Dot co dot u.k. In about half an hour's time I'll tell you who are looking for today for structures Most Wanted coming next we have a bonus for you you know cool See the thing we do on Monday morning where we are talking depth to someone about their life and and experiences and sometimes you have to talk to people when they're available. And you'll find out why this morning's guest is our new vitalist breaking the Malaysia 196 as you say. To. Keep. Going. Like. That. You could. Just. Ask you a. Us guy. Was. Later found out that. The best things in life are free. I went to an event in. Another county I need that I need to point this out likely. To me actually. This telling the story I'm not sure whether I should but now start talking historic not really know I went to event in the other county a couple of weekends ago and the and present at this event was the male of the town in question the mayor is actually co-counsel and Janet Jackson just wanted to keep getting people coming up to her saying well if you done to of done for me lately if not I'm kind of disappointed the cools the heat we can't speak radio shop show you again I on. Monday Well it can be whenever we want to do it particularly if the person that we want to get in the cool see is only available in a particular for a particularly a short window of time hence a bonus for you for you today we've been trying to get Sean Kelly in for a cool see interview for the last couple of years but it's not happened yet because his job in Formula one motor sport means you spend most of his time either in America or read traveling the world however he's back interrupted for one weekend so we had to work to get him in and we weren't aware of this until he turned up with us in the field in Builder Friday morning show of like so much company Thank you yes nice they were in warmer circumstances you are on the hillside last week it was exciting moment I want to watch in the cooling towers come down it was I mean I said to many people this is a just a uniquely Shropshire event was and I said you know if you if you from as far away as Birmingham you wouldn't have really got the significance of it yanks and those of us who grew up here yeah you know it's not it's not something you see you know in a promotional brochure now you'll recognize all that's on Bridge Yeah yeah so for us it was kind of like it was like any thing like if you had you have to be in the gang to get their significance only you live in America your rig you travel the world working in Formula one. But it was purely by happenstance that you happened to be back for when the cooling towers being demolished Yeah I mean I. Travel and everything like 6 months ago for former walkers as as a former one fans will know that the calendar is is issued a year in advance you know so I was like Ok Abu Dhabi's happening December 1st right Ok I'm going to go back to structure that week visit family friends and that's my Christmas visit and then I saw hey wait a minute the morning I get back. They're blowing up the armored cooling towers so I really kick myself if I don't go to that exactly it's the end of an era there so I'm really glad that I did I wasn't expecting to and came to you on the hillside there just as cold as we were told by Walters and hundreds of other people in the drizzle Yeah yeah but it was a good it was a curiously good morning it was a fantastic we haven't had a fantastic time so short how did the garden trip to end up working in Formula one . I am frequently asked that question. To be honest I sometimes wonder how it happened myself I think a lot of there was a lot of tenacity involved and a lot of stubbornness refusal to. To give in to the notion that couldn't happen yeah I see it started I always say when I tell the story I was inevitable it was a woman involved in the beginning as I had all these stories begin and I had a girlfriend who lived in the us and I used to have to travel back and forth so I use a job at the end of 2000 to get laid off from my previous job and I needed a job that still allowed me freedom of movement but right couldn't do an office job and still have my relationship so cold called the u.s. Broadcaster who knew me didn't know me from anybody I had no experience in f one but I was a massive fan and I wrote that I think I can offer my services to you it was kind of one of those sort of moment we think I put the phone out that you'll never hear from them again. And to my astonishment 2 days later they called back and they said well what do you want to do I said well actually I everybody knows me as I was like that the guy yells at the t.v. Tell the companies why and they said this one they said that. I think I can do that job for you so I put your little bit ahead of the broadcast so that's how it started. At the. 1st year and I love telling this to I love telling this is a story to people who are aspirants particular from here you know the 1st year I made the equivalent of like 5000 pounds right that was my entire income for that year so it was like being worse than a Student Yes You know I actually wrote about was convinced it was going to work out you see this is the big ticket I'm going I'm going to take it to the to the ball Yeah I'm going to make the most of this and after the 1st year I should have got my establish my reputation in the u.s. Which is why I still live in the u.s. Now. And then I started offering the same services stats and info on everything to the international broadcasters and 2 of which exist to this day new competitors of the b.b.c. Of n.z. . And now I work for 20 broadcasters and