Heading towards the Bank Holiday weekend lots of people will be out enjoying the hopefully good why have you never know when quick thinking might save the day so do you know your 1st paid ever he ever had to use it no 160423 double for double. And we're super excited on the lunchtime programme we are big big fans on this team and it is back on our telly box is. Last year's final was the most watched t.v. Program of the year so what makes such an old fashion show so popular cool no 160423 double board double 5 text 81 triple 3 and still unsure message with normal email Northampton dull none shut b.b.c. Dog How do you get a handle a b b.b.c. Radio in Atlanta. So have you ever had to use 1st aid training it's a vital skill isn't it but one the not all of us have should we be trying to give c.p.r. Perhaps one know how to deal with the serious burn and you Farai is from the British Red Cross Hi Andrea. I haven't it is one of those things that we should at least be aware of how to do certain things. It says I mean certainly with a brochure across would encourage everybody to have some 1st aid knowledge either learning on one of our courses doing a face to face learning opportunity or. Going to our Web site and doing some distance learning in terms of learning through our videos and stayed up song on telephones what sort of things can you learn from a distance and all of that. Just a vast majority the basics of it and the Seri behind it and certainly a lot of our learning materials about encouraging people to have the willingness and the confidence to act in the merchant say because very often enough the barrier people think it is complicated people worried that there might get it wrong they might do more harm than good when in actual fact a very simple intervention can make all the difference between life and death in some cases. And you can learn a very simple basics by certainly by going online. Download in the Red Cross our ponchos on your phone both 1st state in in towards children and adults all more importantly coming on I face to face cost to ship a cross receiver across from throughout the country and then the cost to come on your course. Some do some don't it depends we provide a variety of 1st aid training and learning experiences for a variety of people across the country and from different sectors of the community is obviously we did a traditional 1st aid at work and many many of your listeners will have done a course that work for looking after the people in there and their workplace but we also run the courses for the public for leisure for their own interest which obviously run outside of work hours sort of the evenings weekends etc and then also we have our crisis education so looking after people who were in the community where there is an increased likely that they will need a 1st Aid intervention may be because they caring for dementia patients and there's a higher risk of choking all that may be a higher risk of for was an injuries resulting from that and the pricing and whether that opportunity is available to the to the end user is no cost depends on the circumstance of those applying to go on a course should we all have 1st aid training shipping may be part of who quickly empty think. Certainly the British Red Cross would encourage it to be part of the national curriculum but ideally what we would like we as an organization is for everybody to have at least some basic knowledge of what to do in an emergency we never know we're going to need it. And it should be really almost a life skill and that's how we would like it to be I mean in reality Andrew you are never going to need those skills are you because it's very rare that somebody would have to put them into practice. That's not actually true if you think that most of your listeners at some point will of the selves Durance and cooking etc in the in the kitchen or high somebody will have cooked themselves doing some marketing v.t.r. That you know typically with it becoming a turbine collar day there's lots of d.i.y. Activity I'm sure going to take place so there's lots of things that can possibly happen just slips trips and falls over you know equipment around the house also you know the children could have from school and dropping their bags at such and people tripping over them so actually this is probably more likely than me you believe it's big and then it's thinking about what do I do when it's happened you see that's really interesting isn't it because I didn't think of it like that I thought of you know being out on the street seen somebody fall down in front of me having some massive heart attack kind of 1st aid that's not likely to happen but the the everyday stuff of course you should know how to deal with it absolutely and believe it or not research will show you more likely to help a friend or relative than a complete stranger. Having been in the position where I've had to give c.p.r. And it's not. I don't want to say it's not the easiest thing to do but if you feel like you're intruding almost We have to get over that British reserve as well that way we do have to get over that which is and that's why we certainly encourage in our training courses to look at the barriers and the willingness and the confidence of the individual to actually help in an emergency situation yes you know c.p.r. Is a very invasive procedure but also it's a it's it's about the fact that you we can help we can help each other. And what we would like to do is encourage people to think about fire that anybody can carry a humanitarian act. We can help and we would want to encourage people to do that and one of you had to use your so I'm assuming you are 1st take training to happen to be helpful either. One of you had to use your training. From from a personal point of view you know I've got 3 children are taught to use 1st aid on more than one occasion with their you know slips trips falls that such as to the children but also caring for elderly relatives. In terms of you know. Friends and relatives suffering from dementia like I say choking or even slipping in trip in for an over mats and things in the house. But obviously from an organizational point of view using 1st aid is and educating people in 1st aid is probably what I do. You know from a personal point of view like a sign and that's no different to anybody else 1st aid we probably do it without even thinking that we're doing it in actual fact yes of course and I guess is well it's one of those things that you need to keep up to date with isn't it because from time to time. The advice does change. It does from time to time but the basics of it all doesn't necessarily change and you know it's also a state knowledge that people have is relevant and it goes back to our source saying it earlier it's about people having the willingness to do something to act in other words didn't say and you know it may not be absolute current practice