Radio. Sheffield It's 3 minutes past. Let's have a look at the weather then we need good weather here a sprout see say in them for us when we never ends Hi there good morning everyone well we're off to a largely dry start to the day across South Yorkshire and North Darbyshire but there are a few showers in the mix now we'll continue to see these showers throughout the day some of them turning a bit heavy at times although not as persistent as yesterday brightening up and feeling pleasant enough in those sunny spells highs of 20 Celsius today now remaining mostly dry overnight lows of around 11 Celsius and tomorrow is looking like a decent enough Day Yes we'll see very well amounts of cloud and it'll be largely dry with just your shower in the next feeding pleasant enough in the sunshine with highs of 21 Celsius or 74 in height as more online at b.b.c. Dot co dot u.k. Slushie field. P.v.c. Radiation feels. So good mauling you listen to Paul let's head with them out of the studio and I'm live from Sprint for a lot this morning on the banks of the river Don Some here for a dawn digital Discovery Day the launch of the Don Valley Way trail which is available through an app which you can download to your phone and follow various walks along with on we'll talk a bit more about that later but I've just actually walked onto a bridge that takes you over the log and it's made me realize that actually don't know much about rivers or not know much about locks and I don't know much about it says the notice that says Keep boat forward of Sylmar I am not a clue what that is there are various trusts and agencies that have been keeping this part of the world and the rest of the river down nice so that we can enjoy it and I'm hoping that you're going to come down to this discovery day meters and get involved in some of the great activities that are going on here so we're going to talk about this area we'll talk about what's changed here and we'll talk about how you can possibly see Kingfisher fish for salmon and also see fixed trees on the river Don We'll talk about all of that kak. Going to be. On the banks of the. . C.b.c. Radio show for with all the emulous Interpol let's head would so I am alive today at the law on the banks of the river. So it's kind of Sheffield and south. Navigation if that makes any sense so we're here because the dawn catchment river trustees launching the Don Valley way walking trail and heritage was today there is a discovery day taking place here so lots of activities we'll hear more about those from some of his flock hopefully she's the dawn catchment rituals representative what's your role then so it's a community engagement officer for the tourist So you want people to come and get involved basically that's exactly it's all about people getting and inspired by the river coming out enjoying the river. It's such an asset for Doncaster and there's so much you can do on air and it's all about showing people what wonderful place it is to spend some time on I'm a little bit embarrassed because I have I actually wasn't aware of this little bit of the river Dom Sprott block I've never been here before Born and raised in Sheffield 53 years with should I be ashamed of myself Sally No no it's a lot of people don't know about these wonderful places along the Don and this one in particular is gorgeous you've got leverage had just just up there on the walkway here which is an old limestone quarry you've got spot for a flash which is amazing to watch what Lindbergh's you've got all his med Iraq at the top there so the whole area is just just wonderful for nature an orchid meadow and yeah it's and not this time of year but in May In some ways time it's fantastic to see the orchids blooming up there oh that sounds lovely so I did mention the Sheffield and South Yorkshire navigation What is that so this is the canal and that's what we call this part of the canal which connects to the Don say back in the day that when the cows were created they diverted parts of the dog to sort of to allow transport along at a few trials but for goods and things like So it's just it's just an avocation really across and across dog Castor and the surrounding areas so you sound like the kind of person who can explain to me how a lot quirks Sally Oh I'm not actually sure what I was trusting you started with this help well it's also raising the water up to allow boats the sort. Gate safe and the boat can with. The water levels high enough and the gates of in particular that they get open to so control the lever the level of the kind of so they never floods Well that's a little bit more than I knew because I thank you very much for that so we're familiar with Timothy West and his wife you know the scales the canals in this area you know this up program that's on a lot more people getting involved in boats and stuff and coming on these waterways Yes definitely the water is so much cleaner than it was 20 years ago the water quality so much better and people are enjoying it you see canoeists and kayakers now in the dawn all the time especially in Sheffield. And I think people are just starting to realize that it is a wonderful place to just walk and cycle and enjoy and as somebody who's involved in the troops you talked about in the community down here to appreciate it and love it what else do you do so as part of my role I go