Start Sunday morning how are you this morning I'm smashing right love I am I think so annoying oh yeah that's always good to have anything to do you know if I drive down only a single for a drive you know you sort of up for. Comment. Well delighted to welcome Aaron in the chair today if you want any gardening questions answered and you want the air in flavor now's the time to call us 180-8389 double 3 double 3 just one small 080389 double 3 double 3 the lines are clear at the moment so is your chance to call is on the number or you might like to texters in which case here this text is an 81 triple 3 and start your message with the word late texts a challenge to your standard message great feel for the scene a taste and B.B.C. Co-judge you can say so much local radio previously B.B.C. Radio Leeds how as a professional man. That's a joke in itself just. How do you how do you cope with this you know one minute it's he bring it down the next minute it's bright sunshine it's warm it's just coping you just have to get on with it I mean for a lot of things it is it is good you know me it is the perfect for conditions for growing but the downside of course is that you've got the perfect conditions for growing so of course so do the weights and soldiers the grass on the lawns and it just kind of multiplies that that is a work that needs to be dome. But in general I mean a lot of the flowering stuff certainly the Rose Garden suffered because it was that the blooms get spoiled by the rain but on the flip side of it which is a subtropical garden which is all foliage and big bananas and you know exotic stuff is absolute thriving so it's that constant balance something the lawyers be happy some things won't some people will be happy so won't. It's just frustrating when you want to get on top of those weeds and you can't because it's either raining or it's too wet to physically get on the beds and bars that's the hard bit railing you can see is there you want to get on with it I'm not versed in getting wet myself but one thing that. I'm very adamant on is that I don't want to go wading in for the sake of it you know plover in about in the beds and borders when it's clearly too wet and make more of a mess than what I achieved by doing the way you did well by the ferocious winds that we had yesterday speak for yourself I can take it. Again it's one of those things where it is a balance some plants kind of the light the extra bit of buffeting to kind of get them settled in bulk I'm all. Along those newly planted trees that went inside of last autumn the well staked a little bit of wind actually not bad strengthens and more is then going back to those bigger foliage things that get battered to pieces and there was more delicate flowering plants that you get smashed. But there's nothing against the thing you can do about it when those ghosts Komal you can kind of do is grit your teeth and wait for them to pass but it's quite hard of being in and around the garden and watching things being smashed to pieces in my out goes out to those people that I've got that you know the heavy damage in the garden friends and colleagues of mine that grow a lot more. You know tropical and tender plants than what I do. And hear them get into oblong to pieces and you know we spend all winter and spring playing and planning and everything's of prepared and ready so in the seeds planted now what's in them to sit back in the summer expect things to be doing their their peak thing and instead just get in smashed by the winds of rain and it is hard sometimes to accept book the same time as God knows where except that there is always the chance that's always could happen the name of the game is no reason they'd suddenly. 080389 double 3 double 3 How about joining our Facebook Sunday gardening on B.B.C. Radio Leeds where we just have knitted another 31 members who are 316392 now incredible indeed Here's one that caught my eye from Selina she says I've got to Amaryllis which refused to die because mine start sprouting again it was out in the cold for him and he started sprouting and it's now one half to well why the other go completely dried it is of allow it to well it's obvious the sun to do what it wants then to and this is always amazing thing with plants where sometimes you very strongly reminded that no matter what we do is is you know control they do have a mind of their own just go with it and most will start water again in the growing part fighting against OK so go with go with low flow let's talk about our plans for the week before we go to our 1st caller the list trying to Larissa purpurea you get in better the only impressed actually I've not said that all this more than ever you to constrain them with are to do well tonight. Of course is always a light always bring another piece or a specimen in soft picked an apartment out in the small and or fine is described things. A long time favorite of mine I do realize this one as I always do with a plan to the way so pretty and what if you'd call it foliage mostly but we do also of these flowers is predominately grown as a pot plant to house plant. To be honest I was a man of a summer holiday so mind on some holidays outside again the can get a little bit knocked about with the weather but they stay in their parts the way the more sheltered part of the garden and the do find they tend to produce a shorter more stocky robust plant by having a solar outside than what they will do on the when the cells but as soon as it comes cold certainly edging towards a frost again it will come back inside commonly known as the false some false Shamrock if I can put my teeth in there is a classic rock solid plumbed with these so I've always 3 faceted leaves in the most strong vivid purple with a tiny tiny little bit of a lighter purple Center which in the right light makes it look almost iridescent. The grow from a tiny car which very easy to grow over easy to buy used by and is a little dry almost like a tiny bulb puts only 2 apart this is in a 5 inch pot those pointed out 10 columns went in this one and it produces quite a nice little show for a long period it will start to look a little bit struggling pull the leaves off let it rest for a little while drying out slightly stuck to water again and it's off again another show of these wonderful vivid leaves and these flowers appear can come on $23.00 sometimes even 4 times a year and the other really interesting thing I've grown this as a pot plant for years and in proper pots I notice little proper Potters always but I went to visit a gallon a few weeks back a private state that grows a lot of produce for restaurants and you know the walled garden there produces fruits vegetables and they were growing this is a micro green and they realize it was edible but what they were doing or grown in large pots in the green our house and as ever is the leaves were a couple of inches tall maximum they were pulling them and using them is in the mix eyelids never seen that done before are those lines of growth to maturity and I thought that was quite fascinating so I want to knock a few of my plants back hardbacks datum again and see what they actually taste like and see how it works and if you know you next week then you know why or why all the name of science and