Radio Scotland thanks for all your calls and texts by the workplace parking levy which is set to be passed the softer noon. Holyrood I didn't manage to get through the Scottish government statement in full so let me just quickly do that again the workplace parking Levy is the result of Scottish Green Party proposals and will give local authorities the choice to introduce such a levy it is not mandatory councils will also have the power to apply exemptions as they see fit any council proposing a levy must carry out Transparent consultation and impact assessment and at the moment no local authority is in a position to propose a workplace parking Levy so any comment on a scheme is speculative Ok but it will be passed to Hollywood the soft and the speculative schemes and 802954 your thoughts still to come. I was still. There so I'll be joined by the bus Co who's going on 2 of them early Sunday and the head teacher of go back primary school will be here to talk about the school charter award that they will be presented with today the 1st primary school in Scotland to get it and there and back or day really started the ball rolling on Saturday so right now we're going to try some of us never been done before it's called Britain get talking to help we're going to pause the show to make time for everyone there at home to get together and just talk on a go that was Saturday but today is actually World Mental Health Day and on a regular health surgery we're joined by psychotherapist Graham was and he's here to help if you need to talk and get in touch you can either call the usual number or wait away 59295 double or text 8 to 95 mornings with Kay Adams on b.b.c. And Tom says My office is in Glasgow I attend the office 2 days a week the companies we are contract to 2 are in Edinburgh who will pay for my parking at the other company car parts for the 3 days what's the big deal says Fiona having to pay a couple of quid a day to park your car cheap as parking in the land anyone this on site parking is lucky to have it should pay for it no exceptions the alternative is for the rest of us as part miles away for free and walk in or park on the street for 8 or 10 pints a day and listen penny from Nottingham penny Poyser Vida mentalist describes as a success but does it only apply to and affect the city center How efficient is public transport in the evenings and at weekends people don't work Monday to Friday from one to 4 any more or less a civil servants or kinds to employees public transport needs to be available and affordable tram system the adequate for principally the airport is fairly useful useless to most residents employed and well we knew it was controversial the work place parking Levy and and certainly in the early stages it seems to be. Let us get led to the stress we've got a good story now a good news story and it was an expected Musical be top which was to change just like. So. Round there you go that is Glasgow busker Ben minty to acting with Emily Sunday on Emily Sunday so read all about it no band is prepared to take part in the finale of Sunday's Street Symphony a b.b.c. Scotland channel quest to find 5 busking acts to perform with the Scottish Symphony Orchestra and I'm joined by John Logan who's a conductor and a range of history symphony and also the head of brass at the Royal Conservatoire Good morning to you both want to morning as they see you with your guitar Ben are you going to tree is. A little bit of a song at some point here on good good would love to and so when it when did the story all begin for you then bet. The b.b.c. Got in touch but sure. That was. Just so excited to get involved because really I respect those and I was enjoying music can I see just to creep in a little bit you know sort of like a phone that big me just so that we can hear you and I mean at that point you were busking in Glasgow Yeah Yes that's correct yeah Boskin and Glasgow for just under 6 years right Ok so that must have been a surprise even to get like 1st full call Yeah yes. And then when she showed up and wanted to sing on the street it was very surreal so she came down into the street to say with you yeah I knew she was coming to check me out and have a look. But neither she nor me no then the durian in the street to go. Instantly direct road was amazing so I mean John was this part of an addition true says here that Emily would go away and actually see the different singers and sit in that sort of normal habitat if you like well for Emily that issue she would run many place in Scotland listen to what sort of talent was on our streets and of course you can buy it with a whole a real talent so obviously it was new and it was going to be in some of these places so it was definitely some people on the streets but really she spent you know quite a few hours in each place they are but in a path and Glasgow as well and so the big idea for this is to bring together buskers with the Scottish Symphony Orchestra why that particular synergy I mean who came up with that idea I'm afraid that was my idea. It's a good idea you know have the ball Yes Well you know. I had been putting together things with the symphony orchestra with folk musicians and rock and pop musicians for quite a few years and I. Got a bit of a joke Thompson's billions and me sort of thing and what I thought was being nice things is for all types of music to be on the stage at the same time and something that I think is overlooked quite a lot is the you know the music that we do have in our streets you know what would be like walking there in circles to become history with no music what would that feel like you know and I think the fact that we can all come in the stage where there were jazz musicians where there were classically trained or whether we were very creative street musicians to come on stage all together was was the main aim and for it not to be a competition of course saying you know it wasn't like x. Factor of the voice or any but that was really for the for the good of doing it and how did every Sunday get involved Emily got involved through the b.b.c. She was approached them with the original idea came to the b.b.c. Here and they liked the idea so then they took over and so she was approached by a margin many people with her would have been approached but really there could've been anybody better than Emily to do this you see her in stage with as an artist as a comic turn and very energetic and sort of an almost an ad against that that she's very good and then as soon as that finishes she's like you or I and I think that was a really nice thing to do and she she was very passionate about the music with the buskers will bring to the table as well and that was that was wonderful so what is your style then Ben what's your music. Play mainly acoustic stuff. My style was mainly specifically to get people to put money in the case of yeah play in what the masses lost and to and so are contemporary pop and stuff but I started writing my own acoustic music in and through that and