And I'm. Welcome to this week's edition of folks seem. To. Be. A. Moment a. Like that one McLennan babies from my cast Lizzie hounding him a gives me great pleasure actually to welcome Lizzie Harding into this week's edition of folks in and thank you so much for agreeing to do this thank you for having me know it's growing says you know especially while you present in the Northwest briefly that you know yeah it's really good that you've come along and you're probably aware of the fact that I suppose we've been touting glisten. Program over the last few months since the album came out really and you were of the fact that it's created a little bit of a. Yes No it's a it's a nice feeling to have knowing that the album is doing all right in a high style of yet well there we go yes because of course you're a student at university level yes which I only knew you know 10 minutes ago you told me about yeah no I absolutely love mastery is a pay when I had family in the we're also even more connection to the area would you want to yeah yeah sort of yeah to Apia Well I mean regular listeners as a mention will already be aware that listen yes. One of our favorites here a favorite of mine since the release of around dusk last year in fact the album made it into the streets for Oaks in talked hand of 2000 I'm telling you about it is never very well so tell us a little bit about yourself Who are you what you do when etc Well after studying music at the University of Liverpool I moved back home sort of unexplained expected Lee really and I actually thought I went to my local Folk Club which was what for it and I started doing their sing around so if I did a couple of feature spots here and there and then I entered a competition called new roots which is really good for musicians folk musicians under 25 and since then I've just been gigging all over the place and. So you've got a full calendar of gigs and yet last year was it was just amazing it was mainly in the southeast but some in the middle and some in the southwest like some really lovely lovely clubs and some lovely festivals over the summer as well and it just I just had such a great year and with the album coming out in June as well it was yeah it was just an amazing time for me and I'm just hoping that Okin Tinubu So you're on the road really the typical folky kind of you know one stop a one stop Yeah yeah exactly so built up around the whole bit euro area were you a bass to begin with yeah definitely and we're just did it just get out was it word of mouth Well part of the program with the new roots competition is that they gave you opportunities that you wouldn't necessarily be able to get on your own whether it be asked of Ole's and I did that in 2018 so by 2019 a lot of those organizers that came to the competition were starting to book me and it was it was just it was a world where in summer it was very well for you great system great skiing and it's not done through work so I think it's run independently it's I thought because it's run into an open so I thought it was a local competition but. In the year I did it some boys came down from Scotland when a band that's a sin people from Northumberland I was really a national affair and I just had no idea that it was sat there on my doorstep and that they all seem to be kept in touch with the new. Some of the people and still doing music with some of those people as well serve really made some good friends of it as well Axel and that's really just good to think that there is something in place for young people who are interested Oh definitely because it's dead trendy again it's. Not like Naldo salts like myself. Now and it's fascinating and it's also good to think that it's more than just regional as well if Yeah yeah it's great and it's really nice because they give you opportunities in regions that you wouldn't necessarily go to yourself like the Scottish Caylee back that came down they got gigs in the southeast that they almost certainly wouldn't have been able to get off their own back yeah yeah so what brought you back up to the northwest and was just part of the network that you got involved in well no not really it was actually I was doing love folk festival in Southport yesterday because feta magazine and Neil King who runs that and put me on the love folk festival as part of his task folk stage and yeah it was a lovely opportunity to come back and do a bit in Liverpool in South Pole and then the university connection I've got a gig there as well and it's always sort of happened in a very short space of time which is a lovely Let's go deeper I mean we should say that we are pretty recording this just after you've done the yeah i think i'm actually before you play and Wes Kirby Indeed yes so this will go out after you've played too much yes or yes all goes together well but it's a fascinating time for you then isn't it are picking out spaces places that you you might say are very like the place the sounds and you know I remember as a youth me some people and some of the places say well I'm not playing there anymore yeah there were a lot of very interesting time for you one. I didn't know until kind of our dinner I picked up somewhere was that you've had an e.p. Out before the album Tell me a little bit about that so it's called Long story short and it's it's actually quite a long e.p. It's got 6 tracks on it. But I when I was doing starting getting into of late 2018 early 2019 I felt that I needed something at the gates and also to send you know people like yourself radio Yes promoters that sort of thing I needed something physical to say and so I recorded a pay sort of half traditional arranged tracks and half my own to represent what I was doing and have something to give to the public yeah. And yeah so if it did me quite well until it was a place marker for the album yeah yeah it's an interesting we again we were talking just a little bit about this before we came on air and. All of our friends of different ages they don't quite get the cd thing you know less they're involved in the focusing I mean Focus need to see they dramatically Anyway don't yeah something else to add to your income on the evening go down you know and also I don't know how you feel about this Leslie but I always think and again I've said this on a thing this that the dynamic range of a cd is far superior I think for radio than well there is no dynamic range really on a download you know loud isn't loud and soft and soft Is it on the town where if you can you know hear it on a cd and I think it's very important in your case because of your voice Yeah you know you need to express yourself at certain stages and it needs to sound louder than the previous pm really hasn't been that you know and I think that the cd is definitely you know very very important in the respect I really do let's have another selection from dusk and this is the album you know excited about and I'm still excited about you know I'm not saying that it takes a lot to get me excited or anything but it I thought this was an excellent really really great time in the opening song. Just completely knocked me out completely and it still goes really the start of gold and you mentioned before that quite a lot of people are playing but particular track it seems to them Well yes down the rounds and yet people seem to enjoy it's feel good but it also says something it's not just the fact it feels good so yeah it's a big song is yes yes and the songs are really cool and yeah and so many people have done really excellent Bay songs and you know people like round peg and Nancy care and that whole album of based on this is phenomenal and I just thought oh I wonder if I can write one of the I think you can. Was. Have the same goal to. Use. I'd say I. Say that's a hit record really it certainly is a hit record on folks and it's one of the it's here because about loads of people e-mailing me about it yeah asking me to play that's really a good answer so I haven't overly responded to people who it was a don't want to flood people with Lizzie Hardy Yeah obviously you know but it's a really really strong song I think I'm not a banjo player who's on the banjo it's a friend of mine I actually met through the new roots competition called Ellie McCann and she sings on her own she gave the same source sac is May and she also gave with her band doc who are really really great just starting out and they're they're doing some really lovely stuff with 3 part harmony and banjo just you know that name that brilliant burdocks as in down the line and yes. Well my favorite drinks as a kid she's a really nice play I mean she's playing she's not over playing yeah yeah definite gives it space Yeah yeah and it's very important I think when you're picking up string banjo so yeah and it's you know I think you need to give us what don't go my hat Yeah don't go mad on this so just think anybody just just joined us we've got Lizzie hounding him as a My guest today and what she's co-presenting the program in actual fact and I'm very pleased to say that she's with us one thing I would like to ask you about and because it's quite it's always of interest to me is about your influences music or artistic ecological maybe as well talking and what about that Lizzie when I'd say probably my biggest influences are those canons of the folk and folk rock scene I started seeing I started going to Fairport pretty convention festival. Actually while I was still in the womb so I went for every year until the resonances to the resonance of the family had an effect. But yes some people play Mozart while they're in the womb my mother played for Paul it was neighbors for my daughter. She used to go to sleep when they was on a bit of time she must've known here. But you know I started going to the festival and it was really. I remember from being a really young age just feeling safe and comfortable and also having this wealth of music playing for the whole weekend and it was it was really formative and some of my 1st purchases with my own money so I bought in 2000 I bought Criswell and really Matthys album stages and that was the 1st thing I'd ever bore soley with my own money at airports property convention died in the wall yeah yeah yeah and yeah just people like Sandy done a fair poor Chris while in jail or Matthews who are so much a part of that scene and evocative of a certain time it's just as beautiful music. But also Yeah lots of influences Since then I've done a lot of musical theater so that sort of I get asked quite a lot whether power comes from in my voice and that's from musical theater so that sort of a wealth of training is invaluable really did you pick that up at Liverpool who are always you know it was before I did that school and then I actually ran the musical theater society University along with some other really talented people and it was sort of my career goal for a short while. But yeah I just loved folks and I'm told you decent folk in traditional music. I mean do you see yourself as a single songwriter or is a kind of an interpreter or a tradition or a bit of both or less a really difficult question I get asked that quite a lot and it's quite difficult it depends where I'm playing what gig it is because some some places I'm a lot more traditional and I indulge in that sort of folklore and indulge in lovely lovely scene in some places I'm a lot more contemporary and I I play the songs are a bit more about me as opposed to yeah you know an awful woman from 18 for to say yeah yeah but I'd definitely say a mix of arranging and interpret ing. Additional music and bringing it to a contemporary audience but also yes of course I am definitely a singer songwriter Yeah and you have any single song writer influences in that regard it's cliche to say that people like Joni Mitchell Carole King and James Taylor and I think that's really it's got Connick sound yeah if they are iconic and I think there's there's also a lot that you can do with that stuff as well as not mean the singles themselves did or just became your friends with them I was listening to a Joni album came out of a not so long ago called My Favorite Joni Mitchell is actually I shouldn't say this on really but it's the hissing of some along Ok yeah there's an album that came out called the seeding of some along the way in here Joni couldn't read or write music because she could barely play in many respects it normally because she had polio when she was a kid so if you could you couldn't press on the strings so she kind of just reinvented tunings you know yeah you know it didn't. And the seeding of some alone sees her singing the arrangements Oh wow nothing really good yeah I mean if you listen to it there's another 1000 songs in there the different melody lines yeah definitely amazing person and you know somebody who I've always thought it's a good job nobody came to her and told her to read and write music yeah I would have taken the love of it saying leave it on the thank you but you cause you need that for musical theater though I expect definitely yeah had I perceived that it would have been definitely all notation and reading and writing but yeah hopefully I'll still get to do a little bit of it in the future Yeah you know you see these amazing folk artists like The Young Ones are doing the ballad of young long stuff and then you know that verges into musical theatre and the transports this thing you know exactly and all of that great performance based stuff that is also. The folklore is integral to it as well so I'd love to do something I know I'm going to shouldn't throw the baby out with the bath. So we can have babies what about the smashing album how did that come about was it a long process. Saw brainstorm and is it yes that you know how did that album come about well it certainly was not a long process I set myself a rather unrealistic deadline and I so decided that I wanted to do an album a full length proper out because I was starting to do a full length smaller headline gigs where I just felt like an impostor not having an album so I I set about recording and I recorded a good few tracks that I really really loved and part of my set but then I also felt this is an opportunity to do a few that aren't part of the set I don't get to do so often like there's one on there called Cheshire man I almost never play live just because it's a chain that already exists and a lot of folk artists you write a song and then the next day you realize that it's a popular chain yeah. And I think yeah I think at one point I saw Greg Russell live and he said I apologize I wrote this and this is the star of the countdown that's exactly what I did was just a man. But it's inevitable you'll be fiddling around on the guitar and find a bit of modal. And you play open tunings by the way mostly in Dad get sort of. Funny around with other thing yeah takes me here it is yeah yeah well you do say that is what is it Martin Simpson said the guy was mc in the Martin Simpson game Northwich and you'll know what I mean when he said he turned around and said Well you know of playing with the color and chocolate tropical cyclones and he said they really introduced me to the missionary position. That was a really nice really really good not great album Let me sort of ask you if you'd like to give me a track that you are really happy with and we'll play it because it's always nice to do you know I quite like come river chorus because it's got all the musicians I love on it and it means something to me yeah and I go somewhere I think. As the old to put to sea a very very distinct a right. For it was. His way. Call the. Lights and say. John it was. Lucky. Bugger was the. Call. Was it. was 6 6 6. A really. Good. It's. You. Did suck. Up was. Love. A. Lot. He's. Hot. Thought. Not. On. The planet. Stronger. Was. Radio my son. Yes Mike broken hands especially edition of folksiness week with Lizzy haunting was co-presenting not only is she a guest but she's co-presenting here I am but she's got a reputation say that about you know she talks a lot so that's what we want and I am going to well it's now it's great to have a with me we've been so delighted with their album dusk which came out last summer I've been playing it at home and on the radio quite a lot and it was lovely to find out that Lizzie was playing in our area as well as I say this is going to go out on the Sunday after she's played played West arts and we should be a Greg lovely room you know that. And then is it in March that you're going to be at the yeah the 11th of Molesey I know that I'll be in Liverpool University in the league at a thing. Which is one I used to play out a lot when I was in university so it's a real throwback and yeah I think value to university throwback to you know. Of the good that's really nice and it's a pure in the day or is it really gets a lunchtime. I can't actually remember the exact time well I'll get all the details Yeah it's going to be a really nice one. Well I think actually it might already be very close to so really so anyone anyone listening to you take it into a 10 but it's one of those ones where you just have to read just like a ticket but I think last I checked there were about 120 seats registered having sold and I think it seats 135 something and you register with the Department of Music that yeah yeah yeah if you just search University of little lunchtime concerts then come out sounds good well I'll recommend over the next. I ask Lizzie to select a couple of tracks that she likes and or is currently listening to and interestingly enough talk about taste being similar the 1st of these is John Barleycorn from Jim Morrison latest album but his last latest yet been out a couple of months they are so what is it about him Ari. You know. That well actually I came across him properly for the 1st time through false lights when I saw him do their concert the 1st time a folky just exactly and I just he's such a consummate musician and he does such interesting things especially with the album . That was that was just stunning and I just hadn't really heard anyone do anything quite that stroll. And it was all I played. Really for a long time before I fall right into folk music so it was really lovely to hear that both come see I guess it is that idea of fusion Yes not always judge. Yeah that's what I'm John Barleycorn especially because it really builds I don't say it's such a so of folk. Story such an every body has as a listen to any ballads and any traditional songs anywhere and he's just he his version just really plosive and really interesting to hear that the version would have been sung going in the last few weeks probably would have sung over in Lincolnshire with an hour so they so that really interesting celebration the so to comes before Valentine's Day Shrove line I think it's really a grain of the soil of the fantastic if you play it yes please Ok oh. My love. This I. Love. Stomach's. Looks. Well you'd be. All up. With the tug. Of War. Some. Must see where. Some of the store. You. See. Come along crawl. Crash. She looks. All up. I love her the way. To. See. Her. From us. She has to. She dreams sees me. Playing the. Book at. The. Soup. Who can come up. With. Now bundle up soon. As long. As you. Say. C you were. Just. Trying to. Night she. Should. Be. Fine. To come to. My leg. On the. C. B. Yes funny it's funny sound in jumble it picked the wrong track over the thought of leaving an Allison Lee such a lovely lovely song such a beautiful one and actually one of the things I particularly like about that version and the track is the guitar Yass play in the 40s guitar that he bought from a taxi driver in Liverpool Yeah it was sit in the back of a taxi and I think you're talking to the driver he said I've got one of these you know it's kind of a ridge top thing you know the old yeah the old jazz used to play so that's only it and it really makes the sound just yesterday right so we'll play John Barleycorn there's a story everybody actually if you listen in this you have to go back into the show as well gives a piece of your favorites to that but it's a smashing album as well as it brilliant album such such emotion and such passion you can just well it's put into it and of course James plane the Unitarian Church you know the road which is there's a lovely sound and yeah it's on March the 13th. So keep your eyes on that one everybody will be repeating the information we'll be looking at new releases in gigs next week so repeat all of the information that you need for them but certainly you got to listen to German Unitarian Church on the road I think and it lives around the corner as well. As I that should be really good thing excellent stuff we were talking while the track the misplaced track actually was on about future gigs or such because it was very interesting to know when Lizzie was next getting back into the studio it's always a difficult time if you busy yeah sounded like you play nice women sometimes in Cambridge and Oxford 2 in London. Sat sounds like you're quite busy yeah yeah so very much you are quite busy are you thinking of getting some time together all of you already been in and yeah so I am so January wasn't so busy so I took quite a lot of time to start recording my new pay which will be $7.00 tracks for 7 cities and it was it was really lovely to get in and sort of start thinking about how