50 elected seats 385 were won by pro-democracy candidates only 59 of the contested seats were won by probation candidates the government of China I wish them the poor the actual results claimed 5 months a protest for what it termed seriously disrupting the election process and everyone wants to return to a normal life violence won't move things forward that was the message in reaction from Hong Kong's chief executive Kerry lamb and she she spoke after the election results had become fairly obvious it's seen as a huge rejection of Muslims leadership a huge source support for the protesters Muslim said she was aware many voters used the election to express their own happiness about the government's handling of months of unrest we will wear off the large number of voters coming out to cost it felt perhaps not only to select a preferred candidate to sit on the district council but also to express a view on many issues in society including deficiencies in governance including unhappiness with the time taken to deal with the current unstable environment and of course 2 and found us so we will seriously reflect on these views expressed to us and in proof on the governance in the field of our work . Well despite the massive turnout as we said earlier the government of China didn't really report the results and just called it really blame the whole thing on the protests are saying that cause serious disruption to the elections and the government warned against any further protests for you writes from Hong Kong for the Guardian Hello Verna. So what's the atmosphere or are most people pretty happy about this. They feel pretty elated over the landslide victory of their pro-democracy politicians and I feel that people are happy that their discontent have been expressed in the quantifiable way because before that Hong Kong Leader Kerry Lam their. Silence majority are supporting the government in suppressing violent protests while it is true that most people here I've spoken to are against violent expression part so they feel that the government should respond to that people in their political demands and they feel that. The ultimate goal of political democratic reform if the ultimate goal even if they disagree with Marlon protests so the mood is quite happy at the moment but on the other hand I mean Kerry land this morning. Already rule out that thing any more demands from the protesters so and this trick council election or those that landslide victory. Have very little very little political power so. That's what I want to show you what are the local control. Well I mean pretty much the council in the u.k. They have relatively small budget and they have a mandate restricted to local issues such as how the parts are run service of waste collection that sort of thing though really is more symbolic I mean that the people at this time. Are their own thing or. To show their political stance. Rather. If it comes to or. That they probably would have voted for the probe aging. Politician because they tend to be well funded well connected and really this time people are not voting for the 3rd and they really are voting for a bit of political symbolism political symbolism over how many protesters are still stuck in the Hong Kong Pauli how many people are still inside. We don't know for sure but probably. A dozen or 23000. We don't know for sure but. There are. Some of the pro-democracy lawmakers have been able to go in to try to persuade them to come out some are. Christian. Were able to go in. And they stayed situation inside the protesters who are still stuck there they have very afraid to come out because previously their police have repeatedly that whoever come out we were immediately arrest them on riot charges and of course the really encourage people to want to come out and now the police have somewhat tone to say that we were not immediately arrest people we will register their id and investigate later but of course the people remain the remaining people who have been emotionally distraught traumatized the hygiene conditions are very bad and I even heard that some of them are you know self harming so not exactly reassuring to hear that they will be investigated when they come out so if there is a pretty desperate situation. How about the Chinese reporters are we right to say the Chinese media is not really reporting the result of versa works. No I mean the media in China state media and you know run by yes the Communist Party though they have stopped short of reporting the landslide victory but this no repeaters messages that. The polls have closed in Hong Kong and. We resist foreign meddling the foreign minister foreign ministry spokesman said that the most urgent task for Hong Kong at the moment is to control the chaos to stop the violence and the government if unswervingly determine if they Guard National Guard front t.v. And to oppose any interference in Hong Kong or by external force that. Have any impact on car alarm at all well I think the. Yes I mean because she's answerable to Beijing and not to Hong Kong both so our issue would do whatever is right in her Beijing Boston. And but I mean to me as a local result going to go into effect the way that she has to present herself to them. Well you would think that she should respond to those people but on one hand she said she will listen humbly to the views of the public and also she this morning she said that she was seriously reflect on the election results but the issue ruled out except seeing any more demand from the protest the 1st seems like she is saying that she will listen she's not going to take any action to meet the demands of the protest and under the situation I fear that the will carry on with their demonstrations and the violent protests for her thank you very much indeed for being with us. Thank you as we've been hearing in the news and police have been searching for a missing British tourist who discovered a body 25 year old us Lion King was last seen in the early hours of Saturday morning at a campground in Victoria Well let's find out all about this now from Phil Marsar Hello Phil yes morning to you wrote in morning well tell us about what we know about Mr King. Well we know from social media he was an illustrator based in Brighton who had only been Australia we understand for a couple of weeks over the weekend he was camping with 4 British friends at a place called the old coach road camping grounds this is pretty close to the 12 Apostles the popular tourist sites on Victoria's Great Ocean Road now the Great Ocean Road is a very popular place to be especially at this time of the year it stretches for 150 miles along the Victorian Coast and what we know is that as Lynn King was drinking with friends very late saw very very late on Saturday very late on Friday or very early on Saturday morning we understand he suffered a suspected seizure hitting his head and his friends have told Australian police that this young British man then ran in the darkness into bush land prompting a large scale search and that's the last time we know of that anyone saw as linking wrong running into the bush land and his companions did tell investigators rod that this was very erratic behavior by Azlan King and it was completely out of character . So the more circumstances were as the body discovered on March the police say. Well emergency crews and volunteers have been scouring very thick vegetation in Rocky clip top cliff tops as well as waterways you have to remember rolled the lie of the land near this camp site it near the open ocean and the beaches it's also very very dense bush land as well and all Thora to say that the body of a man they found was discovered in a creek less than a mile from where as Lynn King was camping with his friends now this body has yet to be formally identified and now a coroner will be prepared for the report will be prepared for the Victorian coroner We