Here we go with you good morning good Them morning good morning good morning and good luck to England's cricket as I know there is every point in playing the game you got to get it done the 5th and final Ashes Test starts today a preemptive cheerfully Thank you good morning and congratulations to play right Alan egg on his 1st novel is being published today I know I read that it was taking so long a good morning Congrats to the North Yorkshire restaurants making their debut in this year's Good Food Guide there's so many who got roots in their last models and carve the question in your memoirs Elson Whitby the Alice Hawthorne in one month and the plan our at school but you can have one on a share amongst yourselves Good morning to her band litany who will be joining Jarvis Cocker and the feeling to take rounds inheriting a couple of weeks' time at the World Cycling Championships Yes the E.C. Eyes album chatting to Beth from the band after half 8 they can have one of them as they got to get everybody to go again. It's coming up to 10 past are you listening to Georgie at breakfast and we have a shocking story for you this morning we're sharing this because it's an appalling example of verbal abuse intimidation of someone because of their race happened in broad daylight on a busy street it happened in North Allison now the person at the center of this is Asian and the news the area and they had just started a new job in town so you can imagine the testing the water there minding their own business walking down the aisle it's in High Street it was just a few days ago this is not the seventy's although all the eighty's and a passing car drew up beside them and launched into an awful volley a verbal abuse there were taunts there were insults animal noises and you know what I mention the seventy's and eighty's this happened just a few days ago right here in our county. I'm gobsmacked by this case we better than that the person on the receiving end of this abuse works in North Yorkshire County Council and their boss is Richard Webb now he's the county's head of adult social care and he is pulled by this he's been telling me exactly will happened they were walking along in the center north on a turn and a passing car. Someone down the window started shouting abuse making animal noises barking like a dog. Shouting you know taunts about the color. I'm throwing rubbish at them and then just driving off is this a 1st time that this person's experience this kind of thing I think something no this person's experience to elsewhere not in North Arlington or in North Yorkshire 1st time new job so you kind of thing all the things you want to go well for someone I make them feel welcome you know appalling thing to happen what how does this person feel now what kind of effect did this have on them so initially as you'd imagine as we'd all feel very shaken and you know frightened and scared. But they are incredibly resilient and resourceful and actually it's something about I'm going to put this to good effect don't know what that will be but I want to you know I want it really makes me kind of passionate about. Overcoming this kind of prejudice so that's where they are now I think the main thing is I mean our priorities is to support them as well why you here you know why you sitting in front of me. I just felt it was an outrage you know what kind of society what kind of community are we to to do that and it's only a small minority I'm not saying this is widespread but the fact that it even happens and people are saying you know the responses we're getting are people saying this doesn't happen in North Anna to know it never happened in North Yorkshire Well sadly it has and it does. And if I talk to other colleagues from different backgrounds elsewhere they've experienced it too not just in North Yorkshire but elsewhere so. So it's there within the body is myth and we need to read that is Richard Webb he is the head of North County Council's adult social care now here's the thing in this day and age it does beg a belief doesn't it and thank you for your messages about this Andrew is listening on the A one he says he is disgusted to hear about this incident in North us and says What is the world coming to an ally bridgeable saying what kind of society are we well I'm joined on the line now by Deputy Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police Phil Kane Now Phil is the 1st black and minority a minority ethnic person to hold that position and he's written a blog about his experiences growing up I'm very pleased to say that on the line morning good morning Georgie Phil 1st of all your reaction to what you've just heard and the abuse directed at this person in North Alison. Yet it's heart rendering isn't it I know that the vast majority of our communities in North Yorkshire. Do not want this kind of behavior at all across our county and rightly so and actually as a place service we make it really clear here to target a person because of their race religion disability sexual orientation or their gender is a crime and we will investigate it when it is reported to us how often does it happen how often is it reported so it's you know some way it is it is far too often and I'm more than people think actually in North Yorkshire so so hate crimes for North Ocean 2018 we had 530 now that was up from the previous year from 393 this year so far up until the 31st of August we had $430.00 so again we're looking at another 10 percent increase compared 2018 on the previous year goodness me you know I mentioned that you are the 1st black and minority ethnic person to hold the position of Detective Chief Constable and I feel I feel ridiculous so I'm posting it because actually it's just your job but on this case your experiences yourself What's it been like for you. So growing up in North Yorkshire You know I had I did have a fantastic childhood I made many many great friends but there were times because of my Chinese heritage I haven't slung ties pulled up my add names called I'm a high and songs reciting to me from children and from older people and he's thinking you know this is just not what it was a affected me as a child to the point where I did not want to acknowledge my heritage and who but he should ever fail because this did you tell your parents about them and did you go home and say this is happening Well my my my mom. Is Chinese and she brought it up as a single parent family she did the absolute best she could you know and as an as a Chinese lady growing up as well she had many many friends in the community but she also suffered some of the abuse her self it was hard really because actually And unfortunately we just thought that was the norm and now I realize it's not and should never be accepted as the norm is this something that was just restricted to your childhood because I know we thought they were the years historically it's not been brilliant in the police force in terms of racism there have been occurrences on that. They have being you know and I am also part of national police chief counsel working group in terms of I have responsibility for internal confidence and part the work I'm doing is looking at some of those abuses that take place inside places because as much as it happens is it's a it is not also tolerated in place and we will root this out and I am relentless about this what is wrong with this why is it getting worse you know you say that 413 today a 31st