1st piece of fake news here's our political correspondent Ian Watson the conservatives want to portray Labor spending plans as unaffordable the chancellor Sajid Javid claims that the party would increase public spending by around a 3rd or more than a trillion pounds over 5 years but the conservatives calculations assume that all policies passed by Labor's a new conference are firm commitments in fact not all of them will make it into the manifesto which is yet to be published and labor see it will be fully costed the conservative document also doesn't examine Labor's revenue raising measures shadow chancellor John McDonald announced the conservatives claims as a mishmash of debunked estimates and bad baths a senior cleric overseeing Anglican parishes in north Devon has defended the decision of a clergyman there to ban yoga classes from a church hall Nigel Dilke says the vicar of St Mary's at Pilton ruled that elements of yoga practice continue patter with Christianity routine of Barnstable Mark butcher's who said individual parishes have the power to make their own decisions in such matters will be looking at a little later on this morning here with Belinda Dixon on b.b.c. Radio Devon. And there are 7 severe flood warnings meaning a potential threat to life doesn't place on the river dawn in South Yorkshire floodings also expect within 60 other areas including the river Trenton New York in Nottinghamshire lose park and a farmer in the area than Doncaster has been told his farm could flood later today . And flood defenses this village of dope involve which I've repeatedly asked environment and the people about restoring. Them but nobody seems to know responsibility that would be the. Banks in. The moment in the water out of the village so. I don't think the pinball flowed. B.b.c. Rated of news It's 7 o 4 thank you to. Radio. It is the story until 9 o'clock this morning and in just a few moments we'll be marking Remembrance Day with a former role Marine from limbs to. Radio 7 The Bangles of course eternal flame it's 7 eighth's. Such a poignant and powerful piece of music and it's of course a piece of music that will be played outside many churches and loyals across Devon today here is performed by Regimental Sergeant Major Major Tony Cox who's in charge of music for the force along with 2 colleagues he'll be on Exodus cathedral Green this morning Tony has played the last post for many years and says something about the pace that stops people in their tracks opinion it's the call itself and people realize words about it but it's not just the call it's the instrument because it's a fairly basic principle and just a true middle to the one and that it it produces something very basic in people with the tone itself and it produces it a spectacle if it uses a sort of feed in. That I don't know something something forgotten something lost. Leading the service on the green will be the bishop of the rights Reverend Roberts as well he led a Sunday service and he and his he recalling his own father a spitfire pilot in the 2nd World War He served in the battle of Monte Cassino in Italy. 55000 troops and 20000 German troops were killed 50 years on from the battle my father wanted to take me my mother and my sister to revisit where he'd served the ministry now rebuilt after its disastrous bombardment looks down from its hilltop position in the vast cemeteries below wandering through the British and Commonwealth cemetery and I lost track of my father and eventually I found him contemplating a group of graves of young British servicemen and asked him what he was doing I was just looking at the names of some of my friends he said. Some of the him this time of year is particularly special is former Royal Marine Simon Janes from limps and joins us now in the studio I thank you so much 1st for dropping by Simon. Can we start with your own experience of service and conflict where were you and when is it when so I've been rumoring for water all morning for 25 years and serve with in all the units in the high. Tech deployed obviously. As you'd expect along the way and. It is hard to sum up all my experiences of 25 years but I think if I had the phrase an adventure springs to mind and husbands roller coaster but it's been a really cool adventure for those 25 years you know where did that taking. Place some of the most sort of the most Yeah example you know at the end of doing 6 tours in the air and all of varying types operationally are served in Northern Ireland that's the 1st thing I did when I passed out. Trying to cross the world expects Afghanistan what was the big one for mayor did 3 tours of Arts and a few small weather wonderful things in between really but yeah the whole world but I've had a fair look at most of it's been cool and how is Remembrance Day marked when you are with in the service what happens it's you know I thought it was a real of from one extreme to the other really sometimes I've been in the middle of nowhere with that with a team nothing more maybe a hip flask might be produced from the bottom of a bargain with with top a toast absent friends and cry whom with always. Other times again being away the party might join us with maybe barley sing a hymn or to. Reflect for a moment and crack on and then the other end is open your passion from on your. Clothes policy about all those families will be there when my family the family fall and that's quite poignant and we would have a proper service you know probably the moral gun and reflect that way is it is it possible to explain to people who have not been in the service is just what it means professionally I suppose but also very much personally if you are in the forces for remember self Yeah it is a formal way of remembering with a nation and family and colleagues and