that's going to sound and how I want it to sound say it was a really interesting time but it's you're right it's always hard to find the right time because you have to have played the songs live a bit to really understand them and get what you're actually trying to say. Before going into the studio so it's a really hard thing to juggle and you have to have it a certain level of satisfaction with the model don't you take that into the studio and you might dissent dismantle it I usually ask you but it is important that so and with you being being so you know busy it's good to fit it in so when is the when you explain he's going to come out the Endemol So pretty soon and I've got a video to go with one of the track is a live video it's a really lovely one I filmed just around the corner from where I live and it was it was really a stunning experience to be part of but yeah it'll be it'll be out at the end of March and it will just be called 7 because it will have one track for each of the 7 seas mainly traditional numbers or at least today. Ranged and half the prices will go to the Arnold great stuff well you will see me and I will not tolerate. We're going to move the selection as well actually I'll make sure it's the right one. Yes oh and evocative voice and a singular voice and she's from your oh yes or she she I mean she plays everywhere now that the last year has been amazing for her but yes she and she saw started playing around Cambridge in that area. The album still very well for oh it's just been amazing and it's got some amazing musicians on it yeah it's produced by Steve Hannah and it's been really bolstered by some amazing people in the music industry and she I just can't imagine anyone who deserves more success she's a brilliant light in a brilliant musician. By playing. On the bridge. With. lying still. We all feel. Slightly. Ta gone amok some. Good some. Great. Some sad song the steel beams are. Missing. Midnight. To get hot enough. Room. To get. There you were. Taught by Golden Arm. Behind the yeah no not. It happens all the. Greats I know my. Right yes stunning just stunning great great all Northern Line that Michel. Contemporary of the yachting I'm Cindy Yeah yeah she's she's just having an amazing success at the moment and it's long my continued he says but yeah she's pretty should be or as we should be around the festival circuit this definitely would be interested if we can capture very very niceness from the baldest Rose which is done really well yeah not just as a focus of them I don't think I think it's not across the board really I mean it ventures into that singer songwriter to be you know herself would say she's quite influenced by people like Jenny Mitchell and Carole King say a really. It's a ministry Yeah it's a broad thing Ok I always have to ask this so please don't think I'm Patrick or anything it's just a something that's of great interest to me and I do write about this and so I was wondering what you felt it was like just as we get towards to the end of the program close in the program for a young female performer on the modern folk scene I ask because being an old so and so I remember a time when it was tough for women. Stereotyping was pretty awful the Times even though it always has a sort of an eagle or Terry in this arch to it which it goes and yeah it's a fair enough thing I have. Far from fond memories about some periods of time during the folk revival that it wasn't a great thing for women at all it was the one that was allowed club you know definitely I just wondered how you felt about it because you're up and coming now you're getting plenty gigs you know that I have time for you and you also still work as well yeah yeah yeah so you got to fit all of this time in so how all things for you as a young woman in the folksy Well I think that's probably 2 different questions realistically because obviously youth in the folk scene is a whole different thing but being a woman is really interesting because like you said it's a loud club and that is still the case very much is have one song and I was a suffragette and I always make a joke at the beginning of it that I'm you know playing it to group or a group of men. And there are usually you know spattering of women in the audience and it's still the case it's just the demographic of the genre really. But it's really interesting being a woman because I don't think it's so much of a hindrance anymore at all because the folk scene and the industry is so supportive to especially young people they want young people to come and arrange rearrange and interpret and I suppose that's how folks lives on is an experience one has to evolve yes and they're so keen for us to come and do something with it and start running the clubs and taking on all of that lovely heritage that it doesn't matter whether you're a man or a woman or undecided from is yonder point of view it broadened out dramatically 10 years really so certainly in the last 5 years or so I couldn't believe it when I came back onto the in 2014 late 2014 to see the variation in what we now call folk in traditional news oh yeah seriousness yeah I think there's probably a difference between folk and traditional music because there are other people who still play traditional as written as collected by special sharp sort of music and then there's everyone else who interprets it who just tweaks it a bit makes it their own makes it all and makes it so that they can pass it on to somebody else but yeah going back to what you said about being a woman I think it's it's really interesting vocally people expect more from you as a woman. Because that tends to be I don't know whether this is the case or whether it's just my opinion but it tends to be that people expect you to be a singer and they certainly expect you to sing a certain way which I don't. I once had somebody come up to me again and say a while you know most folk female folk artists I thing like fairies you sing like a washerwoman. And I just thought. You brother. I hope that's what you meant then you meant with gusto No you know dirtily Yeah but yeah I think that is true people expect women in folk to sound a certain way and yeah Eva certain wipe it home all day and the fairy known delightful is the real voice it's not us not I'm not that's linked with if it is still there it's linked with a terrible stereotype of of women I mean you know it's interesting to see how few black women a still you know yeah folk scene you know to you know walk or going under new member to from history ready Doris and this and this and not be a Catoosa not see it you know I don't think of anyone now so it is an interesting subject areas yeah definitely and it's always interesting when a singer songwriter such as yourself told something a bit weird with Tristan It's not like this. C it's. Just. C 6 6 6 6 our 6. Queen. And. C 6 was. love 6 6. That's Lizzie hounding him and her verse in the trunk you tell it which I played on the show a couple of times already I think. I was going to say that's part of the thingy and . Yeah definitely my own version and listen I think this is what we want. Is really nice to sort of do something yourself in Iran and feel like you've got your own spin on it but of course there are always people that think you should be playing it exactly as it was and you know how to. Folk aficionados remain nameless . So if I came up to me after after performing it and said well that's not the version I learned to scold and why did you play the proper And it's something that you learn to expect when you mess around with traditional material but also artist like playing it there and moves it forward Yeah exactly it has to evolve well if he's been with us for a full on a photo only enjoyed this have all been great and you must come back and you can't laugh about everything I thought we just play oh well it was your idea of the mind of the false light Salvor album here because we're big fans yeah and so I thought we'd just play out with actually you know one of the best albums of the past 10 years and the great track probably on the show which I used to do this in front of the students and I'd get it open to You Tube And yeah it'll happen and tell him how old it was it's 300 year old song you know I kind of mine to it because there he is lying and he's pleading and he wishes that he's probably on the show and it would really go into the Yeah Yeah absolutely right especially when some come it was the stuff yeah yeah yeah yeah so thanks very much to Lizzie thanks for having me you're welcome and I hope I think goes very well for you but with Kirby and that's after you know we this is coming out after it's been fantastic I mean I'll see you next week and I'll leave you with a little bit of false light all the best. You know you sort of get married and in many cultures this whole scene is part of the sort of success of your life business. About getting divorced. I got divorced many years ago. To be rejected by your community. And then feel I have been a huge. Finding out to be more about Min Greek or who is c. She gives a personal account of being a divorce see. Divorce is still a taboo subject of Sikhs. Talking of Sikhs there's a multi faith forum event taking place next Sunday in Bristol and you can take part in it to get a chance to visit the 7 venues of worship 7 different faiths. By the holidays Sikhs in the Buddhists. Believe in food level given it's part of the experience. When we talk a good Toma did Theo's the matter broadly Stoke which is in South Gloucestershire He's the chairman of the Bristol multi-faith forum. Because they did just about music like this. Put is a loaded gun. And saluted. The As catch up the latest travel news in that is with out and get even well there is flooding across the region so please be prepared for travel disruption starting on the air 48 at the Severn bridge that is closed East going to do to the strong winds with diversions aid operation of by the Prince of Wales bridge building to wish to share Bransford to the Brantford road is closed both directions all because of flooding towards rich wake and into which shares in John's own broom yard a road that is blocked e.g. To flooding Broadway Grove and elsewhere and we still Hilton wrote those calls because of flooding and train cancellations across the region so please to check your operator before travelling m r Bolton at the b.b.c. Travel Center thank you so much on an hour and back with more travel news in about 20 minutes. Called free on early pass and 855949 b.b.c. Radio Bristol. You're listening to the money Massey I'm with you until 8 o'clock now getting married is seen in many cultures as the pinnacle of success but divorce is widely acknowledged to be one of the most stressful but what is rejection from your community makes it even worse when Ruth core who is c gives her personal account of being divorcée and explores whether divorce is still a taboo for sex seeking love 10 years ago I got married but there were serious problems and I was very unhappy my parents were very supportive when I decided to get a divorce but my dad's family in India said I was a disgrace to them I'd like to meet someone of the same fate as me so I'm on a few dating apps and use a matchmaking service at the temple but it's always the same story. Sorry when I talk I said I'm divorced I do use interest One man told me I was not a scratched car it's been actually soul destroying as far as divorces go it couldn't go any worse Karen Kalat lives in Bristol happier at the range her 1st marriage but it went wrong I was one of the 1st though in my town that even embarks upon thinking about divorce and that big the word in it was regarded as the big the word but I was in a really difficult position because in the Indian community strong seek over Yeah stay in a marriage regardless of what it's thrown at you but then because we were in England the English society was saying we're actually strong does need a marriage so I was stuck between the pillar to post about actually what do I do I exactly how I feel coming out in the community was the most difficult thing yeah I got the blame and women are judged and it's always them that are wrong men can never do anything wrong yes absolutely ex-husband you know his actions were overlooked and my actions were magnified I feel that with divorced men it easier for them to meet somebody because the temples are introducing divorced men to single women but that never happens to me I mean I went to the temple and was looking for someone and I remember the guy at the temple and said well there's any 4 profiles here of divorced guys and you can only meet these 4 I find that really shocking I find that shocking because the new way we're in an era where we're supposed to be equal and yet they're still this double standard when it comes to men and women when we get married we 1st of a virgin entering this new relationship you know shiny new goods and then once you know it when that breaks down you're not shiny new suits anymore but would you say that it's a broader problem in the Asian community I think it is a wider problem because I have Hindu friends and I have missed and friends who experience the same it really worries me because of the stigma attached to divorce women are just sticking to being married and not walking away from. Yes You know I know firsthand lots of ladies who are staying in their marriages and they are very very unhappy if they had the support network or the community and the culture maybe it would make a difference I think it definitely would if there was a discussion in the temple I'm sure we would go because we'd want to me other people have gone there and help them right absolutely not giving a simple thing today it is a simple thing today maybe this is the starting point according to the latest figures around 5 percent of Sikhs in the u.k. Are now divorced or separated but we don't tend to talk about it I've come to the temple or good drama in St George in Bristol for Sunday worship this is where husbands and wives are often introduced to one another so I want to gauge opinion here I have 2 boys and how would you feel if any one of them marriageable see it doesn't matter to me at all it depends you know how much they are than love with each other the fall in love with it what difference does it make so why would anybody want to marry you if you divorce is a stigma believe me if you're agreed at the end of the day. You are a beautiful person yes I'm blushing now but one woman does tell me what I often heard said in private how would you feel if one of your children married at a policy concert wife why would you feel sad because this is what you see if you would you be worried about what the community would say if your child pirated divorcée Ok yes quite yet to do so the lot of people the reason why why some find they were any single any single boy and Single Girl why not white why didn't she really says it like it is in my experience but what does the Sikh faith actually say about divorce. Even Sing cando is a religious leader in Bristol the Sikh scripture directly does not say anything about divorce it talks about how my or it isn't an unbreakable bond but it is a faith of love and understanding and in that sense I think there are circumstances that you can walk. Away from these relationships and domestic abuse infidelity so there's nothing written in the Sikh scripture so why do divorced people feel judged this is something that has come from the South Asian coach or from the Indian subcontinent that's come on the plane and it continues today what kind of religious leaders like yourself do more to be able to meet that stigma because I think that we can work with the new a generation my generation and upcoming even children you know children need to know about relationships and all sorts of things but I think with the older generation I don't think there is so much that can be done amongst younger Sikhs it's not so much of an issue I'm glad he thinks the younger generation are becoming more understanding even if that's not my personal experience and actually tonight I've got the opportunity to put it to the test I've been set up on a date with a man who seek younger than me and hasn't been married before. I'm feeling slightly nervous here but wish me luck Ok so I know they moved here just a different copy of the guy very friendly a gentleman bought me my coffee which is quite impressive the 1st. Just to show when to tell him I'm under water how do you drop into a conversation. So I just go back to my car and I am in shock because when I told him I was divorced he did not care at all it was not an issue for him it was an issue for his family he also understood that people go through things and the one thing he said was who am I to judge because you know I've gone through things more in my life but it doesn't even have someone to Boston his family is something that I haven't had in a long while and I think that for me that's what you call an amazing guy maybe my luck has finally changed we'll have to see how it goes. But I still worry al community's reluctance to discuss divorce makes people afraid to leave unhappy marriages hyperbole this will start a conversation. Where we are men caught there and of course if you want to find out more about that story you'll be able to see and see the program about 60 votes especially on b.b.c. Your listening to me Money Massey and of course we will keep you up to date with any news we have any travel disruptions or any floods issues so stay tuned and we'll keep up to date with anything that ning in our area coming up on the program in the next half hour though Bollywood book was with the she told jet she was here last week Sania is away on holiday at the moment so we've got to defeat different people do believe cause she pulls back a little later on then talking about a new Bollywood film or could be an old Bollywood film and some Bollywood book was as well which like gossip plus multi-faith event this taking place in Bristol it's an event where you can visit a 7 different venue then use a worship so at booties or behind if you don't know much or a synagogue if you want to find out a little bit about that so that's started about 930 next Sunday and carries on to about 5 o'clock ends up at the Hindu Temple there's also some longer food free food at a good 2 are as well so tell me more about that in a short while when I speak to the chairman of the multi-faith faith forum in Bristol and as Tom. This is the matter of broadly so by the way as well which is in South Boston so that's coming up shortly Knows that. Was long. before a d.v.d. Families see the deep need to. Meet but you can't To. Be funny to eat eat eat eat eat eat eat eat eat. Eat. Eat eat eat eat eat eat eat the food to eat food to eat eat eat eat eat eat. That is some of the bunk 3 of the film which is in December 29th. She's going to do the Bollywood because very shortly. Saying well you know. My lover's eyes are deceiving because his eyes are saying one thing but I know what his heart or her heart is saying you know money that just sounds like a typical Saturday night and. You get that all the time and oh yeah I'm sure you will be there. So talk to men and then you think they are saying one thing with their hearts or saying and I think that's what you're saying basically maybe like a very bad. My son is away at the moment so. Sitting in for sunny so. Let's do a bit of Bollywood just explain the cost means nonsense to a lot of people not nonsense to you because you love Bollywood and absolutely it really is crucial and really relevant and important each week the course of the way of new news and new releases and more excitement I would have gone as far as crucial. People obviously the song because they want to be in Bollywood films is crucial for them there you go Ok tell us about the 1st film then yes so a game called relationship now of course we can't forget that Friday was one a I don't know what the month the most romantic date of the year. According to Sam It would be called Valentine's Day with a question you. How many Valentine cards are you with me. There was so many I just could not count them really that I have. In all of them yet. You know what I mean that would be. No movie with a belief of right it called a game called relationship so what I really like money is it's got. Home. The not just romance are intense you know I think having that sort of element of both I think the great combination the director is the dick Sharma he's a director on a right he's also written well so the male lead on Monday and that Sharma. Storyline is it celebrity power couple who are in a live in relationship and they take a break up to see how far that the supers will go to win them over so they actually when you serve in relation to others like boyfriend girlfriend type of relationship or just friends relationship no a proper relationship of. Bollywood films you know this is be quite common now where people are living together getting married in the old films you can only live together with somebody if you managed that I think the exchange Yeah a lot of the sort of modern you know they need it with the times which is great and . It had good reviews and it seemed to be doing pretty well. And a lot going to cause all of our school has got a 2nd version 2nd story