Radio again. We're taking you back to Bethlehem on this 3rd Sunday in Advent will be hearing what happens when one church and school join together in Guernsey to celebrate the Nativity will be heading off to some open on the Hill in Jersey where they've got a special service that includes acapella carols and Kana pays for all and we continue our look at today's homecoming celebrations on the 74th anniversary in Albany of that event will be hearing from the president of the states of all the need to and what kind of Christmas cards do you send your loved ones what do they say about you and how you respond to them we'll be finding out before half past 8 this morning well earlier this one if you're with us just after 7 o'clock you'll heard the story of b. To Thompson. A woman from Albany who lived through the occupation was evacuated to Lancashire and then return to Ireland for the homecoming on this day 74 years ago. Told us her remarkable story and spoke to our reporter Woodrow and would then spoke to William Tate Now William is the president of the state of Albany and he asked him specifically about today's homecoming celebrations my role really is to facilitate the events of the day we've developed a program which will be followed and I just have to ensure that we deliver given the significance of this year the best. We have ever done. And that's what I hope to do and this is the your 1st home coming day at how do you feel about you know have paying such a pivotal role in the day's events it's a privilege because I recognize as do the rest of the community the sacrifices that were made by the people who came here at the end of the war who came back to find scenes which one cannot begin to imagine but nevertheless were prepared to put their backs into reestablishing the community and that's what they did and I think those of us who are privileged to live here now shouldn't forget how hard it must have been and how heartbreaking it must have been so from my perspective I feel a real sense of gratitude and that is something which this community always reflects every year and it's something that we should never forget . Now I understand you're going to get a couple of special visits from Gans is that right yes the left tenant governor is attending this year and also the dean of Guernsey So again that also raises the profile of the homecoming and adds another layer really so we're all looking forward to that and I know when it comes to liberation day in you have the morning which is quite some breath there in a reflective Rifat affair and then in the afternoon it's more sort of celebration of liberation and freedom what would you say the tone of the day it's like you know to name I think it it's an upbeat tone I think that yes we all recognize and there is a it is a somber occasion when we recognize what happened but then again we then need to say yes that happened but what were the consequences and the consequences were a spirit of determination which has been the glue that held this community together and I think that is what we should celebrate the personal commitments that were made by those people who chose to continue to live on this island now it's the 74th anniversary of course this year of homecoming next year we have Liberation Day $75.00 and also the 75th anniversary of homecoming what plans are in place to make it a bigger event is there any plans in place or are you just still looking at I know it's a year away or every year away well we're focused on the moment on delivering this year and then as soon as this year has been successfully delivered then we will start to look again as a community how we're going to best recognize next year's homecoming event William Tate president of the states of old only talking there to Edward Rowe on today's homecoming celebrations and if you missed Edwards chat would be to Thompson a woman who lived through the occupation and was evacuated to Lancashire and then returned to the island for homecoming on this day 74 years ago well you missed a treat and you can listen back on the b.b.c. Sounds of it is certainly well worth it she joins me just after 7 o'clock this morning. Well it's a time of Gen hearing isn't it we're joining towards Christmas collectively we are counting down the days towards Christmas through this period of happened to this period of preparation and we're looking for shepherds for Angels and wise men are more likely probably will find wise women we're all familiar with the nativity story but one church and scorning and see have put their ideas together to bring in the tippity experience for all shall have a and Claire Caxton behind the project is called follow the star in the forest and both women I'm pleased to say are with us this morning here on b.b.c. Radio again z. Why the name shame what's this all about. Good morning Matthew lovely to be speaking with you while follow the star we've really summed it up their. Story something that we've been thinking about for so many years and we wanted to play when I from Forest Methodist church and parish church wanted to unable the story to be told in the community so that rather than it being sort of if you like kept within the 4 walls of the churches. And a salable for everybody to join in and have a joining in walking the tippity the stuff today and the weather's going to hold off hopefully Claire tell us more about what you're planning to do to bring this Nativity to life that good morning Matthew Well we're glad to see a bit of blue sky out there because we are. Going to walk through the parish and we will be relaxing the parts of the Nativity story traces on and we've got lots of people dressed or not as the various characters and have a real donkey walking along with us so we're starting at the parish church and walking the route through the forest parish for those that know about. And they're not to live on schools or the final nativity scene in the school. What kind of work goes into planning something like this are you. Confident enough people turn up when you have all the characters you need. Yes there's a huge team we've been very ably assisted by Pete sala in putting this together he's the sort of details man but between us there's a team of county can tell you tens and tens of people those who'll be dressing up as the characters but those who'll be providing the refreshments when they get to the road and those who