Radio lates tons gut reaction website which has been set up by my next guest today Tom Underwood from holes but was only 27 when he fest fell ill with ulcerative colitis 6 May say to his. Tom now lives with an ostomy and he's keen to raise awareness about bowel disease and living with an ostomy Good morning Tom Good morning Stephanie So when did you 1st discover that something was wrong it was back in 2010 when I was 27 years old so some people with inflammatory bowel disease suffer with the symptoms for years and years but some people like me just fail firing one day and then I remember it was a Friday evening and I had fish and chips for take and I felt really on well after like really severe abdominal cramps and then I went to the doctors and then eventually you know was in hospital so all happened really quickly for me and then 2 weeks later I had my colon removed gosh the you just you went to cheap H.P.T. Friday night and you just saw him a valid dodgy case of some fish and chips because you know we we followed some dodgy food every now and then when you just put it down to that but the stomach cramps was so painful yeah really severe so the symptoms that you get with inflammatory bowel disease include really severe stomach cramps noisiest sickness diarrhea so I knew something really bad was up and I went to the doctor hoping I just get a tablet antibiotic but fortunately it's a bit more severe than that and then I went into hospital and is this it at this pain underlying all throughout your life but I needed something to trigger right no no so nobody really knows what the cause is for inflammatory bowel disease so it just sort of crept upon me out of the blue really. So this week is National Crohn's and Colitis we and before this happened to you Did you have any awareness whatsoever to do anything about it no I didn't have a clue you know when I was 27 years old I'd never really been into hospital I didn't know what inflammatory bowel disease was I didn't know what an ostomy or a stone was so it was took a bit of a just an at 1st you know to get my head around things but I quickly adapted to the situation I think if you're in the situation where you have to have you come on and moved and have to have asked me if I said you know you wouldn't choose no we would choose to have that big you quickly adapt to the situation and it does eventually become you know normal really so that's the point that I want to get across is that having an ostomy you know it's not the end of the world you can live a very active healthy lifestyle and for a lot of people as well that be may be suffering for years and years with crones of all sorts of colliders you know having an ostomy gets rid of a lot of their symptoms so they're actually grateful for it because you know allows them to live a more healthy and active lifestyle than the quit before and the thing that some people think there's there's a stigma attached to having an ostomy maybe yeah I mean I think there's a bit of a to be around powder season talking about it as a result of that I think maybe a lot of people suffer in silence I mean when I was 1st diagnosed when I was 27 I told my family obviously but I only told a couple of friends and that's just the way I dealt with it and it was fine and I sort of kept it to myself but then when I had my most recent surgery a month ago I decided beforehand well would be a good opportunity now that I'll be living with an ostomy permanently for the rest of my life it's a good opportunity to open up and start talking about it and share my experience and be positive force on the subject because a lot of people don't really know where to turn when other embarrassed or you know knocks the confidence a little bit and you know my whole message is that you can get on with life perfectly normal with an ostomy because you can I mean you're living proof that in front of you looking fabulous. So 6 major surgeries in your last surgery was quite recent Yeah I've had 6 major surgeries to use about a so hope I don't need to go into hospital to go anytime soon. But yeah I mean if you Gemma I lie journalist now that I want another gem honest that it is and I still sleep oh yeah the experience of going on the journalist that honest that is critical really these places when you go when you've got it the 1st couple you get a little bit afraid but when she got a few It's not nice when you go and I say feeling that fuzzy feeling when you're late and I think when I've chatted to a couple of nice attests to mine over the years and the also I say to them do people get stressed at this point since you would not believe the people we have to literally kind of hold down on the bed because they're so afraid. But I quite like is that bit when you drift enough going see on the other side yeah I remember when I 1st went in for surgery they said count down from 10 and I got to about a nice out completely but I'm guessing that those 1st couple surgeries for all of them I'm not I must stress I'm not joking about surgeries here because it's very serious but I think you also have to like you have with this you've got a glass half full. Kind of view on all of unease it's a very positive outlook and I do that with with with surgery for can I try not to scare myself trying just be kind of you know about if I can yeah I mean is a really serious condition so there are around 120000 people in the U.K. That live with an ostomy But if you're walking down the street you know if you saw me you wouldn't know that I had an ostomy but it can be really challenging analysts for people and obviously your body does go through quite a fundamental change when you have the ostomy surgery so yeah I wouldn't want to belittle the condition of at all but I think if you have a positive mindset you know you can deal with it very well and your body adjusts and you get your head around the situation really and then you don't have an ostomy or having inflammatory bowel disease define who you are now. It should never define you should No not at all and that's that's the message I want to get across out there really. You shouldn't feel uncomfortable or embarrassed have an inflammatory bowel disease there's loads of good support groups out there there's a really good charity Crohn's and Colitis they've got really good forums online as well way can ask questions and find out more about the condition and yeah it there are worse illnesses out there although it is you know quite a drastic surgery to have an ostomy. Perspective too and there are a