now in it. So you had better get that love article yet. So I can tell you yes it will be down but tonight we're going to 2009 I love Of course in terms of what it means a lot nowaday. Very excited about that one and a little cool keeping on our romantic beam and well really were out Friday and what I really loved about it that it starred big and of course Dora early on the court daughter of a hornet and we think now actually I just realized that well Bonnie they don't economy original with me the 1009 Talk of the original Here's some music from it yes. The but. I am. Glad. I am yes I love our school is it carrying on from Love Aaj comes the original one it is but also what it brings it more complex it's a lot more of a complex more than relationship through trying to link it back to 2009 where you know how past choice to make a question. To just have a No 3 hatch but. Very interesting and even a great job director called in South alley has been a pretty good job because by making it relevant and keeping up to date having a dip with that a complex which varied at the time. And money between traditional small town. And of course the complexity of. That is. What else is in the new as far as gossip goes there is a bit of gossip of money in the stock Well of course I just want to mention a bit about what about the got the area and he is basically he was actually sort of . The Bollywood bug Why did he win engineering. You know engineering degree in biotechnology. Dabbled in modeling. He thought Accra and Bill. Really coming out. Pretty well. Does this show where they ask questions turn their back well be Indians think not and so on. In the program Oh yeah. Yeah not bad only I mean. A lot of it. But great Ok She did thank you very much for your Bollywood because thank you note it's a good always thank you very much thank you. You. Should. Take. It To. Me. From Love Aaj color cause. It's sort of the job. In your agency that. Shifts. B.b.c. Radio. Bristol multi-faith forum which is a public forum based around the major faiths active in the city is holding an event next Sunday during the day now you will be able to visit 7 places of worship from 7 different 7 different faiths and you can sample some of the food that they have to offer including free longer add a go to the bar Tom with that there is the matter of Bradley stoker which is in South Boston but also he's the chairman of the Bristol multi faith forum and I spoke to him earlier and I asked him to explain why the multi-faith forum was set up for. Journey for all people leave a lot of ship. Over Is it possible so that effectively the forum belong still exist for them for the on the allegiance groups and the faith communities as well as people without any faith as well so this was formed very back in 2000 full by the Bristol City Council. For of for in the faith and in the cultural social harmony and community cohesion and to promote the health and wellbeing of the communities and the program that's the next rate Richard been talking it's called the dials opened again tell us a little bit about the activities that are going to be taking place then yes that is they want the message that we are giving through that program that will stores open day it's just celebrate our regions Diable cities and giving community is the chance to experience each other's cultures and each of those seeds and to actually also explore you know one of the things that's happening and there's also for the opportunity to visit a range of places of worship and discuss many faith communities that Texas and bustle and right now this one we have a total place to worship bridges are open and in addition to that there are 6 places when us we will be formed as a designated free trail each representing a different free one is the but this is trying the 2nd one is. Also talks church recalled from the stretch run is Muslim the 4th one is Gregoire and will be a. Jewish small synagogue and in the temple on the way back we also show the people behind center as well so they can pass almost 7 faiths and Bristol So these people will be traveling together you know within walking together yeah you cannot walk all that distance and a lot to be able to complete so so what we have done is it the river for you especially provided train bus as a basis will be there for the for right now we are actually booked because of the numbers that regard and so people will be there the 5 pound thing or otherwise if someone actually want to follow the trail they can actually also door at her care. Go in there then follow the trail yeah otherwise join the trail Ok if it's Ok I think yeah it sounds much more exciting than if you everyone's getting together in the bass you can have a chat about each of the then Easy Does It isn't that sounds more exciting doesn't it that show that sure this is actually also a dialogue and discussion and so you actually understand these things and people want to assume the brain this kind of diversity and sometimes each play solution will be a shock a singing their own food you know the own unique design or actually some snacks or something and the good there are actually agreed to having the bitchery and lunch at the Lanka these are things which so many people really interesting. Let's see how every year we've been been doing this for many years now. Actually 1213 so I think it's been progressing well all these years and there's a you need to know what the please you can see this kind of thing people are coming even from Devon right so we're about we say for buses roughly how many people that be the last year we had about 16 off a trail right now we are thinking that the Sierra will be a little bit more more more than a 100 when we say 4 buses of the all leaving at the same time or just for the size we will be all going through it's like a pattern it will be we start from the bottom Hill settlement which multi-faith forum is based and then we go to a 1st really really go to the. Center and from there we will go to the next one rise there and the other 6 venues as well yeah yeah yeah yeah. So if anybody wants to join you or poor then of the religious then use what do they need to do all that's very simple they can right now it's coordinated by the some of the Faith Forum steering group which I am chair there are. Yes less terror group members who are helping and also we have a support officer can live come to. Was actually here right now harmonizing the whole program the number is actually now up site email on. S.u.p.p. . Burstall multi-faith Forum dot org dot u.k. B.b.c. Radio examiner. Edward. Now the weather is definitely the big story at the moment Emily from the weather center in the studio is no you just had a shiver there you of all people should know that it was there is going to be at. Studio temperature as we know it's very different outside temperature is maybe because I'm haven't maintained my hourly cup of tea need they put the kettle on the way to the studio should've said and had one ready for next time next time in an hour's time lag Gray thank you. So we're going to get around here up a sure and Anyway now the weather today is this the calm before the storm pretty much is I mean last night wasn't there so I slept through that did you yeah I woke up this morning and what a storm I know it's funny when I woke up at 2 am because you know and didn't get back to sleep was a very very localized because I live in Torbay and I can. Just slip through the entire thing if anything happened and I mean with the things can be but it can't be said. In the back of my house didn't hear it and Ok in the front did so yeah you might not got the the bailout and certainly people in Plymouth did. And there was. Very active cold front that went through overnight has very strong winds and there were thunderstorms embedded in it so that was very active weather but that was not Storm Dennis Ok that was coming into room storm yet but things are calming down a little bit now so some shows this morning things are calming down and through tonight and some actually the weather through tonight is looking kind of dry isn't clear spells the winds a little bit lighter so quite a night to come which is a relief for those who were disturbed last night. Between 2 and 5 degrees a little bit chilly tomorrow we've got some any brightness then some kind of rain push in so another weather front comes through tomorrow afternoon just bring in a spot of rain for a time the winds start to freshen from the southwest temperatures tomorrow at 11 or 12 degrees and then it is into that weekend storm and Dennis arrives there's quite a lot of weather warnings out you might see on the maps we've got yellows blobs everywhere yes no Amber warning as well specifically for the darker more area so the storm is weekend it is a little bit different to storm here where we're had big stream the strong winds and that obviously did have a very big impact there are still some strong winds expected this weekend to as a yellow warning out for the whole of Devon gust to 50 miles an hour inland that's pretty strong 50 to 70 mile an hour gusts around the coast but to go with that we also have a yellow rain warning for the whole county $20.00 to $40.00 millimeters of rain expected quite widely the difference is of course you've had other rainfall this week falling onto already saturated ground and the dark more area with this Amber warning this thing $12240.00 millimeters that's $12.00 to $14.00 centimeters of rainfall in total by the end of this weekend on to already saturated ground so that is why that particular area has I mean and that's the day today so they've issued that warning from Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock until Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock so that means they are expecting it to be really a matter for you Yes Ok So that's the weekend is basically don't go anywhere unless you have to and if you do have to be. For travel disruption right thank you and next week we're into. And one week we go up putting on spot though some of it still looking a bit unsettled some Mondays kind of sunshine and showers that but no to the east coast extreme weather at the moment so about to kind of more normal investor calm is weather for the time of year so it's not going to be completely dry but actually the middle of the week because like some dried a thought trying to get planning some activities I think maybe Tuesday Wednesday we might be able to get outside. There is a more of a mix of weather next week that means that we see some dry weather for half 10 but not these extreme conditions but if you need to travel anywhere tough tough time if you can delay it to the start of next week the party of argument is brilliant Emily thank you back with us in an hour's time to give us the latest on what the weekend has in store. To. Katy Perry and roar sound is that I me only person in the county didn't hear the storm last night thanks for your text Christine Babycham says at 2 o'clock in the morning very noisy thunder and lightning in Babycham in talk a it's early about 2 miles from where I live and I didn't hear anything it was just craziness but a guy I'm really back with us at half past 4 to give us the latest on what we can expect from the weather at best advice then what she said if you don't have to go out of the weekend then don't simple as that stay listening to b.b.c. Radio down we'll keep you fully up to date with that more tomorrow morning in fact we've Gordon and Laura and the busy one this morning from 5 it was Pax right the way through they covered coronavirus cycling in extra a man walking to Land's End wearing just the swimming trunks where you could argue might be sensible attire really no one gallon signs day as well yes gallon signs day. Every been issued with any sort of guidelines or anything like that while we have been issued with washing hands I think the thing with regards to present hygiene is actually this is a very very good way to stop you getting the corona virus most people will catch it from their hands used to shoes and if you used to shoot then throw it away afterwards. Working. To try and improve. By prank so they will need to get more calls on the rope. What about coffee what a coffee warm the cockles of. Coffee. Today is callin times and it's a bit of an alternative to Valentine's Day and the day was really has really been kind of gaining traction online and it's a day to celebrate the power of female friendships and I think there's really any other kind of day in the year that's been set up to celebrate the power of friendships and our research shows that you know a 3rd of women really wish there was a day to just to celebrate and the support that women give to each other. Gordon Moore our breakfast back tomorrow morning from 5 finding out what you think about Valentine's Day tomorrow yeah we're talking Fallon trying to take you fed up with him so I think you have a new ad book out. After the recap and the last night's storm there was a roll of thunder which was the loudest and longest roll I have ever witnessed and that was the time to stop things like feeling it could be most stomach actually I was particularly hungry last night so that could well have been that if you mistook it I I'm really sorry but anyway you have 4 weather forecast up today with 45 minutes of course if you go online bbc to forward slash whether you can find all the details on there also some really dramatic weather watcher pictures to. Radio Devon This is b.b.c. Radio that. Classic Hits like. This. Lance Alan. I. Can. Show many days if I can have you it's b.b.c. Radio demonstrate here till 510 for the moment and we need to find you something to do in Devon over the next few days and one for you tomorrow now I've just heard final confirmation actually through the on ally we spoke to last week from our ally and they've got an event tomorrow night yeah even amongst all this weather they're holding an event called Hot love which briefly on Valentine's night but it's a fire walking events raise money now maybe you're already taking part of that but any way to confirm it is definitely going ahead so if you're planning on going down tomorrow to the beach Exmouth beach to raise money for the on a live event is definitely still on you can find details about that online if you want to go and support them now we're going to jump forward for a week for you now the discovery screens Film Festival which is happening at Exmouth library and that we've been talking over the last few weeks are all kinds of events which are happening in libraries right across Devon and we've had Lego clubs legal droppings all kinds of things to now film festivals taking place in libraries and the man that can give us all of the lowdown on this is Daniel Clarke who is the creative director of title Daniel what does it mean. I guess which means that we've got all the program for your program of activity that we look forward to. A lot so we need people in our lives grease and I'm the person that looks after what activity and how it works brilliant Ok well I mean as we've been saying you know that there are so many things happening in lotteries they're very much now a sort of focal point in the community on May whether it's is so into their droppings all these clubs and things so now turning into many cinemas. I think they would have been nothing they've always been there when they were set out with the spirit of creating spaces that allowed people to have access to information that was important in the time that was made and difficult to reach the time books and now we just feel like actually our relationship with media is changing thing able to offer people as we are to reality experiences amazing interactive all performances. So festivals are films that they wouldn't otherwise see on terrestrial t.v. Or Netflix like a really valuable nice library and get new voices to people across the now so the start of the 24th you've got a whole series of films which definitely fall into that category what we go on so we've got some fantastic films a lot of short films really. In collaboration with Xmas pride. As so many see in the tiny little. Things and so they have some short films from pictures. Make curator amazing. Filmmakers people looking at what it means to be lesbian gay transgender queer questioning but there are some really beautiful poignant films that I put together will be showing some of those. Oscar Brightfield testable short films so the Oscar buy food festival is a by annual event that happens with learning disabled filmmakers small of the world . To put their submissions in for the best short films from makers and it's been running for many years and we're lucky enough to have all of those as part of Scott rescreen. And I think next most likely is showing the queer freedom. Specifically for looking at the kind of thing around being queer and learning disabled Ok and I want to come along do they need to book yes we've also because I don't want to forgot the other things we've got. We also got to Britain so much. So the heritage or so in line. With the ex with the. Cutest seat and maybe also got the coast see which was very relevant and yes they need to book it they can look on. We've got a very bright idea I think if you go to I have to quickly put a live feed of all dot org dot u.k. . Up there and there's also if you go to Devon live. That way as well actually bring Daniel. More events to fall to make sure you come back until it's all about those when the as when they crop up well thank you very much Daniel Clark back creative director at the Discovery screens from 1st to happening Xmas library starts on the 24th so weeks' time a little bit near and that is the 18th of February that's the plane stock community forum which is taking place again in the library please stop the library for this one and there's going to be a speaker Brian still concern us a lot more about this Brian good afternoon to you tell us what I was going on. Sorry I didn't catch what he said Asa tell us about what's going on oh yes of course yes yes well we we have a bi monthly 'd meeting in the library needs the forum and we usually in fact provide speakers that can talk on a whole range of subjects in this series on the teams we've got. A person coming along to talk about 5 sites in the home now this is all East talks all relist try to tell you that you know it isn't a question just wasting to somebody speaking it's. Seeing some illustrations and talks a lot of the talk so we have not all like issues of you know sites to you but they are on all sorts of subjects a lot of 'd them are on history all mainly on local issues and so the opportunities for people to come along listen to a speaker and then ask questions and they can also ask questions about what's going on in the community and it's the form is basically an opportunity for people to express their views on what is happening in their area and obviously get some answers from local councillors all or people that have got to know each one cross the road so far as safety zone which is right in the forefront looks of fires house fires and things of that unease over the policy weeks and they say. He has yet to get up to speed with us going on as well I mean the quotation that we put into our post is he said Don't become a victim simple steps to ensure your size and in fact I think a lot of us in fact probably overlook what we could do to ensure that we don't get into any problems and obviously we have an expert coming along called 'd Murray who will be telling us just how to do is. Brought. By monthly events so we got a sneak preview of what's going on in the next month oh yeah. Yes we've got it while the in you know you pull we've got the benches of the store detective. Speed that's what that's going to be reasonably entertaining but also it will probably be giving warnings to people as to how to avoid. Tests and what have you in the seats mainly good to. The stalls and how the stores deal with. Theft but he supposedly interests over to another speaker in June which is called Out of the box which is the gal next caught talking about the new box in Plymouth. They are going to be I mean a lot of people go to visit it but in fact it's good to have somebody just speak about it it's got experts views absolutely not the people need to book for this or is this just a turn up job now is his job it always has been we've been running for a good many years and you know we always do like to see people. Is you know normally because up to 50 people we can have attending were always we always welcome people. In the form does a lot more than just for be nice the biannual event sorry by Nancy events we know we also got a project at the moment which is the 'd team stocked up to top the Street Project which is creating a tapestry for the area a stark tapestry and we've also been running the plum stock festival for many years as well although actually cease to do that this year Ok Brian thank you very much sheets and soft I mean if you want more information of that of course you can go along to the Princeton library and they will have all the details now if you want to get in touch of this until Devon about the event you're holding you know what to do by now just drop us an e-mail doesn't events b.b.c. To the u.k. That's what everybody else says Done