Radio Devon now on our way to wait 101834 text one trip or 3 starting your message with the Red Devil or email Janet that's b.b.c. Dog cage at t.k. Boris Johnson has wanted decisive election victory for the conservatives off to 6 weeks of campaigning it was a landslide with heavy losses for the biggest conservative win since Margaret such a in 1987 the is thick with statistics and numbers at the moment which is a rather befuddling experience for me because you know I'm not very good at them before Jim. How to Willis the doctoral researcher in politics x. University is with us to help her I want to talk about the Devon figures specifically here so what are the most exciting figures from your point of view or the most surprising figures that happened in Devon because with the color map is the same as in there yes yeah absolutely in. There was another conservative m.p. Who's new that was and let me know I think yeah after it was previously held by an independent for a while so instead of sort of keeping with the incumbent independent they have stayed with party loyalty into their own to some way to the Lib Dems I think didn't yes yeah I'm getting in and you haven't Yeah. Yeah my apologies but yes so they they stayed with. Yeah with their party colors rather than sort of with a local m.p. That's been working for them for a while Ok So that was interesting in in Devon now as I said there I think every conservative m.p. Has seen a rise in their. Figures in their majorities exact one . Is that right yes I believe so yeah and I think that follows sort of the national trend of everybody we've got quite a conservative stronghold down here anyway but you know maybe some of the Liberal Democrat voters are on very remain and would have gone over to the conservatives and that's why we see that increase in vote share Ok We're going to come back to you again in a minute and I do want to focus on these these Devon statistics but we're going to go to Downing Street now with our political correspondent Cathy Alicia thanks for joining us today is this a political earthquake. Here I mean just look at some of the numbers here we've got Boris Johnson with 364 seats we've got one seat left to declare but that means a majority of about 78. And Labor have gone from 243 seats in the last parliament to 203 best time around and just give you a little bit of context from that if you look at 983 when Michael Foot was Labor leader that was widely seen as one of Labor's worst performances in modern history and Labor had $209.00 seats so they've even done worse than that and of course for the Liberal Democrats it's been a very bad night as well because they're going to end up with 11 possibly 12 seats and that's what they had in the 2017 argument although they ended the Parliament with more because of the defectors that they picked up along the way but they've actually gone back to where they were previously with 12 seats and of course they've lost their leader unsurprisingly it sounds quite busy in Downing Street what's happening at the moment you've got a helicopter above you I have yes it's all happening here so I am looking at a bank of photographers and reporters and press people standing in Downing Street standing on scaffolding in Downing Street and a fine collection of woolly hats and feeling the cold a bit I think we are all standing near the Christmas tree in the front door outside Number 10 Johnson has just left and that's why you can still hear the helicopters above us so he's got in his car and he's gone off to Buckingham Palace for his traditional audience with the queen and that's where he says this is a result of the election on the I'd like to form a government so we're expecting him to be in with the queen for a hugely long time the sort of official audiences that generally take very long and then he'll come back here to Downing Street but we're not expecting him to stop and talk to reporters at that point we think he'll go back inside number 10 and then come out into Downing Street a bit later this afternoon and perhaps a few more was because he spoke this morning to say yes did did Michael go what do you think was the break straight for the Conservatives and the fact that Labor fell flat was it this get Bracks it done that simple endlessly repeated message. Well of course pundits and analysts and academics will spend months if you want longer trying to work out exactly what works. What didn't but yeah I mean superficially on the face of it it would seem to be that Boris Johnson just went out there with a really simple message let's get breaks it done and we heard it until we were blue in the face or blue in the years away and whatever you want to put it on the bat was what we heard from him but also Jericho when life was a bit more complicated there is some suggestion that he wasn't very popular on the doorstep that people just perhaps didn't like him but I think Labor's position on Breck's it was more complicated it was a bit more new wants to that was more difficult and then there was this vast array of policies that Labor put out over the course of the election campaign everything from renationalisation railways to trying to help the waspy women with their pensions to name but 2 and there was a whole array of these and perhaps it was just a bit confusing and people were maybe worried about you know how we stood for policies were going to happen and what different policies were across most importantly how they were going to be paid for. What reactions are we getting to the results he's been saying what this morning. When obviously you know there is still really soaking in and particularly for the Lib Dems who have you know really suffered quite a big loss with their leader going here but we have had some reaction so we had Norman Baker for example he was a lip Demme m.p. Up in Norfolk and he stood down at the last till the election that we've just had but his seat has now gone to the Tories and he says that he thinks the Lib Dems very extreme message of we were revoked altogether might have another referendum if we was on the government we'd just simply get rid of it we think that was to extreme an answer to that you know to put forward to people and then