but it's better having that knowledge to be able to act in the 1st place which is important Thanks very much t.v. Time and from the British Red Cross 160423 double 4 double 5 perhaps you had 1st aid skills that you got or perhaps somebody used their 1st aid skills on you have they be really interested to hear the story you can text me as our text North space your message send it to 813 double 3 she's a woman who from a very early age knew that she was different in post-war Britain she experienced life in what many would call disgraceful circumstances being expelled from school keeping a brothel in France and appearing in numerous court cases grit and that's not the half of it she fought and still fights for the safety of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip when she finally decided to write a story she saw written after Rick thrown in her way to prevent her from publishing which just spurred her on to go ahead anyway and she crusades for the freedom of speech my guest on the plantation life stories this month will be the remarkable Janis Hetherington for an hour we'll tell her story and play some of the music which is a company on what is by anyone's reckoning a unique journey Northamptonshire life stories with John grit from 3 on Tuesday b.b.c. Radio Northampton. I'll be really interesting hearing her story with John next week . I'm just watching a trailer for the casualty episode that marks its 30th anniversary it looks like it's going to be a real drama if you know what I mean it looks like it's going to be very exciting I think casualty for quite some time and have to watch that episode I was in an episode of casualty once I was there I was in said casualty once I was in the background. They were doing something about. It was animal testing I think it was not all testing the party at my university was used as kind of the facility and we were just wondering about round in the background we got 20 quid was worth when you were a student Anyway that was many many as couple 30 of anniversaries are coming up soon and we're excited about tonight's television the Great British Bake Off returns tonight it seems to get better every year doesn't it the merchandise already in the shops and we're already hearing about the what happened in this series it's also goodies and all. On Twitter if you tweet the hash tag you get a little tent next to it's all right so I think remember castigate the ice cream that ended up in the bin we get look forward to cake week Bread week on The Amazing show stoppers as well we'll be watching tonight what is it you love about The Great British Bake Off What is it that makes such an old fashion show so popular this. Area. Power of Love from here we lose the news on b.b.c. Radio from to 20 past 12 we're talking about 1st they were talking about safety and some sad news just coming in from Devon and Cornwall Police that the 2 year old girl who was in hospital in Bristol having been swept into the sea at new key on Friday 19th sadly died last night police have named her as McKayla Brown Yes the man who also died as a result of the instance has been named by police as Rudi brainiest McHale's father his wife and Mikael his mother listen that Brian yes has made a statement saying Woody was a loving caring and supportive husband father and friend had a great sense of humor was an active person he always put other people 1st McKayla was a busy bee and always happy I mean disbelief at what has happened I'm so shocked at how quickly the sea condition changed on that day whilst we were enjoying a family time together in Caldwell I pray that others can learn from our tragedy as I do not wish for any want to go through our grief and the family of 5 run rocks at South Bristol beach and around 520 in the afternoon when 3 of them really listen John McCain are washed into the say by a large wave and we'll be talking to David Walker from Ross but he's the head of leisure safety. A little bit later on in the program one of his speciality is staying safe around the water will get his advice and in place wrong because we're talking about whether your 1st aid training would you know what to do somebody fell ill many workplaces and schools have 1st aid is some even provide 1st aid training and I just wonder if you've ever had to use that 1st aid training here we lived in Russia deny Hillary hire an. Easter volunteer with a son John Yes I volunteered with this enjoy I mean and before I came up to Northamptonshire in half which are what made you decide to do that in the 1st place then I don't really know I think it was just something I wanted just fancied doing something for the community that I was living in and it just seemed like a good idea and I emailed them and I sort of asked them if I could come along and I did and I sort of got trained fought through them and loved it loved meeting the papal love going on the g.t. I just had a great time so what kind of skills do you learn then. Well initially it was obviously just straight 1st aid. So sort of the basic c.p.r. . And what to do with some of the was bleeding or if you for came across a broken bone or something like that and then gradually obviously more and more we ended up by some people got trained on using ambulances and that's often that's changed quite a lot and obviously using disability which obviously now nowadays are difficult is a sort of like quite common place around here and the previous priest nowadays is well known actually because they give you instructions on what to do you know they tell you what to do. And when did you have to do you have to use your skills in any any time I mean we obviously went on to if we were on duty we would possibly use and then when it was basic things like maybe you know if we'd been on a bonfire display you know you might sometimes get people with bits in their eyes from the bone follow we were out one day actually going to a football match and a little boy got knocked down by a car so we were able to use our skills fairing for she wasn't seriously injured but it was sort of injury those things and I've used them over say with my own children you know it's a general knowledge of sort of what to do with some of these bleeding really profusely what to do and sort of things like nose bases and think oh yes I'll put the nose back and I actually don't do the opposite. So it's sort of those things I've used more red really than anything else do you think everybody should have these these skills you can be sure that I think there's no harm in it and they see it isn't it it's not difficult and I think you know you sort of get some so many old wives tales of this is what you do if you've got a nosebleed this is what you do if you do that and if it's just basic sort of things like if you've got a serious bleed you don't keep on taking the plaster of putting a new one on eccentric that are. I think it would be helpful and just so