Israel and so I guess it I guess it's just acoustic of term of music as opposed to many subjoin as to Pacman and deeply elsewhere don't you play you know is it mainly busking that you do not play the pub soon gags and I've played then I got a huge classic there and places. And I've played it all over the u.k. Really yeah so when you go involved and this process that and. What happened and so once once where Emily It gave me a call and let me know that I was going to be a part of show and produce get stuck in the house and practice and. Voice coach and all of us came the stuff. So it was really really buys in Philly and then every day there they are and it would be up because you know when there was a house near or next to it was not bar and then it be the orchestra so it was like every day was. More exciting and more nerve wracking and there's how many different buskers other involved sex there 6 and deal work together well yeah it was it was really cool kids even the guys are really b.b.c. Real became a re family friendly unit you know I mean. The whole environment was really fun and everybody really enjoyed just made new friends so when as best as possible so what kind of music you doing that. Basically huge but I took music and one of the reasons why many different types of buskers were picked you know we have a we have a funk band we have. A traditional cello and fiddle and we have Band Of course we have I call friend who's doing a classical song. And we have a fantastic jewel called Sera Sera and Junebug and I just evolved from what Ben was in there is that it was it was really lovely to see all this camaraderie assume is everybody met and of course right at the end of the concept everybody's on stage with Emily food back and saying it was filled with them section and orchestra of all doing the same same thing son and Junebug for example their them they've got a good Coming up at King Tut's and there's they're using me and Freya as well in that so the friendship is continuing after this which is really nice to see so when do we see the big finale tonight tonight. Can you give us any set of alternate. What day is this is Thursday yeah so I mean like. You had me going you know because I was. Listening Yeah tonight at 10 o'clock on the then you b.b.c. School. Ok so I can you give us any set of. Sneak Previews why are we going to see well I mean this is the culmination of all the hard work I mean no the the the buskers came to me you know how to arrange the music for 4 for orchestra and then as Ben said that was not every day a new thing happening voice coach and then was a rehearsal with a rhythm section then a rehearsal with the orchestra so it's a combination of all the concert platform so there is an audience there and. A long concert and it starts from the very beginning with them Emily saying in one of her songs from the new album with Phil lacustrine called spiral and then the buskers come on each act comes on they do their own thing and as well as that they're also saying or please with with Emily as one of our songs as well and that's basically the parameters of the of right now when you see it you don't think you play with the orchestra pit Yeah join school it's an original song of mine called home. Which was amazing. So I got to play my own song with the focus to which was was really hard to not just stop wasn't it I am so so I mean isn't. Intimidated And when you when you walk in a room full of people. You know go and they go to uni to become a proper musician and I'm just park you know who sings some tunes in the street for some call in and. Then you're standing there we're always professional so but everybody was lovely so nice and we have family there watching they were all yeah. They loved that they were of the. My kids are really enjoying slagging me off watching the show. Unfortunately stardom doesn't really exist and your home does a know and it's. Such a law fortunate to bring good family themes and so has it's taken you on a different path you're going to be good on to you with yeah it was just I mean as a musician when in the water you know I'm no I'm not saying to a label I don't have management and Emily not to. I mean because of that Parker anybody to do this you know I mean and she very occasionally asked me Joy you know maybe she thinks you did. They see my. So when does that kick of. Starts the beginning next month and I'm still. And then it goes for about 2 months month in Europe and then a month in the u.k. Find amazing opportunity crazy. Don't even know if it's. As big as and it's fantastic I mean there was always the chance there wasn't a reason for doing it of course but there's also the chance that you know something to get noticed you know on the telly is a talent and obviously with the concert but but the story is just absolutely huge and. I mean well done to band I mean he deserves it and then obviously the scene something special but it is a lovely way to do to do a program you know to to bring people together who would never have come together before to give everybody a different experience and I'm sure it's been a different experience for Emilie Sandy and the orchestra as much as it has for Ben and the rest of the basket as you say. You know it to get other opportunities as a wonderful thing and I'm sure it's the same for all the fuss because they're absolutely I mean it was a very emotional journey for me as well you know getting to conduct a concert at the end you know and having that you know that Johnny from you know from literally from the street to symphony it was fantastic but I have to mention the players in the orchestra and the players and the rhythm section and all of Emily's team I mean everybody bought into this absolutely incredibly well and of course there was this synergy between you know orchestra members and buskers and them I mean we don't read them section from London there's probably the best that you could get in the u.k. And they were helping you know like like the band and the buskers of you know in the performance aspect of what they were going to do and that. Really lovely to see that we had as much by and it wasn't just another gig for the orchestra and the of these the session musicians there really bought into it as the as the whole umbrella did you feel that it was for me it's ridiculous that it was to be honest because you're bringing in so many different Jordans of music and different opinions of music and put it together so I think that really that. Emily's music producer. And between him and Joe and they brought all together made that walk and also made this feel comfortable. Because of as I will when you're in a situation absolutely as a big deal. And we did ask you to bring your guitar because we just thought we'd take advantage. Just given even just a short span and then we'll move on with it as the program but would love to hear 1st of all can I say thank you very much to both of you for joining us this morning and best a lot so that is tonight on the b.b.c.
