believing what they were hearing and saying on the on the television program yesterday Mr Gove saying let s see what the legislation says you re asking me about a pig in a poke he told under bar wait to see what legislation the opposition may try to bring forward naturally his comments spark in the media wave of anger the shadow chancellor John McDonald said such a move would go beyond anything we ve ever seen accusing Johnson of presiding over an elective dictatorship in his words and he said No government is above the law is silly is do we get will be this result though this is the opening gambit for a week the you know my. Drybones saw the SUV permutations around Briggs one of the permutations is words in Boris Johnson s diary and what s not in his diary this week that s right he had been due to meet some high high profile ex cabinet ministers very much against no deal David go was one of them the leading Tory sit rebel but last night Boris Johnson canceled that meeting citing diary issues a meeting which was originally scheduled ahead of this expected Commons showdown on E.U. Withdrawal and a one on one meeting with Boris Johnson was instead offered to the former chancellor Philip Hammond according to government sources of course Philip Hammond himself been a one of the most prominent anti no deal conservative supporters but it was later reported that that meeting wouldn t go ahead on either after the ex Chancellor declined the invitation and before his meeting was cancelled David Cole course the former justice secretary said I want to hear from from Paris as to what his plan is to deliver a deal when are we putting forward proposals to deal with this backstop issue of course reference to the Irish backstop Any went on to say and I want to hear how he plans to deliver the legislation if we get a deal by the 31st of October because at the moment frankly I can t see how he s got time to do that now referring to reports that Tories who oppose a no deal option could lose the party which Mr Goh said you have to judge between your own personal interests and the national interest and the national interest has to come 1st and just look in to the opposition again what they re going to be up to later today will Jeremy call when he s going to insist that Labor is doing everything necessary to in his words bring Britain back from the brink of Boris Johnson s BRACKS It plans and the Labor leader will also claim later to. The prospect of quitting the E.U. Without an agreement is adding to the damage done by Tory rule is going to be speaking in Seoul shirt where it will expect it to say that the prime minister s plans to suspend parliament is an attack on democracy but just going back to the top of that story it s very very fascinating that he was supposed to greet reaching out a hand Boris Johnson reaching out a hand to his very senior critics on his own party but it doesn t look like he s going to be meeting Friday many of them today after all so if I m hearing you correctly every single Tory M.P. Including those not in the cabinet will be expected to back a no do breaks it or lose their party will That s right it s come out over the weekend that this is an idea allegedly from from his chief I hate Boris Johnson chief a Dominic Cummings of course is grabbing all sorts of headlines himself not least after a fired media adviser to such a job at the Chancellor 2 days ago it s apparently want to his latest ways is that anybody who is going to vote against the government on this issue will be deselected it won t be able to stand at the next election and be effectively booted out something else is there that is something else well less and keep an eye on that one because I met and that will have all sorts of consequences but meanwhile in other news you know as a result of a lazy F. All the teachers pay rises which you cover could arguably be seen as if not Brits are related were certainly next general election related. That s right a good news for teachers starting salaries could rise by up to 6000 pounds on the plans to reform teachers pathway and the proposal comes after years of unions calling for an end to the erosion of pay with some saying that teachers are face years of pay cuts at a time of unprecedented levels of change in the education system including new curriculum and exam systems the departure education has said that salaries for new teachers will rise 230000 pounds by 2022 and said the move would make starting salaries for teachers among the most competitive in the graduate labor market now the minimum salary for teachers in England a while excluding London currently just under $24000.00 pounds or a minimum for in a London just under $30000.00 pounds but from September the government will be fully funding increased contributions into the teachers pension scheme so that school leaders can focus as much of their resources possible on the front line and the department said that means the teachers will get an employer contribution of just under 24 percent on top of their salary towards their pension every year to ensure the scheme is fully funded and the education secretary Gavin Williamson he s going to set up a proposal to increase the starting salaries by up to $6000.00 pounds in a letter to the school teacher s review body asking for their recommendations on raising the starting salaries of new teachers as well as next year s PYO Award and this proposal a salary proposal the latest in a series of education announcements from the government in in recent days and really a sign that they re trying to get on the front foot bringing forward lots of I catch in domestic policies and trying to get beyond the price it debates and and dare we say it a few sweetness before a potential election. Before a potential election comes along in the coming months should it have the. I humbly suggest that the real sweet now will be if teachers can afford to live where they