So you know they were quite close beside me and they just kept doing this for a while it felt like quite a long time is probably any of a few sort of a minute or 2 but yeah and I could see exactly what company they worked for so when I got back I decided to post the name of the company on Twitter as well as the contact details that I found just by Googling the company and encouraged my followers to email or text them just to say that it's really unacceptable to harass runners in general or to harass women and yeah I had a really great response and Ok How did you feel then when the van was car moving alongside you in the traffic in the comments Ok. Coming How does it feel is just really intimidating and really and feels just completely unnecessary I'm just going about my day. You know they should just go about bears and not encroach on my own space to the people in the van have safety in numbers there was you running on your own and how many people yesterday were 33 men in this van say obviously part of it was probably some make each other laugh but it's not really a reason to intimidate. And they probably manage that but you were at that was all at your expense Yeah absolutely and I mean what was the sort of rough nature of the comments I mean could I could I guess that myself or. Guess the kind of thing that they decided was a good idea to shout at me Ok And how did that make you feel and I mean it happens unfortunately happens to me quite a lot if I run especially in Brighton I'm quite lucky in Louis it doesn't happen too often but if I run in Bryson It will probably happen most of the time and I just got to a point where I just get really angry about it now so why challenge it this time sounds like you've let it go before yeah so I've had to let it go before because usually it's a car it's just a plain white van it can be someone just walking down the street so there's no way really of. Picking anyone up on it where is this time these men were arrogant enough to think that I wouldn't do anything about it and you know stupid enough really to do it in their company vehicle you know I work for a company if I do something stupid and you run the risk of being caught out Ok And when you contacted the company what sort of reaction did you get and it took a little while for them to get in touch with me and fortunately. When they did you know was very apologetic and said that he kind of dealt with the employees which is fine and you know I'm willing to kind of leave it there I don't want to destroy someone's business or anything but I just wanted to make it really really. We're really caught out that this kind of behavior is just unacceptable and really just needs to stop it happens way too often. You know if you look at runners Wilde's did a recent survey and it was found that 58 percent of women under 30 have experienced this kind of thing and that's just really unfair and not on because I mean you're out there running because you like running or you want to keep fit or whatever reason you go running said one of them isn't to get unwanted attention not engine Exactly and you know I run because I train Samaritans and I should have the right to just run as I want to Ok and I would imagine that a lot of time when if if it's calls like that coming out whether it's wolf whistles or comment shouted out. Quite a lot the time it will go on challenge because actually you run the risk of escalating the situation but why shouldn't you be out a call out that kind of behavior Yeah exactly and I think quite often you know I will react fairly angrily at people shouting at me because it happens quite often and I get very frustrated with it. But but yeah I think you have a right to challenge it but I think the reason why people do it so often from a vehicle is because it's so difficult to fit to experience any kind of repercussions from from that kind of behavior and it's just so easy to to shout and drive on and you've had that rush of power of intimidating someone and the past and even timid it is has has no way of of responding so is it down to now or tackling these incidents one at a time so maybe those 3 men in the van will change their behavior as a result of you actually doing something about it and not just quietly accepting it I hope so I hope so and I think it does take a lot of in-car takes a societal shift in behavior as well to kind of switch around and there's a so much talk about sexual harassment allegations you know starting with maybe. Harvey Weinstein last year the hash tag me to movement is this something that you and your friends and the people you work with are talking more and more about do you think yeah of course I'm really glad that it's kind of been brought to the fore of the media and that people are talking about it because I think for such a long time it's just something that women sort of accepted that you know I've been running on the roads now for probably about 7 years and from the start of running this is happened and you know whilst in a way it was quite lucky that they had the company on and I was able to tweet about the company I've treated many many times before about this kind of thing happening but now I think it's really really important that people talk about it and make it very clear that we are not accepting this anymore and this kind of behavior has really has to stop now and the next generation of young women don't need to experience the kind of things that we have. What would you say to people who perhaps to do this might be listening now driving around let's just stick with driving around or I mean you know maybe work in a building site for the moment. Try and explain to them what it's like to be in your shoes on the receiving end of that kind of comment it's actually quite scary I think it's really it's takes away my enjoyment of what of doing something that I love. It's just it just looks pathetic to be honest I think as a as a woman it's just. It's the kind of thing that makes you really if I were in your shoes at that time and somebody is doing that to them how would how would they feel what would that make them feel like well I hope it may I think it would make them feel quite intimidated because that's what it's. Going out for exactly you just need to think about who you imagine that person running is someone is a good friend of yours is your why he would daughter someone you work with and how they would feel and how you would feel if they came into the office and said look this is happened to me this morning came home and said this is happening to me this morning you know how would you feel if that if that happened to someone you love and I'm really intrigued Kathy to know what sort of reaction you had to your blog post or your tweets because I think we know you'll probably get extremes on both sides coming back to you what sort of thing there were people saying actually it was really positive overrule I hardly had any negative response to it at all and I think that's mostly because I kind of surrounded myself in this really nice community actually on online and and also it's you know it's obviously lots of women who say yes this happened to me thank you for calling out but also men who say this has happened to my friends my daughter.
