On AM and F.M. Around the U.K. On digital and on lied a mirage shot up all night with the Democrats in Washington making good on their election promise to conduct some wide ranging inquiries into the president's affairs their latest effort involves a sweeping request for documents relating to a wide variety of dealings by over 80 people one time or another were close contact with Mr Trump some of the request from a Democratic controlled House Judiciary Committee goes back over ground believed to have been covered by the bowler probe among those asked to cooperate on the president's 2 sons on the son in law a statement from a committee chair Jerrold Nadler lays out an inquiry and possible obstruction of justice corruption and misuse of political campaign from. 1st of Venezuela where the opposition leader one quiet 0 has returned to Caracas defying a government travel by addressing a massive crowd of his supporters Mr quite a called for more demonstrations against President Nicolas Maduro in a speech in Caracas the fire Mr White over said that he and the people of Venezuela will not be intimidated by President but there is regime I mean is that a lot of them watching I mean they threatened all of us here use or it's with prison with death and I say something to them it is not being through persecution it will not be through threats that they are going to stop us here we are we are stronger and more united than ever here we are when much stronger than ever when I think it will die. Well we're joined from Caracas by our correspondent Will Grant Hello Will Hi wrote hi as any sort of a crowd estimates for that rally Well as always when you're in the thick of those crowds it's very very hard to get a proper handle on it but it was only in the thousands I mean it was held at the height of carnival sorry so ready to get anybody out it was actually kind of a phase but it was interesting because he was met at the airport by a large number of people his motorcade was greeted by national paper of course there is a huge number of people in that that square so yeah it was I think was a pretty good 10 and I think a lot of people were simply showing their support because they didn't know that he was actually going to be able to make it in and once word got through that he was going to be actually on a flight coming into the country at the time a lot of people went to the airport to make sure he did actually make it into that as well and this wasn't the original plan was that he was supposed to be coming across the border by law. Well nobody really had a proper handle on exactly on exactly what the plan was and you know those are those are the 2 theories one with that he would just come across by land or kind of make his way into Venezuela and then just appear at this rally and the other was what he ended up doing which is sort of facing off the authorities just walking through immigration on Kenny body else returning to their country and I think the 2nd one the one that he chose to do was probably the P.R. Victory if you like it certainly shows him as you know not worried about this threat of. Arrest and it makes Mr Maduro president mother look look a lot weaker so you know that's clearly why they opted for that that choice I think but if we go back 10 days or so he had a different scenario in mind didn't he had the seed convoy and was very much hoping that somehow the said convoy with him involved would would actually make it all the way to Caracas. Yes Well as early as get into the country where my distributed for 4 it got as far as Caracas but they Yeah and that wasn't a baby that was a very very rare response from and my daughter government trucks were set on night now by the size of blame the other about who exactly did that but certainly a was set on fire and it was a very very sticky situation a number of people lost their lives in both border regions not just the one with Colombia but also the one that Brazil is extremely volatile day and one that could have gotten much much worse much more out of hand after that he then sort of took this regional tool and went to Brazil who is overseeing Colombia and Ecuador and so this met all the presidents there was sort of receiving him as president as as the legitimate president of Venezuela it is quite clearly the image he wants to give We can certainly say he has quite significant support among the region and and of course with the trumpets ministration to an end what about the army are they still on board for Mr Monroe. As it stands I think that the Army leadership yes we've seen some people. And some people join the other side by and large they're sort of low ranking officers or or soldiers. Thus far we haven't really seen anyone at the begin names that sort of high ranking generals or of course the defense minister himself say anything that isn't complete support and loyalty to Mr Madoff does only some other ones to present to the world a sort of united front but you're right to identify the military they are absolutely key to what happens in the coming weeks and months in Venezuela and words that are a big show of security forces today at this rally. No no not at all this was a a. Opposition March there wasn't a military presence that certainly not one that I saw and any security was the sort of normal security that you would expect to see in a Venezuelan opposition situation I mean obviously that that's tight just by its very nature but it's police not not not armies not military character and as and what's the president thinking then about as to maturer strategy as far as Mr Grider was is concerned is he going to leave him at liberty that I think is the thing that all Venezuelans are now watching for you know 1st they wanted to see if Mr way they would actually make it back now that he has what will Mr McDougal's response Bay will it be to as you say just sort of let it slide but then he sort of we can buy that on in one analysis because you know the fact that a mistake why they were left in defiance of a travel ban and then came back in very openly brazenly in front of the television cameras and sort of weakens Mr Meadows position the other choice he has of course is to arrest him for having broken this travel ban and the anger you can imagine it will be caused in Washington in Brazil and other nations that is sympathetic