And Sopranos and he's even got the ivy now and you keep walking up the hill and then you've got a few more shops and then you get to the left hand side and it's boarded up. It's been boarded up for years and years and years where the new cinema was all opposite Trinity Arts Center and then when you go up to the precinct it's practically closed down completely it is all fallen when you go into the mall it's like I don't know it's like some really awful 70 is American film in kind of dull Technicolor So what makes a great town. Well Crowborough which is 2 miles the other way they have French markets and I have this that and the other and we have Christmas trees and new little restaurants are opening up and it's really sweet. And loads of supermarkets So where what Times has a great town center I don't know let me know where you think the best prettiest town center is in Sussex or sorry and tell me why text me. A rain I know I know we're looking at the rain however today we're talking about high streets now if it is raining where do you take cover in your high street have you got coffee shops have you got little tiny restaurants have you got little bars little sound wage bars and if it's sunny have you got somewhere that you can sit out and talk to each other and watch the world go by what makes a good town center Now if you go into where my daughter lives she lives in Hackney she lives in Ridley Road Nama she's always lived around Hackney you walk down the road this independent shop says shops are selling plants so shops are just selling coffee little grocery shop shops are selling brushes and pots and pans and all sorts of stuff and it feels alive yes I'm arguing for independent straws do you have a high street that has independent stores now when when I was growing up saying Israel is just started but I remember queuing up at my mom at the cheese counter the women had that little white neck so on and they used to cut the cheese with the bits of wire and you chatted you stood and it was lovely wooden couples behind them and there was a greengrocer's across the road and I can remember a winter time the rain on the pavement used to reflect the oranges of the Tangerines with satsumas when they came in. And we had shops that you could have a dance studio I can remember and there were shops that you would sit down and you date that moved into shops that sold Beigels or bagels which was fantastic that you lots of those of close now but I'm really intrigued to know what you think makes a really good high street is it for its social activity is it because things are convenient is it because they put on fantastic little festivals where you can buy garlic straight from from hanging garlic bulbs what makes a high street a good high street call me on this telephone number 080-587-1004 extension 6 or text me right on top of 3 Start your message with the word radio. Now let's hear from some towns and to see what they're doing to drive businesses Claire Bailey is a retail expert and founder of future high street summit Good morning morning how are you Oh very well thank you I'm not going out my local I think that that's exactly why I'm asking where are you located Oh I actually live in a small market. Heavily populated by very. Independent. Why is it a good high street because it sounds that I mean you're going to go out and have a coffee and whatever the rain what makes it such a good high street. Well I think can something is good like knowing the name web freaks that just like anything it's a creaking a high street in a mall sort of micro business thinking looking at it like he was a typical live and enjoy time in this area that was. Saturated and then actually having Town Center Management who proactively go out makes a big success of the service providers who can satisfy the needs of the local community now you founded future high street summit what was the turning point for you why did you form it. To believe the depth of the hype that's as I say they look about the transformation. You like to change but they proposition and also found that the high street had and it was the same old same old everywhere you went there was some shining with like out there across the U.K. Who were actually showcased then House to really bring people back to the child and change with the activities whether it be family focused on whatever but they were doing very well and they were bucking the trend and to me it was about those types of things that are exactly what was available outside and there are some great places tell me tell me 3 of them. Well let's look at the names then Bryce and 1st stop for the sex the night shift people go that. Amazing day out with. Both can enjoy. And they could actually give diners an amazing that's what they think then you look at places like the Cathedral Quarter they understood what the needs and wants of the area was and they work hard to bring in retailers that wouldn't typically get exits because they're like. That because the business improvement district phoned them up and said we thought of a you know we think the profile of our local community product they saw a lot and they got some amazing tree and I suppose another that's they if you could . Think of any place you know in love as a tourist destination Lincoln one of my nearest town convict this improvement group working all that with their shop and create activities and markets and fun things the family is a drive the boat both a local community and also stories and it's just about thinking vibrant and reminding people of what's on that also that we are brilliant that's kind of I may come back to you can ask don't disappear just yet because I'm moving now to council to PETA but just cabinet member for Horsham town center Good morning South ready. You're not so good for you just gave me maybe thought. Oh of course you are listen every one of us is deeply important young man but now how much is the high street in the grip of high rates which is why so many of the shops are closing. I think. I think the problem in the recent. Fall is trying to write. And some of the big stores of it he found their rates have dropped. Some of the smaller stores of sound the rates of increase but there's a good reason for this because what they do has changed little shops that have very few customers going through or changed into vibrant so coffee shops we've got so many shops here that but rate is in the ports and we are looking at it overall councils ready and. It's me sorry go on well I was going to say you don't want to penalize people for their success do you don't know that it's a question of trying to get the right balance. And but everything like that rates and rents need to be sought. But. My. Horse is really doing quite well actually we've got very few tea shops we've got a good mix of shops and I suppose the biggest thing 3 besides the independent shops which go down to Main the high street right alongside We've also got ready a rather nice smell as well which we've got some of the bigger trucks and it's so. Important as a councillor PITA is it for you to see independent shops coming in and now if we if we're looking at a possible