It's just gone 6 minutes past one good morning this is a whole life for Friday the face of October I'm Lisa McCormick Now coming up in this hour of the program will further delve into the claims that Russian spies have been involved in a series of cyber attacks on the West but probably isn't something that surprises you the way that they were caught quite blatantly is something worthy of a movie and if it wasn't something so serious would probably be quite laughable some of the papers are certainly having fun with their headlines the no brothers know but such as 2 of them will take a look at that in greater detail between noir and also the lasers from Chicago where the jury in the case of Jason van Dyke the police officer who shot dead a black teenager in 2014 is that considered his verdict and you all know the Eastport a massive In fact the just getting even bigger and bigger among the Premier League is joining in on the action what's it all about we're going to speak to a to the hottest tickets in. Sport commentators so a bit later on as our 1st though let's discuss let's turn our eyes to the U.S. Where members of the Senate Judiciary Committee have clashed over the F.B.I.'s reports and allegations of sexual misconduct made against President Trump Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh Democrats have called it a whitewash Republicans may Moggy that this is the 7th background check the F.B.I. Has completed and still find nothing to back up the allegations let's get to our correspondent in Washington Chris buckler Chris this report has been a week in the making in reality you know what could have changed in that time you had the truth is that although this was a report asked for by the Senate you know it was authorized by the White House and it was conducted by the F.B.I. I don't think it was ever going to change any minds if anything I would argue that this report is probably just deepened the divisions that already existed between Democrats and Republicans it was probably pretty easy to predict the Republicans would say that this is not being conducted and that ultimately it said nothing and they have only managed to speak to a lot of people that have come back and said that they did come to cooperate what was suggested about Brett Kavanaugh on the other hand Democrats will say well you haven't spoken to everybody because this was always going to be a limited investigation a limited report or a criminal investigation but simply an extended background check into black governor I suspected this was always going to be our government truthfully if you take a look at what Republicans and Democrats have said today neither are particularly happy with the other but one is still blocking back governor on the other saying he is not the appropriate person to be a Supreme Court justice sure and Chris the Republicans need to swing a couple of votes to get this nomination through do we have any indication that they may have managed to Yeah so basically what's been happening today is that we've had all of these senators shuffling into a room in Congress they've not been given a copy of this report they've had to shuffle inside a room look over each other's shoulders take a look at what's there and then shuffle lawyers and some of go back for a 2nd look because they. I want this to remain as confidential as possible so they're not releasing these reports to anybody so we've been watching carefully what people have say been saying as they've come odds now the key Republicans to watch here are senators Jeff Flake Lisa Murkowski and also Susan Collins and listening to them certain in the cases of senators flick and Collins there does seem to be a suggestion that they aren't saying they are necessarily going to vote for Brett Kavanaugh but there certainly seem to be indicating that they're swaying in that direction on the other hand we're still waiting for more from Senator Murkowski who's from Alaska there's been a lot of pressure on her over this issue but again we are getting the impression from Republicans that they seem to believe they have the votes through in one extra bit of information though that could change all of this vote which could be an interesting one and that's that Senator Steve Dan's who is a Republican he is walking his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day on Saturday and he says frankly if the confirmation vote happens on Saturday he's going to be a woman Montana so unless he gets a plane back very very quickly he might be out of it and he could change the numbers voting right so we want to tell him when this vote is held because it's really they need to set a date surely they need to say it today right well here's here's the way this all works because it's a complicated procedure but basically they got the reports and as soon as they got the report it was or at least headed to the Senate last night a century what happened was was the leader of the Republicans inside the Senate called for a cloture motion this is essentially a guillotine motion now there has to be a complete day left before this comes into effect but they will vote on this cloture motion tomorrow this guillotine motion and that means that there are then 30 hours of the bit left so we expect that's going to happen at about $101030.00 U.S. Time on Friday or today basically and then that will mean that there are 30 hours of debates which can be taken up by anybody you want. Spake but after the 30 hours are up that's it they have to go to vote after that a final vote on black governor so it could be that we get to vote on Saturday and we find out if he will be a Supreme Court justice or C. Right obviously this is one that's got the imagine of a what a nation isn't the right word but it's called the attentions of the American public CHRIS BOWEN both sides the political divide the be much response there since this reports came out I guess I have a name on it includes have my what the whole point is is that they're going from what the senators are saying but at the same time I suspect for a lot of people they've already taken sides and they don't need to know what's inside it if you've been to Capitol Hill today you will have seen protesters who have been there in their hundreds and sometimes they went into Senate buildings in effect effectively occupied Senate buildings they were protesting outside the row a number of people arrested including the actress in the shower who was the team that wins at one stage and they have been very large and very vocal and they are trying to say to the senators listen to us on this but of course Republicans are also listening to what some of their supporters have been saying and President Trump is out in the boats on one of those rallies again he is campaigning extremely hard ahead of the midterm elections and he's in Minnesota speaking as I speak and at the moment he is talking to a group of his furtherance supporters and at one stage they were chanting a short time ago we want Covena so you get the real sense the Democrats and Republicans their supporters are just as divided on this whole issue of Christian I thank you but I suspect we'll talk again very very soon. Chris Buckley there in Washington Russian spies have been accused of involvement in the series of cyber plots across the globe leading the U.S. To level charges against 7 agents the U.S. Justice Department said targets included the global chemical weapons watchdog and the doping agency and also a U.S. Nuclear company as well Russia as you might expect is missed the allegations they've called that western spy mania Benjamin Duncan is the co-founder of the not