President Trump enjoyed a surprisingly successful trip to Paris last year where he apparently got on famously with the new president of the republic and I knew on my call what he manifestly enjoyed was the traditional parade through the middle of Paris on Bastille Day last year's parade was opened by a 145 u.s. Soldiers and Marines participating for the 1st time in in on are of the scintilla of the entry of the u.s. News. Well The Washington Post 1st reported it and the Pentagon has confirmed that President Trump has asked officials to start planning for a military parade which would take place later this year in Washington Pentagon spokesman Charlie Summers told reporters that they Pentagon is aware of the request and looking at possible dates Mr Trump who received 5 deferments from the draft and has never served in the armed forces has dreamed of showing off the United States military prowess in a large public display since he went to Paris last year to see the Bastille Day parade and he always speaks of his support for veterans praising them frequently and we're joined now by Vienna Barragan good Buzz Feed News national security correspondent who covers the Pentagon and also by John Hall Worth who is the communications director for American that since the service organization I'd like to say hello to both. Iran thanks for that a very good to have you both and I really appreciate it Vieira let's start with you make sure we get the story straight is it any clearer when this parade might take place or what sort of a parade it was going to be. It is not much clearer and there really isn't is because straightforwardly the military doesn't particularly want to do it you know today the defense secretary Mattis was asked about it at the White House where he was speaking and he said that they're considering many options and once they have assembled those options they're going to present them to the president that was all he would say inside the Pentagon you know there's a lot of resistance to that idea you know mainly because traditionally that the u.s. Doesn't do these kind of parades and they usually only do them if they have something to celebrate the last time was in 1901 after the Gulf War So it seems to a lot of people that it is in bad taste to do it when you know there's still a lot of u.s. Troops dying in Afghanistan and a lot of other wars that are still happening a lot of conflicts and you know a lot of veterans organizations saying that this money should be could be abused better so overall there hasn't been a lot of appetite for this and it looks like the White House was buying themselves a little bit of of room to say that maybe it's not going to be this grand parade with tanks and troops but maybe it's going to be some other display of appreciation for the military that's what it seemed like today they were trying to kind of walk it back a bit and is that coming from Sarah Saunders who's who's actually coming from of the White House yes I was coming from Sarah Sanders today Abe but also like I said from the military itself they weren't jumping to give us any option you know to do to show enthusiasm for it they were just saying they were assembling many kind of a range of options for the president to pick from. Well I'd sure we've got somebody here from a veterans organization John Howard what do you make of the idea of of a parade Well at 1st blush people tend to see it through the eyes of trying to divine what President Trump's motivations are and I think that's maybe wrong headed I think an objective look about whether or not the costs and benefits of a parade kind of. You know I think that it could be a very positive thing see our nation. Is we have a declining population of people who are eligible to serve in the armed forces who meet the requirements and among those we have a declining population of people who are actually willing to do it and the trend has been in that direction for a really long time such that in 101520 years from now we may not be able to sustain an all volunteer force so I don't think that it's necessarily so off base. That we might want to celebrate the truth groups in front of our whole society and kind of instill a sense of duty and service in some of some of the people who might be the future of our military even so even if as we are reminds us you know people are in service at the moment in Afghanistan and in some very very difficult places in the in the military service of the United States yes absolutely that's still true and I think that they they bear a lot of the burden of a military that. Is strained you know of a military that is having difficulty recruiting and whatnot because they do it more deployments you know they go back to back they do more often I think that it's you know it may not be the military already has an extensive budget for recruiting and for marketing and for community relations and things like that the military just spent millions of dollars to fly jets over the Super Bowl and that was held in a dome you know so by by that rationale you know is long as this parade does not come at the expense of programs that should rightly be a higher priority it might not be a terrible idea especially as an investment in the way our society views its military as long as it's done as a celebration of the troops and not seen through a political lens you know it could very well be more beneficial to you know recruiting and retention and just our society really celebrating our troops certainly a greater benefit than flying aircraft over a don't insuperable Varos anybody actually talking at the Pentagon about how much it might cost or how much would need to be set aside for it. Not yet I haven't been able most of us haven't really been able to get those Like I said because it's they're still very very early planning stages so they don't know exactly how much it would cost and they also don't know where that money would come from like I said the last $1.00 that was done in Washington d.c. Well that's about it was $991.00 under President George h.w. Bush and that one was about $12000000.00 And you know it was interesting when I pointed that out. You know Twitter and places like that I got a lot of reaction from people who were there in 1901 who said that that was completely different because you know they were showing off you know some of the hardware that had won them this war and that you know that had been a good thing the same people who you know a lot of them are objecting to doing it now and I think John's completely correct I think a lot of the reason is because they would support it in order to be kind of you know even if it costs money to be a show of appreciation for the troops but you know a lot of former commanders a lot of very high up military officials have expressed concern that you know the president hasn't really proved that it would be to support the troops a lot of them are saying that you know they're a bit concerned that it's you know for his own idea of grand jury and you know because he wants to kind of to be a celebration of his leadership of the military and not as much the troops themselves like let's start with you John I mean the the idea I think in the is a I think he's absolutely correct I mean what's important is that regimes have military parades don't they I think that's why it's such an important distinction here. You know. I think that it could be a very good thing as long as it's done the right way for the right reasons and I think the right way for the right reasons is in celebration of our troops who have deserved their moment in the sun. In front of the American people. I think that's the right reason and the right way to do it and I think it's done that way you know it's further reinforces the concept of service to our nation in American ism and patriotism by you know by celebrating the troops but if it's done in these other ways yeah it could be bad and with this work would this washed you think John with people you know just back from shall we say Afghanistan or other places you know places where they've been in the summer really hey situations would they be comfortable taking part. You know I can actually speak for them I don't know and I know that when I got back from the war in Iraq. Going on parade was the last thing on my mind. Yeah I heard of it as well when I was asking people you know there was a lot of of older veterans saying that it was they felt that these troops were owed this respect because you know they've been fighting these wars for 17 years and there's no end in sight and just because they weren't given a clear policy goal to achieve wasn't necessarily their fault and they should still be honored but you know I heard a lot of very interesting heard very few people who have recently come back who who said they would particularly want to participate in not because they don't support having appreciation for the troops but a lot of them I heard a lot of kind of snarky or responses like you know I will I will March the day that the war in Afghanistan is over or I will March the day that my you know my Iraqi interpreter is let into the country like he was promised you know but there was a lot of still a lot of raw feelings and anger at the way that this this war is progressing and and you know people were kind of saying there is not a ton to celebrate of course celebrate their service but in terms of having a kind I think because in the u.s. It's tied to the idea of victory. There is a bit of a double edged meaning there it's true historically we've only actually had these parades to commemorate victory and clear and decisive victory. Well equipped obviously there's a lot to be discussed here and one other point John just a sort of a last thought I mean the the British not to kind of buying a drum but the British franc good doing them in the. The Army is good ceremonial you know and the Royal Marines were are very good at doing this kind of thing it's not ever been a kind of a manic. You know highly polished drill in a parade. No no not really now in in the military of course there are always parades there are always markings in formations and when I was in I was a part of many of them. But what we're talking about here is on a scale that is unusual. Unusual as it is we will probably hear more about this out there saying thank you very much to both of you thank you thank you for having us but well now to a kind of unreality but a very offensive sort of unreality to. It's the it's the latest thing on the Internet and it's called the fakes and if you haven't come across it that may be because you don't hang around and in the right kind of person or graffiti channels where it has been most prevalent in the last couple of weeks that the faces of famous actresses are superimposed over par in models doing the sort of t