make sure you name and phone number so mad that way we can get you in touch get you on the radio to tell Devon all about it right away from Justin Timberlake We got the police. And you change from Celeste after the latest news with Abby next to the south Yeah. Exactly I think you have found that for me in that infamous group was very bold to do most of the background Bible but she simply wanted to do was to be beside the salad comes to see you. Quick me Stephen Stanko China's rise to economic superpower status as an unaltered brought with it I'm opening up of politics or culture far from it the Communist Party has intensified its efforts to suppress dissent of all kinds so it is that my guest today China's most internationally famous artist Ai Wei Wei now lives in the u.k. Not Beijing he's a refugee and a migrant of sorts so how has that affected his creative output my artists like a vehicle but to my activism has led to the gas or they you so. You they cannot move who is sell to one another it's not possible that's I wait on hold talk after the New Years. This is the b.b.c. News Hello I'm Gareth Barlow in his State of the Union address to the u.s. Congress President Trump has spoken of what he considers his greatest achievements after 3 years in office referring to what he called the great American comeback he said the economy was throwing and his actions have made America respected again around the world from the instant I took office I moved rapidly to revive the u.s. Economy slashing a record number of job killing regulations enacting historic and record setting tax cuts and fighting for fair and we separate all trade agreements. With. Our agenda is relentlessly pro worker pro-family pro growth and most of all pro American was a president's speech was punctuated with the aunt who gestures recognizing his guest Venezuela's self-proclaimed president when go I don't own a ring a military veteran and awarding a private school scholarship to go from Philadelphia Democratic congress women wearing white declined to stand for the repeated evasions some heckled him as he extolled his own health care policy as Mr Trump concluded the House speaker Nancy Pelosi ripped her copy of his speech in her mouth Madeline dean of Democratic politician from Pennsylvania gave this response to Mr Trump's speech that was filled with the exact opposite of what this president has spent 3 years doing he's been tearing down our relationships with minorities he's been tearing down regulations that will protect our climate has been tearing down our educational system the Democratic Party in the u.s. State of Iowa has reported post results in the state caucus showing the candidate Peter Blute ahead in terms of delegate count closely followed by Bernie Sanders Peter Bowditch a former mayor. And openly gay candidate described the result as a victory for his campaign was it your idea that we could have a message the same as conduct in Burma in rural and suburban communities then we should reach out to Democrats and independents and even to some future for Republicans ready to bring change to. The former vice president Joe Biden is in 4th place the caucus represents the 1st leg of the race to choose a Democratic candidate for November's presidential election the latest figures from China show another large increase in the number of people infected with a new coronavirus in the past 24 hours cases on the mainland leapt from 1000 and a half 1000 to more than 24300 the number of people have died from the disease has risen to 490 cases so far you're listening to the latest world news from the b.b.c. a Judge in Argentina has ordered a criminal investigation into 6 members of the country's hate Naval High Command over the disappearance of a submarine the same one in 2017 with $44.00 crew on board the judge accused the man a failing to fill their official g.t.s. Gang are still in the country the minister of interior Cletus Acevedo said security forces are so far recounted 11 of the $75.00 prisoners the Chinese technology firm Holloway has said it will set up manufacturing bases in Europe to make components for the 5 g. Networks that will build them and Lissie building factories in Europe will help persuade e.u. Countries not to take the tough measures against Huawei which the United States has which regards it as a threat to national security. New research has suggested that the vocal patterns of penguins follow the same general principles as human language the study was led by 2 French universities and was published in the journal Biology Letters The b.b.c. Has been lowing has more details. That's the call of the African or black footed penguin It was the focus of this research examining 28 adults in 3 different colonies in captivity in zoos in Italy the scientists listened to what are known as their ecstatic display songs recording them for analysis for the 1st time they found that laws governing information compression in speech could be observed in animals other than primates as with human language the words used most often by the Penguins were the shortest the longest words were composed of additional But briefer syllables from the talking penguins and for me that's the latest b.b.c. Knees. Welcome to hold talk on the b.b.c. World Service with me Stephen Stanko my guest today is China's most internationally famous artist Ai Wei Wei now it is early sixty's he has a body of work which incorporates sculpture film documentary installation aka take photography a prolific and eclectic output united by a determination to question authority provoke difficult questions and give voice to the forceless particularly in his native China oddly a surprise them that he consistently ran into trouble with the Chinese Communist Party as his fame spread in 2011 he was charged with financial crimes and was imprisoned for almost 3 months he has since left China and offer a brief residence in Berlin he and his family are now based in the u.k. Aid in recent is his creative output has been profoundly affected by his experiences in his words on high end political refugee So how does this Chinese artist expressed his feelings about his homeland now well I way way joins me welcome to our talk. Thank you has living in exile changed you think as an artist. I think he's actually I am the same now I am most born as I growl my father was I was out of the world the year I was born so he was sent by remote area and now there were people being put in this education camps but the v.a. Or the artist the 1958 but I guess this is different because you are now also very far from your homeland and so much of your artistic output in China was sort of pushing at the edges over a repressive system asking questions over challenging it and now you're no longer in it do you think the outside world particularly the Western world in which you now have come to terms with what China represents perhaps even the threat it represents. I think the West economically benefited by such a huge market and there cream fall environment even as dictatorship but it still produces. A tear on the labor and also all the possibilities the West cannot always think gradually realized become the top top. Economic force and the want to come visit is the political ideology still is the state. Polled wholly clearly announce they're not follow international standard the common values of walking to you like the democratic system for you dependent prize all freedom of speech and all those need pendent the traditional system which causes a great. Heading for the West she 25 years ago when perhaps the economic engagement with China really took off the argument was that the more we engage we build these trade relationships we we develop our ties to China and of course see China grow the more we will see China adopt our systems our mindset in terms of values freedoms democracy are you now conclusively sure that ain't gonna happen for a very beginning while people assume try and the will become a more liberal and democratic society I think is just. Call wishful thinking and this kind of society like. Clear set Perry and dictatorship kind of lust quite long I made last longer than the sec so I never change the political condition and become much par for and have much stronger young friends in many ways the West cannot even compete to face but I would never change you I think in the last few months I've been heavily involved in filming the protests in Hong Kong the pro democracy protests you can't do it yourself of course but when you look at what is happening in Hong Kong and the reaction all of the u.k. The United States other Western powers do you feel the people of Hong Kong who are on the streets are being let down. I don't think the young people being hung Kong was such a beautiful Han demonstration. Which weaving in the flak saw for the Western freedom and democracy and that completely be led by the Western nations because they would send could that's a problem in the Us President Trump already clearly tell me stay he will not interfere. And to use that as a Bogen to get better treat treating deals which I think it's very shortsighted it's not an internal problem concomitant flak to the west and ideology in the West and should not talk not just lost those. Very important battles but interestingly on one particular issue the Americans have made a stand and that is the question of why wary and extremely successful telecoms in China which is at the forefront of developed developing 5 g. Communications technology the Americans have decided they want nothing to do with it yet in the United Kingdom the government has just made a decision in a limited form to allow hallway to be one of the developers of 5 g. Technology here in the u.k. As somebody with very strong opinions about the relations between the West and China what do you think of the U.K.'s decision I think your case decision as shortsighted I think u.k. Should the exam come to you from the Huawei is not a normal company it's a state run media treat type of a company which kind of a potential danger to say to you western security u.k. So pretty Also I think in this case u.s. Is completely right to cut off that kind of connection and don't ask us I like to also do so but far away says look just treat us as a tech company because that's what we are and this idea that we are given instructions by the Beijing government is completely false trust us they say are you saying that there can be no trust was so ever as one British m.p. Who criticised the u.k. Deal put it It's like inviting the forks into the henhouse. That Fred I think is fair I think of that and the lies in if you look at the history of try and I don't know want to be trusted you know I they have padding in the higher you seem very nice history even come your friends of course in the big every sincerest the party's interests in the area buddy have to receive hands. On their interest with the party so how far do you take this view of yours of Beijing for example the other day we had the vice president of the United States light depends described the Chinese Communist Party as the greatest threat to the interests of the United States in the world today I think. He is absolutely absolutely correct in that sense if you talk. To the western civilization this party has a clear vision ability and very well organized and though they were never a compromise that is the problem I dare say there will be many Chinese people watching this who will say I way way has fundamentally betrayed our country here. In his comfortable exile condemning his own country I'm not condemning my country I come to come this the party you know the people I know was in this so-called country and the Communist Party totally dominated or we. Did tell us of a and do your life and the popular performance talking of you these days of course you're still your own autistic output is still pretty prolific but a lot of your time is spent campaigning as a now. This particular human rights activist and I was very struck by something you wrote in The New York Times recently about events in China which you say of talent amount to a sort of culture side of whole peoples and you were particularly concerned about the fate of the we give people the Muslim we get people in a part of the country that you know well because you've told me your family was sent into exile in Shin Jack and this would culture side what do you mean by it I think clearly a strategy by. Control control ourselves of the nation twined to. Make. Way where people or bad hands disappear by. Sacrificing their culture and there's irritated language again the Chinese government and I spoke recently to the Chinese ambassador in London he says this is nothing but distortions and lies and I just wonder whether you ever poor those to consider the achievements of the Chinese Communist Party there are hundreds of millions of Chinese people to date in your country who are living better lives materially much better lives because of the strategy and policy pursued by this Communist Party that you portray as an enemy of the people my father as maybe the most important the communist OJT he is the number one had take. Point he is friends of cease father. Close friend and I think this part he meant 10 times. And the sacrifice the early ideology and the completely be treated. I do ideology and want to I'm saying is true I'm not I'm not to try it now and I trains people but to tell the truth says the best way to help us and solid. Let me turn now to your life out of China when you 1st went into exile you went to Berlin and had a studio in Berlin I think you found life difficult in Germany and of course in the end you chose to leave and to come to the United Kingdom but you left with some controversy because you appeared to feel that in Germany you were not truly welcome but Germany was not an open tolerant society and there was one famous incident in a casino in Berlin where you got into an altar creation with a member all this stuff and ultimately during a an argument you accused him of having a Nazi how to choose what was happening there it seems like you were struggling to fit it into what we regard as progressive liberal Western society Well I think that you lotion. And the means to a man is not the progress of their bro society and they if you see a society. Just try to imagine not too long goal millions of people being sacrificed because certain kind also Terry and the idea and this is basically cold turkey still have a strong inference from this kind also terrain state surely the lesson of Germany over the last 6070 years is that it is no extraordinary ability to leave the past behind Yes I can see the effort but I also can see this is such a hiden structure in their political behavior and acquitted behaviors which very easily you can see the era. Of this kind cinephile be awful for nervous. For ideas or different conduct discussions on liberal sinking and Vernon I will see this summer to see if they are very narrow minded but either way it seems that you were 1st rate too if I may say so by the liberalism itself because at one point when you were discussing the way Germany refuses to take a stand on China for the reasons we've discussed about the deep economic ties investments in China and you said I don't trust all these liberals 'd even if they call me a liberal the truth is these liberals are even capable of taking meaningful actions they're just talking so you don't seem to fit it clearly you don't fit in China but I'm wondering whether you really feel that Western Europe are the 2 I think that's the exact quote one sad and I may be conservative liberal or are liberal conservative I think of many liberals while debate talk about today failed you can see in the political couple call it political situation test become a talking has there has no ground they don't make Angus and. Happen you know it's not that they cannot really a fight. Or a far right or is kind of a notion so I think. It takes a great struggle and defense to become a true liberal interesting blood lead then let's take one issue which is really concerned you as an artist over the last few years particularly as you've lived in Europe and that is migration and the challenge for Europe of what to do about the hundreds and hundreds 'd of thousands of people many of them suffering terribly in their home countries who want to make it to security and perhaps hopefully to prosperity in Europe you made a film human flu and. 2017 which was an extraordinary visual expression of these flows of people you followed it up with another one rest which focused on individuals caught in this migration trap. The overall impression was that you think Europe has failed. Totally I think Europe has been very shortsighted and selfish and has been very lazy and. Doesn't bear the responsibility and I think this is a good one would let us be honest with us is their responsibility I think their responsibility is to seize a world wide and one location in all and you were of human rights or human dignity has been violated the West should stand up to protect it of course this difficult situation is complicated that's why Europe should be united should be you know to be as a unity to protect its own values you sometimes take it too far I'm thinking about that photograph your setup of yourself in a pose which mirrored that of the 5th the young boy a lot of courage the migrant who was washed up dead on a beach in Greece and you recreated that image using your own body some found that exploitative tasteless many people who want to ponder the way George walk away always said to me in this b.b.c. Building while walking with says you know so-called liberals and just the one who's telling the story most people would not like to hear about in the I'm so identified the bases kind the idea. Besides Kirti his browser that 50 meters away nobody take the full auto. And there's this many solidness under the ocean on the bottom of the ocean and the whole nobody cares I don't people it's kind. Of sentiment I want to tell the troops right now but there is an element of ego in that putting your so you know comparing you're a. Migrant to that I was even last fall's I was in desperate situation I want to settle myself in the same position you know to understand what he's like and I get to do that and one journalist request is not that it's not even issued by me I'm interested by that reference you just made to George 'd Orwell I just wonder whether as I talked earlier 'd about the balance between your activism and your art. Do you feel that you fundamentally changed that activism is now more important to you than creating new artistic output my artists like a vehicle but to my activism it's like. The gas or they you know if you feel so. They cannot move without one another it's not possible going back to our earlier conversations about exile feelings of China it is ultimately still your homeland and it is where your family your mother live will you go back. Under the current political circumstance I would never go back. And you know I don't. I come functions here is not possible and. I'm not takes a sting in that society my name cannot be mentioned So why go back to just give extract job to the political secret he your own you know. But I think you've just said that under the current circumstances with this government I cannot go bag does raise one fundamental question do you think in your lifetime that the Communist Party of China will find its grip on power loosened but China will fundamentally change I is serious question I don't come to the party I want to have this kind of conscience or or intention to make a change that means I will never be able to go back and just in terms of the country and the feelings you have I just ask you a final question about something that's happening in your home country right now which we're all talking about the spread of this coronavirus you made a distinction between the government and the people when you read about the thousands of new cases about the degree of panic and fear in China across China today do you feel like human empathy. Deeply. I feel where are ironically the 1st you have a state which never give any clear you formation. Where do these 3 really come from. Is the question. And the even 100 lockup of the 1st 8 doctors who announced us the situation on the Internet and they tried to cover up from beginning God made to the disease spirit in the very crucial period now still you don't know what is exactly going on because it is the state not very transparent so the whole cost . If you have such a tragic. I put that I said that if you don't let people walk on the street you have to lock the whole cd as a result you from don't like people freely talk about it then you have to put them in lock their doors put them in hospitals so try and today what happens today. Varies as to 1st made in China name brand and was set up alarm for many many a sense to call. For the people of the country that's suffering but they have been suffering for a long time it's not the 1st time they're sour for the sixty's seventy's eighty's you know why is Tank crashed a students movement and we all know what's happening in China and this is the fact it's not a fantasy if we don't act up to really seriously put it. On the same table talk about human rights human conditions and. Too late you