also I work with former one themselves on different things so. It started in 232029 I don't 17 years like getting a real job so. Well done me. There are lots of people who like watching Formula One there are a lot of lot of people who Formula One fans Not everyone though as dived as deep into the interest that this sticks in the end of the facts and figures for as long as in even before you did this job as you what was it about Formula One and what was it about the the numbers the data that the got you excited I think I've always been a numbers guy right because I started watching f one in 1970 when I was a prime school I used to go to I went to Wilford and from school hello to anybody associated with the flow. And even at Wilfred Owen. You know we would have cars that the rest of the kids in my class would know by their sponsor name yes you know back then it was cigarette sponsors was sort of off the air is going to jump from yes or whatever you feel like you know I would know it as oh that's the Lotus $98.00 you know and yeah I thought everybody else was as clean as I was I thought everybody was as engaged as I was it's many years to realise actually other people have actual lawyer. And. To other stuff. So my mom always used to say to me that you know where you should call the b.b.c. You know they're going to need somebody to help Mary walk around this job and I said yeah yeah right like anybody would ever do that job course as is often the case Mom knew best yet and eventually she was proven right in that regard so yeah what can I say I should listen to her so you know really do you do you have endless folders on your laptop or is it all stored in your mind all this all of that crucial crucial facts and info a lot of people are asking that and honestly the 1st the 1st part is your mind because you look at you know I imagine if there's somebody out there who watches football for instance and you see an unusual event in in football like you think or any unusual scoreline or so you know sub comes on the scores after the penalties you know when's the last time that happened sometimes you know it and sometimes you know the answer anything Ok if I don't know the answer I know that Stephanie something people want to know the answer is yes so that's where you start there's also a very well known industry database called Forex which most people use as their source material and then I have my own personal stuff just it just in x.l. And everybody's always surprised at how low far it is they think it's going to be this incredible thing that it delivers spits out any information to know but you know if you don't if you've got Microsoft Office you already have it yeah the thing is you don't want to be blinded with science when you want to watch a sporting event you're not watching a thesis on mathematics you want it to the analogy which uses that in broadcasting the job I do is akin to the ball boy at Wimbledon if I'm doing it properly you didn't notice it happened right that kept the action going and added to the action without distracting from it so when a race is underway. How when where are you what are you doing are you surrounded by screens are you looking at the you watching what's happening how do you divide your attention between what's happening on the track and what you're what you're looking at well as surprising as it sounds we don't actually look at physically look at the racetrack when we're broadcasting right cause we got so many screens to look at. You've always got to remember the viewer at home is watching the pictures on the screen Yes so you can say Oh I see out the window this is happening Ok great There you see does not has no idea who took tell us about what we're actually seeing. Often I'll be in the t.v. Truck which is just for anybody's never been in want it's a portable production office you know you've got the control room you got like 15 screens and you can hear every yelling at each other and it's like pandemonium in there and it's it's very it's not great if you have like if you're an a.d.t. Type of person who gets like Everybody be quiet Yeah there's a lot of that a lot of shanking and right lawyers and it's not a good environment for that but that's where usually watch a race from Abu Dhabi was a little bit different actually did it from the paddock clubs always right above the Mercedes carriage Iraq which is quite interesting you know I wanted to point to have especially as Lewis Hamilton won the race and I just happened upon his celebration so I got an Instagram video of me not me with Lewis Hamilton but little time to lecture the person in front of me you know they're celebrating with Peter Bonnington who's is well known race engineer who you hear on the team radio Yeah and like I'm the 1st on the next one the person standing next to them and I thought but I record this because a No one will believe me actually like exactly I need to video me being thrown probably not supposed to be. One things and so yeah you get some unusual perks of the job there Sean Kelly with me in the coast this morning on b.b.c. Radio show it is an enormously glamorous industry and it's and it to which a lot of people would love to be part of. You wanted to be part of it and now you're Is it as glamorous and on a day to day basis and in travelling around the world meeting all these people is it a glamorous as it appears or is this log is the lone going to go mode country now. It's a little bit of both right it's certainly the prep time you know when you go to a race it's very glamorous Yes. Particularly on race day because that's when you