we've had on the labor side Margaret Hodge veteran Labor m.p. Saying we are now a nasty party which will remember as being the phrase a truism a used about Tories at one point. And then I'll just read you this because it really struck me as being quite a brutal assessment of it is from Ruth's me for now she was one of the Labor M.P.'s on staff in Stoke on Trent not labor used to happen 3 of the Stoke on Trent state is lost 2 of them and read. Smith is one of those He's lost her place in Parliament and she says this is devastating this is seismic this is the end for me this is about whether the Labor Party has any right to exist and whether we have anything left to say so from her perspective you know this really is it and it is of course going to be the end of the Korean era because the Labor Party has now lost 4 general elections on the trot and 2 of those on the journey call this leadership Lisa thank you very much for joining us as McAfee in a very busy Downing Street and surprisingly we've got Hanna Willis in the studio for a few minutes more doctoral researcher at Exeter University we were talking about the Devon numbers Hanna and the fact that most of the Tory All except one of the the Tory M.P.'s their majorities have gone up we've still got Luke Paul out for Labor in Plymouth Devon and some poor Ben Bradshaw for Labor in Exeter but their majorities have gone down he has taken those votes yes probably the Liberal Democrats and maybe some conservatives as well in Plymouth and didn't I think Ann Widdecombe helped get reelected by sort of splitting the conservative vote. She didn't get as much as we thought she did or was going to rather only around 5.5 percent of the vote so that wouldn't have swung it to the conservatives favor if she had stood but it still sort of took quite a lot of the vote share from them Ok Well thank you for I'm saying great not to be political before somebody picks me up on that but I'm so glad you've been here with the numbers thank you so much for joining us good talking to you that's Hannah Well this is a doctoral research at the university with a few of those numbers more of you text Martin I can't turn says I'm feeling try out for the best thing that could happen to our beautiful country I'm not a total surprise by the majority in the Conservatives favor Labor would end up bankrupt the country says much Lib Dems lost their strong campaign to counsel Liberal Democrats is nothing democratic about. He said The people spoke the people on words and upwards miking Chadli said I got what I wanted I voted to remain and remain at home I did my fight why foetid for steak and steak we had for dinner results or round and lean Xmas as I normally vote Lib Dems but I also voted to leave Europe I've no choice but to vote Conservative I know it would take 10 to 20 years until we've seen the benefits but I can remember when Ted Heath took us into Europe and slowly a lot of businesses had to shut down because they didn't come up to the regulations 08810134 we're asking simply today did you get what you want let's talk to John in Exeter How about you John Ben Bradshaw labor and welfare exits are returned I think he's Devon 2nd longest serving m.p. Came to the office in 1997 but a little bit of a reduced majority there. War. We got to get John in a better line I can't really hear what he's saying there let's talk to Graeme in bit of for Tiger am. How did you get what you wanted. In the sky. Right let me have a look at your seat on the the little results find in here so Geoffrey Cox reelected again for Devon North Devon or Utah Ridge. North Devon right Ok let's have a little look at the figures that. What was the message that wrong tree with you that helped you to to well maybe didn't help you just to decide but what were you hearing are you. Jeremy Colvin. I think I could never have. Been to rallies so much that when he spoke against us. Still going over the last hour which is a host families. You know when the country so that he would never think. The Dems come up and they were saying just pass. That ocean that's what we're going to say that didn't happen. Norris. Died before then. Dumb things. Thousands of. The start to change stuff that people said he couldn't get the green . He stumbled he said. But I was lucky enough to meet a service. Representative in one of the questions are companies are but the last chance of doing the same even if they. You know I can see it working. If they don't if they don't I'll be burned somewhere else and when it comes up again. Ever getting. To it what I found you'll constituency sassy Devon Weston Tory General Mills definitely is Geoffrey Carr $35900.00 and for His face was up pretty healthy 3.6 percent the next one was David Chalmers in the Liberal Democrat 10000 thanks a big difference in a very very clear win than what you see she now Boris Johnson did refer to this morning about sort of reuniting the country it is very split isn't it might not be quite where you all but the country as a whole is. Timelessness I've got a lot of friends devoted and I know. Tommy very proud. There were in his. Car The thing are with the war I've been around they said. It was a democracy and a. Week or week or 2 to all of our Before We Go back a 2nd or 3rd of the guard is dismissed and a lot of people are. Lost and Bess was a lot of those others is it you know he said to conduct the referendum. Who not only don't don't want to go on the one. It's. You know you go to sleep but sides of the people this country you've got to hold. It is accept it. And a lot of people come and say well. Yeah I mean nobody. Also aren't facing those really ourselves to blame but then it doesn't. Work Well 1st of those then everyone doesn't some people have some people still clearly distraught about it and saying that isn't going to be the case and I should like to hear from anyone in that camp this morning Graeme and that if a thanks very much indeed Tracey said I'm feeling wonderful this rubbish about board Boris damaging the n.h.s. Nearly all the nest is in dire for the last week that I spoke to were hoping Boris would get in Great Britain will be great again wretch says if momentum hadn't been in charge of labor the result would