utterly C. Utterly. Was. Very nice indeed nothing's going to stop us now of course from Starship This is Lori Bailey on b.b.c. Radio and this is our country special I'm with you until 4 pm and so is super reporter. And sunscreen today he's walking around. The highlights from the final day of the festival I think it's about time he visits the farm yard everybody go away into the farm and in typical media fashion we walk up to Rosie major He takes. Well she's letting nature she's doing a business in front of us she looks ready to be there to be just introduced. Just explain a little bit about who you are what you do you hear. From around. So we've traveled a fair way. Took a couple of hours maybe a little bit more 3 vehicles Big Bird lorries full of a lot of animals so we've got. To give us a nice warm welcome from. Jersey cow and she is going to be Mel. And she looks great and yeah she's very. Quite a few back from the farm but we've also. Had to do was going on their feet like really Yeah so we usually leave them with a little heading into the head. And the little leg as well it depends on how we do our has. Other people tend to share them differently. Yeah so back on the farm where a farm attraction. They used to seeing. This is incredible like there's been so many people we're not always this busy on the farm. So you bring the animals here. You're just trying to introduce people to for. This the reason we're here is a really. Because obviously Oxford's a long way from the. Book and it's just to show people what goes on on the farm so we've got the milking demonstration at the minute you know we're. In the main arena. An amazing Oh absolutely elated I'll be doing the Willie red. The hawg. Vintage tractors the young farmers it's even like an auction thing so there's just basically just educating everybody in the farming wild. I'm going to cheat a bit more that something's going on down here at the farm yes indeed we are coming up very shortly Here's a bit of Robbie Williams 1st that was filmed live from country. Because. She. Good old Robbie Williams she's the one of course. Is also country for live the special from b.b.c. Radio with you until 4 pm with everything we can squeeze in Countryfile related Don't forget to ask the gardener and just gardening in general is coming up shortly Plumtree is going to be in the studio to answer your gardening queries and particularly how we can help those lawns the garden all survive through what's been well so far relatively temperamental summer is opinion on that Katy Perry's up next and then good old film Countryfile live and as I understand it he's kneedeep in a farmyard. Cross my heart. Sick and tired of. Every way the spray. Can even go on the. That even. Comes. C Yeah really nice never really over from Katy Perry goodness I'm sure she's still reeling from the copyright decision that came out in the last week the dark horse if you missed that do look up the story massive payouts on that particular one and a little known fact too and I can now offer you. Never really. Never really over from Katy Perry you know I better get it now just the right length to eat a skull check as it turns out I wonder how I know that film so now he's needy in the farmyard Countryfile life has more of what he saw there glory in the farmyard and. You hear this you know we don't say we've brought most of our families where love to be behind I can link into but we're holding the 4 he said about. The reactions from people like when they come in they see the animals here they love it I think a few people have been alive and they. Have Said the farm out is their favorite but was down by well it is winter and handling so we have a guinea pigs to hold the rabbit and the chicks as well so it's very interactive very interesting to be patient you know we get those on the phone with us I want our family to and people are supposed to pick me i think of them as pets but they're on our farm we consider them as we come down to do a sheep if you don't hear. Say. From the state to say these things that he. Was. So if we had down to these are then he said we've got. To have our sheet Well actually one of them is of very old. And we've also got a sheep as well so we like to bring different breeds so we've got different variety of the sheep but we've also got the red breed survival trust with us and he has also brought some of the Red Brigade is a very special occasion. Yeah so they're pretty incredible. Very pretty but as you can see look this is a very hot day that's all we're doing constantly this week and building up the hopes of both of you when you take them on the 3 things it's about do you choose the animals that come with you so that you know you know they're going to be comfortable and. Most of our animals so we have. Some of these do something and the only ones probably not as used to being transported to the alpacas but they did very well and we're very impressed and they all seem to settle so we came down on Wednesday morning. Tonight Yeah. They all did really well very well not stressed at all. What do you do in the fall is it your day job my day job it's my job title is the head to foot. Oh yeah so I personally do quite a bit on the farm but I also well denies events as well so we do. So in fact actually a sign from tomorrow we do the summer fun them into in a dinosaur we. Live just a mythical creek just said there's all sorts going on but then also in the time time. We've got residential school children that school schoolchildren come and stay overnight and say yeah we get we get schools from all over the country really we had a few from Manchester a few from London so yeah it was very educational. Especially those from. Really don't understand much of it I don't look you know now yeah you see we do Yeah absolutely so we have had a school before and never been in a what's before they don't know what a