friends. And that doesn't mean it makes you think about things and that's good but to be truthful remembrances self is a poor more ongoing thing from a personally. I do all the time you know sound. For. A smile a photo and you remember and it's not all the time but it just could be any time and it's not just one day of I do it you know and so 1000 question and it does I think and I think him I think it's from you that you said joining with other people people who are not in the service is how important is it for people who are in the service is that's civilians join in this process I think probably also in 2 ways with my family and also just the wider population everybody you know and to fill supported when you serving and afterwards means a lot it really does and. So you know it's quite a big deal actually the to know that there's when you darker moments you know whatever that might be to know that there's a support network for you. Is comforting and it makes a big difference actually so you know I don't see how important. That you talked about remembering constantly as it were. Easy it would be taking it too far to say that the society looking after service people and former service people it would itself could itself can itself be an act of remembrance Yeah I think so do you know. What I thought but it's not my this you know. And does society do enough to do that I suppose is that is the follow up question I think is such a personal thing. I wouldn't wouldn't over but all sides remember all off for me you know it's if there's something to remember if you have a memory and I mean something to you then Doris remember and see orbit one day or whatever it is I think is important to her plea but to know that. The whole nation doesn't happen everywhere in the world you know. It's interesting you know the commonwealth of course where poppies were doing the carrier Lisp in America but . It's all happened when I was pretty cool that we did an important as well here. Just as we finish Simon I said as you know I said how you know how long you said I I think I've been you know I am in the room arranged for 25 years yeah I had to correct yourself and put it in the past do you ever quite leave it you know that's such an interesting question because I think you can sort go through phases of leaving office is a physical act or had a soft packing some soft you know a logical goes back and you walk or drive out the gates and that's our you know it is a little bit also part of really to be honest this sort of comes around and it happens but then I think I think the from their own words you do start to look back and you keep in touch and maybe you lose such people and and it's an ongoing process of living probably forever really I don't know but I'm 6. I left early this year so you know it's pretty fresh for me really this will be my 1st remembrance. Pass no question where will you be. From here or shoot up to x. With which my marital home town. Turned. Up some friends and soon for a while we'll get together share memories from now I should probably go much my thoughts are with the March of the city after school. Combined force and when it's. Turned to a service for $200.00. And some for some Thanks ever so much for your time this morning coming in a way from from loosest an area. Really appreciated that's forma rumoring Simon James. It is b.b.c. Radio Devon Jackie Wayne has the latest headlines communities in Durban and across the country are preparing to commemorate the border in Remembrance Day services later this morning center to Britain was sealed off last evening by armed police searching for a man over what they describe as domestic related threats in the general election campaign Labor and the conservatives are clashing over spending plans the weather a cloudy start with patchy rain perhaps sleet or snow on high ground but quickly turning dry and bright with some reasonable spells of sunshine temperature 10 degrees and in sport there were mixed results for Devon sides in the f.a. Radio to happen 723 now around our over Churchill being used for yoga broke out this week as a bomb staple Anglican Church decided to ban a yoga class from its hole because they said Easton spirituality was not compatible with Christianity Well this left a teacher at Sukkot Kato somewhat baffled I think majority of the people maybe 95 percent of people coming to go for physical benefit also to relax to the stress but maybe the reason they choose yoga instead of pull out there may be they want to. Look for something else. Well here's what the Dean responsible for that part of Devon this month but has had to say about the Pilton parish church decision there's no national Church of England policy on Yoga being allowed to happen in church who are saying that the Church of him is always trying to be as welcome as possible to community groups but each individual parish makes its own decision about which groups allows use their whole or not and so it's going to vary from parish to parish I think it's a decision that has to be taken to local level and there's going to be a variety of views on that from parish to parish so some parishes would want say the roots of yoga there is a eastern spirituality which they wouldn't feel sits well with the Christian spiritual sheet that they are preaching about whereas other parishes might well say actually you know Greece much more about health benefits and community benefits and they wouldn't mind to talk about you know group using email whole Archdeacon Mark butches We're joined now by the Reverend Deborah Pathans who's the interfaith advisor for the exits the diocese Welcome thank you very much for joining us on b.b.c. Radio Devon this morning Deborah this comes against the backdrop of interfaith week what do you make of