Radio London Jim Davis. 5 past 7 no hello good evening Jim Davis with the right the way through to tonight taking your calls as we travel into the evening on drive time of sitting in for an investor course tonight and tomorrow he's back next week and it's great to have your company the Sebring our lines are open and if you want to join me then it's our 873. 12000 we've been talking predominantly about skin complaint skin conditions and how they've affected your life yesterday we were as you may have heard we were talking about makeup and indeed of the growing phenomenon and more and more men wearing makeup but there was a point in that conversation that was real really enlightening for me and that is the idea of using make up for one of 2 main reasons either to disguise or to enhance the great many people use makeup to enhance their features highlight the cheekbones their eyes their lips that kind of thing and that's perfectly Ok of course and that's arguably precisely what it was designed to do but there's a huge number of people who use makeup to disguise and hide elements of their skin and we did take one call yesterday from somebody who talked about psoriasis and the idea of using makeup to cover it up at least gave them enough confidence to leave the house that led us on to having a lengthy conversation within the team about skin conditions and how they can affect your life in so many many many different ways and we've had some really moving calls and exist examples of that already on the program tonight so if you're just tuning in and you live with a skin condition that affects your life in some way or another either pain or of course in terms of your mental health your confidence levels your ability to interact with people meet someone me to partner even get a job and keep a job in all of these things can be affected by something that is seemingly as simple as a skin complaint because it's never quite simple is it there's always something and it seems that there are so few. One size fits all solutions to these problems that everybody who goes on this journey finds it's protected unchallenging. That's something else I'm learning tonight to keep the calls coming in on this hour 87312000 we've been talking about hyphens in names as well and how significant and important they are you're welcome to share your thoughts and experience on that as well and a lot of other principals Besides But let's get straight back to the calls and Christine's on the line in north London 1st of all good evening Christine. Hi Tim Hi Thanks so much for getting in touch with the program tonight so tell us what to tell us your story. Ok so my story is up until the age of about 34 I have. Family who will escape. And I think I went for a sunbed and discovered some areas on my chest that was kind of a dark pink and then gradually faded and there was no pigmentation the top right Ok and that became apparent when you actively timed the rest of your body right and I say Ok go on. And then I discovered a couple of other areas 'd which started off fairly small. And obviously wanted to be investigated was preferred it's all just on my g.p. . To be told very bluntly in fact I remember. The appointments so so so clearly that I had better like I Yes Ok. And a sort of said to my Lord you'll never be able to go out in the sun again you need to you know close yourself from top to bottom. And I was completely horrified and I was about your goal it's really we call it day with 2 young children. And why because the Son makes it worse. Is that was his opinion right on. I mean nobody is and there are a lot different opinions but if you go in the sun actually it can create more pigmentation and it's one of those we condition but it's just. There's no explanation for it. Basically the pigmentation so cells but in your body are destroying themselves. And does it spread or is it. Related in this area it can I mean there are 2 or 3 types of it play sometimes you have kind of a marriage effect so if it's want to risk your body if it's someone no meant to be on the all the wrong I'm sorry to pick. On the wrong. With me it's it's very random Ok. And does it come and go through to varying degrees or is it ever bright once it appears that once it's it's that and that those there is kind increased and I say Ok. Is there any payment time stories is it purely just the different pigment causes a different look to the skin Yeah there's no time but there's a there's a psychological cry sure let's come on to how how has that affected you well I mean for starters my profession I'm a fitness instructor said My body is on show yeah. And I was acutely embarrassed I was worried about how people were going to charge me. Which sounds reading writing. I just didn't know how to deal with the whole so I started to try to find solutions to camouflage. You know it doesn't sound anything that actually sounds perfectly normal I think everybody would be worried about how other people perceive them and judge them as a result of this changing appearance as you've said and it is unusual so I wouldn't I wouldn't I wouldn't worry about sounding very new down to tall I think everybody would can relate to that to a degree otherwise why would we brush our hair in the morning if we genuinely Yeah I'm about what the people think we look like then you just simply Yeah any attention to your appearance at all. So how did you manage that in the end because of you said you're in your work environment you're running about in shorts and t. Shirts and goodness knows what. Yeah exactly. I think I kind of went through a stage of thinking oh what the hell you know that if anybody judges made that's their problem. That perception. Note is that it directly kind of highlighted it to me or also to me about it I think I would have found that quite challenging to deal with but you know secretly somebody noticed it yes but they're just being polite by not saying anything about and probably see it flashed through their eyes if they're looking at you can you write Audie language and you you know they're thinking about it well they're not saying it you know it's that you know as path right down to go I know exactly what you're talking about. And in that moment does that how does that make you feel when you registered somebody is thinking about it but there's nothing in it thing that makes me feel embarrassed. It makes me so. And very. Self-conscious Ok yes I do still feel that way now if you come to terms with it more and I mean it's difficult talking to you about it and I was in 2 minds as to whether to call you but I think what. Superseded that was to try and reach out to all those that might be suffering. And so what I have found the it is very very recently I was divorced about 5 years ago and I mention men and I was disguising a lot of ways it's all my hands as well so I kind of self whatever and later came out and said to me Oh yes I noticed that on the 1st night and I thought to change he said Yes I love your hands and I said What do you mean he said oh they're just so peaceful and I just so I can understand you posted is a double you know what we. Are going through with all your troubles that right now . But this is you know you become unique though you know I mean you're not just one probably all sorts of wonderful different colors and. It makes you quite crumbly humble So I think. And I think the fact that he was very accepting and doesn't doesn't blink an eye it's interesting because you're a fitness instructor I know that