were once were able to live it s OK paying people 30000 pounds but if you know like a neighborhood near where I live which was a kind of a teacher s neighborhood once upon a time low middle class if you like I don t think any even the headmaster of the school probably couldn t afford to live in if you moved like a studio flat there know there s a there s a whole separate the right there to be had isn t there about the housing market and you say some extraordinary statistics now about the average cost of a home in London now is something like 8 to 10 times the average average salary where forward for my parents generation 30 years ago something like 3 Talk about 3 times a solid people just cannot get. To the property into the housing ladder anymore and it s yeah it will be a good good news that the pay rises will go up but like you sorry there s a huge much much bigger issue here about standards of living and whether or not people can afford a decent one in the big cities who are going to go the I their news from Argentina now with Lucy Yeah I asked her how bad the economy is there oh so it s really bad then this week the past week in particular has been filled with turmoil as you can probably remember when we spoke about 2 weeks ago they are going sign base so has been wondering since we had the primary elections you may remember that the winner of these primary elections was that of the front man this who s running with a huge net as vice president as his running. Or of course is known as a very popular is left wing president who govern for over 80 years in Argentina after hers has been there gets no government for 4 years so I don t govern on the security. 47 percent make 3 against any closer current president who ran on their platform of more economic liberalization of fighting poverty of opening up Argentina to the rest of the world which was something that was quite the contrary of what the Method Man this had been implementing as a president so the economy has been plunging as you can imagine the latest news was today when the government and now it was that it was imposing currency controls to prevent capital flight so basically that base so has been spiraling down on the north or to prevent more people to leave the base so I am instead for example by dollars or take their savings abroad they have imposed currency controls this was an announcement that does happen today it was announced by the new minister of the Treasury and that like who took over about 10 days ago after the previous minister resigned his post was after the election as so this currency controls basically what they will do is require On the one hand exporters to repatriate their earnings from sales abroad they will also require all companies and banks to seek Association for years before selling baseballs for for example U.S. Dollars or another for an currency and they. Also impacts normal citizens so now starting tomorrow there will be a limit to the amount of dollars people normal people like me come by each month so there will be a maximum of us $10000.00 that we can buy each month with our pesos this is all to prevent that they sought to keep start down like it has so far says the primary elections which have been less than a month ago that this almost more than a quarter of its value as you can imagine this is not has been a positive. Here is among society among businesses among banks because. Again run with this idea with this campaign promise that he would take away all they could on the restrictions that a quick enough and that it gets and had implemented in a more they control and we stick to economy so the liberalization of the economy was going to be one of the few positive legacies that the hoped to leave after his government clearly this is not going to happen and even this is having an impact not only locally but internationally remember that the I.M.F. Last year gave Argentina it s the largest loan in the history of the I.M.F. This was a loan of $57000000000.00 to bail out the country well the next ream this burst ment is supposed to be next by the end of this month by the end of September and now with this announcement on with this economic turmoil there is a lot of concern that the I.M.F. Might decide not to give this burns meant so this is causing even more. Concern even more uncertainty and of course a lot of those social groups are also very concerned this week there was a massive massive protest in one site is social groups shut down a lot of highways the main streets and they were asking money so migrate to implement immersions emergency measures to contain the growing poverty the growing hunger rates and this is what some of them had to say. We are here holding a day of struggle protesting to the national government response to the crisis that we re living in the neighborhoods we want and urgent reinforcements soup kitchens and teams that have spread and grown enormously for the metropolitan area and for consequences sounds like a really desperate situation for many Argentinians here. And is desperate situation for the government as well because to implement the kind of currency controls you talk about most economists would say you know that is the very essence of desperation only because of the experience of it in previous years when in the seventy s and eighty s and ninety s many economists impose these kind of currency controls in the outcome of that was inevitably that you you drove people businesses towards the black market because yeah because what will happen is for example tourists will come to Argentina and there will be people offering them more for their dollars in exchange in the banks will be able to do for example and then the same with trade and so on and so forth how did President machree who as you said came into office with this whole issue or did it on the platform of economic liberalization opening up the economy to the world in fighting