Radio. 4 Well we're counting down towards Christmas every Sunday morning through Advent It's the 2nd Sunday in Advent if you go to our Twitter feed with it the 2nd candle in our Ivan I invite you to stay with me this Sunday morning for a program that's all about either life in our faith communities and it's been a real privilege this past week to be out in those communities in some Martins church in Jersey in the Methodist church there for our Christmas carol service there and also in the Shiloh church in go and see for a Christmas carol service there and you'll be able to hear those services on Christmas Day and on Boxing Day but you also have to hear a flavor of them later on in this morning's program we've been playing some of your favorite carols and seasonal song. Already And we're going to tell you know what's going on in Island church life and where we're ticking off the islands today sorry we're not in Sark today but we're in all the other islands all the other principal islands anyway as we come together to celebrate Christmas and we'll be looking at some much laughter additions hearing local choirs and will be together preparing for the big day itself so please do stay with me now in this half hour of the program why our pilgrimage is a sacred experience we hear about the journey to the shrine of our lady at Walsingham in Norfolk this taking place in May Still to come today we're also going to take you to Nativity with a difference we'll be hearing about a life size nativity scene that's going to be created total in Guernsey later today . Now we're all on a journey only a spiritual journey perhaps or a journey through life maybe it will end up with a spiritual just a nation and along the way we learn all sorts of things not only about ourselves but also about the journey and the people with whom we share that journey much like life when we learn along the way we hope will reach our final destination and for Christians that final destination they believe is heaven Well the Anglo-Catholic churches in Jersey sent looks and sent Peters their Anglican churches but they have a tradition of Catholicism within them they're taking pilgrims to the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in Norfolk next year Laura price went to the parish of St Peter in Jersey to meet with the rector their father Michael Phillips who is going to be leading the pilgrimage this is the 3rd year that we've been and St Luke's in the east of the island and seen Peter's in the West with both what are called Anglo Catholic churches within the Church of England and we join together to take pilgrims to the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham which is in Norfolk 3 years ago never been done from the island before and the 1st year we got 17 and now we're up to 30 so. It's growing and it's a wonderful thing to go away on pilgrimage to a place like waltz again this particular program it is very significant Anglican and Catholic tell me why so this is the Anglican shrine there which it takes quite a long time to get there Norfolk is big you get to London you think of we nearly there but you know not. At this journey this is part I think of the Bill Graham it because you're all of a coach together and rubbing shoulders one with another and of course that that does sort of bring you closer together and you're on the journey together and the travelling. On the bus and the traveling in terms of a spiritual journey a sort of interlinked if you like and we're all on a journey at another level called life and one day we get to the final destination which is heaven so a pilgrimage is in microcosm if you like. Analogise with the greater journey that we are all on because it's so significant to these 3 different communities it can be such a great way of bringing people together what would you say about that when we went and the time of year that we go it's individual retreat pilgrimages but there are various times in the year when the whole village comes alive with thousands and thousands of people and there's a great procession through the village as well. All the choirs and the clergy and so on and it's just a wonderful wonderful occasion and it brings people of all different Christian faiths together and there's a wonderful experience at the National pilgrimage is in May on on the bank holiday in May Why do people tend to go on pilgrimages and I think there are these places in the world which although we can meet God anywhere and in any situation there are places in the world which seem to God makes himself known in a deeper way than in other places and was and is one of those places and it's been the case for you know 1000 years as you mentioned before it can be just as much a spiritual on an emotional journey as it is a physical one and what can people get from number one. It's it's not it's not. Hard work in the sense that as I said earlier we're all on the same journey ring good company we're in each other's company and there's great fellowship it's body mind and spirit that's been thought of so so bodies are attended to because the food there is excellent I can tell you it is the so the Norfolk beer and we're attending 2 minds because we meet we discuss we hear talks. And live and spiritually is the worship and this wonderful atmosphere that there because you're all in the same journey father Michael Phillips who is the rector of St Peter in Jersey who's leading the pilgrimage next May to the shrine of Our Lady and Walsingham in Norfolk it's a pilgrimage made up of members of judges Anglo-Catholic Anglican churches and Luke's and St Peter's it will set off in May over the bank holiday weekend he was talking there to Laura price and if you'd like to know more about that pilgrimage do get in touch with Father Michael Peters rectory I said off the top of all mail showing them all check on the headlines and the tippity with a difference Christmas isn't Christmas without the nativity story I went to see my youngest son James in his school nativity on Tuesday morning he played a wise man cast against type and he had a whole line to say which he delivered with great aplomb but was a wonderful wonderful occasion and very special of his 2 and I'm sure you've probably seen a few Nativity over the years but what about a life sized one is that a new experience for you let's head to the top of all church in Guernsey Today they're celebrating during Advent as they continue their kowtow towards Christmas the rector's warden there is Sue Brooks the rector is the Reverend Mark charming and they've been talking to Stephanie Gabbert about their nativity. We've been talking about it and thinking we've got an amazing field. But we really want to do something at Christmas so. You can explain it so well I came up with the idea and actually it wasn't just me there were other parishioners who said why don't we have a right so I continue to stick with sort of life science characters and so having been well drilled and don't do it scarecrow So we've got to cast. A number of us it's not just a church thing it's a parish thing just saying have helped and the general public have helped as well and so we've got back to stable in the in the field we've got some characters with. Got some life on the wall scumming along. For all the welcome to come and have a look at it as you say lots of people have been involved both of the people together with the building where. We can move from a shattered. New supply go to getting his parents undone. So it's a real parish event it's not just a church of interest you know we want to send a message of Christmas to the general public mainly it's not just about the presents and the parties and all the rest of it it wasn't for the fact that Jesus was born on Christmas Day we will be celebrating the top really and I think we have to really get out this journey so this is talk also I think it is the 1st time we've tried it with a lot of got it absolutely right but this is a lie and it's to carry on you certainly do learn as you go along Sue Brooks that who is the rector's warden and the rector himself the Reverend Mark charming TOEFL churching can see where they have a life size Nativity on the home of their before he turned down towards the church in the field. Office encourage you to think about the story than the Timothy but more importantly to celebrate Christmas with them they were talking there to Stephanie gap. 16. Never come to Candy museums before Salat tell me why should they go wash the car in December and they should come because that is all against the history in place they exhibitions we've got the mame and a really interesting elements of guns is history in terms of the not connections you necessarily expect Japan exhibition the link skins it has to Japan like a lot of people we've had come in and say they've just didn't know about it or they've heard bits about the house that summer park but not know the detail of it and we've also got in the greenhouse William Lasher who established links with Costa Rica with the coffee trade and then you've got the art galleries and the archaeology and the folklore.