about fitness but of course one of the wonderful byproducts of being face is that you are both body confident on you in what you're wearing and how you walk your muscles are active and well you know yeah you know you've got a lot of lot of that going for you because crucially if your skin is causing you you issues in that way then it's going to undermine that body comfort make Zack clay 'd exactly but I think well I mean there's a very. Respectfully I can't remember one night. But there's a very beautiful same a catwalk model and she's a black model and she's. With. Me like well Ok thank you I mean she's absolutely stunning and when you see that. You know they're even daring and kind of makes you feel better. I think it's just about I'd like people to be able to not judge it's like you know because it's if it's on your hands or your face which you're exposed all the time yes. You worry you know it's a simple thing like you know paying for something and somebody giving you change you just think all they look me over was that I think Oh. You know what I mean yeah I'm so glad I'm so glad you decided to call Kristen because I don't know how many people out there will be relating to what you're saying in some degree or another but I know there are many and I'm grateful for you picking up the phone and being brave enough to do I thank you I write 107312000 is the number to call a quick reminder that 8 fire engines currently in around 60 firefighters been called to fire a flat on Star street in Paddington part of a basement flat in a 3 story building it's a light currently the brigade was called about 20 past 5 the ceiling fire crews from Paddington used in Kensington North Kensington and surrounding fire stations are at the scene and it's not yet known what the cause of the fire is but we'll keep an eye on things there and if you're in the vicinity do let us know what you can see right let's take another call now he's a 1st time caller from Wimbledon tonight and joins me on the line have a nicki Hi Hello thank you for the call tell me your story. So. I was. Listening to the b.b.c. Wesley's talking about mental health issues skin condition. And I was really interested in including because of my experience with eczema and childhood eczema which is quite. Philip ating as a physical condition but also sort of psychosocial condition as well sir tell me about your water huge this this 1st occurred in urine and how Bibles it so it was really from childhood from being a baby I've always sort of know you know myself having Xmas think it's. A topic which means it runs in family as well. But since then having done a lot of research on a bus found you know x. And a lot of skin conditions can be brought home by things like stress and diet and general you know wellbeing as well so. Obviously my most had something to do with genetics but I think it was also exasperated by environmental factors. Being allergic to environmental factors but also. Maybe it is getting worse with things like stress over the past. I think yeah it was very very painful very you know I was in a lot of discomfort so as I said there's a lot of physical. Problems with having x. And with each and a lot to comes around that but also you know as a child you don't realize how you know the emotional impact that it has only a. As. I think even on your identity your personality. And I think it has quite a detrimental effect on your psychological well being actually in what way do you think I just think obviously you know when he is skinny to us about if your skin is the biggest organ it organ of expression it's how people see it sort of which you know it's an organ which causes there's no difference and if you look different which you do Few have any sort of skin condition you can't you can put as much makeup as you like get high to help fight it but you can't you know run away from it and it is visible so what happens is that people who judge. You feel stigmatised you feel different you know. And that's true that's very true school isn't it when you're in the p.c. Changing rooms and somebody just happens to say something then the whole class rounds on your and suddenly all the names are starting to get called and it can be it can be can be a horrible experience of course and. So what did I mean you're grown up now you have. Learnt to manage this condition in your own way so tell me how you've grown to cope with it. Well I mean I went on to kind of understand it because it has caught I think you know probably longer life psychological issues but I went on to study. Master's in psychology and I studied visible difference in skin conditions in more detail and I did some research talk to people about how you know their experience their lived experience which not only affected them but a lot and reported like me where their experiences with different conclusions from that are like go to acne. Just prices affected them but also their families and people around them. And I think support was the main thing that came out as a kind of healing factor but support mental health support was the biggest thing that people talked about and I think that was something that I realized that I needed more of than anything else and where I go to seek that. I mean I was lucky enough to find practitioners that helped me you know throughout my sort of twenty's and thirty's I was sort of you know. I'd sort of the X.-Men gone but the mental emotional scars don't leave you so in my case the x. Men the physical kind of condition went away when I was such if in my late teens early twenty's but as I said the emotional scars they can stay with people can then u.d.a. . So I think there's a lot of I know that the British can Foundation people like organizations there are moves in isolation even mind understand you know skin I don't taste take my judgment of big things machinist's I take the moment we're on a learning curve with our way in terms of growing to to truly accept the status of the nation on mental health and the causes of it where are we on that curve do you think very much near the bottom still low or have we made some decent progress here I think there are I mean I think we haven't made as much progress we can do actually experienced maybe a I think sometimes I read things not cause that just seemed fired Ciena It's almost like. We should be talking about this let's let's do an article on it but there are you know people like Nicola Rumsey bystanders southwest of England they doing a lot of work around the psychology of the Parent people like Linda Papadopoulos she's quite a well known psychologist and she's written a book on psycho terminology in the understood how important live but there hasn't been a lot of research around it and I think there's a lot more today not just on. Skin conditions but looking different and you know looking different in different shapes and shapes and color or not even just different but just not what you want to look like you know I mean that's the thing because you look how you look during that might have or might have a medical reason why you look that way it may just be your d.n.a. . So you look how you look and if there's nothing you can do to change that they're going to accept that is one of I think one of the big big lessons in life isn't it because there's probably something about all of us as individuals that we quite like to change about ourselves. But actually kind of just have to get your head around looking that way but when it's something in your case as you say
