Dot co dot Hugh Carey Well it just seems at the moment doesn't it there's always something going on in the county especially in the center of York just how the food and drink festival going on all this week the New Media Arts Festival. With more than 30 events taking place across the city has been exploring some of the festivals installations and events one being a multistory car park. I'm just behind Piccadilly car park in New York is the multistory all next to top shop and Phenix I'm overlooking the river Fox all some geese are just swimming past this is where we're going to get some in move save theater yes it's taking place it's called Baba Yaga and it's part of the York media best of all time high and it's a creative director I have to say was your Mr car park Tom Well this is a really special one this one is by Hannah Davies one of Bruce and Jonathan Ito And they've developed a binaural sound installation with a performance in one of the most interesting weird perhaps lesser known buildings in the center of York I think you're right there to do a performance in a car park we're going to go inside the Piccadilly car park now which is a bit weird so what happens is part of the performance then so you'll be you'll be group a group to split into 2 groups and you'll be set off with your pair of headphones and you'll follow the story and follow the experiences of the main character as you go through the building now this involves a witch doesn't it yes so it's an historic tale it's a classic tale that they've read into. And Bruce has reinterpreted for the modern day York City Center especially uniquely this week so a scary ghost story in a scary car park in York this is what could possibly go wrong says it is that night isn't it isn't it is so it's a little bit scary but it's also really really interesting this building it has like a double ramp that's like it's a string of D.N.A. So just moving around this building you see the city from different angles and it's it's a pretty amazing experience I think once you park in here after doing this performance you'll definitely feel different about this building the thing is you'll be all quite tall I'm quite sure when I come into this car park to park the ceiling so really really low it doesn't make you feel quite it's oppressive isn't this bill. Absolutely yeah and it's really it's been really fun I think for Jonathan to make performance not for not for a theater where people are sitting down but for moving people around somewhere that maybe changes their perspective on on the world and moves their body and also the sound is particularly exciting so he talks about that his headphones is there it's headphones but it's fully binaural So what does that mean that I know my know basically you can feel very clearly people things voices noises moving from one side to the other so something might come up behind you something rushed past in front of you it definitely. Makes you feel slightly distorted but also really really inside the performance if people want to come along they went taking place it's taking place for the next few evenings here in New York there are still a few spaces left if you ARE York media. Quick smart you'll snap up the last couple of places so yes a very unusual performance taking place here in the Piccadilly carpark if you party before want to see the building and everything at a different light do come along your media continues until next Saturday events and installations throughout the city and details are at York media dot com There are some amazing events going on as well only recommend you check them out to see the car park where they are the only things I could think of for car parks is Robert Sowle the actor being thrown off a car parking Get Carter by Michael Caine. Not sure that counts as an artist good film my good film. When. I was. Well. It's. Moot. That way so those restrictions around step the road may slow you down above and Somehow you're. Last December retailers and care home bosses say they're worried by government B.B.C. Radio you. Leeds United have the chance to go back to the top of the championship tonight their face whole city and go into the game a point behind current leaders West Brom who played tomorrow. Scarbrough taker at home to will now be Internet in the verse take Premier Division Manager Steve Kittredge is hoping to see his team bounce back after a disappointing defeat on Saturday. Going to bounce back we've got to cut it for the play by Belgian block and at that point that we can if we don't get what we want. We don't think about it. My thought process I know will bounce but we've got to go. But your players. In these Division tonight Tadcaster Albion Hall's love bro while Pickering town visit us is united and in the northern counties east League Premier Division there's Britain and travel to thoroughly. In rugby league England have included $51.00 caps players in their 24 months squad for the autumn internationals against France and New Zealand they include Wakefield wing Tom Johnston and son Helen's prop Luke Thomson fullback Sam Tomkins is also returning to the squad after a 4 year absence. After Europe's Ryder Cup victory in Paris Captain Thomas beyond says Park Harrington would make a great skipper for the team in 2020 Harrington was one of beyond vice captains at the Gulf Nasional and he's told B.B.C. Sports he's one of the leading options for the events in the USA in 2 years' time beyond also believes Ian Poulter will lead the team in the future when he would be a captain one moved for him to. To lead his men it's as difficult it would be difficult for somebody like him to stand behind and do it because he likes to be right up front but he would be a great captain and pretty pretty motivational to thoughts so yes. That's. Getting out of my car. But I don't know that that necessarily what you will than a team sport it's not you know it is what you need isn't really but anyway which isn't a team sports generally defending champion the 2nd round of the European Masters in Belgium and the and when both Davis are also into the next stage and that spot for now there's more again at 5 o'clock but. Let's have a look at the weather try tonight with clear periods although cloud will increase later they have a nice low 6 Celsius 43 found I'd send a strong westerly with the wind the zing tomorrow rather cloudy weather little drizzle possible many of the Pentagon's turning brighter lights more specially in an area about the coast days high 16 Celsius 61 found in the moderate southwesterly looking at a Thursday mostly dry with some sunshine. Radio you'll. you'll return to the city just