get your a list celebrity showing up you know you David Beckham's And you know people they will smith with you know just loads of Hollywood people. But also you know as with anything anything in life it's you know you when you win anything by the preparation you do and that's a lot of hours sitting at your kitchen table poring over every last detail making sure that we've done this we don't this we've done this you know so then you go to the event in much the same way as a sportsman would you know you when you're on the training right you know when in the game it's the preparation so we do that and then you know I also entertain guests on site so I will go on for 15 minutes about a case of battles on this look for this you know it's our strategy going to be this take a look for this thing on the wire it's do you know that off the top your head will cost you don't necessarily know of that we had you spent a week received you know just reporting your findings to the audience. So it's not glamorous in terms of the prep time but when you go there it never gets old yeah it does get old when you're the airports and you think I'm in Melbourne right now like a 16 hour flight to wherever next I don't know what time zone it is. A struggle with that this week coming from where I live in California to Abu Dhabi which is 12 hours time change and you're here for I was trying change I'm on the opposite direction the opposite direction do I wake up at 4 in the morning I think where I am I don't know which fork is it what day is it I don't know yet but to me that's a 1st world problem that's a problem I love to have here while what I can't believe I'm getting away with is still you know in the car you've been doing it Formula One has changed a lot in fact it's changed quite dramatically from one year to the next and then and then the following year how do you keep up with all that. And it went away I mean if you're so embedded in a sport in or in any industry it's just the changing of Tommy as you know basically it into much the same ways as radio has probably changed since you began you know that you just keep up with the evolution of it would be different it would be difficult to come back to it if I'd been gone for 15 years going to think Ok where's my vinyl records I think yeah exactly we've kind of moved along from that now yes sorry to tell you. You know have you have any view is of any listeners a written in or postcard Oh yeah you know those are the days doesn't happen so much now but yeah the constant evolution you know I look back on stuff I did in 2003 think I would never do it like that now yeah so prehistoric. But you have to keep up with it you can't you know you've got to change or die don't you have to said if you change with the times you know the times change or you know that you move it's not you move the times will you with all of you and they. Do you have a favorite fact or piece of information or one that you've that you can remember pulling out of that maybe even surprised it was surprised yourself that you remembered it but it kind of just the right moment yes one does stick in my mind and that was in the 1st season 2003 and we were the races it Mum's uneasily and Michael Schumacher won the race and it was by my calculation the fastest growing Prix that had ever been run in grand prix history and this is my 1st year I'm not I'm still like a rookie you like you press everyone and I said Susie stop the clock you know that's the fastest growing have a hunt just on 154 mile per hour average send that to where we set it on the air before we even reach the podium stop the slow down lap and then we went out we got off the air this is on American television yes we got off the end there was no further discussion of it we were looking at the news websites no one else mention it we got like 12 hours along and still no one had mentioned it I thought I'm sure this is right but why is no one else at it it's like really stunned. Me neither No I just sent us all under the bus here made us look stupid not to send a grovelling email saying I'm sure that I've done the calculation like 5 times I'm sure it's right but no one said it so maybe I'm wrong so there was a lot of introspection and everything here the next morning it was reported in the rest of the media that the made major Most of what we did that was the fastest growing free in history. On that yes one of the coin as it were. It kind of made my career and you're like oh wow that was when you had it as soon as you cross the checkered flag Yeah but he took you no one else on the 24 hours yeah it was like Ok we need this guy to do our t.v. Stuff because he's a long way ahead of everybody else here knows what to look for immediately and that's the thing there are plenty of people in in any sport who know a lot about the history of it but can you replicate on live television when you know Ok we've got x. Amount of 1000000 people who will adjudicate especially on Twitter night oh no of course you will be corrected instantly if it's wrong to say you have to be yet to be dead right has to be before the audience realizes that you have to be super quick So that's where my sort of unique selling point is yeah. Other things you do triathlons and tell me about that yes I I'm still waiting to get my like 25 meter swimming certificate from the short strokes. Which I never got as a kid because I couldn't swim how do I fell in the can help part like when I was 6 and in Birmingham and I had a lifetime of immersion to water. And like I didn't like for years I didn't stick my head under the shower it was going to g
