Hello welcome to folk scene our 1st of the new year so. I think that we daily new release is today to tickets a spuds for the next few months 1st off I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear about this is that the transports album is going to finally be released on the 12th of this month this is this acclaimed new production of peace a Balinese great legacy the transports are member of getting out way back in the late 1970 s. On a double album of think it was on it's been redone with a stellar cast it's going to be a landmark album for the new year and actually you know this one new song The fuse is very very well with the Bellamy originals very moving very much to claim dawn on its panned by the youngun since songwriter Cooney Take a listen to this. Now I was done. With. The same. Goal since. All. We could. Smokeless. Of will say. We swear. A kid. Waltz. A. Son. Comes here Chad must run sag said they. One. Stock. I know now. I often find peace like. The stuff. This. Show you love it. Police. Are all the same. Tree. It's not. The say. The say. Foley's the same. A. Todd was from a. Car. A. Fantastic just great a great song Dark Water a modern migration tale actually running alongside the older narrative of the transports and it's being captured on a new line of album on the album is to be released on the 12th of this month's us the transports a tale of exile a migration and so alongside Pete Bellamy's great great landmark narrative really from the 1970 s. You know one of the most revered works on the folk scene we have this marvelous song from Shaun Cooney about a guy called Madame actually from Syria and any fled his home country following the disappearance of his brother and he took the drastic decision Believe it or not to swim the a g. And c. And he survived unbelievable and I think that fits in so well it's an amazing folks week anyway I'm sure you know that extraordinary richness loads of All righty there's almost really suppose you could say no weak link or substandard number on the whole album there never was in the 1970 s. And the still isn't now modest great ensemble success from about 12 months or so ago it's now on a landmark our own that's the transports a tale of exile the migration stellar cast live you can't beat it he's a guy who's got an armada never heard of him before actually by the name is Sam Ryder The album is called Too hot to sleep it's not out until the early February but I was very taken with a take a listen to this one I've I've. Lovely stuff some rider too hot to sleep is the album and the track from the album is called Swamp dog obl I've never heard of him before but actually had heard of a couple of the artists he's associated with the Punch Brothers for example I've come across in the Go rodeo sessions Also I've come across here and there on the travels Anyway he's built up a cult following lead in regular midnight Saturday sounds really good to me but one of the oldest dive bars in Brooklyn That'll do for me if Concorde was going now you know don't take a couple of hours and get over to Brooklyn and go to one of the oldest dives in Brooklyn and listen to some fantastic accordion and hootenanny playing from Sam rider like that very much is a good album to really interesting variation of stuff lots of different styles and genres that he's playing around with even a little bit of jazz on their reserves a lot of kind of Billy Strayhorn style jazz playing as well and really good stuff some rider The album is called Too hot to sleep on the release date is February the 3rd and that was swamp dog hobble probably played a couple of extra tracks and out of the next few weeks I'll be bound I was very excited to get a notification just before Christmas actually that stick in the whale of a new album out and that's release state is scheduled for the 26th of January this month Britain's most exciting new folk band according to many people are certainly rich in all kinds of attitude the very uncompromising and apparently the record has really started to get some very good reviews I certainly think the sound of a brand new album from I think the 2nd album is called Follow them true by the way the album title follow them true really lots of vitality going around a new record pass a lot of preconceptions around. What folk music is supposed to be in inverted commas and I think they kind of bring. Suppose you could say a kind of a beating heart back to us if you know what I mean they bring a lot of feeling a movement back to traditional culture that great for a project that they embarked on by recoding people in situ is want to one of the greats compilation albums of Backus 2000 to 16 into 17 this is their own album now on this this occasion headed by single Nicholas Carey and guitarist producer a co-author very very nice stuff indeed stick in the whale The album's called Follow them true and this is their version of the great old traditional song usually associated with. The soul plays that we talked about so much last year around about the end of October you know the dead horse somebody and all of the rest of it this is poor old boss. Man who. I knew Lisa. And the. Nice sound man. Swell. Feet dollars who Chinese on. T.v. Feed lives will ride him. I'm on firm ground to not believe legalese is. Such. A fad. Now that mom fees. Some cats use one on. Top use one hand look to ground. And drag you. To one kind Sowerby you some. Have some clue. Also in town for the silences you see. These days it isn't now when. We say. And we are well known. We use Sierra's talents his Salles silently. On the on it was she to Mike. When no I still had a minute down to. Draw up a main the ocean. I thought Sajjad the album and sound and he said. And now and then I. Will sing came down with a long long are all in his. Body and the devil 2. As great stuff stick in the whale and poor old horse soon as a shanty really on that particular occasion and that's from Nate brand new album follow them through released on the 26th of January authentic as it comes really very very honest it grabs you loss of sort of feel hot as I mentioned before of the century traditional culture as well the very interested on the album in rituals actually they're examining rituals and cycles on you know human beings inherent see and being able to change yourselves through the seasons etc etc ghosts death all accounted thing really interesting pilot there for them if they expand their sound right across the very very interesting you'll also be pleased to note that they're coming to the area in March now make a note of this because they're an excellent time to face on the 4th