Linga 18 minutes past 10 o'clock Ashley Tracey in full Christina Danny listening to b.b.c. Radio. Michael b. Play is firmly of hibernation isn't he if you've got an advent calendar you'll have probably had 15th chalky this morning and the countdown is properly on for the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special yet not long left to go until the big day and to help spread the spirit of the most wonderful time of the year the Jersey Symphony Orchestra is going to be performing a variety of festive carols tonight at the full regents at the Christmas concert expects him anything from Tchaikovsky to John Williams served up with some mulled wine immense Paul iced tea What more could you ask for the conductor Andrew Morton has been speaking to the B.B.C.'s kind of my 1st time on the island Yes yes my my grandparents used to come here in the sixty's and seventy's on holiday and I had many stories not seen everyone's grandparents came here I seen all the pictures and sort of you know sort of I was thinking about it before I came but it's great to be here thrilled to still to be on the island and have been around and seen and we had to drive up to the north coast and then down through some mountains is it and then Buxton tell us they still had a little bit of a tool box and you got a jug of beer as well you were very impressed that you. You know the thing about the Jersey Symphony Orchestra is so you all the Orcs will send out music to all the players but then they only can really come together officially in this last sort of week don't yeah I mean it's a community orchestra essentially But the local players have had a weekend rehearsal already and then they invite lots of friends and and musical associates from from around the place and they all come together for 4 or 5 days start rehearsing at the Town Hall and then eventually for Regent So yeah the day they practice themselves and come together and we put it all together in rehearsal What was that like then when you got together for the 1st time oh well it's always a little bit difficult at 1st because you know you have to take time to let the people jail with each other they haven't seen each other for 3 or 4 months you know it takes a little while but it's coming together already and. We're getting a nice nice working relationship we've had a bit of fun as well of course developed you think Yeah I've seen it I've made a few friends already well I knew some people before because a few people who play in the orchestra play over the Essex Chamber Orchestra and that's how I ended up coming over because I was recommended so I know when 2 people the great friends from from Essex Well let's talk about you that what's your background then how did you when did you 1st pick up the baton Well it's weird actually I mean I started piano when I was about 1112 and then I played the trombone for a bit and then I went to university and I was lucky to be in a university where they had lots of student ensembles so we had a wind band an orchestra choir and our society I was at Lancaster University in our society all the samples in the society were run by student conductors so I got opportunities there and look at there was a also a conducting course at that particular university so I could do part of my degree musical direction so it was a rest years ago degree it was music but you know how you do degrees and you do you know a little bit music history a little bit of analysis composition. And that sort of thing and then performance as part of my performance I could do conducting as as a module so I learned at university what brought a great place to learn and worldly Let's talk about your c.v. Then what you've done then before you've ended up here in Jersey Well I went down to London in the early 2000 to study at Trinity College of Music as it was but it soon became Trinity lab and merged with law school of dance so it's now 20 Lobban Conservatoire of music and dance and I've been working there I teach there in the genie department been there for about 15 years now so it feels like very much part of my life and I'm very tone there what you prefer doing conducting the teaching a little bit of both I mean you learn very much through teaching you have to break things down so you sort of question the things that you do yourself and and you know you start to self analyze and and learn through through your student. So. It's kind of said before so it's a pull together of loads of different people from all walks of life and yarn and amateur players than those a few professional from nests come in as well I mean what is that like when they're when they're all together when there's that kind of gel and there's that kind of making music together what's that dynamic like there's nothing quite like making music together it's it's so different from listening to music on a cd or or even on the radio sorry to say so but you know that live music making There's a free so on in the air it's so electric everybody's listening to each other everybody is creating music out of nothing it's very it's very generous of and full of life excellent So what's on the program then this weekend Well there's a huge range of things I mean we've got some Christmas music we're doing an overture by Nigel Hess who some may know as being the composer of the theme tune to 80 when truck investigates and various other. T.v. Shows but he's put together an overture which combines some famous carols like dingdong Marian Hyde at the halls and a couple of lesser known carols such as. Far and infant infant holy. So that's that's really fantastic piece lots lots of joy in that one and then we're doing some classical favorites we're doing Romeo and Juliet by Tchaikovsky. Called very very long very very topical indeed music from The Apprentice and that's it for that because the copyright but we are doing simple coffin Oh yes so you're thinking the Romeo and Juliet ballet which indeed as you're quite right is the not my Romeo and Juliet song wrong. But funny enough the prophet who wrote the into the Apprentice we're also doing some music by him while he's right there exactly so you know we got we're doing his lieutenant p.j. Suite which is music from a further 930 s. Film an absurdist film about a lieutenant that doesn't really exist but all the all the servants of the Emperor have to pretend that he does in order to keep him happy excellent. I mean it seems very odd I mean. It's fairly Thesz to be in it it's really festive Yeah I mean we're going to do some carols for the audience as well so they can join in a little bit and well very lucky to have 2 guests really in the concert we've got the the Bollea Chamber Choir from school who have been so well prepared I went to rehearse them on Wednesday they were mazing those those young singers and they're doing a couple of. Pieces a router Carol called it in the nativity