into schools so my advice to younger children encourage that well tell them actually the story the story of the river Don And the story of how the salmon might be returning in 20 is a big part of our recent project the living heritage of the river Don has been helping salmon return to Sheffield so we've been keeping fish passes on all of the state we is that they never used to be up to travel up and so I've been telling children about that going to schools and teaching about that we also run volunteer days so we get people out there and show them that they can protect the dog and that it's an asset for them and as well as so of reconnection these habitats we're also reconnecting people to that river and what your other issues then obviously dealing with keeping it clean keeping it pretty getting people engaged What else do you do as a trust and what do the issues that are involved that you have to keep an eye on. With our volunteer days that we do a lot of later picks and a lot of sorting out fly tipping problems and things like that a main issue is that a lot of people still treat the river as a despair volunteers are really in gauged in so I'm encouraging people not to litter any. A little after all aside there goes in the river and then it goes out to sea so it's the whole process of keeping these areas tidy and clean through people to for people to enjoy of course and to also help the ecology of the river I was talking them what I've been asking people today I've not asked him yet but there will be no muskets and I have been thinking about our contacts in our links with the river Don because I go over bridges when I'm going to the gym when I'm going to work when we see my friends I will travel over various bridges What are your links to the river Don Then Sally so I live in Sheffield and I live on the porch of Brook which is a tributary of the dawn so I'm always looking after that little section of the river myself. And as well as I do a little bit of wild swimming Paul did a little bit of swimming Come on talk us through this while swimming while swimming How well do you get in the water. Not too well. We tend to go out to well there's some boats with on a different world so then but there's some nice tributaries in Sheffield the river Riverland is a good one in the riffle invalid there's a secret little plunge pool that you can jump in so there's lots of jumping and it's very cold but on a sunny day so what sue them for that you know just to pick you know you see you have the fish to clean your toes then yet definitely over parts the body you need to be careful you down there and what else is going to be happening today then what are you looking forward to why do you want people to come down here today Sally so today is all about people finding out about some of the organizations that have been working hard to look after the dawn and the canals as we've got canal and river trust they are running a fishing taster sessions where kids of that into to learn how to fish they're all about getting people angling again and coming down enjoying that peace and serenity that you that you could spirits when you're angling. Cycling trails led by the Transport I'm way at There's even a walking circus so please come on yeah yeah there's a looking circus there's lots of activities going on. That organization is that the environmental agency a head. Wildlife Trust as well wonderful supply of activity going on here and volunteers you talk about well and so looking for some solace of course we're always looking for volunteers a and if you do want to volunteer do you just get in touch volunteer at. The e-mail address and we do a couple of days and weeks always out and about said yes please come and join and they love you to me because when that became a balsam in your mind and b.b.c. Radio Sheffield you know since a poll that live for all sprawled that's where I am today what is nice. And I think it's appropriate to have a little bit to Madonna because we talk about. Material go I think. RINGBACK B.b.c. Radio shuffle with Madonna no place for Colm brawls here because I'm at the spot for a lot can live from here and we're here today because it's a very special day where you can discover all about the river Don you can come down and be a part of this the weather is perfect for it get the kids loaded up in the car bring him down there are lots of activities taking place a lot with some fishing some riding on boats is generally learning about to the very sparse but very special part of the world that we live in so as I said before this place is quite new to me the canal and river trust is a charity which projects over 2000 miles of waterways in England Wales and is from the trust and she's here to tell us a bit more about the job that she chose so back I don't know what that funny noises over the locks moving oh we're at the lock and it's moving back what do we need to do what are we just on back what's happening explain it might get a little bit noisy in a 2nd because you can see where a mechanized lock so that means you can hear some of the mechanical works working inside and I can see the guys up in the tower have just started to I think open some of the sluices so we might see their lock filling up in a 2nd what does opening sluice is made. As if that means that we are using the buttons on the pedestals are