of March they're at the music. In the film only call so that stick in the whale Liverpool fell music room on the 4th of March and for those of you on the outskirts so maybe in North Manchester they're at the mats Embury if you haven't been to the mass embarrass the smashing venue really lovely venue on the berry on the 10th of March is well there's a couple for your diary they're really good really authentic as they come actually a times a brutally honest as well which you know can be a shock to the A's and in particular I want to track they day they do a great rendition of Unquiet Grave on this particular album and it's a real shock to the Israeli in many respects that's great stick in the way a new album follow them true out at the end of the month isn't all that almost released in January 2 this is very different We've played a truck or 2 by this law before they're called Callia on his comment on what soulful folk in a way and there's a brand new album called Building on the land from down in Cannes and this is a really really interesting album Take a listen to this r. Kelly or. That's very different business as our carrier and for all and which is the opening track from their brand new album building on the land and that's released this month to be looking forward to is actually a played a couple of tracks from them before over the last 6 to 9 months or so I'd seen them on the road here and they were supported Scott Mathews big fan of also saw them when I watched the band were touring about 9 months ago and they were on with Matty prior to and I thought they were pretty tasty really the Down From can somewhere in the valleys of canned you know and and I just think that's so west coast those of you out there who know me well you know on the stand my tastes live very much you must Coast American psychedelia and accounts from post psychedelia bands like fire fall and Poco and all look at it very much along those sort of lines I think very nice very tasteful lovely lovely harmonies on it and that's the as they say the state the still full folk trio on Kenya or Kelly good stuff that I'm going to play most of from them to our Callia the album's building on the land and that was the opening track for all and again something completely to contrast that now I'm very pleased to hear that made from a cannon has a brand new album out and that's going to be released on the 2nd day of February in a few weeks time contemporary Gallic singer she is a 3rd studio album and it's I just love her voice is called Story s t r I's a collection of songs in Gallic and in English based on themes of things like work in exile and struggle but all from a woman's perspective in and straight I think means something like struggle or hardship or something like that speaker and the original idea of the of Mr revisit songs that she particularly loved especially walking songs that cause walking songs are very very important parts of the Scottish tradition on this. By women in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland Hardy tough women went in those days and I picked a truck from the album which I think you'll enjoy this is something called the head grin it sounds and skull can thank goodness and I just think it's a lovely song beautifully song Take a listen to this this is made McKinnon. Me It can carry came back I think. It can find a gang Yeah I. Mean on the can they. Did it. Grace the dulcet of Tintin Abbey elations of May from a canon a great singer a great contemporary Galaxian I'm a mechanic actually if you watched b.b.c. Albert occasionally you know you'll find maybe on the telly there are some great music shows you know on b.b.c. Alba I don't speak Alec I wish I did actually but doesn't really matter because the stories in the melodies and the rhythms for me in Gallic music convey so much anyway really and that's from a brand new album story which is released on Friday the 2nd of February fabulous stuff that and story also FISA features contributions from all sorts of musical luminaries like Kathleen McInnis and Martin O'Neill Allie Horton played a lot of stuff on the shoot Anderson we know Jolliffe as well don't we Ross Martin some really really good featured artists on that and it's really super fantastic on the track is gold counts way and that means the head of the Gwinnett sounds fabulous stuff may have McKenna lovely stuff. Well in case you wonder where all of this great stuff coming from you're listening to the 1st show of 2018 that's right a nice folk scene with me Mike broken here on b.b.c. Radio Massey side and you might or might or not know that actually folksiness very quickly approaching its 50th birthday the program how to few pilots before the turn of the year 1967 it's in 1968 but officially rarely folk scene was launched within a couple of weeks of of this the anniversary of this program as well Amazing Randi when you think about is the long continuous program on the b.b.c. And specialist music has been on for ever really it seems like forever anyway and I remember listening to it when I was when I was 16 and we're getting gas lack in Old Swan go out and get me sausage roll from Reese's or say is on the other side of the Swan and sit and listen to the repeats of folksy and Saturday so now I'm ave to present today is that it's not a poison chalice soul is it really good that's your stance I think it's really good myself it's an absolute privilege to be with you great stuff Ok well from May have MacKinnon new release coming out in a month or to is one actually came out a month or so ago but I missed it actually played this thought it was good put it to one side and then just forgot where it put it really and it's by a band called sad the maiden and said the maiden are an interesting outfit rarely the trio that a vote of for a lot of great artists including a full English and Jim Mari a false light as well which is James Bond fare for convention car a Dylan so they've been on a lot live but I'd never really come across anything recorded by them until the album that came to make cold is health and it's really really nice well engineered beautifully mix produced at home actually features people Chris Cleverley banjo Lucas Drinkwater on bass and the Elliot on backing vocals on a really like the way the girl's voice is blends together I think it's really good see what you think about this this came out towards the back end of last year and it's from the album here's a health by said the maiden and this is their version of the bunny or the Monterey . Where have you be they have so. We. Analyzed him. He he. And he played. Well as a fly. Oh he's lazy we