lot worse things that can happen to you so if you have a positive mindset you can crack on with life normally really absolutely I couldn't agree more on the website Tom's got reaction what a great title yeah yeah so you're trying to think of a catchy title also you have set up this website about 2 months ago and it's just to share my experiences share my journey living with an ostomy and you know there are some misconceptions out there that have an ostomy is just an old person's disease inflammatory bowel disease doesn't discriminate against age and it can be or it can affect a lot of people actually in the 20 to 35 year old age bracket and yeah I'm in that bracket just still and I want to demonstrate really to young people as well that you know you can't continue to live a really active lifestyle that you don't need to let it knock your confidence or your body image and that's why a set of the website and what for those people who are in a way I was just joined us halfway through I'm chatting to a Tom Underwood who say he was 27 when he 1st fell ill with ulcerative colitis what is an ostomy an ostomy is well there are different types of ostomates and you usually need it if you suffer from. Cancer or inflammatory bowel disease including crowns and all sorts of colliders So in my situation I had colliders and it was really severe. So I needed my whole color on my large intestine removed so it is really major surgery and if you have all of your colon removed you can't go to the toilet normally. So what the surgeons do instead is they bring out of your small bowel 3 European wall just like an inch or 2 and it's usually to the right hand side of your belly button and then waste passes through that and you collect it in a disposable ostomy pack which you change about every $3.00 to $5.00 days so at 1st obviously it does take a bit of adapting to and you have to learn to look after your ostomy you know with with a bit of time it does it does become the new normal and a lot of people are grateful for having an ostomy like of sad because if you've been suffering as well for years and years with really bad and crowds having an ostomy does get rid of a lot of those symptoms so once you get your head around the whole situation and you learn how to look after your ostomy then you don't really need to let it hold you back I mean it does pose challenges now and again for sure but generally speaking you can you can live an active lifestyle for instance you can go swimming with an ostomy you can play contact spore if that's the thing you don't really need to let it stop you but it's life changing it is the undoubtedly Yeah I mean when I 1st fell ill it was a really difficult time and it's probably like that for everybody if they have an emergency surgery like I did but you do get your head around it there's loads of support out there and I think you know the discussion around our disease is becoming more. People are opening up about it I think with social media as well that's helping and I think the public's understanding about bowel disease is improving and you know the like I said there are about 300000 people in the U.K. With pelvises So a lot of people have to contend with it and it does have its challenges but it doesn't need to stop you from doing anything no it shouldn't any you do see on social media lots of images of human women in particular showing what it's like to live with an ostomy but not so many men Yeah I've noticed that to be honest I don't know why that is but yes. Just one of those things isn't it I think. It's I mean I kept it to myself for about a year so I didn't really open up and talk about it but I think I was that was that just because you fell maybe a embarrassed No not not embarrass you know I was I was able to deal with my situation really well and really positively is just probably the way I am you know I did I told my family obviously in a couple of friends but I was happy to keep it to myself I thought well I've got quite a lot of experience now dealing with the owner so I thought well that would be a good thing to share with people and be a positive force for the condition so yeah we just got a call actually from from Marco says at the support offered by the cost to me association is invaluable and he says the help line is open 24 hours a day and the number if you need it is our 80328457 that's 80328457 the colostomy Association the help they give is invaluable Yeah there are various charities and organizations out there and they all they are really great support and especially with this week being Crohn's and Colitis Awareness Week on social media there's loads of people taking pictures of themselves and it does just help normalize the condition and sort of you know a lot of people like to say would think of how on earth can you sort of manage to live with an ostomy But you know people do it upped and it does become normal and it does become OK And I think that's a really good message to get out there is that although it can be a very difficult disease at 1st you know the difficulties just like any other diseases and it's how you deal with it the matters really. Your website is Tom's gut reaction dot com and they can read about Tom's story on there as well and lots of advice because I'm guessing you felt alone to start with there was nothing much available online Yeah I guess back in 2010 there wasn't as much available online as there is now but a lot of the charities have grown social media has grown as well so with Instagram there's a bit of a sort of community of I.P.T. Patients on there and on Facebook as well as some really good forums where you can ask questions if you're not sure about something. So yeah the Sopore group around the condition is is much better now than it was just even 8 years ago as again Tom Underwoods website is Tom's good reaction dot com and feel free to give the. In fact Sarah's remove the number from my screen. I did have the number actually say can you put it back on is it still that. I was just going to give the number out again if anybody Mr I think is a. 080328457 that's our 803 so 8457 add someone to it thank you so much CONAN This morning it's been it's like you say this week national Crohn's and Colitis awareness week it's been really important to talk about this and get the awareness out there is not yet really important and the bailout or the people doing it so I'm glad just to raise awareness about the condition Tom on doing Thank you so much please come back and see is against the actual world of.