know because seeing friends become so strong globally. I we were thank you very much for being on the hot sun I was talkin. This is the b.b.c. Warsaw and Mexico City might be silos and of miles and cultures the pyres but in some ways they might be closer than you think. A machismo leaders are back in fashion from Europe to North and South America the limits of the Mitsu movement being tested. In the 2nd part of this b.b.c. World Service series and a whole again and I continue our exploration of what life was like for men in Mexico City. Last time I spent time with women in this sprawling metropolis hearing how the ever present threat of violence lingers below the surface for many now they say don't feel safe at any time a female sports journalist commentating on the Champions League final triggered an outpouring of abuse death threats rape threats my chills thinking that I singlehandedly who in football in one day and how there are signs that it's in some circles women are going to take this level of Harris months any more. Important Than That is I suppose to be after all at the end but that's a lie because I believe women should stop playing the role of victims and start taking back the spaces that belong to us we should not have to ask for permission over the last year a wave of protests and a resurgent Mitsu movements have had an impact in Mexico where its capital has its 1st elected female mayor but this is unlikely to be fertile soil for an outburst of equality the country where 10 women a killed every day and 6 out of 10 say they've experienced some kind of violence. One still being brutalized by I water and murder rates driven by the drugs wars. In this program we're going to bring a selection of men together for discussion of what life is like in Mexico City men with very different experiences to get a sense of where Mexico City is out of visited someone who listens acutely to what's happening in the vast metropolis one of its leading musicians Camillo Lara. And releasing a new. Love letter to Mexico City if you go out with your tape recorder you will definitely hear it same cells. Where you go out and you're listening to the. Recourse that Melissa. Called turn briefly only. One of them selves. And the other one by madrases preaches. It's a beautiful. Ugly cd. This. Is Camilla was a precocious talent as a record collecting 15 year old he started working at my Mexico by the time he left 25 he was the head of the label I also started in journalism at the tender age and wanted to show Camillo a photo from my 1st interview of me and a certain rock star. So I was 13 and I grew up in Manchester. This was my 1st interview. When Morrissey that's amazing and I'm 13 wearing a meter's murderer t. Shirt yes I grow up obsessed with Manchester and then when they went. I was like is these not just. A dream it was a like a magic place where everything is possible so I came across you really. A Mexican take on this matter Marcy. When I listen to the queen is dead I was probably made 5 or 60. I started trying to figure out why there was this love affair between Mexico and Morrissey. Then I listen to music more carefully what if he was Mexican and instead of using guitar riffs he uses trumpets. It's very hard to me to speak up more easy to play essentially his politics have drifted to the right it would seem if you ask me today if I'm completely in love with Maurice a would say I'm completely in love with what represented the music when I was growing up you know probably looking at masculinity and what's going on with man and boys I just wonder if you look at the Mexican music scene at the moment other any trends which reflect what man are feeling at the moment and is that being expressed it's a little different because imagine a country that has been with the same political party for 70 plus years and I think he was he has been a escape to reality what impact do you think the whole meter movement has had on man in Mexico Well a lot it was very positive it was hard to eat heat a lot of people it help definitely help and you had friends or guys you know who've been called out and affected by. Yeah of course so you know if you there was a famous case of a hill which was very well blown artist he called me. A letter explaining that he was lucky of the accusations I think you were such a shocking moment for everyone so I mean some of the guys you know have been accused How have they reacted Have they been defensive Have they been contrite and think Ok maybe I should have done that what was their reaction being both some of them has been aggressive and some others have agreed that some of what they have done is not right it happened to a lot of people the death of the musician Armando very high hill in early 2019 seems to have brought the me to movement to a halt in Mexico but that it's brief time in the country have any lasting impact on men this and a whole range of issues affecting men is something I wanted to discuss with a group of guys I've brought together for a deeply candid chat Hello America gathered with me our Berto back writer and historian. A psychologist and sexologist Harrison person Perona a writer so what's it like being a man these days in Mexico City something I put forth guest Mario Monti roller editor of men's magazine h being a man in Mexico she's better than being a woman in MacOS you don't get that in places like the subway but they're going to rethink years a very important part of being a man in Mexico City and Mexico in general is feeling ashamed I mean do you feel ashamed to be a mom so this idea that men are more valuable than women we all are in a way part of that I think to a great extent in my life I haven't been aware of that people issue that but if I think through 13 kind of feeling of shame do you feel that you're carrying the burden of shame on your shoulders I don't feel the shame. But that skirt. Need to expose that here in Mexico one question that a lot of men. Was revisiting my past relationships No I've never been a violent guy and never been aggressive but I have been socialized to be a soldier to be someone aggressive and even to dominate specially women or other people so I have this kind of fear that what if I one day become a violent person but it's not just a fear of what you might become it's a fear that somebody from your past might say you know what I didn't consent to what happened Yeah well I think that I've never been in a non consensual sexual encounter but I also know that that's a possibility because men are socialized and they're educated to not care about consent. You were called out early this year there were allegations against you made on Twitter that you had sexually assaulted women and dominated. Pregnancy and abandoned them and the accuser in more than 10 cases what was your response what is the question about the I mean what is what is the response what is your response to those allegations when when this came out doing a book thing those people shut it down and and then the allegations started to raise I just don't know how to react just to be clear you know for the record have you assaulted or raped a woman ever know never. What the consequences for you when these allegations were made everything like crashing down for me I guess the 1st things that happened were like. So I had to move out of from my house and I lost my yobs the police never got involved no never because no one made. Any of those. Is like another problem and I guess here in Mexico women are more afraid to go to the police or something it's quite something for somebody to make such accusation against you if there is no truth or no evidence I mean do you think the could have been something that you might have done which maybe you thought was consensual and they didn't think there was something at the heart of this. Emotional by a lens I guess to that effect I would say that probably. Made some mistakes this happened maybe 8 or 9 months ago too you have a new book that's coming out you know not coming out so you think I never will be published I I don't think. No one will want to publish it I think I would in the wind polish it and. Bought it so what would you do for a living. That's what I've been trying to figure out do you feel angry to feel better now not angry not bitter kind of concerned I guess but if you say the allegations are not true you know be furious. I guess that's not how I react normally. I mean me to prove a sort of appeared in Mexico this year because it made a difference. Think so make a difference had the moment. Remembered because Mexico has something of problems I think that helped a lot of people to realize that sexual violence is everywhere and also it held like a lot of women to realize that they're not alone in their suffering to a particular issue in Mexico that a lot of the allegations around me to seem to be an anonymous taken some of the potency out of me too could have become I think the 3rd Yes but the main obstacle is that we still don't know how to enact the change so that some of the allegations are criminal justice issues but most of them are not. Really Done had to deal with them so I think that in a way yes the anonymity of the. Diminishes the but the same time in many cases there's no other way to raise the issue in the Mexican public discussion. We're in Mexico City for the b.b.c. World Service where in 2017 the same year that me to hit the headlines in Hollywood a murder took place in the city which seemed to capture the indifference to violence against women. Oh sorry oh the 22 year old student strangled with a telephone cord at a university campus in the city. The public prosecutor cast aspersions about her character calling her an alcoholic and a pint students thousands of people protested and many more vented their anger using the hash tag. They kill make. Your personal life could somehow be brought up if you were attacked. In the end despite lesbians boyfriend claiming that she takes her own life he was convicted for aggravated family size killing of a woman. Because of her gender. Co-present Anna Holligan Metz with less base father a taxi driver in the center of the city to hear more about his daughter. This. My daughter Let's be him she was very curious she was very fun she liked painting and from a very young age 3 years old she learned how to read what did you think when the police 1st told you it was suicide did you believe them no no. No no I never believed that it was true all of the goals and dreams that she had in life I did not believe that she would have committed suicide. They need Mexico is a country that machismo men here hold pretty much all the power so will sit like for a father like you to feel so powerless was in their name but then generally their base isn't well no one feels a lot of importance that really that the government doesn't do anything and that one of the things they do when all these women are murdered is that they blame them in cases of family site that they said that it was suicide what do you think drove that boy to do this. Is in the realm in the norm. Thing on I don't really know why he took her life but I do think it has to do with my cheese Mormon control that he exercised over her and I'm pretty sure that my daughter was going to leave him but I'm not but there is a controlled but the only reason that there was any justice in this case is because of all of the pressure that there wasn't society. I mean what we did as a family what the N.G.O.s did and the feminist collectives and all the pressure that was put on it was the society that pressured these at least in our case it didn't take so long it took 2 years there are some cases that can take over 10 or 11 years and they don't even get justice in those cases. In Mexico an average of nearly 100 people a murdered each day outside war zones 5 of the 6 most murderous cities in the world live in Mexico where does this violence come from what's at its root one root is. Something I want to put to a group of men starting with. A psychologist and sexologist men are educated to oppress to achieve power through of Biola and means you go to a lot of places on 3 and violence is the only way they can ever achieve something the sort of economic Yeah the rational that's also an economic factor violent ways are the only opportunity they have to ever escape. But but that's. The economic Is there a sense in which to be a man involves some physicality and maybe some violence yeah of course because we learn how to be a man through power from a historical perspective I wonder if there's anything around the kind of way Mexico was forged and it's been a fairly violent. History definitely but it is as a reflection of our ideas about femininity the founding myth of Mexican society is the Virgin Mary and it's one of the things connected with the way in which for example maternity is perceived Mexican society or something. So in Mexico women are supposed to be sacred because they can be mothers they can be mothers like the Virgin Mary. If there are secret but it also means that they're an optic so then object to be venerated they become just an object just to look at someone that you can disrespect as a person not quite the Virgin Mary but I guess you're magazines oh you're a objectify women you had a magazine which the front cover at the moment is just disgusting because porn star and you have a daily newspaper you look after and the front cover. The bottom of a woman on and a man lying stabbed to death with a knife in his stomach do you think that in a society where 3 so much violence against women see naked women every day in the newspapers or magazines just makes them more vulnerable to be targeted think people can different girl in the magazine from the girl who is in the street with you. Know that if you treat the girl. You want to treat the girl from the magazine you're going to get the problems because I can see their what I'm doing is kind of artistic it's quite a piece of art to manage to put a naked woman next to a man with a knife coming out of his chair that's that's that's. I think that's certainly. Magical to her it's not helping says I You sort of touched on a bit but from the work that you're doing psychologist and sexologist what the issues that you're seeing a lot over the moment is the dynamic between a man and a woman in a relationship at the moment symbolically we have 2 main ways to see women one is the sacred one convert Seth and the other one is to see her like a whore for example I've seen men the moment they get married they can't get erections they've been socialized their whole life to think that a wife is sacred and you shouldn't. Have sex with sacred so they start having sex with prostitutes many of the reasons they go to therapy I relate it to the feeling of not being man enough maybe they got fired from their jobs right and because they are fired they can no longer provide for their wives or their girlfriends the book which is something true the world over a lot of monumental health is linked to their jobs and their identity and demand feel threatened by women moving into the workplace and becoming independent and not needing them it's not the women they think we should be threatened about but a major economic hole. Speak a lot about this and written a masculinity and so wanted to make feminism a women the enemy and I said no it's the economy. The magazine that you read it do you think guys even if you know an office like yours might not say things they would have said a couple of years ago no I think Mexican can still make a joke to me too it was a big issue in February but now you can make fun of the me too. Place which seems to capture the duality of man in Mexico City is Candace. Dedicated to transforming men away from abusive behavior. In a room to use for male group therapy sessions I met a salesman and I asked him when he was growing up what did it take to be a man. She. If you want to be a man that you have to make yourself respected in the neighborhood to not cry and not play games with out where can see that. Kind of work as you fall into or not you need to go well I'm a salesman you see the scope I could sell you this got you here that plane aboard Well I could sell you that plane. So it's I mean what did you meet your wife and I was. Going to secondary I met here in Ca a school we were very young but the problems started when we decided to leave together because what I realize now is that I reproduce the way that my father was with my mother it was our relationship full of violence even though I saw how my mother saw for it I did the same with my wife I stopped here from visiting her family because they didn't like me I threatened her that if she saw her family I would end the relationship where you physical with her she. Yes but not with contact I would block here from going out and I would throw things at her How long were you abuse or for before some of doubt some guilt kicked him as the days of way . It was like this for a 13 years until she left. But I didn't do anything about it because in my culture we think other way of looking for help one night she told me she was leaving to have a call your wife and apologize she was on the list yes because it's one of the things that we do here we reach out to the people we hurt my ex-partners didn't want anything to do with me but we talked a lot about them straight when I gave and she agreed that we need to get along for the sake of our children when you come here to Henderson your salary with other guys if you're going to get in this. If I was wearing the wrong glasses then I came here and I put the right glasses on and I realized I was the Sad One Everything became better I saw the life in a thief going way every move your wife girlfriend combined you know. I have a girlfriend partner but we don't live together it's a different culture to my parents they were always together and I'd used to say to my mom why the only for my father she says no no no no but then she got diagnosed with cancer and even though she had short time to leave she did decide to leave him and came to leave with me so in the end even your mom had enough of the bad male behavior how many years was before she left your father but I trace 43 abusive Pierce. Which. Is quite a transformation. That's come about by slowly shutting the much of. It been carrying around all its life. But is he in any way representative for a wider societal shift. Just the sort of naive thinking you can get when spending time in liberal in Mexico City something the group took on the I think it could be the beginning of a very important moment Mexico sociability is based around or homophobia so because we get the role models from you know the soap opera The Mexican films that have match a few years of the chatter or the Mexican Strunk violent alcoholic man we get all our emotional and sentimentality that it was natural now that the border looks increasingly closed to the u.s. How impact do you think on men in Mexico that sense of being a man if there's less opportunity to perhaps go work in the States in many communities particularly young men were absent. So there were just people women and children so now that border is becoming more and more closed Alltop many men are returning because they're being deported that definitely is going to change somehow I think the dynamic of masculinity in Mexico there are a lot of questions how is illegal system to be reformed What if my boyfriend my friend my father my brother me or accuse what am I going to do with it what are fail the strategies around solving the problems to buy a leans towards women the whole a comical and political landscape of Mexico shifting like a lot right now we are in that transition in station I don't know how this is going to end but I hope it's for the best. We take that glimmer of hope to Poland's next us explore the shifting lives of men and women in Warsaw. To mean you know guiding people personalty here. Can you just tell us a little bit by during the experience I 1st came out to. Friends at the age of 16 and. And that all went really well and the family why I came out to my mom when I was 21 that wasn't a very good experience. Did a lot of moms do brushed under the carpet and went into I guess denial my aunt. For a very long time and then my very last on Probably my wost coming out experience was with my dogs back in October 28th where he then decided that he basically didn't want me to be farming anymore can you can you tell us what that means to you . Means to mean finding a chosen family that I can finally be myself with my. Brothers and Sisters. Don't judge me you are going to have conversations with about my sexuality about Islam about you know all the things in between that you would talk to a siblings about. It's about finally being with people who. Although we don't share blood we share so much more. To have meaningful relationships with your colleagues and family members there. Absolutely I actually regard them all as brothers and sisters and family members as one of the committee members I jokingly call Hala which means on t.v. . And it is you know an ongoing kind of a. Day absolutely every one of them very important to me does it give you a warm family feeling to start will everybody is yeah I think for me especially because I have no contact with my family now what they represent is my family