Welcome along levees have your company as always the County Council says it's received 3000 online responses so far to its consultation on 10000000 pounds worth of cuts that the authorities in financial trouble as we know and it's looking to cut looking at cutting services like libraries buses and trading standards all Robin Brown councillor Robin Brown is the council's cabinet member for finance He says the still calling for more money from central government we have not got the funding being provided to achieve the standard we wish for with our structure free services hence the reason. We are making cuts cuts I never wanted to see happen but the fact of the matter is we will provide those services to the most vulnerable and not only that we will want to ensure that we go and to banks they understand this cannot go ahead and we should another break for small in the Council of the Met very passionately about the state of finances the County Council there are a series of open events going on around the county for members of the public to go along to find out more this consultation that's going on One is happening today and well and brought people against the cuts we're planning a protest outside our reporter there is when he Gilder Let's speak to him now. Good evening to live in what is the scene there then at the moment Ok Well welcome to a rather damp and surely Willingboro outside the Oxford Street Resource Center there were till recently half a dozen or so people protesting against cuts inside the Oxford Street resource center there are lots of people talking to county councillors and county council officers about some of these cuts now the way this actually works is that inside this building are lots of different table was with displays in front of them laying out in some detail the proposals that go to make up these Tenafly 1000000 pound worth of cuts over a table for trading standards the table for highways as a table for libraries and people are circulating around and talking to county councillors and council officers in I have to say a considerable amount of detail about what is being proposed a tiny bit of love in the proceedings at the moment but there are about 30 people here until 5 minutes ago to load people of left perhaps more becoming this event is open until half past 7 reminder this is at the Oxford Street Oxford Road rather resorts and whatever not all that easy to find look for me most fish bar and it's opposite the Fish Bar Now as I said there were half a dozen or so people outside protesting earlier I spoke to some of them in particular I spoke to vision to man he used to work with library service his name is John Clarke John used to work for library services I did I was made redundant in I think it was 2014 with a group of other professional librarians we waited on in order to save money a cost cutting exercise rather similar to the $1.00 that we're witnessing again so how do you feel about what's being proposed as a restructuring of libraries I think it's going Taleo acceptable the county council has. A statutory requirement to provide a cop what's known as a comprehensive and efficient public library service under the terms of the public library museums act and it is patently failing to protect provide a comprehensive if it closes 21 or 20 or however many libraries it eventually closes it will probably be failing to provide a comprehensive and efficient service but many of those libraries are tiny I mean you look at libraries like St James in North Hampton Abington in North Hampton people who live there are really quite close to the town center No they're not if you look at the demographic if you look at the people who used to make most used of libraries it tends to be parents and carers with young children elderly people they're the most they're the least mobile up sector of the population and they find it they will find it very difficult in the if they rely on their depend on their local library remaining open if you look at the example of library we will be told the county council will say oh well it's not very far as the crow flies. It's not very far as the crow flies but that doesn't factor into the fact into account that there's a busy dual carriageway between the bridge with some rather unpleasant underpasses between them how are the elderly people with limited mobility how are the parents with children in buggies How are they going to get from one library to the other it's not as simple as they have been I think about 2700 online responses to the county council's constellation just about libraries it's a surprisingly large number and not not to me it's not know I mean this statistic nationally is that more people use the public service than for example that go to football matches like the libraries are hugely popular service and vitally important I think that's widely recognised most people even if they don't use libraries as adults have a positive memory been taken to the library as a child and they regard libraries as being a very important hallmarks of civilisation that's what they are you still in touch with former colleagues who now work for my yes I am I rather you reading groups are visually impaired people deliver books to people from from less than 5 alarm. So those folks who work their jobs now and under threat the I gather that the it's the library managers whose posts are most at risk and not only in the library friend with closure but across the board the library managers they do a vitally important job they organize the service from each of the library service points and it's critically important they have those people remain in their posts the quality of the service and we've seen this elsewhere in the country where libraries are being handed over to volunteers the quality of the service will plummet if those people lose their jobs and it's not just when I was made redundant many of the people I was are made and it's that this applied to me as well I was within a year or so of retirement age so in personal terms it didn't matter that much that I was made redundant but most of the staff are paying for redundancy now are younger people people in their twenty's thirty's thirty's and forty's many of them in family responsibilities they do an excellent job they don't get paid that much money they do an excellent job they take a huge satisfaction from the quality of