Radio Manchester travel update the very latest on the traffic and travel for the Sunday morning here. Good morning and it is a good morning on the rights to you if you are planning a journey today it is very quiet right now but it is pretty early for Sunday morning of course I would expect it to be quiet and no problems into Manchester and no she's on the motorway network and I have been I when I close on the M 6 it looks like things are running well at the moment between crazy and some underachieving on the yapper a chance but now what today likely engineering works will disappear on the trains but also on the charms set because of ongoing works this weekend there is nothing running between Ashton and the line and Danes Castle failed but there should be a replacement buses to get you where you need to be piece by anything then you can always give us a cool 181-619-9369 show. Shelf B.B.C. lead player A. Leg a half minutes past 7 for this Sunday morning Mike shaft wishing you a very very good morning a very warm welcome to some a breakfast now the diocese of salt that is working together with charities to support those affected by 6 year old violence healing through community was launched this week and the Bishop of sulphur The Right Reverend John on old told B.B.C. Radio Manchester is Rebecca Kelly it's been in preparation for some time we've now been working together for about 18 months to prepare this project which we hope will be a benefit to survivors of abuse there already charities out there who are providing us the pull What is it going to add to help these charities working together well I think it's the just a sense of collaboration and the recognition that survivors of abuse have very different needs and it's important that we provide a comprehensive service so that each survivor can recognise their room needs and find the resources that they need in what we're offering together how does faith play a part in this well we know to a shame that there has been abuse in the church very often those who have survived that abuse are strong in the sense of faith some. Are revolted by the whole conditions in which they were abused and the church is not always the best agent to be offering this is dence that they need so if it's possible for a survivor of abuse to have help offered that is not connected directly with the church that big benefit to them also there are other people not in the church who would be helped I think by the association with a sense of faith in the healing that they need in their lives since the new Nolan report in the company's report we've done so much better in terms of safeguarding procedures to keep children and vulnerable adults safe we've come down to a much clearer procedure when an allegation is made and how we contact with statutory authorities but this is filling what has been a gap helping those who have been abused in the past who are damaged and who feel well that's fine but we're doing things for the future but what about us because we're suffering now Mike Devlin's the safeguarding commission chair for the Diocese of sulphur delighted to say he joins me on the line now very good morning good morning my funk so such a so full start to the day for Rick Astley I know you had it in him but I know it's a big part of your life thankfully for the music over all the years we dig out the good ones listen back to see you're already working with survivors of abuse how will this project work practically. Well. Could I give a little bit of background to that yes please. I've been involved in the solve the traffic safeguarding commission for about 15 years now. And one of the things which trust troubled me and troubled me early days was we responded to allegations of. Abuse in a can make quite a systematic way and we did trying office support to people who asked for it but I became became aware that if people had been abused within the church perhaps the church wasn't the right place for them to be offered therapy and support sue for about 7 or 8 years now. I've been working with our coordinator to look for partners who can provide expert help for survivors of abuse and it's over the last 18 months of so that we've put together this project so that anybody who's been affected or hurt by abuse within a church setting. Can either refer themselves to the the sulphide safeguarding commission and we will refer them on to survivors Manchester or Manchester rape crisis center all they can go straight to those organizations both of them very well established and highly respected charities in Manchester so it's a way of the church acknowledging the hurt the people have suffered the need not simply to have a proper investigation and a systematic procedural response but that they need psychological and emotional support to be listened to and to help if possible to rebuild their lives and rebuild trust not in necessarily in the Catholic Church but trust in those around them so it's a it's been quite a long time in the. In the making of A if and where very very proud to to be able to announce this project is up and running how can those listening now who might want to access they support get in touch Well 1st of all they can go to the websites of the sulfa Catholic safeguarding commission of survivors Manchester or the Manchester rape crisis center m l find the phone numbers and the details of the project all they can make a phone call on the phone numbers are on the websites are trying to give you the phone numbers but I'm conscious we've got less limited time a final question will this change the way the church deals with safeguarding issues . Well it won't it won't change the way in which we respond to allegations of abuse but I think that it represents an evolution of the way that the church is seeing say. Coding I'll explain what I mean by that if I can. Rather than simply responding to individual allegations or individual reports and thinking that we can just single our tyrants as being unusual instance or of an unusual example in an otherwise genuinely good system the church like many institutions is arc sceptic that if these things have happened within the body of the church then it's not enough to just. Put a sticking plaster to reach individual artists and it's important to realize that this thing which affects the whole of the church in front as we've seen recently it's affecting many institutions and societies a whole lot is why we're having a national inquiry to look at our souls and not just to treat a symptom but to try and treat the cools so the church is in chewed or trying to be one step ahead of being told what to do and is trying to deal with this this itself and to to bring its procedures and practices up to date and have a purpose Mike Devlin safeguarding commission for the Diocese of sulfa can I thank you very much indeed for taking time to be with us this one Q Mike thank you for giving us the time of our best.
