Cause I'm going to have a. Pretty good. A. J. Welcome to the program it's roughly in country it's Friday night and that is of course the all mystical son of John Prine Well I get to have a real stand a track from the tree of forgiveness Jones beautiful all of this year and say You're very welcome to the country show on that particular track is significant because John's been nominated for a couple of awards at this year's U.K. Amerikana awards festival in Hackney and the end of January at the end of January 31st of John are to be precise and that whole Americana fest takes place and me as a true celebration of the music that we play on a Friday night here and so we will talk to the organizer and the woman behind it Stevie Freeman on the program tonight we'll get her on to talk us through the nominations for this year's to say John Prine heavily represented all sorts of amazing people coming to the festival as well and so we will talk to Stevie Freeman about this year's U.K. A.M.A. Awards and there's so much to discuss I can tell you the nominations were broadcast live on social media from the borderline in London I think it was Monday night Wednesday night actually and it was really amazing to see the names coming through and when names you've seen and known and loved and supported for years coming through it was a really powerful thing and it has always terrific celebration of rich music in its widest possible sense I was really delighted to see fellow countryman Ben Glover up there representing he's made. So many great albums down the years his latest one sure bond has been acknowledged by the the U.K. Americanas has been nominated for Album of the year I think deservedly so and to say we'll talk to Stevie Freeman get the whole load on and he's coming to the awards he's been nominated to do that later on the program but I want to play a truck or 2 from shore bond tonight the Celebrate band lovers nomination in the U.K. I am ace and this is a track which features melodeon among begins 3 incredible northern towns together this is Northern Star us. Bank on a terrific truck from his all I'm sure bond is northern stars been nominated in the U.K. Album of the Year category for the U.K. Amerikana happen in the End to John who wish him all of our best more about those awards and nominations and how you can have your say. That as well let me talk to the woman behind the U.K. American is Stevie Freeman and the 2nd hour of the program now I thought featured mom again I'm a login and mom again will also be with myself next to somebody and actual fact that things in the fluffy dot Center for the Atlantic sessions I do a brunch there every year and it's a terrific way to celebrate the end of the little Festival which runs over the weekend and celebrates Irish music in almost many forms and we have our brunch we have by day to me of music from the likes of this and this occasion of mom again get Philippa arborist and this lady KIRO Neil this is from Kara's new album Our Oh I think this is just beautiful and this is a terrific song Herden and this is. Which is on the new album are all the great trucks if you listen regularly to the Wednesday night program you'll have heard me play our own quite a bit there's a song here co-written with run moments welfare mistake which is absolutely brilliant to runs our special guest next Wednesday night here in the evening show for now though this is hurting from Cure O'Neill and plan as part of the wonderful Atlantic sessions and ports toured port rush next weekend get along to you will not be disappointed folks. It's a beautiful song and those references to the region dropping on the Windows Phone It's kind of appropriate here the studio at the B.B.C. In Belfast I can see the rain ruling on the peons here and it's a very wet and windy and horrible night frankly and Belfast but the musical keep you warm the same as look at Snelson and promise of the real and forget about Ga Ga strike and look it's Nelson acknowledged at the U.K. And may awards as well good to see that we'll talk to Steve Freeman about those nominations which were announced this week later on in the program also figure and the American the U.K. Awards in 2019 will be rust and Kelly this is from a dying star this is Mockingbird and the other half of the muskrats lost in Cali case he was in Belfast just delivered a and no play on the Waterfront Hall to get the sale this time around but. Dr record's Superbus a real stand the truck for me this is Mockingbird after this we're going to be talking to a good friend off the evening show a good friend of the V.C. Really will start it is the legend that is Mr said Griffin a roots rocking a one off and he's back in Belfast tomorrow night he's playing the American Bar do not miss I'm spinning few years since it has been here of course of legacy that he has with the wonderful old country bands like The Long writers at all Piers the underground thing and wonderful bands like the cool porters and just everything said Stone is worth paying attention to will catch up with said because he recently said goodbye to the Cole Porter's but the Long Riders are back with new material on the have some fun these changes but a child from said Grafton looking ahead to his gig tomorrow night in Belfast not before us and Kelly of course. Country You know who you are you're listening to Ralph McLean on B.B.C. Radio all that time well spent. I was assigned as a long writer something you hear very often on this program I like to ensure that the long writers get a regular play on the rough and plan contracts and that's why I'm very pleased to say that said Griffin long writer Supreme of course Cole Porter in his time very fine solo artist joins me on the line from London said whoa are you absolutely fine Ralph good to hear your voice it's good to hear from you you're coming back to Belfast you're here in fact on Saturday night at the American Bar you enjoy a good already stripped down to I do I've always loved the Emerald Isle I've always with Brett I've had a good time for the 1st and I was there and I think part. I mean it's a lot different in the subsequent 33 years kind of had the good times the 1st time I laid on the 1st time was with the legendary Long Riders was in the. It was and there was. Cold Queen Margaret University is that right Queens University there was a Queens University that it that's it was a bunch of great gigs and I just I don't know