keep welcoming those who have been doing behind the scenes things those who've been part of the team making starts with the children and stories primary school in the round so really a huge team effort that in a way started just after last Christmas when we did that we in light of last year's being a wet weather the tippity and then we didn't do the journey in the way we thought we were going to and we thought we'd like to give it another go and see if we could and we're really excited that we're going to be able to do things outside this afternoon it doesn't really chime does it with the Bible story when you think what Mary and Joseph went through that we hold out as often postpone it a bit because it rains on us. Maybe maybe we're going to be a little bit more realistic that it makes you know whatever comes we've you know it's going to happen way great if you like it's coming ready or not isn't it yeah exactly we just got up to go with it and to paraphrase a phrase ring when this Nativity is going to get down is a minute well you know if you want to put it like that yes but definitely you know in the hide and seek coming ready or not the same with Christmas absolutely the same at 4 o'clock this afternoon outside the parish church are you dressing up. Well Sean and I are the narrators we are in costume as such but I'm sure that we're going to wear something. Underneath the layers of warm. Performance on the Guernsey concert band is likely to be on the cards as well well yes because we're singing carols you know to each stopping point and so yes we're going to have a group of. The brass players from the concert band to accompany us as well also I think we have. Joe who plays the piano accordion she's going to be accompanying singing in London school hall for the people who don't want to do the walk because we're very aware that some people are not quite as mobile as others so if anyone doesn't want to do the walk that still wants to be part of the final scene they can go straight to live on. 4 o'clock and hundreds of Christmas carols. And one other contribution we are looking forward to having this afternoon is live on down school choir are going to be taking part as well you know we're really delighted that that's going to be up to happen right so we've got to arrive at the Parish Church 1st have a way and then we'll end up at the rundown school that's right yeah yeah actually by around 5 o'clock. So if you take about an hour and fingers crossed you won't get too wet in the process. Thank you both so much for joining us and I hope all goes well today and have a happy Christmas thank you for joining us. And everyone Thank you Charlotte and Claire lovely to talk with you there from follow the star in the forest the nativity scene with a twist which is playing out and see tonight from 4 o'clock arrive at the Parish Church in forest plenty of time and then end up at the round and school by 5 o'clock and if you want to get to the round and score for 5 o'clock at the end then you'll be made very welcome and thanks for the whole team for telling us all about 60 minutes as they check on the headlines this morning comes from Chantal Hafele good morning the diocese of Soulsby will now have responsibility for Jersey and Guernseys Anglican churches after both Deen reason agreed to move old and he is celebrating 74 years since homecoming date when the 1st islanders who were evacuated returned home following the occupation and Jeremy Corbyn has apologized for his part in Labour's crushing defeat at the u.k. General election mystical but is coming under pressure from some within Labor to stand down sooner rather than later the weather for the Channel Islands sunny periods and occasional showers some heavy the wind is Southwest fresh false 5 just wrong full 6 the top temperature today in Jersey 11 degrees and 10. And a reminder of the weather that's causing problems on the travel front today winds and high tides have led to waves breaking over the sea walls on Guernseys coast and of course on Jersey South Coast water and a breeze on the roads along the coast so just be aware of that high tide or about 5 or 6 minutes ago so some flooding may occur just be mindful of that it's an orange warning it's a caution that is being issued by the jersey Met Office right now so an orange warning in force no major problems Tony about on the road so that you can update me if you know differently now the rapid sailing storm from Somalia and Jersey canceled today Victor Hugo's savings to and from grumble in Jersey Carol. And chieftain arrived in some people with the papers behind Churchill at $628.00 but it got there nonetheless well done to them at the clipper is setting between the islands and the u.k. And tonight if you've got an update to get into your. Late 193 to. Coming up shortly acapella carols and Kenna pays for all. With 2 hours of music on the easy side returns this Sunday and I'll be taking you back to my $957.00 to look at the hits and headlines from the end of the year I'm now traditional visit to what used to buy another couple version on embassy records there's the Babbitt stereo little screen thing to look forward to plus the 60 sequins the free Beatles classic rock n roll and remember and backing up the rig it's a mother in law would close if you join me this summer to forget them go mellow hear on b.b.c. Radio Guernsey Ok what it Tony thank you very much indeed 19 minutes past 8 what's the future for our parish churches Inc and see how well they adapt to meet modern needs we'll be hearing from one church community which is being proactive at making sure that his building remains at the center of its local community after the catell in just a moment or 2 into their parish church. Oh it's that time of year when Christmas carol concerts of course are a regular treat this coming week some open on the Hill Church in some very large inches he will be hosting there carol concert is on Wednesday evening and they'll be acappella carols often canopies served to one and all and also featured the music of the Hoppen armors and they'll be singing a way to raise funds for they are an ally and also for the jersey lifeboat Association the knees Waller is the organizer of the event and she's been telling her Ribeiro what's in store our next week Wednesday the 18th of December we're having said open on the Hill chat Christmas carol comfort but it's likely different