to Mr white it would be significant not to mention the sheer number of Venezuelans who support Mr why those who would take to the streets so it is a bit of a tense situation a tight scenario that Mr Madoff finds himself in and Venezuela is sort of caught in the middle of things as often the case looks like that they could get much worse before they improve and certainly if any action is taken against Mr quite you know by by Mr Madoff government I think that will cause a very very strong reaction both nationally and internationally will grant in Caracas sex very much Will. Well let's join an of an ass who is the New York Times correspondent in Caracas and she's been covering the the situation there for quite some time hello. Thanks for having me thank you for coming to talk to us Well let's pick up on the on what well was talking about there I mean where do the the sympathies of people in the security forces line this moment. Well it's really really hard to say and Graham was making an amazing point and as such a summary but as he said the high rank officials definitely with mother were they have very much to lose just by giving away power not let's not forget and most of this huge names instead of the military are either sanctioned or acts Hughes by the United States of being involved in several crimes basically in trafficking so this and the isolation of the international community has made it very difficult that the state huge names high ranking officials are pushed by the order to. Seize power but I think we should look be beyond that I think we should look inside of the troops how are the troops handling this and the fact that nearly $700.00 soldiers soldiers police cost the border both borders between a in Brazil and Colombia and recognize one way they'll even though it's not a huge number it is a significant number because it represents I think it's about 20 or 25 percent of the troops there were sent to both borders so I think we're not looking on the right direction I think we're not looking at the troops which are the ones who are suffering the crisis who are really on the really understand the humanitarian crisis and who are the basic ones who want the humanitarian aid and a change in the government for the we should really be working the people of. The shark and the people who have to do this so what about Mr Grey those backing I mean is go back in from so many Latin American governments always has got backing from the United States government and come about. Does he therefore just have to buy this time but what's the what's the kind of the best political move for him now. Well right now he made himself very clear today at the rally when he returns after he came back to the country right now it's the streets are the only way out he's trying to get. Old school then a silence Sile kind of pressure which means people on the streets every day or at least every week protesting against the government and now that he has the world's attention again and that he after the 23rd now that he won momentum again he knows this is the only way to be and I think he said several times that he may well that day the opposition the reticent assistant made different mistakes and the 23rd and I think one of those even though he hasn't said that openly it's the SAG that every speech evolves around the United States and how the United States was going to save than a cell and was going to save the country and how he was a puppet of the United States and he said he made himself very clear today when he said no this is a venison issue we're going to take care of this we are going to do it and the only way to do it right now it's going to the speech he already made his international tearing around South America and it's very thing we need also to read between the lines and the fact that he didn't go to the United States so he doesn't want to give any more power to that. To that side that the government has been pushing for the past few months and doesn't want to be seen as an American puppet. Exactly and he's right now he's changing a little bit of a strategy and he's coming back to his roots and to his parties and the venison opposition roots which is basically the streets and trick samples or the Saturday he calls for a huge demonstration and I say huge because you know he he has been delivering that so far today for example he was just hours to call for all the people that we saw today and if there's it's a holiday here well it's it's a bit couple of days because there's Carnival are a ball and Mardi Gras and yes thanks I agree and people still showed up and there was hundreds of people and get out gas never seen in the country and in my in you know white I mean at the airport. First for him just calling him so that is very significant so do people do you think. Have the heart for this are they ready to get out there on the streets I mean they've been out in the streets of seems for show long and under such difficult economic circumstances. Well that really surprised me today when I spoke to several protesters in. The rally. They say that look we know because I thought you know when when why though as outsell might so many days like 10 days he was absent and I thought you know people are going to lose hope we pray going to see themselves in the same situation as in 20172014 you know it opposition that doesn't really make a move and were like it we're like you know you never really sense poss but it was not the case I mean everyone told me look he's working we know that what he has to do we trust him we trust these near Venice are an episode and and we're ready for anything that he sets and their people are following exactly what he needs telling them to do because this strategist completely different and the fact that he's he came out of nowhere NEAR Oh no one can blame him for you know past mistakes that I guess people hope and I think also you know after so many years now that finally people see that there's something going on there's something moving I mean he wasn't arrested Nicolas neither has arrested him. And if they international community supports him now they they're there willing to do whatever it takes and the strategies not of violence it's not going to the streets to stay there but to put pressure and people understand that and they're being patient and