cow looks like other than from pictures and books so we are a must educate we are a working farm as well so it must be amazing watching the reaction to. Kids when they see that yeah for the 1st time oh yeah it's lovely and sometimes it's what's not and you think oh you don't actually know what that is that's a cow and it is so mostly that they're always so interested and they're always so into it as well that they want to learn which is just very very very nice that is a I love my job it's a good job so if you've got a busy day. For all sorts of people wanted to see your items you get loads of thanks very much thank you very good I am jealous is suffering still title the head of fund although it does make me wonder whether any other business in the world could employ the head of fund you know somehow I don't see that job title making in the world of banking for example a.b.c. Radio Works for it David's pre-vis Breakfast Club joined us from Oxford shoes breakfast. Every weekday morning some sense of research suggesting this is not a good idea or valuables from burglars in your underwear drawer they say that was the 1st place I'd look is on the way in your underwear drawer the only one thing that I hide when I go away is my backup hard drive the last time I put it in there in the place I would most likely yes it was. He's an author Taylor Swift. To. Go and. Get. Us. A thank you as. A and. Us. To. Us. Thank. You. Thank. You thank. You. Thank you thank you the. Dirty dirty key to. The good to take. Good. Cause I'm still shaking. Like. A baby you shake shake shake. Baby. Yeah delighted to be with you in this t.j. Well we've come a country fall. Live from afar Phil Mercer is over there getting sort of recordings from everyone he is sort of well going to get his hands on but I know that's not exactly let's just leave that he's chatting to everybody delighted now day to be talking gardening Plumtree who is head gardener I believe at the Anthony home garden center joins me now is that correct Allan have I got the title correct yes you've certainly got my title correct gardener Wow it's really park manager but that's what's wrong there how some people called me had gone there but really I'm the plant manager the plant manager I go and just give us a sort of snapshot of what that involves here on a regular basis well basically making sure that the sales are kept up to scratch so that encompases buying stock from all the supplies that I've nominated. We do that on a very weekly basis we do little and often that's why we keep our stock nice and fresh and home garden. And it all looks very very nice a moment I'm very glad to hear it and I should think you have a very large part to play in that would it be fair to call you a plant expert Well you could say that I mean I've been in the business for over 40 years rather date me I know but a lot better and fantastic it's one of those things that really. Experience comes with age now e.c. Eve hit the nail on the head there because my wife and I have recently decided to take garden exhibit while I say seriously I'm sure you would disagree if you see a garden and we decided to have a go and for my wife's birthday I took her out to a garden center we chose a few plants you know we're trying to grow a Salix tree and a little bit at the bottom of the garden along with a few other things as well but I wouldn't call it a resoundingly success so far Allan we tried an Acer not that long ago absolutely dead within weeks we can't tell whether it is the when that did it or whether we didn't water it enough whether it's in the wrong kind of plant part it things are the key to good frog does this sound common to you would you think most people got more now than us. I know this sounds very common the a so perhaps was dry at some time yes you do of course with Aces need Eric Aisha's compost of course is lime free. Which is the thing and the sail aches if it was one of those small leafed. Flamingo types those pretty pink ones I think yes although the label say that they prefer sunny positions really they like a little bit of shade and plenty of water the a c. I don't think we managed to get it all right or rather we did get the sort of shade in the water side of things but too late in the day and it was quite hard and. The best thing to do it is actually to cut it back by about 50 percent right and then you'll fire show out again but the important thing with. Sale is of course these water rises Salix do like willows like water that might he well so I hear yes it's not a lot of this right now we're going to get from you some tips on how we can sort of survive through the summer because it's not particularly straightforward and if I had to eat in sort of a sentence here what would you say is the biggest risk that people try you know what's the number one mistake people make when looking at their guns at this time of year well I think the number one thing's got to be watering right because certainly in the the dryness of the last week and of course the 2 weeks previous is that there's a lot of rain but that doesn't mean it's a you don't need to water because it's so important to keep a constant most plants roots right Ok That's interesting to hear that they've not exactly surprising to hear but interesting because I think we all think we know it that's the thing we all think we do it up we all think we've understood exactly how to make it work I suspect that's not the case fair enough Yeah fair enough I think even even with 40 plus years experience sometimes I get it wrong as well I'll plant the wrong thing in the wrong place and you think I would know better after advising . For many many years about how to palm and where to plant. Questions into if you'd like to ask the gardener something we're going to come in just a moment to remember 3 is the number your message Oxford. 