understand that members of Mr King's family are traveling from Britain to Australia a formal identified identification will take place sooner rather than later you'd imagine but safe to say the authorities in the state of Victoria do believe that those remains that of the missing British man he went missing more than 4 days ago in some pretty unforgiving to rain there were reports that that area is inhabited by very dangerous Thai get snakes so we'll have to wait and see what the investigation but I think it's safe to say world that this is of course a very tragic and a mysterious case we don't know exactly what prompted Azlan Qin King to run off into the darkness into an area of bush land he wasn't familiar with we may never know but as the investigation continues here in Australia we must wait to of course for that formal identification to be carried out and. The police are staying in close contact with the friends. Apparently the British friends certainly in the 1st phase of the search for 25 year old as Lynn they were very much involved in that search on the ground is always the case here in Australia much of the legwork in terms of searching that very harsh and unforgiving often impenetrable terrain is done by volunteers we were hearing stories of volunteers being bussed in from the nearby city of July which is to the west of Melbourne there was a police helicopter there with sniffer dogs there were police officers on motorcycles others on horseback and many many boots on the ground you and I rode have discussed in recent times the firefighting efforts around Australia much of the effort is done by volunteers the search for As and King was also boosted by the time the energy the concern of those volunteers backed up by professionals such as the police and wildlife ranges so this was an exhaustive search spanning many many days very difficult terrain and the police believe that the searches ended in a catastrophic and tragic circumstances they do believe that the body does belong to the missing Britain but a formal identification as we say still has to be carried out Phil thank you very much well in Georgia. There is an ongoing protest against the government and several 1000 people took part in the latest one as we'll hear no from Dmitri. Good morning Rod so it's never ever boring in our neck of the woods so. I woke up this morning and I was thinking Gosh all those people who kind of pledged to stay outside parliament here in the capital Tbilisi So what happened was yesterday there were thousands of people marching towards the parliament. And it's all kind of ongoing It all started on the 14th of November when Parliament here in Georgia which is dominated by the governing party which is called the Georgian Dream they failed to pass a law on electoral reform which the chairman of this party promised to introduce back in the summer during mass anti-government protests in June and July so the government promised they said All right we will move to proportional representation from 2020 elections and we will pass such legislation so when it came to voting on the 14th of November. Parliament failed to do so and that sparked protests of people they've been protesting for 12 days now not not so not not such a large protest every day but on weekends it's been pretty big and what people are saying is that this saying they feel kind of deceived because the government promised this legislation and and the reason why people want it is because they say that if this electoral reform is introduced that would ensure that there's more kind of democratic representation in parliament because so far as I said it's been dominated by this party called the Georgian Dream but the 2nd point is that there's a lot of anger towards the chairman of this party Georgia dream he's Georgia's richest man. He's a billionaire and his name is busy they vanish really so what these protesters are saying is that he has accumulated too much power he's kind of this unofficial ruler of Georgia he is officially the chairman of the ruling party but he's also somebody who you know appoints a prime minister is his kind of closest allies are in key government positions and people are just saying you know we don't want this anymore we don't want this billionaire to run Georgia as his private business and therefore please change the legislation so that we have more democratic representation in Parliament so going back to people who were protesting yesterday some of them decided to stay and picket all the entrances to parliament they. They've been waiting for Tuesday morning which is today and today what they're planning to do is they want to prevent this pro-government M.P.'s from entering the building. So obviously the people want. They want change the big way the perp they're prepared presumably further the kind of splintering of parties that might result from proportional representation but that at least I suppose would make it democratic in their view they they they feel the moment but that they're not really getting the voice heard. That's right all people feel the like now is the moment to act. Because the elections are coming next year this ruling party has been in charge since 2012 but what it also underlines Rod Just as you you know noted now is that somehow the society is split and this polarization is something that is very present in Georgia between the main kind of opposition parties and this pro-government party is now what the government is saying is that they always blame the opposition for everything even for their failure to pass this law they kind of accuse the opposition and they're calling them a destructive force we've heard from High senior government official saying on Monday once again send look this issue is closed we are not going back to discussions about this electoral reform so unfortunately that is kind of fueling tensions here and this still a year before the elections but that's that's the picture now. The sons of George and Gore are getting a picture of George they didn't get ready but else before that this is quite controversial That's right that's why I was saying it's never boring here because you know we just think oh this is the story and something else happened so earlier this month. The far right far right nationalists that president of course in Georgia as well they they were protesting they actually kind of scene changed all the main cinemas in the capital Tbilisi and in other parts of the country they were protesting against the film it was the opening night. Film is an award winning film by a Swedish Georgian film director whose name is live on Aiken and the film is called And Then we danced it is about. It's a gay life story for the 1st time in Georgia in this very conservative homophobic country. This theme is being explored on the big screen but the film is not just about a love story it's about it's about what's happening in Georgia and how controversial it is how difficult it is to be if you don't fit. You know the standard kind of heterosexual. Image And so what what what what was happening outside cinemas was that what I saw was about 500 people really aggressive people they were insulting cinema go is there was very heavy police presence police had to protect entrant at the entrance to the cinema and and these protesters were kind of insulting swearing at those who were trying to get in and I had to kind of remind myself oh my God it's just people one. Going to get into the cinema and they being subject to so much kind of insult and threats so that film was showing in Georgian cinemas for 3 days and all 3 days there were protests but it's not it's not wrote something new you know when it comes to critique you righteous Arabs I'm sure is not. Here and I thank you very much for telling us about well we're probably return to this topic on a later occasion many thanks indeed. It's 27 minutes past 4. On digital b.b.c.