have been different if David Miliband had been in charge the result would have been very different and Nick texted responding to Rebecca too little too late I had no canvases where I lived from Labor a tool which is Devon all these things she sang should be pushed to us before I don't vote purely because I really I didn't vote because I didn't know who to vote for right let's go back to Exeter and John John so that's better that's a much better line Ben Bradshaw was back in office and you voted for him so you must be happy about that today but what about the rest of the country where I. Live So really that's lying really isn't going to work I'm so sorry about that we've had to go visit it and Brian needs to Johnny's to sit on the roof or something Bryan until Katie Now we took your predictions on cheese day and I made a nice of them all in my notebook umbrella. And you kind closest. Run about 40 only. 80 whatever it is that was the closest we go from the political expert Jason rifling who said between 30 and 60 he's a political expert political scientists and even he didn't get the the majority they got so you said on 14 you don't think things like that are actually and are among a lot rebut I'm probably going to say can we have the lottery numbers place when I'm off air. Apply for a part time job as a pundit or something. Now you presume where they go you predicted the majority but how do you to fight yourself into k. . Any and totally independent who was originally 'd Greg's right why wasn't. Because of that they want Rex It doesn't always mean near as we can you know sort of one consolation and this morning we may get it done you know when I But you didn't vote Conservative even get bricks down was that message all the way through. I will I will I will be going back to Labor some point when they get their selves sorted out and I mean I love got a consolation prize that we 'd need to. Break. A jade in particular take a dislike to the Lib Dem leader and she's been 'd in the municipal. Since it was about her that you didn't like when I wrote. 'd you know she can turn round saying well what would strap the talk to the people we stroll up to 50 which means drop the vote of the referendum you know which is quite all day she's so mean she should never be saying things like you were told by said Kevin Foster's been returned with 29863. Yeah he's gone up 6 points. Roderick Bennett needs to be seen as more memory shop plus you know we have a new shop plus 6.2 percent of the vote so he's really gone up and the next I'm counted it was liberal Democrat 12140 so one of their what a big group even they were well behind when they really and the independent Usagi voted for James Chan or is it 648 votes. You're going to value says that was very much on Boris Johnson's mind this morning listening to him saying King the people he may not vote to conservative historically obey full sang King foot for lending your vote and promising to do you proud now as he's come out of the original. Effects what are you generally you've got such a big majority and it will give him confidence and then one day you may turn up an interview with Antony and you never know. But he's got to prove Himself to you hasn't he Brian you think he will. Well how do you really don't know I really don't know and. I hope he does anyway I hope he does what he said he was going through and. We make you know find out find out whether he was so we may know really about that you know interesting so you can give it a try it's far from a very well done on your punditry Brian again I would if we have a political predictions again will be ringing you up thank you for. Not reaching. Brian until he was close out of everybody he predicts is when we did this on Thursday a Tory majority of a well he said up to 40. And it's turned out to be a lot higher than not. I think Yeah well good for him that majority of 78 they've got 101 a 34 let's have your thoughts did you get what you wanted How are you feeling this morning. It's a general election finding a special b.b.c. Radio. At. Alan. S. Just not. The question is she. Going . To go she likes to discuss. Some. Things with the. Cats. Which I do every day but normally a little bit. Normally start at one today from want to clock until 3 you got fits and until that time you've got me and most importantly you telling me to get what you wanted in this storm of election results incredible that even our political scientists Jason rifle didn't quite predict the size of the majority that the Conservative Party would get by any Stephens or thank goodness the Tory government has been returned with a majority that can now not only get past it but address the many problems we still have as country not least the lingering ashes of all stairs as a direct result of the terrific debt the last Labor government left the country with says Brian how do we get people to understand that when they have no money to pay your way either begin selling things or you cancel things the lesson is that austerity comes along because you can no longer afford it people need to understand that we lost policemen and other public services because the only way to keep things you can't afford is to borrow someone else's money so that's what Bryant thinks and I'd like to know about you we've had a flurry of course but there is a line free at the moment if you're listening and feeling Joyce and jubilant all really down in the dumps today it's a pretty extreme result isn't it so how you feeling about it and what do you predict for the next couple of weeks and indeed for the end of January looks like we will almost certainly I can't imagine why not but said that before that we would leave the European Union at the end of Jan you how are you feeling about that on this morning right 3rd time lucky John in Exeter can you hear me yeah yeah. You to flee clear line now right let's get back to the question I was saying to you labor Ben Bradshaw returned in Exeter but with a slightly more reduced majority How you feeling about how it was. For me because I recently moved down here. And. Lived in sorry for. 2 years. Which is a conservative a constituency I've always voted Labor right adventure I've got down here
