But we start this hour with the latest u.s. News from c.b.s. . This is c.b.s. News on the hour. I'm Pam Colter President Trump is getting regular updates on the collision between a train carrying Republican members of Congress and a garbage truck train accident was a tough one his tremendous job. The They're proceeding to their conference speaker Paul Ryan and his family were among those on the train heading to a g.o.p. Retreat in West Virginia Arizona Senator Jeff Flake and certainly a somber mood recently starred about those seriously injured the deceased and that some were pretty bruised up one person in the truck was killed and 6 other people were taken to the hospital one in critical condition President Trump was overheard telling a member of Congress. Night that he was going to release that g.o.p. Memo alleging f.b.i. Bias despite justice department of Jackson's C.B.S.'s David Portnoy in a statement to news organizations the f.b.i. Says it has grave concerns about material omissions of fact in the Republican drafted memo The bureau says those omissions quote fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy c.b.s. News confirms director Christopher Ray has communicated his objections to the documents released directly to the White House Louisiana health officials are worried an already bad flu season will get worse during Mardi Gras it's really bad Dr Frank Well it is the immunization director for the Louisiana Department of Health he says with many people huddling together at parties or parades it could take the flu outbreak to even higher levels we are on track to have probably more than 700 deaths in the easy end of this year from the flu Dr Welch says he has never seen a flu season like this and is pleading with people to get flu shots Chris Miller for c.b.s. News New Orleans teams of law enforcement officials have been working for months to ensure the safety of those who attend the Super Bowl on Sunday homeland security secretary Kirsten Nielsen went to see the preparations in Minneapolis due to its size its scope it is and can be an attractive target and we don't have any credible or specific threat Intel but we will continue to actively monitor channels with our international partners that early morning super blue blood moon got rave reviews from Sky watchers in Los Angeles yeah it's pretty cool and I thought it was insane it was crazy to witness it a little eerie a little coffee stained spectacular for sure it was a combination of 3 lunar events that haven't been seen in the u.s. News not everyone was happy with the decision by Michigan stay. Trustees to appoint former Governor John Engler as interim president for the old ones due to decided that he wanted to speak on behalf of students and because he was not on the agenda well he decided to jump up on the trustees table. For necessities do not speak on behalf of staff or back. We would like to make that known to all the media and all the press there is this is nothing more than symbolic there's been no or a staffer back to comment on this vote I'm not going to school board since it was. Charlie Langton for c.b.s. News to try to make sure you fill your tank before visiting North Carolina's rococo Island the fuel provider for the island's only gas station shut off the pubs because the owner couldn't pay the bills the good news is a tank at last for months on the small island Pam Colter c.b.s. News and I just update from c.b.s. The hill and well the f.b.i. Has published a challenge the push by Republican lawmakers to release a controversial memo that claims to show bias at the agency against President Trump a statement released by the f.b.i. Said it had grave concerns about a missions of fact in the memo that had a fundamental impact on its accuracy Joining me now is Pat Morrison a columnist for the l.a. Times I know that Pat Heller returned high why is the release of this particular memo so controversial if a controversy all for a couple of reasons one it contains information about presumably because we don't really know about an ongoing f.b.i. Investigation into the possibility of Russian meddling throughout the prompt campaign and the f.b.i. Director Christopher Ray has gone so far as to call according to The Washington Post the White House chief of staff to ask him to intervene when President Trump who was caught on a hot mike at the after the State of the union saying he intends to release this memo and so there's the question of undermining the investigation and the larger issue of whether Congress is. In fact not acting as an independent government entity but is creating this kind of court all sunny terror around Donald Trump to protect him to undermine the credibility of the f.b.i. And protect Donald Trump in the event there are indictments that come close to him out of the smaller investigation have we any idea who actually wrote this memo. We do not there are bits and pieces that about the content of this particular memo but the bits and pieces are exactly what the f.b.i. Has evidently been concerned about that it's been very selectively compiled to show pieces of information that reflect badly on the administer it badly on investigation and badly on the f.b.i. And the Democrats say we have our own memo but the committee which is run by Republicans as a majority will not allow us to release it but our memo would flesh out some of this and put context to these points and that would presumably lead to potentially at least lead to the next stage in the Russia collusion inquiry as well which it evidently would and which is something that of course Donald Trump would like to stop and his supporters in Congress would like to stop the f.b.i. At this point has its hands tied it can't address any specifics in the memo which may be released as early as Thursday because in doing so it would create the same problem by releasing confidential classified information that it says is the issue with this memo in the 1st place so the all the f.b.i. Has been able to do is issue kind of an extraordinary statement Priore seeking to head this off at the pass saying that there are grave concerns about in accuracies and omissions in this memo which is only 4 pages long and which brevity itself suggests that there may be a problem with that an aide to President Trump says the memo will be released pretty quick in his will why didn't I was a man or a woman making those claims did you see that right do you think we're lucky to see this fairly soon I think so I think Donald Trump enjoys sort of playing the fish at the end of the line here and this is a very big fish indeed but it it's something that Congress certain members of Congress and this committee in particular the Republicans would like to have released and Donald Trump would evidently like to have out there he has already fired one f.b.i. Director he has made every effort to undercut his attorney general the man in the judge. This department who is in charge of the smaller investigation is a man that that Trump