studies for another year we also know that it's the excitement level so high fresh as. It was. A long long time ago for me as soon as the Course will be out enjoying the nightlife of the city and there's the rub because we've seen in the past one way certainly in the city of incidence of students well tragic incidents of students finishing up in the river for instance after consultation then with students and local residents community marshals will now be taking to the streets of York for 2 nights a week offering help and support to both students and members of the public walking home late at night and joined in the studio now by James Durkan is the president of York University student union so we're Tell us about this is a sort of university initiative is a city initiative what well is it yeah so Street Wise is a initiative run by the university and funded by them and other people and the service kind of going to be based around very as a dental areas say marshals will be walking around providing assistance but also collecting data on kind of what activities happening on student nights and what you say they'll be focused on our main student nights which are Sundays and Wednesdays and they're kind of like also supported by the work that's going on in the town already and those are going to work I mean if you see some students a little unsteady on the on the I mean is this where the marshals will step in well so we've you see which are students union they already provide Marshall in in town or a support system called Knight safe so it's run by student volunteers they provide assistance to anyone that might need it they take pressure off the local services and connected with all the door staff as well so students can get home safely so these marshals will be located slightly further away perhaps almost collecting data to see why activity happens in the more residential areas outside the center of town so be able to provide assistance make sure people get home safely and just monitor why activities going on because it's freshers or has been freshers traditionally a time where you do let your hair down a little bit many people away from home for the 1st time a little bit of independence a perfectly natural that you might take something to lift a little excessive behavior perhaps but I actually was. The other day that maybe maybe the younger generation now a are not necessarily looking at alcohol as a perquisite of a night owl Yes really interesting actually so the University of York our colleges we've got college system they all provide freshers week up until a Friday and they actually provide an extensive list of sort of non coming events which are overly subscribe say from Laser Quest quizzes to karaoke them being gays if those events actually draw the more students in each year and it's really interesting seeing this shift away from the interesting clubbing going out perhaps because of financial pressures but also I think that increased health awareness as well and also the encouragement of a student to get involved in actually the greater provision by universities by student unions and more people are coming on today's events I think it's a really great thing to see it is I mean it's a real real sea change I want to sound like a senate judge nominee but. If it didn't include beer when I was a student I probably was going to be there. I mean what is that then what's what's been causing this the sea change you and I are I hope it down to I think financial pressures at the University of York our student union really keen to debate with the universe into kind of like demands upon them to look at their pricing whether it's tuition fees which obviously they don't have ultimate control of but accommodation and we really came to work with the unity of our city address costs so many students at York but also nationally are seeing increased Cross whether that be in fees or accommodation and actually the money that they've got left a very so minimal that they're not able to go and spend a pint by apply anywhere and of course it's a serious concern these days and I mean you know there's a university you're paying for it now and you've got to get something out of the 3 years and you really have got to make the most of us yeah and I think university in especially where so many other opportunities get involved so actually we've got more societies behead than any of the University of sports teams and all sorts of volunteering projects we've got 14 in the local community involved are actually seen. We're so caught up in that actually there's not necessarily a time or kind of like incentive to go out all the time for a drink OK So you got these community marshals in about helping students are members of the public and you're king to emphasize I know because there have been times where maybe the local population have been looking at students and going well muttering under their breath perhaps at some of the behavior but I know you're keen to get into the community and show what the university can do yeah I think it is something that as a sabbatical team we were off we were elected as 5 officers back in February we started in June and 1 of our main goals was actually to look at community relations that all good and I think they're growing every year I think we've done a lot in the last few years to work with the community I think this project is an example of meetings and feedback that's been responded to but we're actually came to reach out to our York sport president is really keen to involve the local community Ambrose's which is our big sports passed against Lancaster the biggest sports class in Europe so how we engage them in that and the university runs all sorts of community projects we've got the facts to have ideas which in amazing event many members of our community come down to I think we came to appreciate that even more as a student Gene and I suppose I think the thing is just remember that sometimes people have to get up at the border. Living next door to students want support it's a yeah and I think students are increasingly aware of that for certainly from the friends I know more and more people are keen to get on with their neighbors. Which are students union does provide guidance on how to get on with your neighbors but also how to help facilitate relations and I think it's a growing trend that we see students engaging with just realize how old. Was the best with the community Marshall's I wish you well with thanks very much for coming on thank you very much James Durkin there presidents of the York University Students Union B.B.C. In 15 minutes thank you very much. So we got