up in the lobby there and that means we're opening the gates the little gate she can't see below the waterline and that is actually emptying the lock at the moment they are pushing out into the other side which can't see from here so it's this lot use quite frequently you said this can be about 11 o'clock certainly as we have the oil tanker coming through which is a pita freight. Which they move the. Big bits of oil up and down this canal. Yet it's also well used by pleasure boaters people. Yes people coming to enjoy their waterway on their own boats so that could be narrow boats or kind of little river cruises as well I mean I feel like it's a pleasure to just been talking to Sally his thoughts about the job that she does how is your job different then. The work that you do different and the support that you give this area from the canal and ritual sense where you're from sure I would like to say for the canal never trust we work very closely with the dogcatcher Rivers trust we grow volunteering on the waterways in the my region is the North East region so I cover all of Yorkshire in Stockton on Tees So we work together to bring more people to the waterway to enjoy in a big massive range of ways we're doing paddleboard volunteer ring this week we're supporting this event here both as a kind of looking to get more people interested in the water get them volunteer and we'd like people to do that by coming onto our website which is kind of rich or stocked at u.k. We've got that in quickly don't you know some of our paddleboat volunteering where people get in litter and put it on the top and it looks really fun but it looks really it was Mark Thompson who did it for the North was me he was yeah Mark came along and joined Lizzie Carr who's that Lizzie outside so she's actually the 1st person to paddle board across the English Channel so she was offering a chance to try paddleboarding and also volunteer at the same time and look after our green spaces by doing it in an interesting new exciting way let's talk about looking after our green spaces because why do our water in a waterways need protecting the here the been here for however long they've been here thousands millions I don't know how long they've been here why didn't we protect in that well you've got 2 different things happening rivers and canals where we've got a canal sections that obviously historic piece of water that need looking after so that might be the main lock gates need replacing they need replacing. Every 25 years they need a lot of maintenance that to introduce is getting old so they need to constantly repaired and constantly looked after and also the kind of the management of the environment as well so we look for volunteers to help us with all of those elements so we are always looking for more people to join us so if that's something that interests them please get what you can use the Web sites are going to change you think and what about the how you got involved and you've been working for the for these for these troops for 8 years how did you get involved what you like about it what I saw volunteering myself so I love being outside of the great way of escaping the canals give so if you live in a city center you never very far away from a from a nice bit of green space in a lovely walk. Of the environment like looking after kind of everything that goes with that really so I think there's a great opportunity and I thought so and I went for it don't and you've done it well so I am looking forward to seeing I've heard that the wrecking fishes are not as on here will I see any today you might well see something she's not as I believe there are some in this area as you can see it's very green lots of trees are around it's a very beautiful space so we really like sport for we want more people to come and enjoy it so we're hoping that today that people this will shine a light of it as a house with the self more people go out and enjoy the what was wonderful back a dent from Canal and river trials she is getting very excited about more people coming down here today to get yourself down and be a part of the great activities but here today it's a special activities day we're going to be talking about this new app that you can download onto your phone and used to enjoy the walks in this area and to learn a little bit more about the history of this area and this cat cow and she can be fishing for us a little bit later on when she's going to catch anything I'm looking forward to that. We have to train for 2 days when I arrived at this incident which is taking place in Elsa k. Fast for South Yorkshire and North Darvish is news. Not to move out of the focus through soon so we'll give you the full lowdown on the I'm getting quite excited because it means I'm going to save a lot in action when he found out what troubles me before all that. Good morning make Robbins was happening well we have the usual slow traffic that we tend to have a. Around this time each morning of the moment so between the Jordan top Parkway just south of Sheffield heading down towards just a few roads out the bottom Parkway is looking quite slow and Medicaid to towards the same roundabout a bit of a queue there father north adding in disheveled is looking quite busy to justify the road as you head up towards Ms Brook Park Road that looking a little on the slow side as
