Diana Ross why did falls fall in love and why most of us right handed that was the homework question yesterday set by East Oxford primary school it was set by 10 year old has some Let's just remind all so why are people. Yes I'm right handed my sister's right handed my mom is left handed I feel like her Uncle Tom was left handed I feel if you're a left handed person you know the provenance of your did miss in your family very well but we we needed to get to the bottom of it why are most people right handed Well luckily we had a tame senior lecturer cycling parts this morning his name is Ben Kenwood and he's a senior lecturer in psychology Oxford Brookes University here is his attempt at a not so it's a good question it's especially good question because it's a bit unusual for humans amongst the whole animal kingdom that we have such a strong bias that the vast majority of people or right handed so dogs for example could be right or left pawed but it's about a $5050.00 split of which they are and that's the same for for most animals so. Basically has to do with specialisation of the different holds of the brain so that's called lateralization in the human brain it's actually the case that both sides of the brain do most things Ok so there's a bit of a meth loading around you know some people strongly left brain some people strongly right brains and that has made you can't because it's not really like like most stuff that your brain does it does on both sides Ok but there are a few things that are specialized so one to one side or the other language is one of them so language is a lot of that is done in on the left hand side of the brain. And the thing about language you want to think about like this but the thing about language is it involves a fair amount of fine motor control because talking talking is quite a fiddly business it's entirely unconscious so you might be thinking hold on these 2 about the left hand side the right the thing is the left hand side of your brain controls the right hand side of your body and vice versa it's just a theory it's really hard to prove these kinds of things because basically what we're talking about is this is kind of an evolutionary theory a theory about how brains evolved and you can't really do experiments on human evolution to prove beyond doubt theories like this so then that leaves us with the question how a 90 percent yeah why and why for humans that it's so biased such a strong bias towards right handedness and that question is really quite hard on so I don't as far as I know I don't think anyone's got a really definitive answer to it one really nice idea is that it has to do with the fact that humans are a very cooperative species we're much more corporative than any other animal species and cooperation requires coordination Yeah and so you know I probably most people are familiar with the situation where they're doing some kind of job together with another person and it become likely to find it yeah and it becomes more difficult because the other person is left handed so. I'm struggling to think of a good example right now but it does happen like yeah yeah like tennis maybe oh yeah although actually now that you mention tennis that's a really interesting case where. Left handers have an advantage there but that's a competitive thing so if you're if you're collaborating Ok It helps if you know if you both do things in the same way very very often in terms of just how you organize your kind of motor activities like how you move your body if you're if you're engaged in a competition against someone else which is the opposite Yeah so actually left handers overrepresented in top level sports like tennis that is basically a one on one computer and this 11 really nice idea for why I left handers a still around the tall is that they have this competitive advantage in this one study I found where they've looked many pre-industrial societies so kind of hunter gatherer societies this kind of thing and they found that the level of violence in the societies which varies a lot some hunter gatherers are very peaceful some preindustrial a society can be rather violence they found that the more violence there is in those societies the more left handers. So that's that's a fascinating kind of bit of circumstantial evidence for this idea because I hadn't even thought about survival of the fittest and you're right if you say if you need to cooperate you should wear many shots of engine for 3 should think you know right handed if we help collaborating then the left handers would just slowly go out but there must be some element of competition where they do better Yeah maybe not just competition the thing about left handers is so you might think Ok how does it work with a left hand maybe they're just mirror image of right handers so maybe. Right handers have the language motor stuff going on in the left hand side of the brain maybe left handers have it on the right hand side of the brain yeah recently they did a brain imaging study where they discovered that's not actually the case most left handers like most right hand this also have their language like motor stuff on the left so left handers are not just mirror image of right handed generally they're a little bit different so so they're over represented in things like. Music people who are very highly skilled at music and math but the flip side of that they also have increased rates of neuro psychiatric disorders this kind of thing so so your average left hand the brain is a little bit different not just the mirror image but more different than that how amazing how you write 100 left handed right hand is that any left hand is in my heart my mother's left hand this is there any inheritance patterns Yeah my mom has left and yeah I write Yeah so there's known it must be genetic because it does run in families but they haven't found the relevant genes yet as far as I know I always knew my left handed man with different and indeed special thanks very much to Dr Ken Ben Kenward from Oxford Brookes University So there you go that is why biz a predominance of a bias in humans. But it's sort of as far as I know it was a random 5050 chance that fine motor control get social and you have 10 side of your brain and therefore you don't you know dominant side is you're right. Absolutely I mean more homework questions to come this week and specifically in about an hour. From a social primary school when we go back to school David Greene now. Change. a child.