so having lost a family I've now gained one with him can you tell me through. Changed your opinion of your face 100 percent I grew up in a Muslim household with religion being forced down my throat and being in a situation where I couldn't question them and every time I did question I was told to shut up and just get on with that and so I lost my faith for a very long time and I didn't really forgot myself as a Muslim is not being until I joined the diet I was able to hold both identities to get out now started exploring religion in a much deeper way I've always had faith and I've always believed in God now I'm actually really searching I'm looking for. And feeling like I belong to the faith to start conflict with roots the Qur'an. I don't believe in. The Koran in its purest form is grand in our back I mean if you translate that into English depending on who translate set on how they translate it can mean so many different things and he died a website and we've actually got. Transcripts and sections from the Koran where we've given you know the true Arabic translation to which we really helpful for people who might be searching for answers but what does their religion say about homosexuality and how does a story all. Transcribe with regards to him sexuality us and so I would definitely recommend people to go to all that site and have a look at the resources we will do some future looking for you know. The features from a next very much. I'm very much. A Muslim in my own right I'm carrying bank events identities together we. Expanding when he died. On a daily basis we are extremely extremely happy to members joining us C on a daily basis and we hope to reach as many muslims out there as for possibly can. People want to get in touch and actually you've inspired people which hopefully they are Muslim. And would like to get in touch or maybe join can tell you. They can do that. Every single one of all the links is on our Web site I would probably say our Web site is a best resource to go on to. Our website address. U.k. . And contact us. You can subscribe to our new select tell you can have a. Monthly events our top 10 all across the u.k. . And you can volunteer for us as well say please go on there and how about. That. Let me Histon I want to dance with somebody I've been I was thinking. You know you know that's dangerous but he started you know I never I already was thinking all right when we played Craig David in sting Yeah rise and fall I was singing in the. That we could do a song we could be like. A duet. Because we're at the b.b.c. We go to the b.b.c. To play we say to the bosses hey you know here's. Let me think about that for a minute no no and listen we could get Adam Crowther on being b.b.c. Upload and we wouldn't know we could download it to upload here we can change our names we could call it ion pay. Or pay and I. Why I'll go 1st p. And I you know what song would we say or think about it maybe will decide that before the end of the show maybe I'll give a little rendition as well as move on Jenny Steele is my favorite and also one of the regular contributors on Shepherd's way b.c. Fms weekly look at the natural world around us and the wildlife that thrive in it you can catch the show in its entirety every Wednesday at 7 pm indeed this week with the prospect of losing more and more insects due to climate change and ever decreasing countryside habitats Jenny looked at ways to encourage pollinators into the garden by planning and nectar border boarders designed to provide nectar and pollen for invertebrates brim over with colorful flowers and harm with insects in the summer which is exactly how our garden should be a border where lots of insect friendly plants are all jumbled together is a perfect addition to any garden and you don't need a huge area to make a colorful impact and help pollinators organize gardeners often plan changes to their borders in spring and summer but carry out those improvements during winter and early spring when plants can easily be moved a new pot grown variety is planted. But how many of us really are that organized or can wait that long to make our gardens better wildlife habitats planting can actually be done at any time but it is important to make sure your new plants authority watered every day until they are stopped simply watering after planting will not be enough plant nursery Singleton centers now have a wide variety of nectar and pollen producing plants plus there are lists of good plants for invertebrates everywhere but not all information is accurate it is better when you're out and about visiting gardens garden centers or plant nurseries to make sure you have a notebook with you and jot down the names of anything that seems to be buzzing with life whether you're starting an active border from scratch or adding to an existing area planted small groups of 3 or 5 of the same plant if you can a mass of one color is more likely to attract bumble bees and butterflies than individual plants started here and there choose plants that flirt different times spreading nectar and pollen production over a long time period will benefit a wider range of invertebrates late summer flowers are especially important for insects building up energy reserves to get them through hibernation in the winter and don't worry about planting everything tall at the back borders can look more interesting with Heights a bit jumbled up to make good use of space some plants have both nectar and pollen including the been a binary and sis Ecan a seer and economic. Herb's such as time kept Mint Burridge and Marge room will cater for many species of butterflies and be well lavender has seeds for birds to. To maybe not. To create the path think. We've. That was the. Driver I had that one for a while used to be played didn't played and played now maybe we could cover that song. Maybe his affair. You have to wear the dog reserve where we're in a bit but still to come on the best of. B.b.c. Radio Bristol and b.b.c. Some of the Super 61 of breakfast and a taste of China with fast when celebrity chef a lot of the girls that's what key facts are all right in a walk you know well all right well he asked when celebrity chef Larkin Sen joined the Friday freckle team so at the beginning of Chinese New Year before that I mean my element now because it's time to get all theatrical Yes Yes In the 2nd of our clips from shout out today Bristol music comedy club popped into the studio to tell the team about their latest production of. The show began by asking director of jeans and choreographer Charlie Elon what the show is all about when is actually based on which is very much very much like Mr Graham was based on Madame Butterfly . Was the inspiration for the or the big Bohemians was the inspiration for for rent but obviously the period was up to date and it was set in the ninety's which is sort of just after the core aftermath of aids and it's about the fallout not not not just from the sexual side of aids but from the drugs side of aids and everybody trying to cope with it afterwards so it was very very pertinent at the time a very very sort of revolutionary if you like so I didn't really feel it and you know none of them are honest but he didn't see it he didn't see it he was writing it for years and years and he had a undiagnosed heart condition and on the dress run it was the dress one was performed and he had a went to a party afterwards and and had a heart or chest problem and the preview was supposed to happen the next night which he did but he never made it because he did. Have an aneurism a heart and you know as I'm saying you know the course is going on for those the music was one of the iconic ones the kind of reshapes of a. Things you can do with me Sickles didn't it it did they the history of music who have always been interrupted by pivotal show completely revolutionized the musical by adding a story Oklahoma revolutionized the musical by adding a story through choreography some time obviously state today's issues into the musical and by the time we got to have and then rent we started to use what music in the musical form which hadn't been used before obviously now with Hamilton and lots of things that that's commonplace but back then it never been done so rent was revolutionary to set the scene set the scene for us how how does how does it start the story on and rent and how it then progressed I don't want you to give away the ending but it be nice to say no to be fair I mean slightly different from the opera lovers out there well we all know the story already it's about a group of Bohemians obviously in this iteration it's rock musicians it's performance artist and so on and they live in a down and out part of New York and it's very good because it covers all types of personal types of gender all types of sexuality so it was very ahead of its time for covering those issues yet you have everything you know I don't know but you know what the old interaction was when it 1st came as a musical I mean what was it was it taken with that kind of a wow that's quite Absolutely. And that's why it won say many awards I mean it won 8 Tonys Drama Desk Awards and it won the Pulitzer Prize which is very very unusual I think I could be wrong but I think how much in just one the put the Pulitzer Prize which is the latest musical to have changed history and yeah yeah so tell us a bit about the group is performing it on a because of the peony. Yes this v.m.c. a Little musical comedy club and they're brilliant the cost is incredible really really strong very lucky yeah very strong we all see we're only auditions and you felt like you could have passed it many times but they're really accomplished great singers great dance practice say it's going to be something to behold I think love even use the Redgrave Isn't it was you know. If you used to the big ones like the lies a lot smaller a little more it was a lot more intimate isn't it. Proved challenging so depending on how we can fit one of to before both Charlie and I have been doing shows for years and years and we've done the most of our career in and out of the Red great theater so it's not too much of a pressure person because we know everything about it and sometimes you know an intimate theater is really nice for something that is a story a story like this there are both very sore small and dark details you know sometimes big stories are great for board theaters but to get more intimate and to touch the audience sometimes a smaller theater is really really useful he just didn't want to us she started running we started with singing just because the whole like he said the whole show was singing so i'm day it's incredible he's been doing loads of singing with them I think he's been surprised at how quickly they picked it up they're really talented bunch and now we've got the lyrics and the music we're just trying to add some movement and setting and it's looking really great what kind of early days but it's going very quickly as well sorry well. We've got you come back close the Times is right you'll It is. Tonight that may actually if you come in the evening now it's a little bit cheaper as well but yeah but now cars are starting to sell We've already sold for a few so you go to the red graphic website and tickets are available on the website you can also see what's the you want to sit in there which is really sort. Of this still b.c.f. Thing on b.b.c. Radio. Breast and b.b.c. Some say. So don't rock the boat Ivan that far is there on the best to b.c. F.m. Did you get the message you are because I'm a fellow to Chad I mean yeah I was saying you know I said Well Ok and you tell me it's not work it's walkie talkie so I'm hopin that I can tell you off cold then they haven't. Done anything yet so could you just deliberately make a mistake in Saturday's allow me to tell you off let's move on. Sandra Golden is no stranger to the wonder of breakfast show as well as one of the co-founders of the rise award she's also a broadcaster on Jima radio yes she's got I think is in a lot of parties now this week Sandra came in to talk to Pat and the team in the middle of breakfast about the Super 6 and a volunteer event they have planned began by asking who the Super 6 l 6 Bristol's black organizations we've got together and Microsoft can imagine that groups coming together that we realize how much we have in common and sometimes you know not so much that we're where fighting against each other but didn't definitely is something we'd be fighting to get that conversation and let's yeah let's not kind of like you know let's mention the elephant in the room is that sometimes and especially. The predominantly for run by people from Bain communities you have almost forced to say listen there's a few ground you up fight for it so I think one of the key things there for us coming together is just realize that actually we've got a lot in common and maybe if we started working more together we can kind of 13 the pool our resources and also we've all got different skills within each the groups help each other towards sustainability because that's really what all of the 6 groups need right. Here we were only talking yesterday so Felix wrote of edge of playground up our street an Eastern community center have merged when when you think about it and people panicking on it what's going to happen I want to keep their name but the thing is that they've moved because of sustainability because time and time again one organization might be in problems because of finances and they cannot afford to run them there is somebody that runs out in isolation that's got expertise it could help that organization and all of a sudden when you combine your expertise as well and you cooperate and you say do you guys want to come to this and whatever things become a little bit easier that definitely and I think that's what we found we know many of them for what that's less than last available in organizations we don't want to just rely on funded by the white guy sure we have to look at different ways that we can. Rise they should or otherwise we're going to find especially Baby led organizations start to. Disappear Ok and that's definite what could happen so we've come together we can start to create in some great relationships so we put together this is office the van that would do in is that what seeps x. I love a lot of it so talk about. The 6 organizations who are so we've got huge amount yet we've got black cameras pressed about cameras you've got the market next we've got staples carnival Bristol Somali for. The Mali. Pretty So we're going to isolation is the need for individual reasons kind of support you're involved with to kind of probably move into but you know you're part of the governance of 2 of the organizations Malcolm x. Center I did you Meridia I love unity and I think Unity It's a beautiful thing it's a case of getting because we're here in the city but we're not doing things together. And I agree with you on the unit say that ask. Week so I want a sudden we're on the same agenda in the ring and we'll try to support each other in the ring to helping each other so there isn't my oh there's a pot of money and we'll try to fight for it there was none of that there's such a wow you've got the same problems that right you know within my organization how do you know I've done this this can help Pete given each other advice so it's time to kind of not pull How do we get over that fear because you know anyone listening and we know so yourself and pram. You dream Arabia for example so when a pastor Jima b.c.f. Air you know fight in you know fight him down the alley way and Roger and it wasn't just as it was other organizations too and sometimes it was over advertising or funding or evolution is so of course many of those many of those disputes are based on fear and ignorance. Could be talking about racism and also a phobia about but fear and ignorance so how do we get over that fear when when you approach these groups and I'm sure you know each group will have workers then some will have board members not everyone will want to be together some might want to leave and go I don't think it's a good idea they'll take out money and whatever how do you get out those problems you know I think I have doing something for instance of what we've done come in really yet been very open and honest because it's about built in trust and absolute 1st stage about built in trust is just getting everyone together you know because sometimes we see each other we cross we cross Paul's embarrass different throughout the city but we do actually spend time together talking about what some of the challenges are talking about what some of the opportunities are create trying to do that so this is what this is that's really what the whole program is really for us and it's about moving forward and we hope that could be the Super 12 or 18 or a number that may be so we kind of build and build it because it be great to have a massive organization. They embraced all that we pool our resources and that includes expertise to create a lot more sustainability in our longer term organizations because like I said we all kind of do interact with the same way we want to support. Communities within Bristol so people listening now that have some affinity or interest in all of the organizations that we've mentioned. For the general public can come and and learn more to tell us what their experience when they were a bit write bass if everything's run on volunteers you know all these organizations would an excess in that you know less we didn't have a parts stop this fall into a pace so we're always looking for volunteers and I think some people know a little bit about these organizations so it's not you just to come along speak to each of these 6 groups find out what they do and find out what opportunities we happened within each of those community groups in terms you can get involved so something like St Paul's carnival people thing is a one day event it isn't you know it's 12 months hard work. To get involved so I think it's just kind of open it up to the community and say look we're here come and talk to us come and volunteer with us. G. S. G. I love those long fade outs musical You Pass the Dutchie now I think I've come up with a short list very quickly one of songs that we could cover so it could be Elton John Allen's on Kiki the yeah you're breaking my heart you suggested Sonny and Cher Yes I got you baby guess what I've gone for Donny and Marie Paper Roses Oh hey there's a new you do the harmony and we wear those orange jumpsuits I've been told to do have a look at Cher though you know fall just need a bit longer hair that's going to be Donny and Marie Ok now with the outbreak of the coronavirus in China new lunar new year celebrations may have been a little muted over there but here in Bristol most went ahead as planned yes Larkin send is the celebrity chef behind walkie fest to the annual Chinese New Year festival at Wapping wharf and Tobias John interviewed him on the Friday breakfast show he started by asking Larkin how he got into cooking and about his experience on Master Chef 7 years ago and how I taught him to cook is a bit of a long story here so there's a lot I was a lawyer before so my passion was kind of like cooking Ok I can like I really want to the submarine restaurants and stuff like that my parents didn't really want me to do I was in the group and take what you see so you always like kept me away from it but I was always quite fascinated by cooking and supply than his is in the family so at the. End of that I was at my desk one day and I thought right I'm definitely going to quit my job this year and I didn't really watch Mascia before where everyone knows of it as a brand you know yeah so I decided to put an application in and that I'm going Vita to a casting day cookoff and stuff like that and then about 3 months later they call me and say Ah gee fancy coming on the show. And I was and then I had to take up 4 month sabbatical from work basically I told Tom across about it and feel like you're Can you cook because I think. They're like Ok fair enough I think they all thought he'd be back so yeah from what I won weeks of article and being too weak and they kept going on that I kept having called back to work as I am or I'm still in. And I was like 4 months off work to do it so most been quite quite daunting then in some respect I mean it takes quite a big thing to follow your passion and put aside I guess what you know is a guaranteed form of of income in some respects to put that aside follow your passion and take a risk in some respects and Holmes quit uni my 2nd year to do it so for me psychologically I was already out of it so if for me it wasn't that hard doing it I think the real test was actually after the show with me actually because for the 1st year in my business my 1st business actually I set up with a another finalist on the show right didn't work out you know we just weren't experienced enough but I can't live and that living off credit cards for basically year Ok a mass huge debts the company went under and it was huge personal guarantee against my name but it took me but then luckily I had secured a contract with the Celtic Manor which is terrorism and then it got me out of a bit of a hole that's over just near Newport and I made of and