brick sit without a deal and if we're looking a possible possible recession which is what they're talking about many people don't have excess cash they don't have you know money going into the pot people are not spending so much and they're saving because things have become so expensive. I think. I'm just losing the thread slightly of what you're close to and what I'm saying how important a little independent shops and how they stay open they are particularly in the airport and we're running various schemes 30. In fact have one this week to look at how we can help shops always see councils like all over the world or herds the for the things like that we don't have a lot of money so you can't pump anything in but shops are important we've had an explosion in the Horsham of coffee shops restaurants and things like that we've got more on the high street that used to be dead now it's literally full of restaurants which are full which is very good it's encouraging but independent shops are important we've gotten a vantage we have quite a mix of them I mean it was and some years ago they did a survey which said that the more coffee shops in the more restaurants you have the more affluent your society is quashing and particularly affluent Yeah I'm not boasting but we're in the southeast the engine as it's called well the pompously. Quite a lot of our people of our residents work in London. And quite a lot of people we've been finding who've lived in London are now selling their houses in London because they can get so much money for them and coming down to a quarter of we've got quite a big building. Thing going on the a large number of new houses being built and people like who should one of the main advantage to the haven't said yet is parking and that's one of the things you won't go to a town if you have to drive around Brighton I heard talked about but it's very difficult now to park in Brighton but in Washington we've got about 15 plus. Speck across the we've got a new part in the center of things so if you can guarantee a province but if you go back. Again our Says you counsel Peter Burgess if you don't mind holding the line in case I come back to you because I have to leave 930 when you know well no you victories to go thank you so much for talking with us. Thanks thanks a lot Peter Amanda masters you are from experience Guilford I am indeed a good morning good morning how lovely So how do we actually experience Guilford is it a good town center Well I'm extremely biased it is the perfect time center of Islay I'd like to echo what class that just now about town center is having to know the needs of the people to go there or potentially go and it's offering something for everybody all ages and all making it is accessible he possibly can. So he said just I was talking about independence we have over a $125.00 in the town center line and the thing about independence is that they offer variety choice point of difference and locals are extremely proud of fiercely loyal to them because they love the let's face it is independent businesses are generally people who live in the area so they care really really care about the town. But then also to people inward so people here a visiting the town center the found something different that they won't find everywhere else so if I was to come to Guilford Where would you send me for coffee where would you send me for lunch where would you send me to have a facial and where would you send me to park my car OK I'll stay out there with the last one 1st if I'm a party. Thing is easier with technology now so there is an app for Guilford the official Guilford app which is free to download and that will find your parking space so before you come into the town you know where the vacant spaces are you don't have to drive around and around and around for ages to found one you can find out why so technology's been our friend in that respect in terms of what has Kofi or so to say we've got over Space Day restaurants and cafes in the town center so you know you can choose a cuisine 151620 different cuisines from across the globe to pay really and if you're coming in for spa treatment Well we've got about 20 different places you can go and relax and be pampered and we ALL THOSE a bit about don't we really yes we jointly will do a man of the modern Rejali will do house house kill for the ever taken a hit I mean what did Tom Ridge Rose I think the moment is so sad to top that so many shops so shop and we've been promised this on the other we haven't got it did that ever happen to Guilford or has it just been a steady increase Guilford is not unlike other towns and cities across the U.K. Everybody's experiencing something because of the retail landscape as it is at the moment however Guilford has a lower vacant unit right the national and regional average were about 7 percent which is brilliant but it's a place making is the important thing but it's a strange phrase that place my concern pause and I think Clay would probably agree with that it's about the event she put on is about the markets that you have it's about things like skill for Shakespeare Company for Fringe Festival and yeah yeah yeah I think something different style is you know if you're to take a 100 should be something for you every time you go to Guildford. You are brilliant Tom Bassett There are mounds of thank you for thank you so much let me return to. You you've had to work out for the PETA badge is said and you've heard what Amanda said having very unique places but But what a man is just said is event so how important is an event to the High Street critically if something is fine for Paul and brings people back because they think well this looks interesting we'll go and have a poke around and when they did they discover all rediscover what's on their doorstep they when I was going to an event. Or place my cousin said she is the price like making is an actual profession and I didn't invent all those kind of people a comfort to learn how to put on town center events how important they are and you see hounds up and down the U.K. Doing things like trails where they've got the statues they ship left and tango in it oh yeah yeah yeah yeah I know and I mean yeah you can kids can go and find them they got them out but they take them around the town makes it fun and interesting and then they tell them all the charity these things like the. Thing apart from going tomorrow so you might think well I'm going to go take for example killed today because my kids will like to do whatever trail they've got in place they might win a prize So how does it have to learn about the history and well you know that you accidentally happen across the businesses that I've always been that somehow you might have forgotten oh my it never even notices and it's just about regular repeated exposure to the businesses in the town and brings the place to life now what about places I mean you have a council of Peter Burgess talking about new houses and the influx of blow ins from London there's money but what about areas that don't have money that have boarded up I streets where there's not a lot of money just around where s
