The federal Liberal government is planning to intervene in Canada’s red-hot housing market with a new tax aimed at foreign owners of underused residential real estate and with additional efforts to increase the supply of affordable places to live.
Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland tabled a budget on Monday that proposes to put a countrywide tax in place on the value of “non-resident, non-Canadian owned residential real estate” that is deemed vacant or underused. If passed, the annual one-per-cent tax would take effect on Jan. 1, 2022.

A guy who was playing guitar to zero people on Twitch had the night of his life after crypto fanatics found him. Cobie told Ferguson to create a Twitter account and to get on the cryptocurrency app Blockfolio so people could donate to him. Then over the course of his performance, donations started rolling in to the musician. Ferguson was confused, but grateful, admitting he had “no idea what was going on.”

Apr 19, 2021
Dan + Shay scored big at the 2021 ACM Awards on Sunday night (April 18) by landing the Duo of the Year title, but their performance at the ceremony didn't go as planned.
During the Keith Urban and Mickey Guyton-hosted ceremony, the country duo's pre-taped performance of their latest hit, "Glad You Exist," aired during the broadcast from Nashville's famed Bluebird Café, but folks on Twitter started speculating whether the number was lip-synched because the audio and video weren't in sync with one another. However, the clip that was tweeted by the ACM Awards did not have the same lag as the broadcast and the pair took to Twitter to address the issue.

AP source: Guantanamo prisoners now getting COVID-19 vaccine

Card image cap

WASHINGTON — Prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre can begin getting the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as Monday, a senior defence official told The Associated Press, months after a plan to inoculate them was scuttled over outrage that many Americans weren’t eligible to receive the shots.
The new timing coincides with President Joe Biden’s deadline for states to make all adults in the U.S. eligible for coronavirus vaccines. Beginning Monday, anyone older than 18 in the country qualifies to sign up and get in a virtual line to be vaccinated.
The defence official said all 40 men held at the Navy base in Cuba will be offered the vaccination to comply with legal requirements regarding the treatment of prisoners and to help prevent COVID-19 from spreading. Strict quarantine procedures had already sharply curtailed activities at the base and halted legal proceedings for prisoners facing war crime trials, including the men charged in the Sept. 11, 2001, attack.

“They have absolutely safe seats,” Davis said.
However, the Justice Department is investigating whether Gaetz violated sex trafficking laws and had sex with a 17-year-old girl, and McCarthy has suggested he'll take action if Gaetz is indicted.
And a memo linked to Greene described a proposed America First Caucus hailing “Anglo-Saxon political traditions” and warning of immigration's threat to the U.S.'s “unique culture,” prompting McCarthy to denounce “nativist dog whistles.”
Gaetz has denied the accusations against him, which were described by people familiar with the investigation. He hasn't been charged with any crimes and says he is “absolutely not resigning."

The keen and practiced eye of ARRL member Ben Kuo, AI6YR, helped to guide rescuers to a hiker stranded on a mountainside on April 12. Hiker Rene Compean, 45, had spent the night in a remote region of the Angeles National Forest after getting in a tough spot. After a concerned friend reported Compean missing on Monday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department dispatched search-and-rescue (SAR) teams. Although amateur radio played no direct role in the rescue, Kuo cited his enthusiasm for technology and ham radio satellites and for Summits on the Air (

Majority of young white female libs have a diagnosed mental health condition, according to Pew Research
Andrew Stiles • April 19, 2021 5:30 pm
White liberals are significantly more likely than other racial and ideological groups to be diagnosed with a mental health condition, according to science.
The findings, from a Pew Research Center survey published in March 2020, were the subject of a recent Twitter thread that inspired an
Evie Magazinearticle on the possible "scientific correlation" between progressive ideas and mental illness.
According to the survey, white liberals of all ages were more likely to have been diagnosed with a mental health condition compared with their moderate and conservatives peers. The disparity was especially pronounced among young people aged 18-29, the most annoying demographic and the one with the worst opinions, generally speaking.

Fox Nation host says California representative one of several leftists hoping for division, 'race war'.
In Monday's edition of "Final Thoughts" on Fox Nation, Tomi Lahren called out Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., as a "dangerous" ideologue who is endorsing criminal behavior while going unpunished both in Congress and on social media.
Lahren said the 82-year-old Los Angeles lawmaker and chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee is "proudly, publicly and unapologetically inciting riots, violence, lawlessness and thuggery -- and her party, the mainstream media, collective Left and big tech henchmen don’t see a thing wrong with it."
She said that Waters is one of many left-wing lawmakers who seek to encourage public unrest while dividing the United States on racial and socioeconomic lines to increase government control upon a fractured population.

Instagram and the Queen
#DengkiKe became a trending hashtag on Twitter last night. It was in reference to Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah’s comment on Instagram.
The Queen shared that she had spent the afternoon in the kitchen with the palace cooks, to which a netizen asked if they were vaccinated too.
This was amid a report alleging the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had been gifted the unapproved Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine for use by royal circles, a claim Health Minister Dr Adham Baba dismissed.
The Queen’s response was: “Dengki Ke?” (Are you spiteful?). The comment went viral and she deactivated her Instagram account.

Judge in Chauvin Trial Calls Waters' Comments 'Abhorrent' – NBC New York

Minneapolis is on edge as it anticipates the outcome of Chauvin’s trial and reels from the death of 20-year-old Daunte Wrightin Brooklyn Center.
Judge Peter Cahill showed frustration with Waters' rhetoric shortly after the jury was dismissed Monday to begin deliberations. Chauvin's defense attorney had motioned for a mistrial in light of Waters' comments. Cahill denied the motion but called it “disrespectful to the rule of law and to the judicial branch" for elected officials to comment on the outcome of the case.
“Their failure to do so, I think, is abhorrent, he said. ”But I don’t think it has prejudiced us with additional material that would prejudice this jury. They have been told not to watch the news. I trust they are following those instructions."

ACLU and 70 other organizations ask DHS to stop using Clearview AI

More than 70 advocacy groups have called on the Department of Homeland Security to stop using Clearview AI's facial recognition software. In a letter addressed to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Susan Rice, the director of the White House's Domestic Policy Council, the American Civil Liberties Union, Electronic Frontier Foundation, OpenMedia and other organizations argue "the use of Clearview AI by federal immigration authorities has not been subject to sufficient oversight or transparency."
The letter points to a recent
BuzzFeed News report that found employees from 1,803 government bodies, including police departments and public schools, have been using the software without many of their bosses knowing about it. The company has given out free trials to individual employees at those organizations hoping that they'll advocate for their agency to sign up for it. Besides the lack of oversight, the letter points to issues like racial bias in facial recognition software and the fact Clearview built its database by scraping websites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. That's something that has gotten the startup in legal trouble with those companies.