I think it was you know they gave me a restaurant in my own name so that got me out of the hole. So I was able to repay a lot of debts and have a little bit to set up walk eco Yeah and walking more because like it was a bit of a riffraff sort of operation that started it was me in 2 of the chefs because that's all I could afford. And like I fit out based on no money like our basic put it together which many fell apart with. Luckily we were able to repay all of that within 6 months and then from then it just kept flying and you know now no we do really well like our turnover is like over a 1000000. And also you know we've got team of 40 employees north which is which makes me really proud you know but it's all down to them so now you've got a master chef is quite far behind you 2013 we're now in 2020 and from from that point now until where you are now with the restaurants you've got and the kind of success that you are experiencing Do you kind of put that down to that one key moment when you went on board to Master Chef and that everything that kind of changed from that point onwards. Open up blood Yeah definitely you know it definitely would have secured the Celtic man a contract but I guess it was premeditated I knew he was I had nothing to lose basically so I knew if I got far enough. I could really visualize again far as well like I remember saying to my dad it's just like I think I'll get to the final by will win because I hardly ever cook Yeah because every practice I don't think I practice enough to win it and that's exactly what happened but I guess the real learning happens afterwards most of the mosfet find this have really should we say this. Really kind of thing. It's like it but you know I compared to where I was 6 years ago because I fully dedicated to this trade you know doing about a 100 hour weeks or just constantly learning about food elevating it. I think is that dedication that. She keeps pushing you on so actually the real learning happens afterwards for those that don't know what the 1st is happening a whopping war. Will feature Chinese New Year celebrations and I'll let the man himself tell more about it so this is not the 1st time this is happened is that how many. This would be the 3rd 3rd So the 1st year. When we 1st set up in the converted shipping container restaurant we did ask on line dance and we branded it as Walky fest because we wanted to get people really involved in it because I walked in was a definite community help and actually we want to get people involved families and stuff about getting introduced to sort of Chinese culture the 2nd year was better than that and we had a bit more budget the spend and and actually this 3rd year we've really gone for the on that we've got a much bigger team I'm sorting out I'm bringing a lot of entertainment throughout the day for it also it looks fantastic the type of when you've got. Conferee performances put making workshops loads of things that the Chinese law and dance troupe will be putting on a. Traditional Arbor for dance performance as well so it's really full on is an open war that area is so kind of unique in the way they looks and the way this set is well it seems almost as if it's the kind of the perfect match for you in some ways are massively and I think everyone there because it's such a strong community how to know all the trade is really involved as well so you know we had a meeting to see what we could do with each other to make it really for events and I think a lot of them putting on special Chinese New Year men used the event and that's great. Going off I'm already I've been wise that explained how I taught him to cook Chinese food lucky number I'm not impressed I think about telling you think Yes Ok . Definitely. Stand by on this show next week we'll be debuting a brand new single p. And I missed the name of the band and it's going to be Paper Roses a cover of the Donny and Marie classic and percussive walks as well yes there we could but Larkin's not invited numbers don't come in unless he comes clean about how he learned to cook. For the best to be c.f.m. I hope you enjoyed our little golden nuggets one Ok move to yet do get in touch with social media if you want to be c.f.m. Radio or just broken the desk. With the cards. Right and. Try. And make. Sure. That. You're. Getting. They're. Just. Going to. Say. C.b.c. Sounds like a good place to. And welcome along to the most of them to show for another Saturday morning pinch of the punch for the 1st of the month that is.

Oh would you look at that he has an award score sheet from 1972 mom had 142 points I was sick and Gordon and dad would join that and you would never that a good use going to pull. And just get the 70. 00 hits you I didn't recognize you but I think the families are notified they. Have you been old enough. I know you'll definitely need to take them. You Out to the company club they are you on just up to the plate because that's all the more you can do not good because you're Ok well shit if valid just going to be shallow because that's probably hard to tell you but they say you do you do it in your face you could be a. Good they are I. Try. To please something you know for just a little pity I don't think you'd in the loop but that oh please oh good I'll put the candle up. As it's 7 waitress That's right as dad used to say one little show at the billboards why he is a Roman guard had to choose some way or pointed off to be here. Or like it there's nothing till like nothing ever happens and that's why I like you if anybody and everybody knows you and everybody knows that nothing ever happens don't you ever want to live somewhere else. No just over that we say to war they're more into the squad school and not just Glasgow more into the cities and turns they have clubs cinema discotheques as well we've got the company club here all hold me back over there more of those lords of clubs over there Moira up there so you can go enter your club and meet some the They've never met before have well you can do that here too during holiday season sometimes but don't you want to go it was cool just to see what it's like Norm I can look at pictures to see what it's like and I've looked enough pictures to know that I don't like it but other places come on look over and Paisley Well I definitely don't want to go to peacefully it stab you as soon as look at you in peace they would noise lewd everybody stabs everybody and peacefully it's the Paisley way of seeing how long rubbish people in Paisley are so wedded about their unconventional use of knifes that the eat everything with a spoon. Pickle it or the one nearest the beginning of the alphabet goes 1st. Oh I've miscues a plate of I got for bob here and the whiskey for myself stopped rationally document aside from the fact that in Bruce's swarmed off to the mainland leaving me behind this battle not only now also then Mind you I am a pension after another from you Bob's will be and may be slow but at least I do my job all of you can something on your mind have passed the expat man pushed a leopard some morning it's not at the door mat till nearly 09 if I delivered it what difference does it mean when you have. A sex. Mormons of moods to deliver and some money. That's not true but can you prove it don't know. Here take that. Well as I walk you talking manly husband Bill was a Usenet in the war you take that man out he who got this one from number one if you delete my post in the morning I'll be balky talking you to find out exactly where you are at this can we have more drinks now I suppose so now you know you can get away with disappeared on me. W. C Oh well then me 1st typically. You go. Oh my God I can't see anything you need to put money in the meter there's a 50 pence under the biscuit tin. So Barker Stuart gave. I just something war like. My. Mother is normal Ok so. There is no bell and the fridge awaits is the sterilized as a part where there's a big tin of marble in the cupboard. You know what's wrong with you adding It's just. Sad sad I. Know you know it's sad seasonal adjustment disorder it's that disease when people get depressed because the weather is bad apparently Prince is smack to get something off the fairies on or off the phone doesn't he walk and I have dog's job all over my tights I am not depressed because the way it does I am sure you are right and so my plan says Margaret b. If she was stuck in the silence with you yes come aboard I'll back kind of marvel. You know you'll be wanting a game of Scrabble How did you notice me well whenever I get to a point in my life when I truly believe things can't get any worse up here to improve matters oh that's not what's he doing I can this with some milk there's nothing as miserable as being caught in a storm is there any milk you must be psychic maybe no then we just have moved all right oh. I think he's doing something it's me I suppose I'd better go and change my type but I didn't know she was that scared to storm let me keep you both as a part and just leave so do you want to know the news for what we have to go to stop she could hear what that's 95 percent of the population of the island she has gone missing. Betty Stockton has disappeared. I don't like being alone I should never have let it go. At least if the Mafia come to get me she'll not be here to see it. Because here I'm. On my own. Well have a shot at me see that there if there's one thing worse than the Mafia and the passon which stepmother have to thank have to find something worse than the Mafia but if that was to be one thing watch than the Mafia it would be be you know you know and when it's stormy you know all kind of happenings up in happening with their day and skip I say. The best thing for this kind of scare is operandi Yes Brandy very good 1st guess. What kind of a doctor father would have a brandy when his adopted daughter was away that Fred's. A very good one. There she stops and always comes into the Ritz for the whole pie and piece every weekday at 20 past every week whatever the weather for the past 30 years or so so she has an innocence lady so it's weird so no assume so she hasn't been as a stranger she's going off patent a person who goes in for a hot. Deeper 30 years that doesn't suddenly go off. And even if she did a menu is extensive enough to cover the most video of teeth so excuse me Delia So have you done anything about the will on the Monday I noticed an official there told that he had no it's been fully focused on his quota for so on the choose to be were waiting and she still didn't appear to be after him to see if anyone could remember Sr since the freighter needed to treat so to d.s.s. Tell there too if she's not here to 20 past the whole pie in peace I'm going right up to her house and chop in a door and find out why she has been for the whole club and you know what she was near Did you know. So so there she has disappeared ship who just was me and so on the door knew I had seen you're wrong because when we didn't get an answer we opened the door and went and looked all over the host just to see if she was maybe just a new dad but she was just with me there. Oh she's probably just going over the whole body without taking anything without killing anyone. Cohort is awful blue isn't just your tale if you're feeling nervous writing them a fiction before you do another kid it hates you wanting a game of Scrabble Oh yes not the lovely manger you have to excuse my failing but my formative years being spent in a children's home in my rudimentary education having been equally he's playing on nor how many counters as it's 6 or 77. Humdrum Oh so that Spore and ones 5 and threes 82101112 double 3 is each team and that's me used all my little so I get an extra 50 points on top so that 60 for me no more it means get your hands of the it's me 1st idea appears to be even more negative than usual loiter because she couldn't get to the mainland tonight to the really good she want to go there for you know either she didn't mention going to pieces we know she sighed and you don't want to do that you know what if there's a new one nor they eat everything with a spoon to Betty have any enemies who know but that you have any dangerous enemies we don't have that sort of person here and little. More that there's all sorts to come over on that ferry and commit God knows Bunty pierce the whole by this great school lesson must we are all by and besides we are not that far from going to your c.p.s. Lee I'm going to. I'll bet with think she's been done away with. A. Hall how come he didn't have to take the war relic before he got served because that Imogen Bob is made to be dad is Bessie's dad Miss Bess and besides the poor would be so needs if he's been stuck on a bus when I'd be out in blues all the p.s.l.e. Act couldn't think of anything less. Mantillas was wrong but I'm a better I just say Ok but. I thought I had to get around something very terrible happened they have to think that I'm up your job he does does he appear to think everything's a mafia job so for the Mafia with the come to Millport and month or some day and Lacey had a reason and who's to say they didn't have a lease with any signs of a struggle in her house No Like I said nothing was touched Oh well then it could be the Mapi they're meant to be they thought it was not the mafia How do you know I just know because I'm of 11 at the way for a start the p.c. Mafia guess where they live. The life of course feel free to state the obvious as a power cut it could just be the meeting again as there's dogs jobby all over the kitchen floor when it's just a thought for a parent car after a candle in the I can just not surprised there that's better I'll just go and check the meter so what do you think happened to their destruction it's probably just meant to get a whole pie in peace and get lost How can you get lost in an island that small I don't know but I there are so many times I wish you would fain don't they hear me go look all better it was the meat. But you still. You seem awful sure that the Mafia having ability still just know we have to 50 is in so will be all right and when I said I'd been told you already knew she disappeared because you already said she had you know you surely don't think that I hadn't had anything to do when something so mysterious happens as a pensioner disappearing into thin air and wish everyone must be under suspicion so we have here been since Friday then yeah Pynchon on Room of the door since Friday I've been asleep and the toilet in the cafe Russell there too I have had absolutely no time to get rid of Betty sturgeon and I don't hear you volunteering really has been since Brady I've been working split shifts in the comedy club so that I could end some time off to support you all great so you didn't have time to get ready based on Geneva Personally I have had the time to get rid of bed. Even with the busy shed you will it is possible to make anything when you involve careful planning but. It's a mystery to me. So it was me one of us possibly a kind of the many things scarier than being stuck in a house the storm in a plane Scrabble with a model that would be enough to do in a whole lifetime Aetate say I mean I think I start to have an obvious that it is that this is not the God of the Not Yeah Ok Is he talking about and nobody and that course but I do not know one minute believes enjoyed the map Yeah well she has new jointer maffia What has she done. Have you heard of the band made a triangle worked the Bermuda Triangle that's what got him on a limb it's an easy of seeing when you miss boot ships and planes a vanished due to a strange phenomena for talking about show so what if it wasn't someone who made Betty's dungeon disappear what it was something what if it was a strange phenomenon you know like Picnic at Hanging Rock. For a hope in peace and disappeared. The story. When unsuspecting school shut up this is a lot of come by nothing ever happens here where nothing happens in those other places either until one day something happens yes and out of all the places in the world where nothing ever happens id why should it be the only place for nothing really does. A strange phenomenon. If it worked if that. Be the biggest to such actions and so look stuff never mind going to the meat mind I mean 100 become an over he has. Attractive people may come here young people even more into. The diminished effects of forward we need pains we need people we need to do all the station may have gone. Before we start going to everyone just take notice of this mark of the. Year notice the red brick mark strategically between here the Ritz County and here better start in toast with the minister Mr notebook and. Attention please I got 19 while you haven't yet we caught a bad tell them why we are here part just get into the. I'm no half way from a vegetable us to. Yes Mrs Pierce late and to clear this meeting of the mill portrays the committee open hang on a minute to meet contact with do good morning recording Dougie come in Dougie. My recording don't get rid of I give Dougie. I'm going to. Tell him to walk back up to be the Star Jones he was again the moderator call him Doogie is requesting to go back up to Betty's diligence house once more. He says he'll see what he could do thank you Moira. Called this meeting of the mill poorest residents committee together to discuss a mysterious happening on the Island Line Messing's but I know Mrs Pierce that was a mysterious happening there one minute gone the next the whole don't get much more mysterious the night I want to talk about the disappearance of Betty started Betty starting as it would seem to fade if I can manage she commend you to 20 past 12 as she normally does and then meant approximately 20 minutes late she has. Been seen since and we have reason to believe she's been the victim of a strange phenomena What reason has anybody hear of the Bermuda Triangle now is that Barry Manilow lamps I knew had me forget the Bermuda Triangle as anybody cared a Picnic at Hanging Rock when a party of schoolchildren went out for a picnic on one in rock and disappear like mice but I must be us are not talking about us plates we're talking about baby stopped I tell you the other gonna have to once and for all it's not as extreme phenomena Oh dear gameplay are you going back up to the start in Tosa hall is poor and. I end up in back and forth to 3 times already this one did you notice anything untoward I could do is sleeping here and I think you could. Talk to the you know knew about Picnic at Hanging rule and the time that you got this is not well no it's not. No. The day trip on the map here is the one Betty would have taken after the peace here at the Rex Caffey last Friday another Hope I die in peace to get to another offered food already. Well so well. But no peace anybody at any point me when I'm through source therefore as proof of that one local strange phenomenon already quiet is someone to try and piece and forward that's true then they'll become victim of the seem strange phenomenon as Betty and the truth disappear What's a disappearance of 2 inhabitants no port in just over a week definitely only enough for the National brains nobody told me I was meant to disappear do you just know wake me up with this don't you understand this is a strange phenomenon what peed in the eye when they changed everything right in the people who would come here and not just from across the water no not just from Scotland then from all over the world. The difference this could make me. Well I emailed him well. Structured thoughts a bit and he writes my name will be the lead of you. And you'll be with a strange phenomenon. If not I mean to you disappear and maybe even visit. You up out of a strange gentleman and you know what I would like to demean with you many more that must be. Degenerate by. Outlast. Those in the next few years Typical they are sure to know when it was too good to be true my self-respect to screen spent a woman with the love itself to be fair and then there's this more what you want to . I think the Fed is all we all want to model. Irene was played by Lynn fed with Janet Brown as Moira undiagnosed also featuring Louis MacLeod as a battle. With Gabriel quickly as Bunty and Betty Dickey was played by much to stale old process and with the d.j. The producer was Lucy bacon and the series producer Kathy Smith. Yes hello. Daddy Meg good. And in the 2nd episode next week at the same time Irene wonders why her crooked brother has returned to the island. The comedy club on b.b.c. Radio 4 extra. Years Well I'm delighted that I've been joined in the studio by my guest this week the very fine comedian and writer Mr Stephen k. a Moss even Hello oh how i Pole I'm good I know is that when I wrote you'll name all together without gaps Yeah it's like a Greek island. A Jew No I've not heard that one before although what might be quite interesting is that an anagram of my name is the spokesman is a really yes it is just kind of like that's amazing a show you one called the spikes when they just changed it to Stephen came up because that was more acceptable I think it's because my parents at that point had 3 children and they needed some to come out and say What are you doing you've got to start now because I defy to uphold in my previous tools the spokesman because I was trying to make the point that I can't be a