has very little respect for you ask him whether he's on his quote unquote team rather than being for Team United States government the Justice Department supposed to operate independently especially on these issues that touch on the White House is it the case I mean this this is going to be old Sonny unuseful President Trump says he just doesn't sing from his message from the State of the Union is that it is but I think that there was a kind of blandness to the State of the Union message and and they can always and they in fact have used this streaming online to raise money and if you watch the all live stream of the state of the Union speech there was a very quick call like a Jerry Lewis Telethon underneath saying who has contributed how much money to President Trump so I don't think that it's distracting in a way that is to the White House disadvantage because already we see on Twitter I've seen people challenging the journalism in this saying well the f.b.i. Didn't really say that this was a problem the f.b.i. Didn't say that this is classified and they shouldn't be releasing it you were just making that up so the White House is in a way laying the groundwork to challenge the credibility of the f.b.i. To challenge the credibility of anything that comes out of the mall or investigation and doing it in this particular fashion so it has Congress in its corner in the past the f.b.i. And the White House has also been in conflict and the f.b.i. Has have tended to come out victorious who do you think will win this time. The f.b.i. Has a long standing reputation. Certainly hasn't the Watergate era of being independent standing apart and and being able to challenge the White House and challenge Congress as to in this case by setting up the f.b.i. As an adversary to Donald Trump and his plans and wishes that maybe the f.b.i. That. That Morrison from the l.a. Times thanks so much to do for speaking to us here on up all night just coming up to 60 minutes past 2 let's find out what's making the headlines in Chile with our correspondent Jane chambers she began earlier by telling me a story about a major land donation project to the Chilean government this is a massive story right down in Patagonia already peaceful part of Chile the south of Chile and this is about you know 25 years worth of work so what happened someone could Doug Tompkins and he actually founded North base and they came billionaire and he then kind of turned his back on that and wanted to get back to nature and was really inspired by some trekking and mountaineering he done in Chile and he decided back in the ninety's to buy up vast swathes of land along with his wife Kris Tompkins who is actually big in Patagonia outdoor gear as well so to kind of moguls and Michelle it was very very difficult for them when they came to Chile and people were really skeptical about it when I spoke I was actually in Patagonia when this big donation was being handed a on Monday she was doing that to President Michelle Bachelet and she spoke about the days in the early ninety's when we started with pummeling park it was quite difficult and we were to foreigners buying up large tracts of the in temperate rainforest so we were called the couple who cut Chilean have we were accused of creating what we said were. Lansford people thought that they were perhaps nuclear waste dumps for the United States or a new Jewish state even though. We were raised as Anglicans. And that we would perhaps take all the cattle out of that region and replace them with American bison So essentially the couple are environmentalists they want to preserve this land for the good of nature Absolutely but that's not how they were perceived initially but with time people have come to understand what they want to do and it's a very big deal I mean what they've done is they've handed over 1000000 acres and they've actually persuaded the Chilean government to hand over 9000000 more so they've created this huge network of Parklane simpatico 5 new parks are being created so you know it's a very very big deal for t.v. This huge donation and what's going to happen but as you can imagine there are still tensions of the salmon farmers who aren't happy about this land being used for conservation and there are big hydroelectric dams which they managed to get stopped but people still want to take back the land and still not some of them are not happy with what it's been used for what sort of land actually is this what are we talking forests of farmland what kind of land is it it's a real mix I mean where they are on this week in the Patagonia park that's kind of jagged mountains and lakes and streams and snow capped mountains and pump land with things like they're called they're like llama like animals they're looking after and then other bits of kind of deep cold rain forest and forest so a real a very diverse ecosystems lots of different types of lands I mean the thing about Chile is so diverse you've got the driest desert in the world up north thing glasses down south and this is very much down south so they're kind of mountains in the cold and that kind of thing and of course Doug Tompkins widow he was the real sort of energy behind this idea was to. Absolutely I mean it's interesting talking to people about him I think he was a kind of Marmite type of person people were really inspired by him but he was it seems very very keen on detail nothing escaped his notice he said no detail was too small and he was the one who made it all happen and was a real energy behind it all and very sadly 2 years ago he actually died in a kayaking accident so it was a really it was a really tough day on Monday you know he should have been there many tears were being shed he's actually mean buried at the park so a lot of people went to the cemetery to pay their respects lots of her friends were there and when I spoke to her after this big cemetery with President Bashir that there and all these people and the grandchildren what she said she took she seemed very moved my husband was really the visionary for today's events and he died in a kayak in accident 2 years ago in one way I think I absolutely turned the heat up on realising this vision because I didn't know what else to do in the absence of a man from whom I had been in the separable for so many years the love that he had for a wild nature was really a manifestation of today's event this then as you say a manifestation of the way that this couple has now become known in Chile and indeed in many respects loved intially. Absolutely there is a real love for them I mean so many people were there at this ceremony so many people saying what an incredible thing that they're doing as the this is the biggest private donation that's ever been seen in Latin America it's a huge huge deal and yes they have many supporters I mean as I mentioned some people aren't as keen on them I mean there was an invitation that went out to the local mayor for the ceremony and he didn't accept it because he feels t