they're just going for it and what about us of a doer or has he got something in his in his arsenal you know that he can he can bring on I mean is there anything he can do to change the tide. Well I look I don't really think things are going to change any more I think you now either either this. Either with this the other US government just banish or eat makes Maduro stronger and eat it reveals the true face of the region there's no 50 shades in between I mean it's either one or the other because there's no turning back I mean it's not a way beneficial as going to be back at it when he was generates a 1800 so mother has another move a strategy I'm sure they do I'm completely sure they do because they have too much to lose and it's not easy it is a 20 year regime it's not a mother it's they continue to see a rock. So this is this is something this is something huge we're talking about this is not a small group you know that doesn't want to leave power this is a group that controls the politics they control economy they control commerce they control everything in the country and they're isolated right now where are they going where they're going to run they can't so this is a very very complicated so I'm sure they have a strategy and well they have the hierarch of fish sauce and I'm sure they have also support they have people support and I'm sure not as many as we're able as we've seen but they they have so we have we're going to see something and the fact that they're so quiet right now you know that's never a good sign that's never a good sign of the government Vanessa thank you very much for talking to us. Thank you for having me Scott Sullivan has it out or is the New York Times reporter and Caracas Venezuela of course. Well in the United States the House Judiciary Committee which is no controlled by the Democratic Party in the U.S. Congress has passed 81 government agencies and people and other organizations to submit documents in connection with its investigation into allegations of obstruction of justice and the other irregularities might involve President Trump among those included in the request President sons Donald Jr and Eric Anderson law judge I were joined from Washington by White House correspondent Tom accounting Otara Hello Well this is of course what we were expecting I suppose that the Democrats to begin and investigations on a variety of fronts. What are the we just said that they're looking into obstruction of justice what would be the groans to claim that the president had obstructed justice well and a lot of ways the investigation that's being done now by these congressional Democrats is similar to the one that Robert Mueller the special counsel is doing I'm. Going to say something not at all I'm not really listening cards so I thought oh it's fine and they are you know trying to get information or evidence that might show that the president has you know because he's been accused of obstruction of justice so they're looking at that and they're also looking at corruption charges but the requirements for the congressional Democrats are different they want to find out as much as they can about what the president has done but they're not trying to try him in a criminal court the way special counsel would be doing so at this point time the congressional Democrats are just trying to get as much information as they can and then they will try to tell a larger story about what they see as possible abuse of power. And is that is it clear what these documents are or is it just that they're asking for documents that might cover over a diety of heads Well the head of the Judiciary Committee Gerald nowther has talked about what he believes he might find in terms of obstruction of justice or abuses of power he's spoken about it in general terms he hasn't been all that specific about what they're looking for with these particular doc documents but there's been a request for so many of them like you said they're asking for things from people who are working at the White House and at the Justice Department and just across the government and then business associates and as you mentioned family members so it's a it's a big net that they've thrown out there on the should we really any surprise here should though that this is what the Democrats always said they wanted to do that's right they've been now and they've been in power in the House of Representatives for about 2 months and they set out to investigate and that's certainly part of their mandate and what they're doing one of the questions is How aggressive should they be in this some of the more progressive Democrats say that they they want to impeach the president and some of the more centrist Democrats are concerned about making sure that they're taking care of their constituencies and not getting too caught up in these investigations and plus the Democrats know that they need to have the support of Republicans in order for to proceed with any impeachment at this point time they definitely don't have the support of the Republicans what did Jerrold Nadler say when asked about impeachment whether it was a possibility he's not spoken about it specifically he has hasn't ruled it out either he knows that he needs to both tend to the needs of his of his leftward you know the left wing of the Democratic Party because that's what some of them want but at the same time he's not sure that there's enough evidence or that there's enough material or what they'll find or whether the investigation itself is is in the best interest of Democrats. So when they when they get all this material is there evidence that they are coordinating with some of her with the special counsel with Robert Mueller since they have different goals seem to be operating on different tracks as they should be they have they have their own agenda the Democrats do they want to get to the bottom of it they want to get the facts but they're not prosecuting in the same way it's a political approach in some ways and a sense that it's not going to be a court of law it's more the court of public opinion in a lot of ways but at the same time they want these documents they want the facts in front of them so they can determine which way they should go what if they don't get them they haven't a power to enforce. President Trump has has shown or he's