experimentation did indeed get you don't often find such a vivid strong purple color in plants especially in the foliage as with so easy to grow and the best is well that the multiply that quickly so this autumn are not this out and always will be able to make this one pot full of calms then going to 3 or 4 pots worth each having about $10.00 to $12.00 columns in each then the next year they say in the again the same again the same again so the really good football can hope to grow as pot plants to give away for birthdays or Christmases on you know me is nice want to be able to share around and so resilient so easy for thrive on they collect. The drive on lots of attention but like you say now these are just outside in the summer around the gals these are the most callers to those darkest places of the gap in around the this and the bedding plants in pots and complainers and their dogs they for the rest of the summer doing their little thing the ox Salis triangle Lara's purpurea and see where they get triangular is that the foliage from the foliage purpurea presumably multiple that the one. Flies I mean you know now now now that interest in this valley is just where you know very much like myself as well on a night on the leaves close down actually owns or do you see this one that actually semi close well made they will be fully flattened just like I will but the moment is semi closed like myself it's just going to ground 080389 double 3 double 3 Jeremy's on the line Good morning Jeremy Good morning good morning I've got yes how can we help. I'm growing for my daughter's wedding in May next year to settle a couple Clematis After Snow Queen There is not chose that one it's because it's meant to flower in early May and getting married meant back right now I've planted in 2 whole planter which are about 500 centimeters cute under 50500 with a mixture of multi-purpose And John in it's number 3 arcane You know I Something about 3 or 4 inches maybe a bit more below the surface is a thing you meant to do. And I've grown the most literally switch this is all I could go to type trellis which are growing up and ready preparation for next year. However I noticed that a number of the stands certainly going hard in the least black and dying Ryan I'm just wondering what I'm doing wrong I'm walking around with. Everyone so we. Got a mixture and I just understand what I'm doing wrong this several things that could be I mean you said that you planted them 34 inches deep was that deeper than the top of the original root ball Yes So that is a little bit deep So really with anything that's pop grown the ideals of finishing the height is to be just above our so I just below that of your finish it doesn't want to be too deep Clonaid is really the light to be kept moist like to be kept cool but they are very susceptible to rotten off if they're planted to the plea so I would say 1st of all is how one of the been planted. They've been in since June right so chances are you're going to win and I'm a right so the villian for a couple of months of them I've not got fantastically rooted so one of 2 things I would say the 1st one is either try and lift them back up again you know almost dig down with your hands pulls with accomplished way and bring that root ball a political bit if you concerned about doing that for damage in some of the newly formed roots of damage in some of the top growth then I'll just take some of the surface composter ways in other words you're dropping down the level by removing some of the top material congenially you want to be able to take it down so you can just see that root ball the original you know it's a plant that went in and just a covering over certainly no more than about half an inch then it back down and then that certainly finished level don't pour any more on right. On the top to keep it cool it only doesn't get the very 1st thing in the morning but it will catch it . 11 o'clock ish on which that sounds perfect the other thing to bear in mind as well is that even in a pot if it's 500 centimeters Square I think of is that in Q Q Yeah. You put in what size was the pot when it originally went in. It was about. 210 to me today and 4 centimeters wide the longer you are from a reputable. Clinic scroll yet so again we've got to remember you've got quite a smallish root ball going to very large container that large container will hold a large amount of moisture so again rather than just water because you've not watered it for a day or so often because you've not said it for a week. Don't be fooled put your hand in and feel what the compas is like sci fi actually does actually need water is a real hold up moisture for a long time until that root ball is completely grown out and the new container is full of roots it will behold a monster for a long time and again they are susceptible to rotting off if they're in contact with too much moisture so don't get into the habit of just watering should not water for a few days especially those gravel on the surface that will hold the moisture in as well so I would say start to ease back on your water aim remove the gravel reduce the surface level down a little bit you may want to put the gravel back on you may not it is not that desperate really but just watch the surface of the compost and don't allow it to get too moist what you really gets established is that what we call wet dry cycle so between waterings it does want to dry out not to the point to do still dry but it does need to dry out considerably between water in the. Orchard everyday could that's what you need to do now for something like that especially at the moment being dumped as it has been once a week it sounds more than enough to be quite honest but again rather than doing it through process do the job you think and just actually assess whether it needs they are not and should be OK them some of the stems is quite a few. Actually flowering and very well that others are growing up quite tall look at 1st interest and then. Keeled over in. Yeah that sounds classical like overwatering to quite on this there will. Put a process in place to remedy it will pull through that. Jeremy thanks we cool thank you Bob I know that Andrew thought as you've just answered my same climate his question as I have the same problem there are so you go use a little internet and multi hits there yes question from so. She says When is it the best time to cut a privet hedge. Now you time really we're past the bulk of nesting birds but we stand to get into the season where growth will be starting to slow down a little bit so if you leave it much later if you start getting the back end of August into September we always run the risk of getting the hedge starting to get new soft growth just in time for those cold winter frost snow is and so on and so forth which can damage that new growth so you're good time now to get crapped on with it certainly after the end of the month than into the next month you get a little bit too late so I'd say get on with it soon as possible. You can put headphones on listen to David Hoyle's Yorkshire brass 1 o'clock this afternoon and go out to them and absolutely 080389 double 3 double 3 or you can texters on 81 triple 3 put the word leads in 1st don't forget Facebook group Sunday gardening on B.B.C.