this year different in 2 ways firstly we're doing it in aid of the hour an ally the jersey lifeboat and the chair so we're splitting the profit I'm hoping up to people cam is going to be a really fun evening we've got up but now on is signaling in the 1st half. With the congregation singing lots too we've got acapella jetty they are absolutely and they're a delightful group and they come back around again in the 2nd half and they'll do probably 33 pieces and then they're bound up to their on your supper. There are such fun just as help but notice that not only have we got these 2 groups we've got Katie Marr a lot shit who anybody who's heard her sing she is just gorgeous and not only that we've got Jessica Garton who's going to sing Mary Did You Know It's a lovely lovely tune I have only heard it once and she sing it's a beautifully and equally we've got an experiment at Coors young grandson who are do some cool Christmas tunes maybe it being the proceeds are going to the are an airline and Jersey lifeboats as well as obviously the church so why these organizations Well you see we're really close to the sea and sedate been on the Hill with just up from the sea and we've always felt that supported my life it would be wonderful but actually I was rescued by a lifeboat once it was we were in the Kia canal or just by the killer can now. And. The boat broke down at about 3 o'clock in the morning and the lifeboat came out as quickly as it possibly could it was there in 20 minutes. And we were right in the river in the middle of the river with big huge tankers coming out of the side of us and it was really scary you know lifeboats are amazing things and now we've got to win Jesse we didn't expect to have to I think we want we want them to be together and we want people to support them together but you know I haven't told you when it starts I was just going to ask what time is the chloral concert on Well what we do is we gather there from 6 o'clock there is some packing up in the church and this parking. Lot of carnage and it's from 6 o'clock to 7 o'clock we have can appear is galaxies of wine or whatever and it's a sort of lovely gathering and 7 o'clock prompt. The Reverend Mark Bond who is in charge of the Carroll County he is out come Pat help very ably by Andrew Parker they will start a concert and I hope they'll be lots of people there because I know it's going to be such fun tickets which are available on the door are 10 pounds each and there is a raffle as well Maureen one of our members does a beautiful raffle every year and it's her donation I think she she does it all herself and so there's a lovely raffle which we draw at half time now there is $11.00 small problem and that is that it's having their parish welcome evening on the same evening so it may be that there are people in the parish who feel that they've got to go to that when they've finished come up to the church come and join us even though the concert is going on it's going to be a very relaxed concert the whole idea is to have fun before Christmas and if you don't get better half time and only charge you half a ticket that seems reasonable to me Donny is while other wonderful journeys want to talking to her embarrass She's the organizer of the annual Carol. Concerts and open on the Hill Church in sin is this Wednesday the 18th at 6 o'clock tickets will be available on the door for 10 pounds parking is available to see if you fancy some acapella carols even cut price acapella carols if you arrive at halftime and caliphates be sure to head down there stop shipping I've been in touch this morning thanks to the team there as always there are savings that being brought forward they'll be leaving Guernsey at 9 o'clock and heading back from socket 10 just to sailings today going to suck at 9 coming back at 10 that's because of the bad weather we'll check on that weather forecast in just a moment or 2 from Jim Garvin who's at the Met Office the parish church has a rich history behind it dating back to the bronze age there are some interesting plans for its future in Guernsey there and it begins with the removal of 7 sets of pews from the church Chris Workman is the rector's warden in the catell and he's been telling our Miranda Griffin why they're doing it we put a refractory in a few years ago. As part of sort of organization of the back of the church and we put a disabled toilet in which we felt was definitely needed with an old aging congregation and now we want to take some pews out which will give us a bit of receding space as if we want to have its peace and then how many would you say we have what we've got 6 pews if you want to want to take out we've made application to the plumbing department to remove them so we will be waiting on them now and what kind of difference would that make then to people coming here on every Sunday some of them I'm sure yes have a service on a Sunday and also on a service on a Wednesday we have other services because of Christmas services coming up after the services we usually provide team freshman's and this would definitely give us a nice comfortable area to sit in after well we'll put some comfortable chairs and some coffee tables and it would just really finish the the triangle off that we. Sort of started off in the scent of the church and what kind of stage you are now that do you think it could be done by Christmas so he set up a little bit to have pull that I think next Christmas probably yes yes we've got some make up mission from the pro quo management board for the cattle church. Permission from the advisory council we thought it cost it so really the last last part of the jigsaw is to get planning permission and then get the builders into trying to take the work and how does this work then compared to other churches are they trying to revamp their areas as well or is it just your church it's very doing this push No I think most churches now are realizing that they need to utilize their space better. I know some Peters is in the midst of organizing there's I think they're doing the full the full triangle is the we've we've looked at. As all the churches us Matthews have taken a few pews out of the back of their church to have a bit more space and also I believe other churches are looking at this this is well and what's funding like then is it easy enough to get the funding you need to make these changes very difficult to be v