109100. But I'll be getting some general tips from him as well that you'll follow the advice that I'm going to. Right. Thank. You. Our. This is the country special all right. Oxford to mirror everything going on at that big festival a planet I've brought in Alan Plumtree he's giving us some gardening expertise and I'm glad to say is that he's going to help answer your questions as well we've got one here from Gene in Hendra which are going to come to straight away but if you'd like to ask Alan something as well do remember you can text in 8133 Start your message with the word Oxford call me 080-810-9100 or tweet me at b.b.c. Now Alan we've got a question for you straight away are you primed and ready to go I'm desperate for you let Bryan Relata go so Gene From 100 says she has a magnolia in a pot it's blooming well but some of the leaves are going brown and falling off is there anything wrong or is it all natural no it's not particularly natural 1st of all it would be nice to find out if it was a Magnolias still a larger or Magnolia Solon Giana type but I suspect if it's in a container it would be a starter which is a shorter grow in Magnolia they go Gene do you know ceteris right if you got that idea but anyway never mind which particular the real crux of the matter is that if you get in brown leaves or the middle leaves are falling off it's just been dry at some time over the last or 2 or 3 months perhaps the best thing to do is now is really give it a good so you won't lose it but give it a good so and perhaps some feed some powder fertiliser or even a liquid fertiliser that will keep it go in for the rest of the summer but don't worry it won't die now they are how much more reassuring can you get Allan thank you very much and if you're anything like me then you are delighted just to know that it won't die but if it not only sort of comes back to life but continues to blame a lippy to fill the nastiest even better news if you'd like to have an answer question 813 devil 3 tax number start your message talks had called me right 109100 or tweet me at b.b.c. Oxford put on some more sort of general tips and if you don't my. And let's talk law and because our garden we had to dig out these gigantic concrete foundations from a shed that used to be there man I can tell you that was by breaking sweaty labor a friend of mine you know we bent a few spades getting it out it was so deep we're quite depressed really to discover all that clay underneath which I really wasn't excited about it all but fortunately my father No he's staying with us at the moment and probably listening so shout out to either John saved us all by laying down turf sort of leveling out everything in the in the lawn and make it beautiful again but we had a paddling pool the Palin pool stayed overnight and rather too long into the morning we've got big dead patch of grass on that now can you give me some advice but also a source of advice about how to help grass survive in particular through the summer yeah sure well grass is incredibly difficult to kill off but good so that's what does that say so that's that's the 1st thing if you. Have that patches either from animals found in the lawn or you know such as yourself a little paddling but all were too much keep it well watered the worst scenario would be perhaps I mean to reseed it that means put some lawn grass seed down but I wouldn't do it I'm told say the autumn time when they become a little bit cooler and certainly in the evening time. And then just receive it with some good quality. But I would expect the Grant would regret particular if you get well watered well I'm glad he said that and we haven't had much luck with the receding because of those birds we need a scarecrow or something is unbelievable a little having a whale of a time but it does ruin our lawn and if you got any advice on sort of the way to water because I don't think there's word of a hose pipe band yet but you never know what that could be around the corner where you don't but certainly we pay enough in water rates that we. Live. Yes Yeah. The best thing is lawn sprinklers are the thing now they're either oscillating ones. Which are the best ones really that even amount of water on your lawn obviously best done in the evening time when the when it's called down but certainly watering the lawn and giving a feeders Well there are propriety feeds. Feeding problems which we do stock at home garden so come along and have some further advice nicely plowed staff and. We gonna let you did a survey that way all right and that's the that's the grass and you know you might think it teaching a grandmother to suck eggs over here but I've not had much luck in helping my lawn survive and you know anything more general on gardens and I know that's an unbelievably broad thing to say because who knows what you could have growing in your garden but that sort of general tips we can all that here to carry over the summer Well yes I mean you start with hanging baskets right yes place how about watering every day every day every day and feeding twice the weight twice every couple of weeks. Give it a liquid feed that will keep it flowering right through till say October end of October. On to the basin borders if you're growing perennial plants such as Lupin's delphiniums and that type of thing once a flower shoots have gone over prune them hard back to the base and then that will generate some new show even a little bit more flower for the autumn that yeah we need that actually we're losing coffee right now yeah that's a. Watering arm in arm fanatical about it. Ok plants looking great and of course a little bit a mole. When you put compost or products like that around the plant to keep the moisture in the soil very very good indeed Ok now I'm the final sort of general peace advice is that I know because I see them whenever I'm travelling around the county that a lot of people tha