spokesman as comics we can't speak for anybody else pop must solve and if anything the only real original spokesman as steady as you know this is it let's just start off with you Steven like that where you started I mean you young man growing up in south London very large family your parents were originally from Nigeria that's true Tell us about how that was for you then I mean what was it a happy childhood were you a funny Kate growing up you know I it was a happy childhood my siblings and I the 1st set of us or really close in age really good already while we like to live off my parents what we do really hard we really saw my dad to be honest because he was like through all 4 jobs. I think was a security guard bus driver train driver if out when he laid out his clothes in the morning going to cost you a shot at the uniform that's just so weird and he will come. Quickly and then disappear again would be the classic oh if we're north or anything white china dad gets home back on the say what you got the time he'll So you want out and so for me back. Even my remit I know say if you come for a big family anyone out there was destined you know this is true your parents invariably will call you by the wrong night all the time yeah and I think it's Ok yeah they got state which. Eventually they'll get to know. All fullness when I'm sitting on the dinner table when mom points to me and goes Who is that kind of them despise me. Why do you do my food so you've got to do something to have your voice being heard in a large family yes I think that was the performance from. The comedy club Radio 4 extra every night from 10 til midnight if you can catch up with all of our interviews. Thank you. Now another episode of elephant in the room where Sarah Millican the entire panel try to work out who amongst them is the average Alice and conversely who is the irregular Irene. Well. I. Tell you I'm Sarah Millican and welcome to elephant in the room the show that finds out how in a world full of outliers even the average isn't average we surveyed the great British public on important contemporary issues situ so where did you sleep and how many of those teeth did you grow yourself. And from ones who didn't demand an instant restraining order we put all the data into a supercomputer Well the produces laptops indifference and from that we can extrapolate to is statistically the most normal nearly and can virtually who is the most eccentric Etna basically it's a sure way I get to pass comment about how weird everyone else is even though I knew anyone here who's made a spreadsheet to keep track of how many pets 3000 strangers have had. To make the rules apply Oh wait I did literally make the root of this is my show l b s consume women other than our panel. Questions from the survey there are no wrong answers here but there are a lot of peculiar answers because the poll was conducted in confidence we've changed some of the contributors names to protect the privacy of the gloriously odd . We did make the fake names up when we were very tired so if any of them bear resemblance to the names of real people living or dead I can assure you that it's purely coincidental but also if there are already real people out there with names like Harry sausages or Norene stopcock. Having won b.m.x. It. We read and read your 4 is probably the least of your troubles. Let's meet my guests for the seaven my 1st guest learned to tap dance in her thirty's alongside a class of 9 year olds which presumably means that in her sixty's should be learned to lap dance this welcome novelist psychotherapist and present Charles. When my next guest was born she was brought home from the hospital in a cardboard box I hope to meet told at the top like they did when I brought the school hamster home visit them comedian to see below what. My next guest went to get herself on the way to a gig so I had to perform Nicolas and in a dress quite right why should I want to be the audience who puts themselves thank God I'm a comedian Evelyn look. My final guest says he has never eaten a pepper army and that's not a euphemism because actor writer and comedian Toby Haydock. We call get into our questions we ask all of our guests to bring in an object that shows how average or maverick they really are let's see who's brought the top of classy cherries and who's got a top of class size from people called Cherry the clues you want to be brought in love this can you explain what it's a real. Boy is it a sticky ring that off on Blackpool it's like a Blue Fairy pompom with a baby sleeping head in a crash helmet attached to it work believe this but the shop I was in pole this wasn't the most bizarre thing. When a boy didn't think too much about it and then it's been in my dreams of a saint that. Was a nightmare. Thank you Evelyn. What if you brought in 1st I'm wearing what I brought in which is a pink towel sweat suit thing is what I brought and I brought it one night because I'm I'm very lonely. It's really comfortable and so I just put it on and I stroke myself was a thank you thank you very much Toby was you object please I to have brought a key fob but not from the bowels of Blackpool but it says a key fob the to shaped like the Tardis from Dr Who oh the children's program. I must find it's always been my but drama department of the Be received service commission and I should be one in 163 but it's not just the Tardis it's what they call these things are you a u.s.b. Stick that. You're making. I mean not only is it a u.s.b. Stick if you don't know which way up it goes and I'm afraid when you stick it in the right way then like terms on what you know you was the circumstances it was still talking about you were the biggest. Thank you Toby Annabel what if you put in 1st love when I put it no whether this was a sound we bag all that might be a sandwich bag yes a little pencil in hand I've also got my pack of you. Began to you know you know knows that this is a really good say I've always got it on the way on the back I've got this little school she tear and we go around the cafes in Brighton in the summer and we pay $3.00 games in each café there's a poll you that I don't know what you know in. This area because you were looking up the. The strategy game oh no I'm not interested. Was just things that are hard this week was going to be we should crack on. This question is about childhood on us we asked How old were you when you found out about the Tooth Fairy always kids today think of it we buy any Truth dot com. Ask our panelists I'm going to start with you I think it was when I had false teeth out of 5 have given you money for all fall. In the thing then she saved so many of our crew member of the chief because I think a lot of kids go through it my jaw and t. For growing quicker than my head. There in the school really really funny. And I knew it I knew it was because you know when you get your pictures still nap school yeah you know you take that fall back to see how many you want for a relative the didn't want to get any was and she just kept one fat head but didn't want to put anyone else through it and this is true this is what she did was on the mantel piece and she said that when she was Hoover Baden may eyes on the photo were following there was nothing in the room that says she have to lay flat. But I mean but still a re x. . So I think it was somewhere around that time in the robotic spree of how 7 said Ok Thank you Evelyn I would wear uniform did but the tooth fairy well so I'm from Sweden and we don't have a tooth fairy there we have I know. We have the fluoride on t.v. I was 6 and now that I say it out loud it's quite the Swedish we didn't have like a mythical little fairy but I have terrible teeth because my 2 front teeth are fake when I was 6 years old I fell and I caught myself with my 2 front teeth. So I would walk around with dentures but I would always take them out. But when I would eat or when I was at home as one day I was at McDonald's and I was eating and I took them out and then when we were ready to leave we left as I was walking down the street I was talking with my friend when he came to my turn to talk I opened my mouth and I just felt the wind. Was going to be cremated. And I realized I had thrown out my dentures the next day I was sad to run back and just get there oh and go join the Donald's been Yeah. I got an extra hamburger was. This really fair so you never knew about the Tooth Fairy I never knew about the train just the fluoride fair enough Yeah thank you Annabel Well I grew up in Scotland for the 1st 8 years of my life and we had a single The happy smile Cup and it was a badge I think that was all it was was a badge and I do remember getting sixpence from the 6 d. That was in black and white years ago from the Tooth Fairy which was not the until I went to boarding school when I was 8 and I don't have the tooth fairy think. It's tragic isn't it and said nobody could put it the code. Was that I have however ruined it for my daughter I ruined it for her when she was about 6 I had a very busy night and I was still in bed and the door open banged open and there's my daughter that she goes the Tooth Fairy forgot to come and I went Oh no I think she left me a note saying that she was looking for more money you don't have enough and she just what. Shall I go and get your handbag was. Told me how about you know well my mother has many qualities but subterfuge isn't one of them. She would she didn't sneak in to be the Tooth Fairy she sort of shattered any illusions I might buy I think clambering in rather loudly a disk. Who was the killer in the mass trapped in the identity of Kaiser Soze It saved by. The way. I did so with my very 1st 2 that I lost it in an apple I remember that I bit into an Apple my 2nd one my sister punched x. It really hurt so she stuck to punch out if you like it or then and didn't believe that she would do. That but the 1st one I can actually remember I mean the memory may be cheating because it's a long time ago now I mean I remember when Presto was new but there was a silhouette over me and then there was the 10 p. Then the next go oh that's not true that so so I must have been probably 7 or 8 thank you very much from that sketch So Matty. That was you did it make and that connection that it was a fun time to take that old photo of you in blue team was that we it yet Yeah Ok No I've got my son status nothing weird about that I feel that yeah that's fine why do keep him because I didn't know what the Tooth Fairy supposed to do with it I didn't know what I kept them I feel a bit send them to your account to send to your credit it wasn't that good how was the Marlowe I did he got the draw of. Was it different people have died was that I was to get the Grammys to Keith and put them in was I'm not a man I wish to pretend to be better that was like you everyone was going to assume be the most normal age to find out about the tooth fairy is 5 use to say to this image how people were quite suspicious of the Tooth Fairy from the start kids can be quite discern and sophisticated which is why I always left the tooth out side my room and insisted on payment by fax. Julian Julian Julian Julian said it was he must be. In the tooth fairy when she was 6 and found a fruit machine talking under her pillow. That was also the year she heard Santa had a gambling problem. Too in that rent Lucy was the most conventional Carol and Evelyn was the most radical groups you both get points and if I take a look at the school it's a really lovely set if different is that I'm sure will eventually mean something in the long run Thanks for a quick fire round now we have so save the what they 1st ever computer was the most popular at 22 percent was it expect to become you guess what the 9th most popular 1st computer was going to start with you don't hazard a guess the 9. And I'm strapped that you'll guess Yeah Ok Evelyn would you reckon that quite young fellow do you 310 not that many. Would you think the 9th most popular 1st computer. Linux Ok to even know what that is going to be would you reckon the Enigma machine. Is going to start with a basic. And a bell was it an affront star writer to. The fact. The next most popular 1st ever computer according to. Mark book. Nobody put on i Pad so I can confirm that our survey was not filled in by any total is. A bit sorry for people who've never known the joys of using dialup internet if you unplug a landline and you wait till after 6 so it'll be cheaper than you telling teenagers that these days and they'll say things like what to learn and please stop hanging around outside our school shouting about the olden days we're trying to revise. So in that round Lucy was the most generic. Any and Annabel with them was beatnik but you both get points Chris. Let's see what that's done to this cause and they're exactly the same but in a slightly different form. Let's move on to our next question we asked How old were you when you had your 1st drink and what was it we're going to start with Annabel. Yes I was I remember it very very well and mostly 14 and this is sort of really weird Pashto edition whereby your large drink out of your christening side so I do I can't help it I'm from that well you know what drink go if you're Christian and good when you're Christian you get a little silver christening Cup That's quite normal isn't it Ok. We can't. Even say mine was age 14 out of my christening cap and I had to sit and you know what it was side up but it was like to remember the Ready Brek had its member you got that good. Oh I got that. I got that go and I thought right and from then on I've drank quite a lot. My sister they did a really clever thing whereby she got her christening cup and went round drinks parties and used to empty everybody's glasses into it and then drink it or like sort of cocktail of all that yeah I know. That we are saying yes doesn't mean to go on like that thank you Toby Well I mean I'm not a drinker anymore for reasons I would outline if this were not a comedy show. To the many people who come up to a party now and expect the answer to the question so why don't you drink then to be I had so much fun and no dark nights of the soul at all. I think mine was site a Sunday like mine I'm not going to be listing and she's going to query this but she doesn't remember me mowing the lawn and I did. And I think I would have been less than 10. Did you do it because you emailed the Lord to after you know it was just you know the Lord Well it was very erratic 6 months norms are met Thank you very but Evelyn I want you well some hash tag not all Chinese people but some Chinese people lack the enzyme to break down wheat based alcohol and I'm one of them so I was 18 I think you know it was precept of probably on my birthday I'm just not a good drinker because I get the flush I get the Asian flush so I become very red and very hard in the face and I get drunk very quickly a feller's was a good good drink but it's a cheap drug is it true to their children I'm a very responsible drunk so usually I hit a certain point and a leave the party often without telling my friends and I did that once at my friend's birthday in April I went home and in order to sober up I decided to Hoover . And it was 2 am. And then when that was done I sat down and I went over my tax return. Because it was April and I thought yeah. You're right. About you I might not invite you to any path that meant that she could look at you took to. The face proper drink I had was I went to my Uncle Sal on the sweat tab for a pound an hour and I one of the old Saturday gals thought that I dragged can she said Do you want to go out for a drink. And we went to like. A whole scene outside and we queued up to go in and that's when she gave me the secret. So my granddad doesn't listen to this the radio was made through your teeth the way I I knew him in seeking and when the came out to contract I was trying to look about 43. So in that round our bell was the most typical Terence and Evelyn was the most abnormal they both got parts. A were another quick fire round now we asked us to be what if anything they used to collect when they were kids top of the pool were novelty rubbers which could be cute or just stood in. The end and know what kind of novelty robot they meant but can any of the panel guess what came 25th in the pool. To be able to start with you want to hazard a guess of what might be 25th on a list of things that people collected as kids yes your grandchildren's teeth. Good answer Annabel would you reckon I think it's a snow shakey things they snow globe snow globes they I think it's that because everyone buys them for their kids and they're all their grandchildren when they come by and then you end up with loads and you don't care why one smashed one and well it's like inside it's just the same cause it's clear. The snow made. Great and so the snow came out and the water all came out and I just kept it what a part of this thing to keep anyway when your Western the person that gave it to was one of them myself was imo when. I didn't would you think 25th John Mayer c.b.s. You think that's that's high up yes. Ok Here see what you think Mobbles. Interested. The 25th most popular collectible items in the with 11 people claiming to have collected them as kids it's carry a box. You may sneer but they're quids in that worldly. Was a clear piece at least if it's want to have help they can charge a couple of pounds and be a wise investment and will with Shay is so won that round Lucy was the most commonplace car with marbles and Evelyn was the most remarkable Renard with join me a cd that they both get points. Let's move on to our next question we asked the smashes on our city what they look for in a friend Evelyn patients because I'm very difficult. My friends are very nice very current and they all have humor I have a funny kind friend do they have a comment and stroke. Yeah only on invitation thank you Lizzy how about you Feather ones that are about the same height as me. To you. And I'm 5 foot one and how. Long people are taller than you then yeah and they actually did it with his link book and the friends who would be compressed did they feed me all this was I like small big breasted friends was in a written on sexual way and just I like the friends that move that you know he does like features was really numb sexual enough breast meat was the sheer balls by that I'm sorry it's not for the people exploded yourself was the sea so we had never told anybody that was me think of treating this like favorite take was that there now was breastfeed Jane it was shooting now I'm a was writing center and that was putting it into anything was good for a lot of women no no because you don't want to waste it do you think that it was good milk was really serious and a tradesmen came around and I thought he looked very pale I was like oh it looks a bit in the meat and that's really what it was because we drink milk in our house and I knew he wouldn't light your milk I just put him in the breast milk I was didn't 1st 2nd you know I would do it in the bath some of those to make his skin soft was drank it to make you fall and it was she thought it took 10 years of I was the 1st to choose look at your baby and think when the baby looks really you know was really pretty good. Falco to follow but. What qualities do you look for a friend on the way. Trun fine friends are going to feed me their breasts was. Requesting Number One can I tell you why I like people who is good is there were I cannot bear inconsistency in as big a deal come to that and then the day they leave me yeah I know so I really like people who've been through hell and of the likes other people's problems it doesn't like flakiness my problem psoriasis so I know. What it was. Missing all my life I think the quality I look for in the friend is probably coming food I do if you go to the kids in the pop who I didn't and then the people on the train I would like to have a heart a friend so that when I said the thing that popped into my head to say people who are listening to those headphones that have the music that doesn't go into your ears it goes into the carriage I mean they were called personal stereos so when I was so it's personal now they seem to I don't know the call but Pendolino Glastonbury's you to. Go to any version of whatever awful thing you are listening to and I so want what what I would like to do is go and sit next to these people and start reading the my book was the best of times it was the worst of times and then go What the hell are you doing in me go well this is what I've got to enjoy myself on the train so I thought you would like to hear it as well. Was I can't do that on my own However if I had the sort of huge person who's got the moves I would be able to administer my quit without fear of repercussions. Because we live the way you took. The thank you so much. The most popular and said was a sense of humor presumably so they laugh it off when you've slept with their partner. The Us Institute of Social and Economic Research saved young people about friendships last year and found the top attributes kids look for in a friend with humor honesty kindness and ability to see different points of view those were always the main things I look for in a frame. To along with loyalty agility good teeth shiny coat and a really wacky tail.