it was one of those places where we really like I mean you know some place Chicago spank some crazy places Ireland we really love it just seem to works isn't one of those crazy places you lay and it just works yeah the people understood my take is always been my kind of music the Celts get and so wherever I am in the Celtic nation I don't have to explain its citizens to talk to you because a lot of things have been happening you've kind of laid the cool porters to rest but I don't know the long writers there is much to discuss there are new material to be discussed and also you're going on plan these gigs like Saturday night and both fast and the American Bar fine venue that it does so lots of things happen and so let's start with the end of the Cole Porter's because I don't know if we've spoken since but there was a big part of your life was known as 17 years of playing bluegrass acoustic folk whatever you want to call it with the cold porters see if anyone looks at all these are important and and I I was just tired I was beat and I knew that the next year would be a long writer's year and some people rushed me good solo shows and after 17 years of running the Cole Porter's I was just out of gas out of the woods it's nothing against the gang men and women boy and girl they were all great I love them all but just I was out of gas I was leading a band 17 years it took the fight outta me. What do you think was the best achievement What was your best moment with the Cole Porter's What do you look back on with most pride so well what I really like was when we go to places like Italy or Switzerland or Canada I knew it would work in America but you know and and walk on stage the best people know I you are and even at Rock best was are indie rock festivals much less a focus but we did really really well and you walk on stage the mandolin a fiddle on the banjo and even look at us. And that always made me proud blows body away with the 45 or 50 minutes from 2 to 5 o'clock in the aft of and they have no idea who you are at. First very very. The Cole Porter's on B.B.C. Radio also talking to himself said Griffin here on the show tonight he's in the American Bar folks in Belfast tomorrow night get yourself dined there never never anything less than a modul night when you're in the company has said. The Cole Porter is no more but great memories to be hard there but the Long Riders something that perhaps a lot of people thought would have been put to bed some years ago those reunion gigs and they they were really celebrate everything said I was down at the Dublin gig it was a fantastic night grid so it was just it was not kind of what kick started the new material thing because we have new all right now on the way. Yeah what happened was we had a really long story short is we had a roadie 35 years ago called Larry chat used to be the bass player Funkadelic he was down this looks we hired him as our bass roadie and we just loved it and he kept saying years later that I'll pay guys back and he got a job there was somebody else that then he got a job with Dr Dre and now he's Dr Dres main man and he's done very very well hanging out with Dre So he said I'm going to pay guys but he paid back by giving us a Dr Dre state of the art. Studio used by the sort of James Taylor's And and what Dave Grohl and 2 fighters used so anyway we recorded this album on being just for tuppence because Dre doesn't need the money and Larry Page is back and we've got a new album In The Long Riders will be playing next April and next September in Europe so look out for us and you kind of title put us all. Psychedelic country so old the name of the album is psychedelic country soul I like all those words separately and I like them even better together oh I'm really happy with very very happy the Bangles play on it. You know it's just it was a lot of old friends playing on it and it was just it was great and I had a wonderful time we mixed it stays tim's house in San Diego outside San Diego Ed your listeners will know he did a lot of Ramones albums like the revolves he did the Jeff Healy band he had a hit album with the Carlyle and he did about 3 albums or at least 2 albums with the Smithereens beach in the late ninety's you find Bond you know yeah they were fine fine bands and in a chime of a reckon Barker comes to mind when you think of the smithereens as well great guys do lovely people and speaking of charming reckon Barker's The Bangles were always palls to want to know about whole L.A. Thing and it's seems like a nice. I was really pleased once this Paisley Underground thing which we were part of I was really part of a really warm and accepting scene where everybody was friendly I'm always amazed when I read someone's memoirs about members of the Sex Pistols and the Clash and the jam ID each other warily and work close and I'm always amazed how the New York scene in the late seventies it you know once people started making it some didn't it wasn't what it was C.P.G. Beason 75 and they were all friends and there was oh I think I thank God Lenny Kaye wrote an introduction to somebody book I think was Lenny day when he started about the great rock and roll scenes like this 96 Liverpool 1962 you know San Francisco late 66 spring 67 and he went on and on and always said he went. West Hollywood 190384 and yes that's that's May I was you know one of the cane pins of the old days the underground and it was a wonderful time so the Long Riders I mean it was just great Bangles Long Riders You know the Dream Syndicate and Green on Red and there are a lot of other bands that weren't part of our scene that we knew John Doe an ex seen of the band actually literally live around the corner figured literally lived around the corner Ben much attention Tom Payne Heartbreakers was a couple blocks away white Yoakum was about 8 blocks away 6 blocks away and it was just you could bump into these guys on the pavement in L.A. Spend testing. An early slice of the Long Riders here on B.B.C. Really were such a grip on the script of our good friend said Griffin on the line the American bar tomorrow night when you approach. Kind of acoustic it like a said to you depend on not if the the various bonds Bar Council is to address all the different areas if I do I remember I plan meticulously about the years to go for sums or spend BIG particular festival and in Italy Dan Stewart of Green on Red was on the bill a lot of other guys