this issue saying yoga was not an appropriate activity for a church home. I mean I have sympathy with everybody involved in that situation I think we will never really understand another person so we step into that she's in walk around a bit and I did the recess need to comment on that particular situation in Mary's Pilton because I don't know that context to the past not his fault and I think there are always 2 sides to every story but I can a cave really want to be honest. She said that there is no national church or even a policy about whether you can take place in church who are not it does depend on the local context and I think what the dates say it can be used for and have since had to in my context I live in minister in tone s. And surrounding villages and. Plus it did take place in some areas church hall and have been successful enough for many is said some of the I think probably argue that this approach is actually likely to end unite people that Christianity should be about acceptance and tolerance. Yes And I think in the end I guess in any faith journeys to just situation the understanding and certainly in my role as an interfaith advisor I find is it's helpful just to look at other people's perspectives I think we don't understand people until we have these conversations and were able to learning a little bit more about that and I think what I what I really wanted to share with you this morning was a little of my own story and my parents were both Christian and raised me in that tradition but when my father was 40 he decided to take up. And this is in the 1970 s. And I think my mother thought it was a passing fad. But actually it wasn't and he enjoyed it and he benefited from it in fact Famous say. That he became a yoga teacher and he continued to teach that until he was 70 and say I think you know has a penis is really help me. To be more curious and to listen to difference to ask questions and and I understand the what you're saying is that in these individual choices Nessa individual authorities as you like you like assaulted the authorities to make those decisions but I suppose it sort of does beg the question of whether they should be because I'm imagining there are many practicing Christians that attending yoga classes who wouldn't say oh they're doing anything which goes against laugh face and I judge saying actually this is not appropriate that almost that passes a bit of a judgment on what they're doing doesn't it say I should be aired should it. Yes I will hear that and there will be many practicing Christians who do practice Yegor and and really benefit from that and will be many doctors who prescribe to help people in all sorts of situations to and but I think you know we have to make individual individual choice on this because I think it's very much an individual journey and we have to listen to it in a come. Where we are and that will depend I think on the people background it will depend on that their world view could depend on their upbringing and the experiences that they've had in their own life experiences and I think in any journey of a way it is an individual Czerny and it can only be done by each individual at any can be prescribed because I think I think people develop spiritual awakening in different ways in a different time there we must leave it we could talk about it all morning but sadly cars at us thank you very much for your time this morning thank you thank that is Reverend Deborah Parsons here on b.b.c. Radio deafen it is time now to pause for thought and this morning that's with Devon author Elizabeth d.c. Who's been focusing on the world food this week today on the final stage of our journey we're traveling over 9000 kilometers northeast woods from Brazil and South America to the center of Europe and what to many people is the gastronomical capital of the world Paris it's one of our favorite cities and I've visited it many times family and friends but on the occasion I'm thinking about today I was accompanied by several work colleagues from my client company in Brussels we come to France to audit a couple of their rule material suppliers one of whom is located in the outskirts of the capital. As the nominal leader of the team I'd share the closing meeting where we fed back to the company our comments on their operations and any requests we had for changes in the way they dealt with our materials I am by no means a linguist in fact quite the opposite but from learning how to order theater tickets or restaurant mails I normally relied on interpreters to speak for me in business trips in non English speaking countries but for some reason this time I insisted on attempting to hold the meeting without an interpreter I've been taking French lessons for a while and felt I needed to show what I'd learned I hate to think what our hosts thought of my terrible mangling of their language but they were very polite and kept smiling throughout the meeting took a lot longer than it would normally have since everyone had to speak very slowly so I didn't get lost but we persevered and eventually it was over. As we all heaved a collective sigh of relief one of the team suggested we walk down by the sane and take a look at Notre Dame before finding somewhere for supper it was a warm evening we had a pleasant walk little realizing that a few years later the iconic view would be changed forever by fire. And when we arrived at the restaurant the appetizer we were we were presented with was live oysters I knew what to do in theory but I've never eaten them before and normally I'm quite cautious with new food but I reckoned if I could successfully chair a meeting in Paris in French I could certainly master the art of eating oysters and I did and they were delicious. Said glad to hear it is b.b.c.