poverty how did he get it so room where did he go wrong. So what s interesting about Argentina is that there s so we s been a lot of tension between the economy policies social movements and financial policies so what happened here is that during the kitchen Our government there was a lot of government investment in for example subsidies know that electricity bills gas bills water bills were highly subsidized by the government which meant that what you were pain was much lower than the cost of the actual utility $1.00 of the things where example that money s in my grade that to liberalize economy and to also what he thought was important to stabilize the government balance expenditure was to take away the subsidies and this of course calls a lot of. Tension with the social movements that are very very powerful in Argentina so we ve talked about this before about one something like this happens social moments here in Argentina are able to paralyze the whole country they re able to shut down airports are able to shut down distribution of of gas of different services etc So he I think struggled a lot to manage this tension between trying to to fix the economy according to strategy but also dealing with social movements that clearly were very unhappy with what he was doing so it was that there was also a bit of luck involved or unlike in a sense in this case because Argentina had a big big draw out in the past few years which meant that never a cultural sector was enjoyed that grade which meant that there were less exports etc So there was a combination of a lot of things but like you were saying that and with this currency controls we go back to where we were 5 years ago which is when I was in power and she had this currency controls we tour is or us are those who wanted to purchase dollars We used to go to the streets in one of those call the straits and there you had people that would just exchange dollars in the blue market which was call at the time of the bull market and they would of course give you much higher rates than the banks would. So this is clearly a political and economic crisis money will leave this government without having accomplished a lot of the things that he had promised also he promised to bring down poverty rates that didn t happen and then other thing that concern a lot of people now is that these primary elections took place about 2 months before the actual election was so there is now a period until the end of October where you have a current press. And a sitting president that knows that he s going to lose and then you have a president that or a candidate that clearly will win the presidency but is still not a president so there is like a power vacuum here also and now I am asking to Argentina this week and they were like OK Who should we negotiate with out here Mike you are with the 4 members they sat down with both of them in different meetings but there is kind of a political vacuum right now where people don t know who to listen to if it s the sitting president or a big help coming president the CIA they were necessary says Catch of the headlines stateside now with our very own Lynn Sweet Sour very I mean she s the Chicago Sun Times I feel as if you are not in US listenership friends and you know where the comrades in arms of whom I am delighted that we have bonded everybody great listeners we have I guess renounced we have back to thank you we all want the same well which is the preamble for me to apologize that I m not going to discuss any of the topics that you want to discuss this morning I did say we are friends now you know no need to apologize one way one but we re about to open up the phone lines for our U.S. Politics phone in this morning or one of these nights will get you on as well obviously but tonight we re asking the question I wonder if you could comment on this rock in the question about Donald Trump how he has changed politics we re leaving it like that how has he changed politics how would you what would you say and what you can Chicago but elsewhere well still Here s number one he has hijacked the Republican Party so the 2 party system as we know it for now doesn t exist that s number one number 2 he has to strike institutional norms as we knew it meaning the belief in our civil society that government has certain rules by which we follow in the example is that he. He is trying to circumvent Congress and get money to build the wall on the southern border that he was reported to have told people to do what you have to do to get the well built in terms of contracting and not follow the rules and don t worry if you can t trouble our party and you know he has tonight that he has a 3rd change he has made is the United States relationship with the leaders of other countries the United States had been a leader and now with his go it alone with his predictable behavior and with his focus at lavish more upbeat attention on our enemies and our allies us here I think history examples and law give you one more and try to destroy the news professional news media and United States by constantly calling it fake news even in his latest set of tweets turning on Fox News because it runs a few critical things about him announce that being a pure actual atory outlet those are just a few things just a few things which one of those things do you think will have or will resonate for years to come because raising the Republican Party you could argue that every leader the Republican Party hijacks it to their agenda there was a point when we thought the Tea Party was going to hijack a arguably Ronald Reagan hijack the Republican Party and you know to mean everybody does they didn t their policies Well I don t think to this degree because he the it depletes which different hair is that Trump is doing and focusing on what the party is doing really more for his reelection effort than in other and other ways I hear the music.
