You single from George Michael is coming Radio Devon This is Mike Rogers Rosie try cameras with me this way we were talking the whole way for about about Christmas because you haven't you've arrived as a guest into b.b.c. Radio Devon and the festivities Oh it's absolutely incredible and head there's just night there's no you have to live or to mention it sometimes it's more I'm furious about I'm furious a nothing but I got a jumper so we're making up for everyone I'm trying to yeah and we talk about mince pies about roses never had a woman's pie which is yeah yeah a friend of mine said to media day why haven't you you know you know people think that rubbish because you know one hall I should I get the point now I do I think there was good cause they called I'll eat I'm always away but I'm in a common even have try and with with some fresh cream on the Saudis what I've been told You sound like a connoisseur of it of things festive whenever anything Christmas Day you come to me for Christmas food for Christmas clothes decorations movies I'm on almost every jingle all the way Arnold Schwarzenegger I haven't seen it no I have watched the greatest Christmas. Getting to Christmas films recently Ok so I'm going to take that home there are so many to watch but I'm telling you jingle all the way with Arnold Schwarzenegger and you can buy it for like 3 pounds on d.v.d. In Tesco Boro Oh yes we're here with Rosie I haven't even explained he was doing I was just having a general chat Why don't you the high streets are getting busier for the usual mad dash present shop I think I think as of the 1st week of December I guess it gets. The native makers have been out about again it's been a big weekend so yeah back at the Royal William yard implements offering local makers a creative platform to display and sell their work to shoppers who are looking for that special something you can't find anywhere else because it's this time if you hit the high street right and you don't know what you're going to get Sure yeah people come to you it was the festival this weekend or when your business your the festival founder Yeah tell me about it so the atmosphere this weekend of you probably in the Christmas mood now I'm fairly Christmas on Christmas day out actually I need a little break or you can hear feeling a little bit cold you know I need to hike back up the Christmas vibes. If that. Yes So we were studios. And native makers it is a platform like you say for creative entrepreneurs who live in the Southwest who make products locally so we're high end craft I'd say definitely not high street so we're offering shoppers an opportunity to buy something that isn't going to be in everyone's talking yes it's a different everyone when you're doing Christmas shopping you always want to get something different you don't want to get the usual bits and pieces you want saying and with it with a lot of this stuff it's sustainable as well Grantley Exactly and you know you're supporting the local economy as well in supporting people to you know live the dream I guess and work for themselves so I just worked out the numbers actually And over the weekend. The great people of Plymouth invested just over 30000 pounds in local people so I think that's absolutely. So there's something for everyone there I guess and we had low it was great we had loads of kids coming along we do lots of kids crafting say we had I think it was wooden spoon Christmas tree fairies this weekend so I just you can just picture the source credible and it really does get you feeling Christmassy because sometimes in the shop can get a little bit tiresome if you want I guess it's about community isn't it Christmas is about friends and relationships family showing people that you love spending time with loved ones and going going to going to the High Street isn't going to evoke those feelings so why is it so important to support local crafts Why is why is it something we should all be looking at I think personally for me I mean the reason I started native makers was because I was living down here in the Southwest I was a new creative graduate I wanted to work for myself but the only opportunity is really for me to sell my work upcountry you know I had to head up to London or I was I was essentially leaving Plymouth to go and promote myself and it just felt it just felt wrong and there's so many people lately I think we had. Just around 70 makers this weekend and exhibiting all over to the southwest and if it wasn't for events like native makers and visitors we had he was supporting us and those people would would leave their take there to support themselves so it's so important for us to you know show that where we want these people to stick around and we want to create a value individuality to our local community particularly at Christmas is really a really important time for independent source things were people with a local offering. Well we have a really wide range I mean native make it isn't just fair and sort of craft as I really don't like that word crafters so to speak so we have people who offer all kinds of creative services I guess so and we had a draft record. Store from top nasty had a pop up record shop that people who go in have a little rummage through what they had on offer we had a local painter Emma Carlisle He had come along with a lot of the originals that people could have a look at and she doesn't often sell impasse and so that's quite special and then we have things like stationery fashion in ceramics all kinds of beautiful products of come from really local and from North Devon. Dorset border and we welcome lots of really amazing creatives What is your personally your favorite material is your view of the having this outside you must have some favorites I mean I'm a textile designer actually by trade and I guess I've got I voiced a love for textiles but the real ceramics and I just love the tactile quality there and the fight I guess of what's around it can offer us in the usefulness of the product and yeah I do love it and obviously you're in the Christmas spirit now did you find that everyone coming along to the William Yardley Yes we can just really up to the Christmas you know what people they're wearing Christmas yeah tinsel scarves they were ready Christmas jumpers he got them I held a Christmas market last year yeah and we had lots of crafty thing and that's what really kicks off Christmas for you in the spirit I don't know what with Christmas films we talk about some of those classic Christmas romantic films when they go to a market or a craft fair or something like that that really is kind of like what everyone wants to do it Chris Yeah yeah they do they want to get involved they want to meet the community and yeah get festive together and this is the 5th year. So I've been running it since 2014 so yeah I guess that's out right he's. 60 I think yeah yeah yeah we've done a few events within that So next Christmas will be at 10. Event so maybe we should do some sort of spectacular for sure you got to celebrate 10 attend events spectacular Yeah I'd like to I presume each one gets bigger and better more Christmassy and more Crofter Yeah yeah it's kind of it's whiles I guess and you know we the audience crazy