I knew and there was 3000 people in front of my little stage and I realized I'd left the setlist in this hotel down that I just thought you know I thought I just thought it was real quick if you've been in these bands and you've been playing gigs since 1972 if you can entertain these 3000 people for 50 minutes on your own your bum so I just when I do I did like the 1st song to the set and I remember that people shouted out stuff and you know I played long writer stuff and somebody shouted out feel a whole lot better by The Byrds and I played cat blah blah so yes I did it out of the great significance songbook you betcha looking forward to it it's going to be a fantastic thing and I hope you go well I will not be able to be there on Saturday night but I'll be there in spirit said I'll be there and thank the spirit as of course welling as we always knew I know we can be solo years somebody's going to be doing the long writers as a project the album's there and you'll be doing some dates but have you thought ahead or are you kind of taking it easy just are you resting knowing after all those years a band leading said well I'm only I did last Cole Porter's gig July 15th and I've only played 2 things since so I'm getting. Beat now to do something and I'll record a solo next year and we're hoping the long hours record again in 2020 or 2021 and just you know do it periodic glee but I you know you've done heard the last of me was just that cold worse thing 17 years are really running a band that really went for it I just was exhausted and I know a lot of the musicians listening to the show Ralph which you know is kind of your listenership I mean that demographic I mean they're not. Their heads think it tell me about tell me I thought up doesn't go lose years old those miles all the ins and but now I mean so many people I mean I'm hardly famous but so many people have some inkling you go and I go do gigs here and there and there's always somebody that shows up there's always that somebody I know it's almost like sometimes I feel like I'm not going anywhere I'm just going into a different room because every time I go into this different room somebody shows up I know OK I'm in Belfast right somebody might tell us when you're South Carolina you know you never know I mean I've played Hong Kong you know Sydney Australia I mean I've been all over the map and everywhere I go there's somebody else hey I'm so and so or maybe it's somebody that recognise you know just incredible so I really look forward I mean I really do I was over for chapter arts a few years ago and I don't think I've been over in about for a gig I mean for about 4 or 5 years you know what else but not for a husband who has been on it's ridiculous too long when the long writers are back in Europe hopefully they'll swing by heart and then we can get a full session with you guys sort of because we're booking April now for the long run as we're back September October. Belfast it's just crazy it's rebels but if you allow these say so rough they have a following there could I look forward to that that's going to be something Maggette in the meantime a fantastic night to be hot in the American bar down in similar time. Historic I went there as well in the old sailor ton ton and Belfast no better place to be Saturday night in the company of the legend that is so aggressive send Single that takes me right back and it's why I 1st fell in love I think with the sound of the long writers they married to a lot of the birds with the kind of passion and kind of explosiveness of the Clash as well know it so there was a grip mix and the long writers had it they just had it good to hear that they're coming back Nice to speak to our old friend said Griffin Bell for us tomorrow night Merrick and Bart Do not mess it it's a rare appearance in Belfast rare appearance in and by said GRIFFIN No I think it's in touch to say that I love the long writers but I wish well for play some Green on Red especially from the new free launch album which was the most country influenced effort wasn't 8 and I love it but again on red to said mentioned Green on Red there and yet through the wonders of technology all the way both the series and cassettes I was telling them in social media I'm not playing it off because said no I can tell you about originally and cassette way back in the day this is going on right from no free lunch time and nothing your request on the show way see how it works. Green on Red time and nothing but of a blast from the past and not just for Anthony requested a but for me as well I haven't heard that and years and something rightly says probably the most country inflected side of Green on Red the original release no no free lunch and a nice to play it again for you a couple of weeks back I was last week with 2 weeks back but I've been meaning to do this but I want to properly the very sad news of the passing of the man they call the Swamp Fox one of the great songwriters I think Tony Joe White sadly passed away and very unexpectedly passed away had been and very good health by all accounts and he had just released a new album which we've been planned on the program and Tony had been a guest on the program down the years but very sad news that he passed away but we will play a proper tribute next week. On the program by Planet one of those vintage interviews with Tony Joe White Water songwriter Polk Sullivan A you think of you think of Rainy Night in Georgia and all those beautiful tracks so that he wrote a new fantastic record of his own songs as well but other songs that he wrote for Elvis things like I've got a thing about you baby just a great Southern soulful writer and the Amerikana style Tony Joe White Very sad news that he passed away given the weather tonight and the weather is there here in the north a barn that's measurable it's dark it's windy there are storms on the way on the rain as lossing against the window I can only play this to take a straw and the 9 o'clock Tony Joe White we remember Him we will have a full tribute next week but for now I his masterpiece I think are certainly one of them really not in Georgia. Radio one still. Going to. Do you pay who's $10.00 and pays prop up the conservative government have said they can't support Tories amaze current brags of proposals they're worried that the Prime Minister hasn't ruled out the possibility of Northern Ireland topping to follow some single market roo