Carol which I'm sure many of your listeners will know and then a piece called babe of Bethlehem which is a little bit of audience participation so anybody who comes be prepared to open your vocal chords and then we really look at this we've got Burton coming who is a wonderful saxophone player who was in a finalist in the b.b.c. Young musician in 2018 and he's playing a piece called Saxo Rhapsody by Eric Cote someone there Eric Coats is the composer of sleepy lagoon which of course is the thing to Desert Island Discs I think. But great music you know I was none of us not many of those in the orchestra have done this piece before but it's so super. Now Sunday morning speaking to all Kona bugga ahead of the jazzy Symphony Orchestra's Christmas comes says at full Regent It's tonight from. Sounds like it could be that new Christmas Eve. There's club ready and last night I told you that me whilst you are he is officially the funniest man in pulp isn't listening to. I was going to say pack this now you know what are you listening to all Sunday midmorning program usually hosted by Christina could die nay she's off I'm in with you until 12 o'clock ish I think on the way after 11 o'clock my last guest is Balder cool bits she still has her legal career at the age of 37 after. Having a children she's now senior partner Kovar and the k. At family law firm that she helped to set up of course an attitude aim to in 2007 we'll get to know her a little bit better just after 11 this morning and only find me on the wireless between 6 and 9 Monday to Friday but it is a pleasure to be with you on this Sunday the 15th of December there's loads going on in the islands on the way we're off to the Norman Christmas market the French Market eighties back in Jersey but late fashionably late because of the weather forecast the stormy seas but it's being cancelled that sort of thing Harry Barrett from the b.b.c. Is on his way down now to sniff out the saucy song in the Kelvedon house or when all the beautiful things that smelly cheeses from the French markets will be hearing from him shortly also organizers of Jersey's butterflies say that today's Christmas parade is going to go ahead after strong winds meant that it was priced by and last Sunday $28.00 flights are going to be traveling through St Halley alist up bright and sparkly for unquoted 5 this afternoon starting at maritime halves the parade will finish with a fireworks display after it was canceled at the moonlight parade in the summer because of the poor weather so that's good also on today the simply Christmas market still in the role Square and the United Reformed Church is I on have got a joint house service tonight whether joined by the parish church at 6 Everyone is welcome and it's a Christmas Craft is marketed jazzy lavender and some balls they've also got a therapist on hand to talk about how lavender can use relaxation everyone's welcome that it's free to go in the garden while they all are selling tea and coffee for just a pound to go south that a free mince pie or slice of life and a short ride on the swaying I love that the lavender gardens ice skating still on full Regent and as we've just had the. Also I want to. Thank. You out. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow Wow. Wow. And you make my dreams come true on the way. Together. For Christmas. Now that could have been a council of event to the bad weather this weekend but they've made a yes the. At the way back in action head of Christmas. Been working tirelessly to make French festivities even. In the. Morning Harry. Of the moment and it's freezing cold out here but I think. It's a huge tree. Full of white Christmas lights a situated in between all of these tents in a circle there's jaws draws full of cheese sausages fresh fruit people calling out different names of wines I can't pronounce Anyway let's get back to the reason why we're here so do you fancy taking a piece of France back home with you maybe your neighbors have just managed to get the virus across in time luckily street us to some amazing French elegancies the Norman market is back in action so I'm here with new b. From the I'm a soldier Normandy front of a to say so myself so just made it and how was the journey Well I actually the limb is online on the lives he hears so that the traders and quite a rough crossing apparently yesterday evening but it was the only crossing this weekends and and they made it lucky and lucky for all of us because as you said we can we can enjoy some cheese and some hot side there and later on during the day and you will have crap so what falls and and sausages sandwiches all coming directly from Normandy so before we went on air you said that normally it be more full than this would be like a round circle surrounded by 10 so how disappointed were you then that the traders couldn't make it that they were you know when they were supposed to well we we still have a good turnout since we have 7 traders here we were supposed to have 9 so 2 of them went able to make it because of the change. But of course it's disappointing but they will be back next year for other markets and in the meantime we still have a lot of products to offer to everybody so that's good so what work goes into feeling something like the software and I mean it's hard to be a quick turnaround so you can. Describe the work that goes into it well it goes back a few months or. So we knew and we work. With customs of course and with Commodore ferries So this week a was on the phone quite a bit with from there actually. And waiting for the captain's dish decision and ends to so yes we work with condo and we work with Jayson actually was from here was managing the weighbridge and it was helping is really a great deal every time the traders are coming in is doing all of the work with the the government have to have the licensing to be able to sell alcohol and sell products here so it's so yeah it's quite a bit of work and. And for every market it's the the same so we do a plan for the traders when they arrive everything has to be set up in the certain way as well so so yeah every time we have a cancellation. Everything needs to be changed and the licensing everything and we need to communicate or so a lot about about the change of course so that took me a while as well this week to just one people that the market with and we're starting Friday but to send a end to Wednesday instead of Tuesday so so yeah it's a lot of work but we're happy to do it and especially when we see the Dow announce and that's people are really enjoying it I mean listen lots of people here already and then it's quite early so what software today then can you give our listeners a sense of what they can expect from a normal market yes sure so 1st of all we have heard the 1st stall from ms on their end on Monday in their motion so if you 2 weeks ago we started to shop her