visitor numbers Gras and yes fab Well good luck with the next year thank you congratulations on making so much money for the local little area the local economy is a burden it's great yet it's great to support and what it's all about thank you so much for coming on cue when you get home Christmas mince pie jingle all the way with. Seems on the fat 12 o'clock without a doubt I mean was an 1121 going by May Day get out on yeah government was jumper only are not your Tramp Oh not quite yet but I think yeah this weekend I'm going to dedicate some time know today. Out of fear that you might have the small inning and in the promo just . The incredible story about mattresses being stolen from hotels it's cream isn't it this is a study that's been done 5 star hotels generally the studies been done to see what's next from hotels apart from the obvious people are always making the you know shampoos and conditioners the shower gels people steal towels which bathrobes It's like they're not new it's you stealing stuff that's being born and used by thousands of other people and mattresses 5 star hotels are 8 times more likely to have their mattresses stolen than for starters is the really upmarket ones just because it's not market it's got a fancy mattress doesn't mean that mattress isn't full of bed bugs and nasty creepy crawlies I mean why why why you said to me Hey Matt let me take away your mattress and I will give you this mattress from a 5 star hotel No I don't want used grim mattress and God knows what's happened on luxury bathroom fittings have been going missing basically criminal organizations have been stealing stuff so you don't feel so bad now when you take a little thing of shower gel with you when you see. Death and travel news you still hide it thank you I know what I want to be in this tiny little thing and shower gel I'm taking. B.b.c. Radio Devon. Budget. So if you're not feeling quite that festive enough yet and you think you need something I something to get me in that Christmas email to give me some Christmas vibes some live music you might want to check out this week details of which coming up in He. Was Billy Joel and River of Dreams b.b.c. Radio Devon This is Matt Rogers Hello welcome to Monday at the for May Day going to play a Christmas song from 1908 the is really nothing to do a Christmas but because it came out Christmas time and it sounds quite festive Evans light yet get on your list and I was in the next 10 minutes 1st of all a legendary violinist an x. Member of folk rock band Steel I Spy and Peter Knight has joined forces with leading. X. Bello had member John spies and together they're creating a folk jewel to be reckoned with playing some not so familiar chains and Carol's Linton town hole on the 14th of December so something to get you well in the mood for Christmas Pete is on the line right now morning Page So what can we expect. What we expect to become a sea of this this we can listen to how can you expect more you can expect to musician. Really enjoying playing together squeezy John spies is an absolutely fantastic player and what we do is we take traditional chooser and in particular to the some festive some festive Jones and songs as well and we sort of mix it up a little bit we do quite a bit of improvised lation during the cakes without losing the sale of the original show that's very creative very rich musically and we're out of the time mazing Now I was talking earlier about things like Christmas markets that get you in the mood for the festive season to the gigs you do this time of year did they get you really feeling do you sort of go into them thinking I'm the Christmas spirit and then by the end you're just thinking yes where is Santa I need him now. Well there's some choir live I've always loved Christmas anyway whether I'm playing music or not there's something traditional It comes from being a kid business calls and having a nice time with your parents and stockings and all that sort of stuff although when you grow up you know it's also a different what it is bringing people together and we live in my wife and I live in France and we're going to be spending Christmas with a few friends some friends some English and we're gathering Christmas Day and really looking forward to it is it's about it's about getting some time with people you love people you don't see very often but something it just brings everyone together you got Have you got in your hand now do you have any decorations up at home or do you decorate when you get back into From what we have to have to close the house down when we come out because if it's cold or later drying the system with or sort of the thing so as soon as we get back I go up into the loft I turn the water on the electricity 'd I check everything in the House and the bulbs and make sure everything's alright and then we get the boxes of Christmas decorations out I walk a few yards down the road and like a Christmas tree in the woods growing randomly and and we stick it up and decorate it like the stars and happy Christmas not that. You know that that 30 seconds that you started off making me think got it I want to emigrate you're going to mess around with Walter and all of this off and then you made it sound so beautiful at the end where you don't cut your entry down what you know what is lovely I mean there are certain sayings enjoyable and there's always a downside and it's a little bit lighter anywhere in some ways because it is hard work with all the driving with the travel around the list these Joes are they were driving expenditures of the big bankers and moon squeezy John but you can't have the gate without it. If just that's that's all part of the deal when it comes to Christmas music because your this is your business this is your industry what is your favorite from a personal point of view and you can't say any of your own your favorite Christmas song of all time what would it be. All Tasha real tough one there's one that John are playing the Sarah let's call it the towel. Just appears a fortune and it reminds me a little bit of a sort of a blues melody so we introduce a little sort of just that hint of blues into the into the so it's beautiful lovely plaintive melody it's not your normal one that lots of people say well she will die with that you know with. Class a little chilly and I thought I was thinking is just going to say shaken Stevens in a bit Now you went straight into. This it's Saturday isn't Saturday night Linson town whole night and Spa is Friday Friday actually playing the Kings cuz well. So you're covering Devon like no one else Friday evening Friday the 13th are you not superstitious I know that because that's fine if I was fine for it is I think a great day because so many people stay in so it is nice to go out and about and not be so crazy but actually this Friday night get to King's Castle parish church see the guys and then Linton town hole on Saturday for anyone that has never been 24 gigs before anything in particular they should be looking out for what connects specked. Well of our size son John all of us run together at a festival called Focus Festival which is a super festival and our blessed a lawyer Joel Bello headed for the collapsed I think and the John and