look all over. To. Eat. We. Don't like. The. Buffalo beige just. Was. An asset and. Me I don't need him mon. Greedy. A separate version of the l. Of memory by sat the maiden about an album and an e. Play out of the garden a play since I'm a year or so ago played a track or 2 from it I think was called maids in Mariners' or something like that and the had quite a lot of critical acclaim at the time and they're on the road a lot as a sign I've seen them actually a couple of times now I've seen them with Jim Mari false lights as well they've supported they've also been with the fisherman's friends I have seen that but I know they're very very popular shanty pond from the West Country and they were also honored to join legend you know like Dave swab expand on the successful tours things back in 2014 I think but they're an interesting and faith is just distill Elizabeth and Kathy Pilkington 3 friends who discovered a love of folk music and they spent the school years together singing songs very interesting stuff said the maiden The album's called Here's a health and that was their version very very sweet and pure version of the Bonnie Alomari which is a good thing good stuff said the maid who read from your office has got another album out and it's out very shortly Here's the title track from it. Like the Hammond organ in the world knew this regimen Orsa could only be regimen ORUs a great friend of this program and a great friend of the area actually and you might recall that he started a project a while ago something like 18 months ago to release a solo trilogy of albums the 1st Tom came out was called December which we played almost all of the album in its entirety I think Bit by bit that was then followed by far away people on this a new release out in February now called Songs about a train I mean that's a great title ready for that particular track because it's such a good country song. It's a country song isn't it and it's great because it's a country song the song is actually called letting go but it's that it's the opening track of a really interesting album in the final album of his trilogy and he's going on the road and always tries to do each playing in our area and on the 11th of February. As the 11th of February he's at the Raven folk club in Lower Bridge Street in Chester your Moscow in Siraj if you haven't seen Reggie is just outstanding are being following his career for so many years now I remember reds when he was in the Hank Wang food band years and years and years ago and I booked the hankering for the band when we did a Bob Dylan conference at the Bluecoat I know Mikko 2 was with me at the time we can to your guys also gather and also the Left Banke were on as well which is really interesting but what we found out that was that the way that the one for it worked so well that even was because of edge me or us really read was the key to the whole band and since the time of followed his career which has just gone from strength to strength railing and his new album is out some time early week a fairly 1st weekend in February the tour is taken him all over the place is actually is actually taken him to a great venue it's the venue called the old cinema launderette in Durham that's a good one is that I want to just see what that looks like really but certainly it's coming to the Raven folk club great club upstairs at the Raven folk club down in the pub in the burn billet in the Lower Bridge Street in Chester don't miss that one great really really good and it just goes to strength to strength read me a loss and letting go from the album Songs about a train really interesting stuff that I do like that he's something else that you might fancy. But. Him. I'm the 1st. To. Come. Look at you. Come come. Through the. Little. Commandant. Through the air on the. So we motored longer way said album from it actually and it's called small brown. So we will food small brown bears and it's going to released on the 19th of this month actually American songwriter now living in the north of England a very charming performer John if you come across so it's all very interesting story driven song rice in a very own labored vocal style as well she's great live lovely little banjo playing nap on a plate her take on the red clay Ramblers sea shanty the queen the sky did you notice I don't if you know the red clay around us but I was always a big fan of the I but she writes some good stuff too actually she even does a version of McCartney's help and so she's very useful as a performer excellent gather of information and then gives it over to us she's pulled a great song actually I think it's on this particular album is a sort of do it a while ago anyway it's called or the president sang Amazing Grace and his family a very interesting one tells the story of the 2015 church shootings in Charleston and President Obama's eulogy for those slain which was just you know really really heartfelt I thought and she's a very very good take on the particular song she's also collaborated on this album with the great English fiddler man that is Tom Kitching who's based in Cheshire of course he's a member of pilgrims way too and I just think it's a fantastic album you should really try and catch it if you can you might be able to catch Zoe actually because she's back on the road playing quite a lot of folk clubs over the next month or so and in our area at least. Close to our area on the 19th around about the time this is the album gets released in actual fact she's at the Northwich folk club and if you've not been to the northeast for it said really nice club also a little bit further on she's coming back into the northwest of England on the 12th of April she's going to be at the lim folk club as well I do recommend that you catch though she's very very good really really gentle in the last 2 infectiously danceable and meaningful and she's got all of the ingredients of an American folk singer in actual fact good stuff that Zoe Mulford The album's called small brown birds and it's released this month actually on the 19th of January isn't all the really really interesting saying at this time from over the water in West carry an island as rain the ama and she had an album release just towards the back end of November again which I hang held onto to be perfectly honest because I was playing this autonomy and cd player and I thought it introduced this year she's a lovely lovely beautiful voice she's been singing for a long time now and here's have of Johnny is gone from a show a soldier from have brand new album foxglove fuchsia. Was there Don. Who could. And. Would turn. Down. Come o