the service that they provide to the public and they've done nothing wrong why should I be threatened with redundancy they're absolutely nothing wrong. Reportedly Gilder the speaker told the demonstrates the day John Clarke in one ability go back to Willie live there so I suppose well you know what the question is what happens next. Well what happens next is obviously this event will happen. Tonight there's another consultation on Thursday at the Patrick road Resource Center in Corby the key thing is that whilst the County Council have announced this 10 half 1000000 pounds worth package of cuts we know almost certainly there are more cuts to come because they're talking about another $27000000.00 pounds or so but they have to take out of the budget now that is all going to depend upon how much support they get from central government I was told by a county council earlier that council leader Heather Smith is today meeting with the junior minister responsible for local government so no doubt she is pleading what happens as case saying we need more cash but earth you know the county council are in a very very difficult position by our saying that unless they take money out now they will have to start cutting into stash the services like social care and Children's Services or them put them in fraud and all the difficult position so what's happening at the moment is they're gathering all the state or from these consultation events and from the on line consultation they will then take some decisions in December and January about what the next year's budget is going to look like but one way or another there's going to be I think quite a lot of pain for rate payers in Northamptonshire Ok thank you very much and they will build our report of the live in when Amber 27000000 pounds worth of cuts to add to the term 1000000 we know about on its way as Willie says difficult this is a very difficult situation for the council I know a lot of people are unhappy when it comes to cutting libraries could have potentially children centers but if you are in charge. They go promotion ahead of. Finance. Northamptonshire County Council where should the cuts come how would you balance the books and one of the kind of things the council should be streamlining on if anything and frontline services as Willie says they're in doubt Social Care adult social care children services all under threat but where should the cuts be made to be good to hear from you when 3 double 3 Start your checks with the word north want to be called want to come on the wireless and have a talk about if a bit of a chit chat about it and maybe discuss it with me 016-0423 double 4 double 5. The b.b.c. Radio north and 17 minutes past 5 now let's go the headlines approach has been taking place in well Imbra the south are known against the county council's proposals to make cuts to services terms and totaling 10000000 pounds as we've just been hearing we will elsewhere a large quantity of dangerous toys are being seized from Christmas markets in well Imbra by Northamptonshire trading standards they'll be on the program in a few minutes elsewhere Kensington Palace has announced the wedding of Prince Harry a Meghan Markle will take place at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle in May and it's for both Alex Waller and Mikey Haywood have signed new contracts with Northampton Saints and in Snoop a catcher in the car and Wilson faces Sean O'Sullivan in round one of the u.k. Championship at the York Bana can tonight and then the headlines. Just trouble for you in a 2nd or 2 but let's take a look at the markets. So the Footsie 100 then Tuesday the 28th of November 27th. The Footsie closed up 76.75 at 7460.65. 7460.65. A pound will buy you one dollars one dollar 32 cents and it will get you one euro 11. So the markets Well we do that at this time every day so we also stay with the world of business as well if you've got a business store story for me by the way you're very welcome to get in touch with us here at b.b.c. Radio Northampton particularly story from the county always very interested in hearing from you if you want to email me it's Carson dot Wishart at b.b.c. Dot co dot u. K. Right let's talk about this then carry on with business you often hear now about the rise in apprenticeships and lots of companies now recruit apprentices and it seems a great alternative to university or college and a Northampton based builders merchants Travis Perkins is no different they currently employ more than 200 apprentices across the business world today some of them are being trained in a pit lane Silverstone sounds fun to me Well Louise power is the company's head of education and learning She's on the line now hello Louise Hello there love pit lane What's all this about sounds great it's been great fun actually so today with staying about 135 apprentices over the next 3 days will be coming in 50 of them today and we've got them really hands on with our products and also kind of being on the receiving end of cost base from some of our regional directors who will actually build merchants a kind of role playing what it's like because most Travis Perkins and what good services like m m or bad service is like as well as being hands on the product and what you have there been today. Tell a key learnings really are what it's like to be customer what the great service being given to these these guys can can really look like but also actually an opportunity to get some of the products because obviously when the selling point that you don't always get a guy to to to use the product like he would have been tiling with happen putting together a cabinet. When you don't experience where you think is going to see change by the way because we mentioned in the introduction university route kids you know they do their levels it seems almost a given right you must go to university in the olden days you know Apprenticeships are big things you think they're coming back Yeah absolutely so it's a guy thing 185 guys that we've got I didn't next few days are actually doing management qualifications an apprenticeship so they don't people that are fresh out of school already punch it still go do offer that but these guys are actually quite experienced in any place to work and some of them started packing some time to enjoy the opportunity to kind of build skills and take it as a cause and