for profit organization the American cybersecurity Institute Benjamin good morning are Good morning this probably won't this news today may not come as a shock per se but this coordinated action maybe a little bit more widespread maybe people would have thought Kurt. Yeah so many of the actors we've seen on our radar before in fact 3 of the indicted individuals in today's indictments in the D.O.J. They were previously indicted by a special counsel Muller as part of his probe into the 2016 election so these are similar actors. In this cyber space right now is very much a wild wild west. Actors are very vigorously going after various targets you can even see in the current indictment there were it was a concerted effort against how this Anti-Doping Agency is but at the same time they're going after nuclear energy company the organization of prohibition of chemical weapons and other you know chemical laboratories that. One would imagine somehow benefit the Russian state. So this is very much in the vein of what we're seeing it's rampant across industries across targets across purposes and yeah today definitely demonstrated a great example of. The types of attacks that we're seeing I'm happy to go into more detail about what actually happened yeah I'd love a bit more detail Benjamin if you wouldn't mind of course so really there were 2 pieces to the indictment one is the actual hacking that the criminals did the 7 gentleman. Officers of the G.R.U. And then there is a distance from ation campaign that went along with so not to take a step back we saw that Russia had a bone to pick with. The doping agency in the world after they were caught engaging in doping Olympics and then they launched a concerted effort to have some kind of retribution so what they wanted to do is really focus on villages a musician there was no real monetary benefit here there was no kind of national political agenda it was to attack the integrity of the organization something that we saw very similar in 2016 in the U.S. Presidential election so the individuals started with remote attacks you may have heard of phishing campaigns or spearfishing campaign and basically they took emails they would send e-mails to people or organizations like water the world and you don't see that would look very legit they would look and feel like you would expect to see from your bank or from your I.T. Administrator people would quickly these links and were either put in information or would lead to some other kind of compromise. And they would begin their site actually was really interesting in this indictment there was not only remote exploitation as we call it there were these close Access Operations So for example for the O.P.C. W. These criminals were able to successfully fish the organization they couldn't get in remote so they sent a team of 4 operators to another and they literally took tools rented a hotel room next to the organization and set up wireless transceivers to launch their attack so they were focusing very hard on compromise and I want to compromise the organization they then found sensitive documents report anything that could potentially embarrass or cause public discomfort for an organization and then they took to social media to strategically leak Courson that it will seem very very simple a very very basic technique that they use. Absolutely so I think a really important takeaway from this indictment from the 26000 presidential campaign interference indictment Yes nation states have very sophisticated tools at their disposal but they're not going to use them if they can successfully exploited you on the base. And this is a lesson for everybody it's very much about cyber hygiene if you are protecting yourself following generally accepted basic cyber security rules and you're implementing proper controls nothing crazy you know in the community we call in 0 viruses malware that we haven't seen before and are very hard to defend against those are used very infrequent what we see really happening is people not having that basic hygiene in place at a personal level in a corporate level which can lead to these kinds of compromises Yeah then you know I think people are always the weakest link in any kind of security cyber security chain only Absolutely. It's a big issue because it brings together a lot of. Discipline to protect the human element you almost need a psychologist more than you need a technical technical operator because of all the controls in place that you can have if you're still going to peak somebody is curiosity. You're going to have a problem in the law you can only put in so many technical defend it is really a holistic issue that people need to think organizationally psychologically and technically to defend against clearly Benjamin is going to have me this morning thanks very much for talking us through that Benjamin didn't Can the co-founder of the not for profit organization American cybersecurity is to teach and if you're reading any of the papers on Friday you're going to be. Arrayed in this most of the front pages in fact virtually all of them featuring pictures of these Russian spies and various headlines including never chumps the Nova choke brothers never Chuckle Brothers sorry all of the front pages is going to be laid in them 20 minutes past one as we speak the jury is all right in the trial of the sick Aagot police officer Jason Van Dyke he's accused of murdering the black teenager lucky with Donald in 2015 though the incident proved to be a bit of a watershed moment in the city with racial tensions boiling over after video footage of the shooting was released on Chicago may be bracing itself for further trouble when this verdict comes in let's cross live gnawing at Rob Wilbur who's the local station. Senior editor of Criminal Justice also produces the 16 shorts podcast Rob good to speak to the small I'm Thanks for having me on you seem perfectly placed to sort of give us a bit of an overview of what happened here the background of this. Yes So look Juan McDonald was shot actually by police in 2014 and then in 2015 the city Arup the city released video of the shooting and the city oh the city had kept that under wraps for that time and was forced to release it through a lawsuit and there was a lot of outrage once the video was released because the story had been that lukewarm McDonald was attacking officers lunging at them with a knife and when the video came out it show that the Quantock dog was actually walking away from officers he did have a knife it was down at his side and the officer who shot him Jason Vandyke who's now on trial arrived on the scene and 6 seconds after arriving on the scene he shot he started shooting on McDonald and shot him 16 times and I think just one more piece of context here is that in the 7 years prior to this shooting Chicago police had shot $400.00 people not that's not all kids death but they had shot $400.00 people and all of them not a single shooting had been found unjustified So the fact that you have an officer on trial now for this is is really historic It kind of. I think is going to have a big impact on kind of the way the policing or could have an impact on the way police in the city do their jobs but certainly it's had a huge impact on the way people in this city are thinking about policing and use of force. Rule because as you mentioned the jury's been sent to deliver its verdict to alternate members of the jury of being released to we be reading anything into them . You mean by the fact that what those alternate jurors said or just the fact that they've been released that they've been released. You know I th