of all was that is an increase why is it getting so bad. So I think there's a combination of factors here George so I think you know and this is just our belief my view is that we've been working very very hard to build trust with our minority communities to make sure that all communities fail we are the police service that represents them and in order to do that we are encouraging them to come forward and report these incidents so I'm hoping that some of this is about increased reporting because I still fail this is an underreported area of crime significantly so we need to keep building that trust to make sure communities reporters so that's one area where it is reported but actually I think these incidents have been going on so whilst there is increased reporting I think all we're saying is probably what true a picture is out there finally what's your message to the person that sent this abuse allegation that this person who was abused in the Thomason what would you say to them so what I would say is the vast majority of our communities in North Yorkshire and certainly the place services the communities north all should do not tolerate this type of hate and abuse it is a crime we will investigate it and we will support the individual through this and I know the wider community will also do the same. So many thanks for coming on the show this morning felt really good. Thank you very much shorter Deputy Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police Phil Kane and he's been talking to me about this hate crime in ALL 1000 and he himself has been you know racially abused in his time so he's really behind this he knows what it's like and he really wants to do something about it you listening to Georgie at breakfast here on B.B.C. Radio he's just gone a quarter past 8. Radio York it's just gone 20 past day with finding out this morning about a group of friends who are really going to be working up a sweat this weekend for Get Running a mouth and they're all trying to row a mountain and I'm not sure whether that is easy Joni to Mr C. Because he's sitting down yeah I thought that maybe he'd go you know a lot faster rowing but I don't know if that's the case actually I have to say. And that's because the been doing anything it's just me watching all these people training this morning my. Mates this is all the idea Frankie me read and come in a couple of her friends character dumbness crossfade in New York and they want to throw. Amount of them each on Saturday Can you believe that for those of people who might not be up for rowing a marathon by themselves that got a few extra as just to people can pop on them maybe give some money as well I'm going to let you start Frank yet you're doing so so well just remind us why you wanted to do it so about 3 years ago I lost my crumbs about Simas and ever since I've kind of one super fund raising him memory and we raise money for Alzheimer's research in case for make or break me said and just the guys here I'm local James and just been so supportive and it's all escalated Is it easy to throw a marathon in them is to run amuck Martha I hate to say and I ran a marathon probably about about 3 years ago as well. And that was not fun and I promised my mom I'd never run and run the marathon which is where the idea of writing came from inside to me hope said How long is it going to take you to do it and for me I'm hoping about 4 and a half hours. Can take so some of the guys are looking at about 3 and a half hours but rely on for about 6 hours with all this Georgie is to raise money for this we should she Cayenne Emma Wilson is a member of the the gym also dementia friend champion What will you be trying to tell people on Saturday you know so they can learn more about being more dementia friendly so the dementia friends. So it's a 2 dimension friends group is a social movement has 2500000 members and the whole aim is to teach you brittle bit about dementia and to inspire people to make big changes just to make their communities the little bit more dimension friendly there are some penises but if to give you just one right now I'd say just be compassionate and treat people as individuals and so of trying to what towards given the best quality of life regardless of what they can do it sounds that patients impose Yes I catch my breath or I do I'm not you kind of because the training to. They said of your Saturday as a promise we'll say she's one of the the other people take you past what are you looking forward to the most so maybe not looking forward to I'm looking forward to this new by lawsuit challenging the 2019 to be on that's what I found for you you seem to love a bit which I do but it's just got a little bit too much I read of swim from Alcatraz this year I've room 75 miles a day 24 hours 24 were I work out and on Saturday I'll run 10 miles or 30 to 35 pounds of a box of honey no. Surprise this one final word from me from Frankie Frankie how much he's hoping to raise and all originally it was 500 pounds and what was passed this morning in sign of love it's head passed that house how Mark would be absolutely fantastic and what difference would that money make basically out Symes he said he came on the edge of some ground break me set and sent out a press and. Several of them. And they're on the edge of some groundbreaking research that if fundraising continues at this pace there should be something that can change their lives or cure Alzheimer's dementia. By turns 25 how long I'm going to be out by 2025 is the aim of me thank you very much I'm writing here as Frankie re the ladies come up with this idea rowing a man with them is going to start at 1 o'clock on Saturday by the way Georgie left and more is going to be a big day that's going to be home Rose is going to be bake sales so if you cut me off to help them you can just stuff your face if you want to here then you can go to. Tiny dot cdc forward slash De Mint Divinia smartens or you can just visit diminished Cross Fit York there is a link on their Facebook page overexuberance. That we're all out of breath a journey to many many thanks as well. So rowing would be easier than running but clearly it takes some stamina doesn't it is just going $25.00 faster. Now we've had problems on the M one. Joy David says improving. All the I mean the M one to horrible I mean this is coming towards us through South Yorkshire but completely closed has been since 2 o'clock this morning due to an orbiter and lorry that was carrying glass bottles and it sheds around about $44.00 tons of glass which requires cleaning up its clothes north of $38.00 he towards $39.00 with queues back beyond $37.00 a $1.00 and $2.00 I was on. Thankfully closer to home were much much better than that whether we rode through a little bit busier up towards the woodlands like to find some slow moving traffic through Nagpur 3 restrictions on the A 59 Hazel bank affair and that's partially got due to an accident just up from National Golf Club expect delays as a result of that one and if you travelling into and out of York it's all fairly fit just roadworks your bishop thought around scar cross road that might slow you down on the A 59 and if you heading to Scarborough it's not too bad busy on a road of towards the lights of a particular optically slow from the Queen Margaret or junction anything else we'd appreciate you call as always on the Travel line 84849 Thank you David papers next with coax from 12.
